Getting Torah to the Heart
542 views
What if a Torah shiur felt like a concert? Niggun Chabura was built around an ancient idea: sometimes the shortest path to the soul is through a song. Musicians take the stage. Torah, stories and ideas are woven through the music. And suddenly concepts that can be difficult to reach through a sefer or traditional shiur are being experienced in an entirely different way. Because Torah isn't only meant to be understood. It's meant to enter the heart. It's another example of something you see again and again in the Five Towns and Far Rockaway. Take something timeless. Find a new way to share it. And help another Yid connect. See the Good: Five Towns & Far Rockaway

I can almost guarantee that you've never
learned Torah like this. Tell me about
the Nigun Chabura.
>> Nigun Chabura is a combination of some
of the best stuff we have in
Yiddishkeit. It's Torah, it's music,
it's connection, and it's a way of
trying to express Torah in a very sweet
way. Everybody wants to learn, but not
everybody likes the way that it's being
taught. Everybody loves music. So, we
decided, let's put it together. There's
so many amazing Jewish musicians who
arrange such beautiful lyrics, who sing
such beautiful songs. Didn't we once
have you?
>> We did. I was there.
>> And we did a Chabura. We did a Chabura
breaking apart your song. You told us
the story of your grandfather.
>> Yes.
>> The light of Hanukkah. It's an amazing
story.
>> When someone walks into the Nigun
Chabura, what are they going to see?
What are they going to experience for a
beginner? What happens?
>> We have the events. We're sitting.
There's usually a stage with whichever
musicians are there. Everybody has their
instruments, but then there's a whole
crowd of people listening, and it's you
walk into this interesting mix of
concert,
but sheer It's not really No one's
really sure, which that wonder keeps
them, you know, guessing and wanting
more. The way it works is that I try to
take some of their songs and the lyrics,
and I try to make a story or make a
theme out of the divrei Torah that
connect interweaving with their songs.
Then they'll play that song to really
deepen the idea that I'm saying. And
then we go throughout the whole night.
>> For those watching, you are on Instagram
right now, or you're on your WhatsApp,
and opening a safer is a really hard
thing to do. Or going to a shiur, it's
just like listening to someone speak is
a hard thing to do. But this idea of
bringing a Torah into your heart through
music has been with us for thousands of
years. Honestly, I don't think I've seen
this anywhere else where there's
literally a Torah class, but it's done
through music. Um so, yeah, I don't
know. Maybe you could speak on like the
why why music is so powerful.
>> Music goes right to the heart. If you
know what's right, but your heart wants
something else, unfortunately, most
often we're going to go with the heart
and go to the other thing, because the
heart's more powerful than the mind. And
music goes right to the heart. So, if we
can get our Torah in our life and our
neshama us the heart of the matter. I
want that you're going to do it. So,
trying to get to the heart is always the
heart of the matter.
