There was once a man who was a great miser, a kam tzan. Not only he didn't give a penny to anyone, he made sure that all of his sons were educated in his ways and they also did not give a penny. One day, the man was elderly and he was dying. He was on his deathbed upstairs in his home. All of a sudden, he got a little bit hungry. So, he asked his sons, "Please, could you make something for me? Make an egg for me." And they began to cook an egg. The window was open. There was a man who was poor. He was famished. He hadn't eaten in days. And when he smelled that aroma, he went and he knocked on the door. The sons opened it and he said, "Could I have whatever's cooking? I'm starving. I feel like my life is ebbing away. I may die." The sons were very smart. They knew that their father would never give a penny away and they said, "No." And he started crying and begging them, "Please, you don't know. I haven't eaten for so long." All of a sudden, the father upstairs heard and said, "What's going on?" And the sons told him what had happened. The father said, uncharacteristically, "Give him the egg." They gave to him the egg. And after that, the father died. When he went up to the heavenly court and they saw a whole life went by without anything good, they were about to say that he will never get to heaven. Unfortunately, he's going down. All of a sudden, a malach appeared, an angel. The angel said, "Wait, wait. I have something to say to the court. I am the angel that was created from that egg. I am here to testify that this man, with his singular act of charity, saved a life. Whoever can save one life, it's like they saved the entire world. And so, the man gained entry to heaven." Later that week, he appeared to his sons and he said to them, "You see what can happen from one charitable act. Can you imagine what a lifetime of chesed and staka, of charity and benevolence, will do for everyone?"
