hello and welcome to starkey's webinar uh we're here in the starkey offices with uh i'm rabbi sv goldberg and we have today a guest rabbi david hebber how are you rabbi heber to you and all your viewers okay uh we are both in the offices but uh coveted uh guidelines still in effect so we are in separate separate rooms um let us make it big we have on your on the right side of your screen you should see a chat uh button and we love to chat with you if you have questions for abihabber uh comments uh let's just start making sure that you can hear us if just a few people could to chat with us to make sure that we are being heard we would appreciate that okay okay keith says he can hear us and uh yehuda okay great okay as long as alba is in spain so if we can hear if we can hear us in spain they can hear us or wherever um today's topic is the intriguing world of jewish time which is a safer uh that a book that was written uh by rabbi hebert just recently published israel bookshop publications uh and uh but this has been something that arabic hebrew has been involved with i don't know how long um for a couple of decades i guess um and uh long time no what that's that a long time a long time uh i i guess in my my in the way i understand it it's it's it's like a torah hobby uh a halacha hobby something that's interesting and it relates to to allah's and and um and and how it intersects with time issues and it's a really fascinating topic so we're going to go through some of that um and just uh as i'm an unabashed plug for rabbi hebert's uh book you can get it on israel bookshop publications or at your local uh bookshop and uh i think you'll find it uh enjoyable for both men and and and women um so rabbi hebert let's start how how did you get involved with this topic i think it's unusual in the it's really unusual even in the torah world there's not that many uh tamil uh like yourself who are interested in this particular niche so how did this how did it start so i really when i was a young boy somehow i always enjoyed numbers and uh calculations uh even as a you know kindergarten uh always fascinated me my father was shaolin was a khazen in uh schul in saint louis pharisee straw where robert hartman always almost and um eventually he was in it was in hashtag where rabbi was the rav and i grew up in the shul and my father always made it a point of discussing the comings and goings in the shul and what i mean of that is what we're learning is there a special thing going on with the different trump uh shellis um today which obviously um all the different answers he made of interest every little thing not only the big you know today's the roshana but even even little things became big things i know in your book you you quote uh your father that he would wake you up and say today this is charles exactly right right right right that was exciting it was exciting and then i had my father as a rebbe in sixth grade um he was a if i was writing for many years and taught kamala maskhilam for many years he taught the the fourth paragraph brachas which is an immediate discussion right at the beginning of the peric about seismond fila and then plaga minha so it came to life really as a as a young boy that's the first gemara first kamara that you do in class um and and i like numbers to start with so it became you know fascinating at that young age you know there was a limited ability to learn that were they were available i remember saying in english the book of our heritage had had various discussions of that then when i went to shiva to tell chicago so there we learned how to learn and then all of a sudden i had access you know once we learned how to learn uh suggests and then and you had access to various uh you know ramakrish at the beginning of the missionaries all of a sudden open up worlds to see what's the calendar how does it work what are the mechanics um you know what happens coupled with my all-time favorite book 150-year calendar which you know i studied and read and which years like this and i wanted to pour them on friday next and i remember as a kid looking and seeing 1981 every parsha is going to be separate which is extremely rare there's no double practice that we're in 1981. wow and the next time it happened at 2052 on footstarts 2052 it happened in 2005 and eight which was rare back to back but like that three years apart but then it won't happen again after 2008 until 2052 it could start so like i just found it of interest and then then later you learned how why why that's true in other words why that's the case what needs to fall into place and what the mechanics behind the scene so that's where my interest came and um then i wanted to share it you know with certain interests that you have you want to share it with other people so then at a young age i learned that there's some people who are extremely interested and can't get enough of it and there's other people who don't really have an interest they don't like math they don't like numbers so you kind of have to learn how when to speak up and when to you know just say yeah you know i know i know that one of your fans is malcolm siegel from the nelham siegel show and uh you know you kept up with him for many years and you were on the show this morning was did you talk about those time issues yes i usually go on um at the beginning of the year and initially we spoke about some of the events of this coming year you know of interest in the calendar and then we all spoke about the we all spoke about the book but uh at the calendar that's uh he's very fascinated with it all the years and it's it's always nice to be on the show right um i i can't help it robert however just because this is not a set uh sheer but just to notice that this uh little um what i'm pointing to i think you can see on the screen on the back of your bulletin board uh you told me it's a boarding pass to alaska right alaska is a lot of money in the shoes but yes i was able to go to alaska about about two years ago to do an inspection of starcate facility and um alaska's a very lumbish estate because and and i had the opportunity in the star k and i'm greatly appreciative to starkey gave me opportunity to write um on both topics that relate to alaska one on the the northern regions above the arctic circle how do you davin if the sun doesn't settle when the shabbos start and that's actually in the book the conscious current article and we we i believe discussed it even on your program um is is is in the northern part of alaska i went to the southern part but just you're putting your feet down in alaska knowing this alumnus and the other the western part of the state has the issue of the international date dateline i mean that's to me that's really fascinating most people when they think of alaska they probably think of going on a cruise or you know seeing the animals and what excites you is the uh you know what time should i dive in absolutely absolutely what's very interesting i i didn't realize it said at the time when i went there to do my inspection so a few weeks later i realized that you see this the western part of state has the issue with the dateline especially lucian islands according to some opinions it's really a day ahead of us and not a day behind but alaska itself at least the eastern part is certainly on the eastern side of the date line but rubyness stiff was a was a was a rub on the lower east side and in his safer he addresses there's an opinion that is not so accepted and that's you go by what the local you know whether the locals determine to shop is that that's not but it is an opinion it's an opinion again it's not it's not the the regular accepted opinion compared with the opinions of the lines that we we draw but this is he discusses if that's the then what do you do with alaska where they change days because alaska used to be part of russia right and what's interesting was i was in the town of sitka where i did the inspection sitco used to be this was the state capital of alaska in the 1800s now it was only a province it wasn't a territory it wasn't a state until until um i believe 1959 um where it became a state but in 18 i believe after the sewer you know purchased it for what was it the two cents uh square mile so it became in 1869 it became part of america and what they had was in sitka which was the capital they had a ceremony and i was actually on the on the on the hill after my inspection a little bit time before the airport there's not much to see there but i went to see this mockum which was where they lowered the russian flag and raised the american flag on a friday calamari 1869. okay that's when that's when that happened so stiff and the safer says so what do you do now they changed days you know they they went from russian day to american days they basically repeated a friday so when a shop if even if you hold like you go by the people that live there but all of us sudden people live there switching days like that i mean if if you would have been living then or if correct if you would be there technically right even already it's been already so long but if you were there all of a sudden did you now repeat it was i believe it was a it was right around the weekend so now they repeated a day so did you have an eight-day week like how can you say that all of a sudden shop a day later so he speaks about this and it's safer what was fancy that i found out was the day i was there and i was thinking about this on the trip you know this whole indian it was very like you know this is where the the shiloh came up technically rip schneids was in the you know 100 years later but this is what he was talking about i was there the day of his yard site oh wow amazing right i was there the davis yard site was when i was there you know thinking you didn't plan that in advance no i didn't know it was the airtight till later i saw a year later that hey one second right wow well that's the the that's interesting um so how should we start robert hebert um since we are a cautious agency i think we have to uh give give some uh you know time to that tell us where cashers and time you know could intersect or where there's shiloh's uh across the world let's let's let's get into that a little bit so we would start with of course well the of course the matzo bakery has time right in other words you gotta you have you have the clock that's ticking um on uh 15 minutes 18 minutes 18 minutes so that that's certainly and that's really you should know the time of 18 minutes it's 18 minutes 18 minutes all across the world and that depends yeah so well what it is is it's it's really macholicus if it's 18 minutes we call it 18-minute matzos but believe it or not the 18-minute matzah is directly related to the 72 minutes of our better time they're one of the same because because the the 80-minute matzah is based on the gemara that says it's mill and it was if you let dough sit for the time it takes to walk a mill a mill is approximately two-thirds of a mile approximately and and so does the macholic is how long that takes 18 22 and a half or 24. and and for for comets we say 18 because we want to take the lower number which comes out actually humra you got to you know you got to make sure to work the matzo over or clean up whatever type of monsters you're making uh within that 18-minute span the rabbit who tom's opinion of 72 minutes is based on the gemara that says that the end of banishments or the beginning of the the vada lila is the time it takes to walk four mil after sunset so if you go with the 18 minute number that's 18 times 4 is 72 minutes so must say shabbos being 72 minutes is four times the amount of time that you have to make sure the work the mats is so that's one place where certainly the the the manum relates very importantly on the calendar sense of course this year we had some issues uh with factories or had companies i'm sure you did you know we do ask on various companies if we have a complicated facility um where we have the kasha for example or you have ingredients that that need extra review prior to the run so again simple plants we we visit on a periodic basis complicated plants we have what's called venus company says we're going to run on this and this day is there he signs the labels and so on the issue was okay how do we do this given the yant of schedule this year which was one of the hardest of the yeom where you had tuesday wednesday then the next week was thursday and then tuesday wednesday tuesday wednesday so it's right smack in the middle of the week air vianta is not easy because you got to you know you got to be home in time for yanta so you can only have a early morning run and so on so knowing this is a cylinder this is where we get uh we we have an advantage for working for a froome organization that uh the boss doesn't expect us to work on yantez but absolutely everybody else who works for you know i'll see you next month you know although pesach we do plenty of work even on young people coming over and saying well what store can i go to tonight you know etc etc it's nice to to even circus was busy uh you know people are eating can i know and there's plenty of conscious issues that that certainly come up so that's another aspect of um of where kash is the other of conscious the other of course relates to not all of the conscious but relates really well let me ask you when is the next time we're gonna have so many young things like this in the middle of the week okay so the next time rosh hashanah is on tuesday wednesday will be in four years in 2025 um the time after that is going to be in um 20 years later in 2045. i'm asking you these questions to see if i can stump you robert no that's not the issue but your listeners you know this goes in archives if you're watching this in 2044 right you know the next year 2045 is going to have this of course next thing you know it's on monday it's also complicated next year the only thing is sunday so it's a little bit uh pesach um this year also it's good it was it was sunday monday and then and then sunday so pesach was on weekends um but she was next to you get sunday mondays it's a little bit come here is a little bit better you know um this coming year would be a little bit better but let me ask you about behavior this that you're saying in four years and 10 years and 20 years and 50 years i mean that depends i mean if mashiach comes then we will have uh we'll we will you know make the new moon according to what that's correct that's correct it's not what's in your calendar i've learned this in my book in hakatoma in the in the beginning in the forward section i wrote as follows if you allow me to read it maybe exactly the form in the midstness with much enthusiasm in their proper times and may we merit to see the idea once again determine that was my discussion in the in the preface from mcgillis esther and leap years and in parenthesis i wrote at which point in time many answers in the safer will be different so i recognize when mashiach comes right with the establishment of the sanhedrin and the common sense says i realize this book will be um will be on the sale table as a relic of the what used to be once mashiach comes that's fine we'll take it okay i just want to uh pause for a second and uh and just say that we are on with rabbit david hebber i'm sv goldberg and um and this webinar is held usually once a month pre-covered it used to be the last wednesday of the month but kovit made everything uh change and we now have it when uh when before you get the email if you signed up and you gave us your email you will get reminders about the the webinars and the the archives if you miss it you have to leave in the middle uh you you can find these webinars on our on our vimeo channel starcase certification on vimeo or on our website stardashkay.org slash videos and we have quite a few videos with rabbi hubbard in the past about travel about uh pesach about all sorts of of issues um let me mention you can also find rabbi hubbard's uh articles and our cautious currents that itself is enough to write another book rabbi however you could put it together for another safer uh and um so we all we all have the opportunity to write our little old minis forum from all the articles everyone you know the one in the office have that great opportunity to yeah it's great their own little books it's for big books it's good for the it's good for the community we help the consumers but we also enjoy it right we enjoy writing and clarifying these uh these issues um okay so that was one that's an interesting any anything else that uh that one more thing in the morning let me let me just take some of these questions here rabbi hubbard um [Music] um mrs hoxted uh i think but i think she's in israel she asked before is your book available in israel yes so so the publishing is um is a bookshop publishing does send it to israel but the first store that got it they told me was shankies in new shallam is it bookstore shankies yeah that's a famous story yeah right they ca they they get it early they get it like right away but other stores may have it i know they for sure have it uh-huh okay um is there a formula to figure out when a peso falls out if we know when sukkas falls out yes yes okay well the question is which direction it was if you're working backwards if you know when sukkah says when was pesach so that that would have been two days a week earlier i don't think that's their question but at least i'll clarify this point in other words sukis this year began on tuesday so you know that the previous pesach was two days of the week earlier namely sunday okay but i think the question being asked if you know when circus is this year right when is pesach next year the answer to that question is very very much depends um it will depend on two factors factor number one is is it a leap year or not and factor number two is how many days are there a heisman and kiss life okay let's take a let's take the shortest possible year a year where hezman and kisly are both 29 days and it's not a leap year so then pesach will fall out one day of the week later so so if hashanah if suki is a restaurant on a monday of course circus will show the same data we start the same day a week then peso will be on a tuesday okay if if there's 29 30 it's a cathedral then which can't happen on a monday but if it's excited pesach is two days later and if it's a chalet because the kid slave that it's three days later okay so if it's a leap year you add two so in a leap year it's going to be three four or five so this year rosh hashanah was a tuesday it's a leap year so that gives you two extra days in a week because other extraordinary has 30 days that's four weeks plus two and the cassidron gives you two extra days so pesach will be four days of the week later than rashad let's see if it works restaurant this year is a tuesday wednesday thursday friday in chambers so it's four days of the week later this year because it was so there is a way to figure it out the other way just kind of know the mechanics the other way is to look it up in the calendar i guess yeah i have a chart in the book i speak about i have all possible years which will show you the correlation between rosh hashanah and pesach based on so charmaine is asking that arose rodish is in fact the astronomical new moon so why should this change after mashiach in other words isn't what we have in our printed calendars isn't that based on when the moon comes out why would that change okay that's a good question the answer is like this the reason why today is reshaded is because the mylar of tishrei that's the new moon of last month was when it fell out in other words what's very interesting about the calendar is that the only myla the only new moon that really counts is the myelin of tishrei when you know the myelin of tissue you know what rosh hashanah is and then the rest of the months fall into place what you do with the way they calculate the years you calculate rosh hashanah this year rosh hashanah of next year and then you decide how many days there are slaves and that's your year it falls into place so you could have a rosh that's not so really aligned with the mud light i'll give you an extreme example here and i talk about this in the book you could you have something you don't have to say tishrei the milan and tishrei will never be after 12 noon of rosh hashanah at or after 12 noon in fact it's one of the rules of the calendar if the mighty light of tishrei falls out at noon or later roshan is postponed to the next day and if the next day is the day it can't fall out on loud to rush sunday wednesday or friday and then it's possible another day so if the mother for example fell out at noon on thursday russia's shot and will fall out on on on on what i say thursday noon on thursday roshan will be on shabbos okay but if he'll never have to afternoon why not because you can't see the new moon fast enough right if the moonlight occurs in fact we're starting those learning um um we'll be holding in these surges very soon rama goldberg says uh two daffy shore right and and la maisa but every other month so you need to see the new moon to declare that there is so they where they created they did it where they created the calendar they did it based on the time of the new moon fine now the month of shavat this happened in in 190 um 1902 i believe richard had a phenomenon that's extremely rare and and that is that that the mullet of shot occurred at like 4 4 35 o'clock in the afternoon on rosh haidish now if meshiach would be here that's because that's the way the ear fell out the my light of tishrei was then the mother to show is that shavat fell out on the day the money the milo was late in the day on on um on rich kaidish and in fact in 1247 or 1248 it fell out after shkia even it was ready tomorrow technically but that's the calendar if meshiach would be here we'd be shapiro which means we would sanctify a new moon based on sight there's no way they would see the new moon that day you can't see the new moon right away you need that gap time the answer is that i think the could i could i just uh is is the answer that it can change a day or two from what we have that's correct in the calendar that's correct it might be a day or two off which is a huge difference obviously correct but ghazal tried to mirror the sanhedrin what would have been if there would have been a sanhedrin when would they have made rich but again it's based on hejman and whenever you're based on calculations it's not going to be precise it's going to be as best as possible mimicking the sanhedrin you can't you can't bat a thousand in in in what does that engine really have done that really depends on what they saw in the conditions right so it'll be a little bit it'll be pretty much the same but a little bit off and that's correct that's correct that's the difference between rosh hashanah being on javascript sunday that's a big difference that's correct well let me take you in a different direction rabbi hebber um you know okay so you know we have your book and some people hopefully people will get it is there something like in behind the scenes that uh didn't make it into the book was uh you wanted to put in the book or the publisher said no way or something that you could share with our listeners that is or something that happened after the book was written any letters you got about the book something that they they wouldn't get they won't they want to see by buying the book that's why they came to this to the webinar right so i wrote i mentioned my father was solemn um but also i i mentioned in in the book um you know people who helped me uh in this um in this endeavor um you know i have there i have a cover of people who who assist me um there's a yid in washington heights his name is cindy strauss and and you know he's but he's a has amazing ideas in uh embroiders he can tell you any minig any yakisha mimic um that's there so he he was reading my column most of this was based on my column in the ted uh which is called calendar calculations and and he used to call me with comments or email me and call me with comments and and either things that were you know errors or things not clear the obama just told the champion i said you know what can you do me a favor instead of you see a lot of times you write things and you don't either you forgot about a case some of the questions are when's the only case you know you you can't always think through everything every case so i miss cases or i got mixed up or i see he would comment or or this could have been why don't you add this case and so on so he would call me comment a number of years ago so i asked him i said you know what this old saying if you can't beat him join them i said would you read my column in advance of the publication and he graciously offered um to do that and um uh and he reads it and he makes phenomenal comments i'll tell you a funny story with him just before you real quick is that right i just want to mention that your publication is in the attain every week right correct right that's really what this book is made up of questions based on that and it's also based on a little conscious currency you know the two articles on the dateline and the northern regions based on cash course the others based on on the calculations but funny is someone came over to him to sydney strauss in washington nights and says you know this is column in your ted this guy robert baltimore writes you would really be interested in this stuff because he says i checked this thing over but of course i know all about it i'd actually mention i have a grammatical errors i very closely did dr yasi sheller who really uh checked in the early days and this is mrs elaine lippo who who just moved to baltimore from san diego we were neighbors in san diego she was english principal in a local day school and obviously knows a lot of english and i send their article every week and they check it over and uh you know ms lippo was writing you know when you're coming out with a book you know like put this into a book so you you need that that physic and uh eventually you you you know you do it so those are some of the little bit behind the scenes of of vladimir beam also that had an impact on me when i mentioned the book as well um so i i want to say something that i mentioned to you i'm i'm no expert in this topic but you have one of the questions you have there is how do you have nine different uh shimon estres uh marev in a row right and and you give an example of how you have nine so i came over to you that this yontev i found 12. and and you explained to me that it doesn't qualify for your for your for your assistance so you want to maybe go through that i'll explain that that's one of the things when you write a book at least you get to decide what what there's no what qualifies it's like yeah this is a good question this it's like other people tell me that's not an interesting question you know everybody has their own opinion on what's what's of interest but anyway so you have this year there were 12 what was 12 in a row different answers is that the next night was different than the previous night so so you had for example um um if you had let's say uh matsuyam kippur um was a i'm not sure where it started i didn't even i started i think the second night of johnson yeah second night of yanta right i think second night yontif was um a tuesday night and then wednesday night was with you know how much money and then thursday night was a regular call of mine that's right and then friday night with shabbos um you know um second night how is that different it's only different from the night before that's what you were telling me oh that is correct right exactly right so that was the same as how much that was different than the previous night and then you had um you know each night was different than the previous night you ended up with 12 nights the question i have in the book is nine different from an s-rays that are different from each other unique a subset of unique schwinn s-rays that um that you don't have and that's very rare and happens since 1956 when that last happened um you know so that's i found that you know fascinating okay so we'll let them let them look at that that answer in the book but it's just interesting to me that that that otherwise you were looking for nine different myers that are different from each other and i came up with 12 dif that were different from one night to the other but that that you know when someone told me about that question someone mentioned that question i said oh no like was i wrong in the book like i made a big deal out of nine and now sometimes you're 12 and then i hop this this uh that's different mrs hofstede wants to know if there's a way you can get the column without getting any attained or without waiting for the next book to come out and then that's a good question i'm i i don't i would i thought about you know disseminating it and so i just never had the wherewithal doesn't it doesn't have a website by now they do but i don't know if they post a comment they have posted once in a while i think but generally if i ask them like there's a special article it's a while i write about something but in general they don't they don't post it okay there's one thing i would like to share i think uh this is this would be interesting for women especially uh the answer is in the book but maybe you can give the answer here give him a tissue uh why is it impossible for a girl to become bassmitzva on purim cotton meaning like this year in other aleph there won't be any bass misses uh on on on purim cotton then why not right so this is fascinating issue in fact the principal of a of a girl school called me and said he's gonna send this question out it's fascinating i'll start with bar mitzvah as we know a bar someone who's born in a regular order has his bar mitzvah in other shiny in a leap year right so for example if you're born in a regular year and 13 years later is a leap year for example this year so we'll have 20 2022 13 years ago was 2009. so boys who were born in 2009 was a regular year not a leap year they were they were born let's say purim right so now now 2022 tough shouldn't pay bays when's the bar mitzvah it's like we passing the bar mitzvah is in the second order so bar mitsuboy who was born in regular 2009 his bar mitzvah is going to be its other base you could have a bar mitzvah in other research so the only way this year other re-shine will not have our mitzvah boys so it's actually if you're a seventh or eighth grade ready or manila middle school you're gonna have four weeks where you're not you know running around to to all the simchas because or three weeks some people postpone but basically the heart of other region there'll be no bar mitzvahs because they can't unless it was postponed fine in order to be bar mitzvahed in another region you could have you could be bar mitzvah not a region if you're born in other re-shine 13 years later if if 13 years later is a leap year then you'll get um you'll get other reasons for example if you're born this year right that's not true it's this year's boys who are bar mitzvah that's not true but let me just think for a minute if you're born this year in 2022 okay uh 2035 will be a leap year so let's give an example if a boy is born in other re-shine this year let's say he's born on uh you know dalit other reshine then in 13 years his bar mitzvah will be a dollar under re-shine because he was born on in other regions so unlike the 13 year old boys now who can't fit it in in other words they were born in schweitzer they're born in utter they're almost under shady arisa gets left out but 13 years from now will be a mirror image of this year and therefore you will have a bar mitzvah boy born on arish and will have his bar mitzvah in other research fine i just i'm just i'm just uh like i i always spoil i mean or like how do you know in 13 years from now it's going to be a leap year okay you want to know how many people listening here you know i i do not know 20 35 it's very easy what you do is you take 20 35 and you subtract 19. right and you get 2016. and i know 2016 was a leap year because and it repeats the 19-year repeats but i wasn't all i wasn't a thousand percent sure about 2016. but but the 19 years before that was 1997 that i know was a leap year i had to go two back you're still not answering my question but okay about the girls back to the girls and now what's fascinating a girl of course is about smith's at 12 years later not 13. you will never have a leap year 12 years after a leap year okay let me give an example a girl is born and i use term cotton just for clarity the question perham cotton of course is the 14th of other re-shine so for a girl to be bass mitzvah on purim cotton she had to be born on purim cotton and therefore 12 years later you'll have a leap year right perham cotton of course is only in the leap year it's the it's the other region so now a girl was born let's go through examples here a girl was born on purim cotton of the third year of the 19-year cycle okay one more hectare one more introduction the 19-year cycle is set the third sixth eighth eleventh fourteenth seventeenth and nineteenth year in that cycle our leap years this year we've begun tough champay pays is year number six of the 19 year cycle so it's by definition a leap year year number eight will be a leap year in fact year number eight is a very late year right now we're post simplest torah you know october the sixth in three years is going to be in the middle of assassination because it's going to be a very late year and therefore hashanah is going to be um in the uh um you know after uh um october it's gonna be after october first so um it's it's a leap year so it's set now let's go back now you're number three if you're born year number three 12 years later is year 15. it's not a leap year okay if a girl is one poor and continent of the year six twelve years later is you're 18 it's not a leap year a girl is born in year number eight 12 years later is you're 20 your 20 is really the first year of the next cycle it's not a leap year the point is that 12 years later of a leap year is never leap year so therefore a girl will never have a bass mitzvah in other research cotton because if she's born in a regular only chance to have a bass mitzvah in a leap year is if you were born an irregular other and if you're born a regular order then your best bits will be another shiny and you were born in a leap year but then your basics will be in in in um in a regular other it will never have two others so it will never come out about mitzvah in in in purple there's another reason by the way i wrote performance and not a region in the question because without getting into i speak about this in the book but the 30th day of other re-shine is a very unique day and it has to do with a lot of it doesn't happen every year technically a girl could be best missed on the 30th day of research a particular day yeah so exactly um uh i see that mrs pensack put put up a column here from yate that does show your articles some of you at least an article from a few years ago if you click on that link you see we get so something from your something from your uh from your from your yate is up is up on on the web i don't know if it's every week or or not simcha says same as the yurt site with the others correct yes so well as i speak about that in the book the art sites have the almaq like it's really that's like and therefore the really maker in the meaning ashkenaz is that the icker yard site the primary yard site is actually other re-shine but we we're not the meaning is to try to do both but i actually worked with heinemann of course so we have opportunities to work when i was the gabrielle nagura um we worked on there was a a a guidelines for a valium in the um actually had worked on and i really expanded on the work the great work that he had done um and in there we came out that can you get the amino region it's yours right other shaney already is is is less kadima you do have kadima which means you know preference to ahmed but not as strong because the main yard side is out of rishi not under shiny so it's different than the it is different correct it is different right um so we did have uh a question uh via email that he wanted you uh ellie wanted you to speak a little bit about the world calendar that was suggested you know almost 100 years ago sure i actually have a a a piece on that in the book um i found it very interesting too when i was doing the book it was very interesting thank you for reading goldberg i see yeah i the world calendar was actually two versions of it several versions um and it came up by the league of nations in the 1930s and it came up again in the 50s it would have been devastating devastating as i'll explain that good show of america was very involved in trying to thwart the plan as our calendar i'm talking about now this civil calendar that we use is really archaic i mean it's based on the fact that julius caesar wanted 31 days in his month and augustus wanted 33 days in his month like we don't operate that way anymore we're a much more organized type of place so the organized people of the world said let's organize the calendar and they came up with several versions one of them was to say okay we want every year to start on a sunday and in order to facilitate that we're going to have four quarters and every quarter is 91 days long every quarter begins on a sunday so the first month is 31 days and then 30 and 30. so no more february 28th 29th february's gonna have 30 they call them january 31 days february 30 march 30. 91 days four quarters every quarter because on a sunday right 91 days is is 13 weeks and that's the basis of the calendar okay now let me just parenthetically say another version of this was to have months which were 28 days long and have 13 months of 28 days and then every month imagine you have to buy a calendar every calendar every month starts on a sunday ends on a on a on a saturday and you have this grid you know it's very organized very neat payroll is great you get paid you know we get paid what is every other we get paid every other week well what day of the month is that you know how does that relate to your bills well it depends it shifts no this is like perfect every other monday you're going to get on the on the 8th and on the 22nd perfectly uniform there's only one problem with both of those calendars and that is the the time it takes the earth to go around the sun is 365 and a quarter days okay let's let's put the quarter aside for a minute let's focus on that 365th day both of those versions you have 91 day times four is 364. 28 day months times 13 is 6p64. so okay if you have a 364 day year that's a problem because then the calendar is going to start to shift january 1st is going to no longer be the winter eventually and they don't want that they want those seasons those seasons you know those period of time to be in the winter and so on so in order to facilitate that we need to do something about the 365th day in our calendar it shifts the year a day later as you know if you're if your january 1st was on a monday next year putting a leap year aside for a minute it's gonna be tuesday because of that 306 fifth day so they came up with their following idea no day of the week the 365th day is going to be called world's day no day of the week and also every four years when they have a leap year it'll come at the end of june that'll also be a leap day no day of the week okay so now claudius remember shabbos is set in the in the in the creation then every seventh day no matter what it's as conducive and we don't care what other you know nations would call the day shabbos of shabbos and that's it so in the first year of this calendar or actually in the second year of this calendar what's going to happen is on the last day of the year we're going to be saying hiya memishima shabbas and they're going to be saying oh it's world's day it's still day of the week the next day they're going to say happy new year it's january sunday january 1st and by us it's going to be shaney so the last time the last day of the year for them would be would be shabbos oh no technically the last count today would be let's say the first year of this calendar shabbos cross shops for them the next day the day after december the last day of december would be no part of a month not part of a week it's just a standalone world's day and then the next day would be sunday correct sunday june that's friday come that friday it's really shabbos exactly so thursday imagine working and you go to your boss on thursday and say listen i have to leave you know shops tonight i take off tomorrow and next friday and next friday and next friday and the following year it shifts another day you can take off every thursday and in the leap year you're gonna hit twice so the whole it would be topsy-turvy anybody working would go back to the days of the of the 1930s when you didn't have to be champion shabbos and had to tell their bosses i can't come monday and they said okay you know don't come i can't come to monday then don't bother coming every every year there would be one day of the week that you would go you wouldn't be able to come exactly right so how would anybody work you know we broke should we work for a firm organization but but it would be devas it would have been devastating the plan was thwarted very interesting one of the reasons i'll make sure to take care of uh uh things create some in that plan of 28 days of 13 you would have had friday the 13th every month and in the quarters you would have friday the 14th friday the 13th four times a year that was too much for some people so they say people said we can't do this so hashem superstitions were created you know wasn't there once in russia a 10-day work week was there everything they tried that they tried it didn't take hold that would also be terrible because yes yes saying that that for going back to the bass mitzvah problem do you see what he wrote there for most practical purposes the girl will be bass mitzvah and other olive because we go with other allah forbade i'm not so sure about that in other words um a bar mitzvah boy is i'm not sure it means in other words i mean you treat them as if they're boss mitzvah in the first yeah but a boy a boy becomes bar mitzvah with everything and other shaney so i'm not sure what that means we don't we don't tell the boys bar mitzvah's dollar other and and his bar mitzvah's gonna be dollar shaney we don't tell him to do anything arisha with one exception one exception and that is and this i actually i didn't write it here but i wrote it in my safer charisma um and i there was a matter of my comfort as is that boys put on typically two in a month thoroughly right um so if a boy puts on twillon some people put until the day they're bar mitzvah if you're meeting us to put the day in your bar mitzvah and you reminisce this other shaney then put it on do it a month early in order to be eight to those or other certain things you rely on on uh someone who's a good doctor this is that a pus a apostle for a cotton or a katana for example to make kiddish for another girl right could a um let's say a kiddush emotion by day you come home from shul and the parents are at a bar mitzvah and you have two girls that are eating home alone um could a 12 year old girl make kiddush for her 13 year old sister the answer is yes she could but if she was born and older and now it's you know she was born half other and now it's half other re-shine we are not going to let her make kiddush for her older sister because we say she's not bad smithson until the following month so i'm not sure i'm not sure what that means so you're you're basically saying we don't go like [Music] mints that holds um uh not that miracle levy like the murray minster who holds that we go about our shaney and not macholics i'm not sure what that means rebellio ridler is saying that uh the measure says by before you go on a shout out to a belly ridler he's noted in the book and uh and and he has helped me extensively with charts um um as is um distributor weber from toronto something with different types of calendar charts really has helped me with some on him charts i could call him with could you give me the sunset in the barrow alaska police chart you know and rebellion was not going to rob him in the arab book uh with with all the charts of baltimore so he he he's in the book for his his tremendous assistance i'm sorry to cut you off says that that in in the measure says by purim the persians tried to make a 10-day week and that's why she needed esther needed seven servants so she could know uh which day which day was shabbos because they got confused it got confused for them um yeah um okay let me see if there's any i know there was there was a question before about about someone who went to uh hawaii and i know uh that that's the issue of really of the dateline which is not really the topic of today's discussion but there was a person who went there and he was questioning whether he keeps shabbos on friday or on shabbos and he said that the the khabar chalice told him to keep it on shabbos uh i know we discussed this ourselves not too long ago remember and you you're right so this is a big machine i should notice the 80th anniversary jim kippur was the 80th anniversary when the mir yeshiva and other tambidum were in kobe japan and had this issue and the shiloh was sent territorial and they had a they had a conference of rabonum and the passat came out your keeper should be thursday this famous event occurred then the the the him in hawaii you know they asked the original went ask the you know place him um i believe he asked the lab show was still living then the episode they used to ask a shia lover of a paisic and the pisces they're passing and they should keep like um [Music] like the locals there i'm sorry like we would come actually yeah but it's he like the local right population on saturday shabbos is on saturday that's the sock that they received there are again other daily pisces who say one ever behind him for example says if a person goes to hawaii you need to uh keep um [Music] on friday which means don't do dry rices on friday if you want to read extensively about this i i touch on it very cool cooper who work we know him as a cautious colleague who does tremendous work for the ou for many years um he had wrote a book on the international dateline and he has extensive discussion about even even the chito within within khabad exactly the sack and exactly what happened and he he analyzed even the the very secrets that talk about the dateline and he has a tremendous insight into the exact one huggers of hawaii in japan i read that i read that section it's very interesting he uh he he um you know he benefits a lot from chabad so it's a you know it's a pro about the section but he he discusses whether what the doing are doing there is is is really what others other lubashi should be doing when they go there was is that really what what the babies rabbit held to keep shabbos on saturday it's not clear that that's that's his discussion that's the other discussion is is that of course they asked to shiloh and the ghana how does that relate to a tourist that goes right right a tourist will ask his own bicycle right in other words so that that's part of a lot of the mechanics my my uh i just think that there's a certain push for the chabad shulhim there to go with toshitas that child is a saturday otherwise basically you can't do kirif if you have to do if you have to keep friday shabbos i mean when you're going to make your children on thursday all right again when are you going to call everybody to come to the shop for the same day right you can't keep friday and also do do do your your responsibilities so you would want to go with those opinions but of course they asked the shot initially right i understand it still has to work with the mechanics of allah of course yeah i'm not saying that that's the only reason but that's a that's a sniff to put you know to push you know to try to see what you can do um uh david says have two days of job it's more curious i don't know but you need to prepare for two days that's not so easy um okay rebecca i think we're coming to the end of our our discussion has been very uh very interesting again if uh anybody wants to get rabbi hubbard's book they can go to israel israelbookshoppublications.com and uh or in your local uh local bookshop um how do they get a signed autograph copy from you how can they do that come to my office we'll take care of you okay i want to mention that these these webinars are archived at stardashk.org videos or on our vimeo channel you can see we have many we have dozens about maybe 100 more than 100 webinars i don't know how many hundreds maybe that we've been doing for many years even before they became even before covey you know ten years ago maybe fifteen years ago we started doing them uh sim wants to know if he gets a discount for attending the webinar we could work something out um and and uh you know if you have any questions about these topics or any other cautious or topics you're welcome to call us at 410 484 or email us info at star-k dot org again they can follow up with you with that email too rather have a right those the the the the front desk forwarded forwarded to you and um you know we get attention absolutely we get many many many calls and emails and uh you know broke hashem we're busy uh uh in that and with the consumer questions as well as our regular cautious work um do we have any final comments here by hubbard before we we close it out right now everybody should uh it's you know it's a wonderful year every year is unique every year is different and um you know what are we gonna do what are we gonna do if you if you're going to urge yourself hashem after pesach you're going to miss a power show what are you going to do right so we have that now it's not going to happen for a while after now where you miss extended amount of practice right um you will be off a shabbos as we have uh uh because in artsy straw the last day of pesach is not the last violence is the last that pays off by them it's it's a regular shabbos they're going to lane uh the regular prisoners of shivula which will be mice and we'll be off all the way until days of when we lay mata mase alone that lengthy period of of a break will not happen until the 2030s again so we have a long a long way off until that happens i know i know the book i know if it's in the book okay i know over why it's so long of a wait why why we wait so many weeks to fix it right well i know rob who was out for parshas uh uh hazinu this year he wasn't in chule and when he came back um for shabbos minha when they were landing with bracha he asked about corey to lane the whole parshas hazinu and you know and for for cohen and including you know cohen and but it's a it's not a long parachute and if you land fast it takes like five it takes only like five five that zebra didn't mind i think when you're the role of the shul oh the love it was i think you can get away with something like that i don't think a random you know person coming and saying you know i missed last week do you mind if we just let you know that zebra could as it seem if you haven't seen it see we haven't we had that during covert right right exactly i was by unforgettable experience in baltimore the schools were closed from shabbos practices vayakupakude all the way through bahar baku kaisai so on we were in the backyard i hadn't been in my backyard with neighbors because we were limited to what was it 13 you have 13 people um and where behind him and had a minion on his back deck uh behind me and i said for tyra when i was my neighbor behind me um so he had a minion on his deck and we had a million dollars we did not have a safe torah at least most of them we we just relied to go there so we timed our minion so we could go there for chris after and then go back and resume so uh on that morning they said okay they're starting we started whatever this i think we had checking out at 7 25 something like that and they we got to you know to laning and we went to the yard next yard and they are we listened to laning from ayako all the way through canyon of my midbar that was one aliyah that was when i were behind him in the basket i told my son was with me who was home from shibuyas were closed and i said when are you going to get a chance to have two hazaks ever in one aliyah because we were finishing the only thing is pascal that kazakh only comes at the end of the aliyah you can't just see kazakhstan in the middle so when they got to the end of the bakuda and we were oh here's the first one no he just went right into vaikra yeah okay we released saw the kazakh how long did that take i want to say a couple hours a couple hours flowers yeah it needs to be also that's the one behind muhammad's son laned lane all the way back he took a break i want to say for him i believe he took a break someone else took over for him you know for that and then he took over there and then went by midbar by my midbar already then each person took their own alia because that's that was the first week when they were afraid to have about kyrie standing next to a you know an iola so by that minion each oiler learned his own aliyah to lane so when they called you up you were told in advance you're getting you're going to elaine shilishi so the person came up and laying the whole thing himself it was an unforgettable experience what we're talking about is not it's not so simple that a person who misses a powershell we just mentioned this it's not so simple that he needs actually to make it right also not it's considered an individual an individual certainly has you know this different uh there's a different shock that you can it's a hovis at seibert it's a responsibility of the of the community not necessarily for each individual all right remember thank you very much for the discussion and thank you very much everybody to thank everyone for for for joining with us and and listening and uh again we if you if you uh anybody who missed it you can find it on our on our website uh and we look forward to having you next time take care good night be well
