[Music] the prophet samuel's tomb because it's such a beautiful note such a beautiful view and such a pleasant place to spend a few i don't know a few precious moments to fulham to dabbing off the mikveh after she gave birth to shmuel and how hard did she pray [Music] she prayed and of course her her tsar the such star she had of not having a child and she dedicated this child to hashem samuel so the book of samuel begins with a barren woman longing for a child a woman who became one of history's greatest models of prayer all of our prayer right is we've learned so many laws so many of the the concepts of deep prayer meditation from hannah right that her lips moved her lips moved but ellie couldn't even hear he thought she was drunk she was she was in such deep meditation in response to hannah's entry from the heart god made her the mother of samuel the greatest of all the judges and the prophet who was at the stature of moses and our own became the nation's leader during one of its most dismal periods to date and he raised it back to its earlier eminence from his home in ramah he traveled the length and breadth of the land teaching educating and inspiring during his tenure the people insisted they needed a king and samuel inaugurated the era of jewish monarchy anointing both saul and david although saul towered head and shoulders above his peers he failed as a leader his tragedy cost him the throne and he was succeeded by king david by david it became the epitome of royal greatness most of this book see the book of samuel who's buried here is it samuel 1 or samuel 2 that's the famous question well there was only one samuel it was divided into two books but there's only one samuel don't be miss don't be misled there was only one samuel and most of this book is the story of david unselfish leader great warrior loyal friend compassionate in victory humble in defeat and model of repentance oh we're going to talk about that shortly in the next paragraph only by studying his life in the light of the talmudic and rabbinic commentaries can one begin to imagine his stature wow dove in a melon psalms wow even the superficial reading the episode of batsheva shows david's humility and powerful conscience when the period when the prophet nathan criticized him harshly david did not defend himself even though as the talmud explains he was technically in the right his remorse was so great that it became the textbook for repentance read psalms 15. david consul consulated the 12 often competing tribes into a single nation right what a politician what a monarch right you know why we're jews you know why we're called jews because we all hopefully every one of us recognize the monarchy of yehuda through david right we are it doesn't matter what tribe we're from cohen levy right even if you're from tribal lady from asher naftali it doesn't matter whether you're from any one of the 12 tribes we recognize and we'll look longing for the mashiach who comes from the seed of yishai of david he consolidated the 12 often competing tribes into a single nation he defeated external enemies and left his etc successor with united secure prosperous kingdom to the rest of us in all generations he bequeathed legacies of pure faith the seeds of the messiah and the book of psalms the book of samuel marks the historic transition in jewish history in more ways than one because the change from judges to kings also led to a change in the role of the prophets since the judges had been chosen by god because of their righteousness there was no danger that they would defy him or falsify his message the monarchy however was hereditary and as seen in the sad history of the book of kings and chronicles many of the kings sinned grievously and ultimately brought the nations nation down the kings could not be the moral leaders of the nation as the judges had been that role had to be assumed by prophets plus after the book of samuel we find the prophets assuming a new kind of authority and prominence as the succeeding books will show and that i invite you will be i don't know when we'll do a series on the book of samuel resurrection we should see through the pictures that i showed you today the destruction of jerusalem this is on the outskirts of jerusalem but one day soon not only will yerushalayim be built but the temple right the meshiach will help us build the temple he'll gather in the exiles he'll help everyone go according to the straight path of torah and israel hashem the whole world will be filled with the knowledge of god and everyone will
