1203 passcode
2020 uh if we could just have a couple
of people who are joining with us to
chat with us at the bottom left of your
screen to let us know that you
that you hear us we just need one or two
as long as uh a couple people can hear
loud and clear great okay so then that
means we're we're we're okay um so
today's topic is going to be out of the
box certifications of the star and star
has given certifications on things other
than food and and and and drink and we
thought it would be kind of fun to
discuss those those issues um I want to
remind everybody that our past webinars
are archived at kosher class.org and
also on our Vio
channel uh you can go to Vimeo and and
um and look uh for the Stark Channel and
the last sessions that we had were on
misas which is one of the things that we
do
certify that's in the box that's that's
well I called it out of the box in the
Box very good okay I'm a little slow
today keep that one keep that one that's
a good one okay that one is in the Box
um uh and and those were quite quite I
think you'll enjoy them they have uh
pictures of actual muas the issues that
that that are with them whether they
pule or or not um we had Rabbi Hinman
followed up with Rabbi Englander and
also Rabbi
speiro uh to also also also spoke to
rabbis rabim about about mes um um
I'm wondering if we certify any tea
today because that's what I really need
my voice is we certify tea you do a
company don't you carington yeah more
than one more than one we lots of tea
companies that's big and te there's a
little my voice is a little bit on on
the on the Rocks today
um uh let me start with the poll that I
created you're going to like this R
buyer absolutely I like everything you
do thank you that's that's why I have
you here because you're I know I'm
Yes
Man Okay so let's take a look at this
poll uh that's coming up on your
screen um it says uh starcast certified
all of these listed except for one can
you pick it out that was that was our
email um about this webinar so we have a
bank uh Medical Clinic refrigerator Zoo
arog grow mza suit Factory
and and what was the last one material
for human eyes so if you if you take a
minute to vote um and we'll show you the
results afterwards which one do you
think is not was not ever certified by
star k like everyone's banking on the
first one well but we'll see don't give
away the votes before not going to give
it away the what's it called the exit
polls yeah for the people they tell you
who won
before before before the uh the the vote
is over
um um what I want to say first is the
reason that the star k gets involved in
in these uh various certifications
besides food I think uh you just have to
look at at at the administration here ra
and Dr poic uh are people that normally
think like that like out of the out of
the normal like what can we certified
things that are necessary for um for
certification people need things
certified or we're asked to certify and
we can do it we have the resources um
we're a certifying agency that involves
again but the but the definition of
certification yeah in each of these
unusual is is different cases is not the
same thing as what it means with food it
doesn't mean you eat it obviously but
I'm saying more than that though it's
it's what does the certification mean
okay that's what we're going to discuss
what the what would the certification of
each one be but as a as a certifying
agency we have the tools and we have the
uh the rabbis who are uh sort of into an
analyzing you know various aspects of
different um issues to see what you know
what are the uh what are the things that
need to be looked at and and and we can
be confident um that that they meet our
standards that's really that's how we
come to these things so raahan has a lot
of creative ideas um he created the star
k the symbol right that symbol is
copyrighted to RAB mosan our Rabin
administrator mhm I believe he did
create it um it's Unique because it's a
five five pointed start five pointed
start it's not a six-pointed right it's
a patriotic right American as a matter
of fact I once got a
question um a consumer was upset why
would we not use the six-pointed mag and
David star for our symbol why did we use
a five-pointed star uh and it was very
hard for me to explain to her that I
think that was the point we didn't want
to use something that was less run in
the mill right you need something you
can't I don't think you can copyright a
Sixpoint star it's it's it's something
that's in the public domain um okay so
let's take a look at the uh at the
results um it seems to be
um neck and neck between the bank and
the
zoo um let's end the voting and and I
think we can show you these show you
these
results um
okay so half of of those who voted said
that we did not certify the bank half
said we did not certify the
zoo uh some said we didn't certify the
medical clinic and some say we didn't
certify aerogrow and a few said we
didn't certify material for human eyes
so okay there seems to be agreement that
we did certify
refrigerators right and muus and and the
suit Factory that seems to be simple
this the questionable ones are the bank
the zoo the medical clinic and the
material for human ey those are the kind
of Oddball um certification that people
are eyeball yeah eyeball
the
um okay
so what does he say is
um is giving it away over here he's
giving the end of the story that the
bank that we used to certify Maryland
permanent bank so here's somebody who
knows the star backwards and forwards so
we'll get to that um
the thing that we did not certify is the
zoo that's the real answer the correct
answer is we certified all of those
things except for a zoo now not to say
that we could not have certified a zoo I
don't want to show you this R we could
have certified a zoo and what would a
zoo need to be certified for look at
this I figure the animals eat the
animals maybe no no look at this that
wouldn't be very look at this wait a
second here we go I remember that guy
you remember this I remember that guy
this is a picture um that um was taken
the caption is Silverback male gorilla
Lucas eats a matah a cracker-like bread
eaten during the Jewish Festival of
Passover at the Ramadan safari near Tel
Aviv Israel Tuesday April 19th 2005 as
Safari staff prepares its animals for
the week long holiday Jews are not
allowed to eat or touch leaven food
stuffs during the Passover holiday which
commemorates The Exodus of ancient
Hebrews from Egypt AP photo AP photo
this comes from the AP that I found when
I was writing my article on um on pets
and animals in that's on the K currents
on the Stark website and um that we we
would not be allowed to feed
animals on on PES right so this is right
up your alley with the the pet food it
is right up my alley gold is into pet
food so this could be you know there's
still room out there for us to certify a
zoo that that the zoo is running
according to that they don't
feed on on on PES now what does that do
for me huh what does that do for me for
you the zoo zoo the zoo goer that uh you
feel have to wor if have to worry that
there might be humet in the gorilla cage
jumping out of me or
something look I I I'm not sure what
what it would do for the consumer but
the zoo would need you know the zoo
looks good though looks good zoo might
want to I'm not sure would be willing to
put a
star Zoo right right now we would not
have to certify that the food that
they're eating is IDE no we would not
have to certify that because they can
eat uh the animals are allowed to be
you're allowed to feed them so they can
like order out or something who the
animals no you feed them pet food that's
not Kosher that's okay that's no problem
okay well I wanted on this topic I want
to tell you but we could certify like
the food places in the zoo yes that's
you mean like the concession stands yeah
that we probably do do we probably have
that that I don't know no so but that's
a good idea though yeah we once had a
had Bron zoo that would be great yeah we
we do it at Hershey Park about that we
do it at Hershey Park right we certifi
but we once had an application for a
company called kosher pets which I
believe is not in uh not around anymore
their their claim to fame was that their
uh their dog food the cat food was
actually kosher not just uh from kosher
animals but actually slaughtered kosher
we could eat it a person would
theoretically be allowed to eat it their
claimed to fame their claim not their
claim to fame but their claim was that
if his kosher is good for you it should
be good for your pet as well and they
came to us for certification which we
refused because that was that would be a
joke um it's not necessary to feed your
animals kosher it doesn't benefit them
in any way and um well and you can
explain about you have to be careful
about certain things you mean meat and
milk meat and milk like that right okay
that's true thank you for bringing that
up but to have actually kosher star k or
other
certified meat to feed to your dog is
not necessary to have that but you're
right there are issues like like like
meat and milk which right which uh are
definitely issues that we get questions
about um um is pointing out the same
thing you are um uh some dog foods are
BS correct uh dog foods are are B
yes some are right and you have to be
careful I get a lot of questions about
that about different ingredients in dog
food okay let's close this R enough with
Lucas and um and we'll go now not Lucas
no I don't know if it was a Jewish G or
not okay let us let us now
R um do this so that we can get a get
the full chat in over here
if you just will bear with us for one
second we're going to play around with
your
screen okay so now you can see on the
bottom of your of your uh of your screen
is's the chat box which we
enjoy enjoy the chat we'll make it a
little bigger for those of us that are
challenges with the eyesight um now okay
now um
let's let's let's Okay so we did that
the bank what's with the bank so we got
to the bank already the bank was was
Maryland permanent bank which is a bank
was a bank on on on rown Road near here
in Baltimore although it's called
Maryland permanent bank it's no longer
it's no longer around it's not permanent
it's that was only hopeful that was
permanent wish wishful thinking was to
make you think that you could put your
money there safely the bank is no longer
in existence taken over by something
else um but it was a Jewish owned bank
and they knew that they live they're
around in a Jewish area and people had
the the the Jews had a concern that
since they are a Jewish owned bank uh or
interest or ribus is a problem if you uh
put your money in there they pay you
interest and especially if you have a
mortgage with them uh you are paying
them interest which is even a bigger
problem which is sometimes also an issue
when you when you take out a loan for
your house uh with bank a you know
they'll turn around very quickly and
sell it to another bank they they flip
it right they just they just did the
initial work to get your loan and then
they flip it if that second bank is
Jewish owned you have a problem you have
to uh figure out better talk to your R
because that's a that's a major issue
paying you're paying interest to a
Jewish owned bank are there any
non-jewish owned banks that could be on
the receiving
individuals are there any n what you
asking are there any no oh any known uh
okay so Rabbi Chapman is asking are any
known banks that we know for sure have
uh Jewish ownership that are that are
concerns um if you bankim or something
there is an internet bank I believe it's
called
um okay the Name Escapes me um there are
there are some maybe will come back to
me there are some Childs are no longer
Jewish that's as far as I understand oh
yeah
uhhuh there are some known I if I
remember them I'll let you know so what
we did with this Bank years ago was we
created what's called a heter Isa for
them a document that allows um loans
from the bank and interest to be paid by
the bank uh and and um that's a whole
other discussion of what exactly is the
mechanism behind the hadisa but it is a
document that that re red does the
transaction slightly to be a business
transaction instead of really a loan so
there was a sign in this Bank when you
go into the bank you'd see a sign next
to the teller that would say all the
transactions in this Bank are according
to the bylaws of the bank and in the
bylaws of the bank was this allowance
for the heter ISA so even though you go
into the bank and you don't really know
what's in the bylaws but you're
accepting it that's why there's that
sign there if it's so be it if you want
to know you can have a copy of the
bylaws right if you're really interested
and that's that was now in inica America
it's not that common because most banks
are owned by non-jews but in Israel uh
I've been in Banks there and um some of
them have it on the wall they have like
a big you know they want you to know
that they have a herisa I know it's
become very common in now in Europe I
think in European Banks who deal a lot
with Muslims oh the Muslims also have a
Sharia thing where they interest yeah so
they have to do things according to Shar
that's
interesting okay L Al uhhuh um okay
let's take some of the uh of the
comments
here
um
Jeff they had het Isa this is we're
talking about the
herisa says um many Israeli banks have
branches in the USA correct okay so then
if they're owned by by uh I I would
assume that those Banks probably have a
header Risa and they're working based on
that and and uh you may want to check if
that Adisa they have meets your
standards um okay so there are other
questions about about how heisa works
and the Jewish person is a shareholder
and so on um we'll leave that for for
later you're welcome to uh email us if
you have any questions about this at um
at info stark. org or another uh email
address is webinar
stark. org
and uh hopefully we can uh we can deal
with your questions okay let's move on
uh the next one well those people that
listen to these webinars regularly would
know that we did want certify Stark cell
phone you can see the uh the starc
sticker on that phone that we had and
what was with that uh we were approached
by um a non-jewish person who wanted to
get into the market wanted to get into
the market and he had created this
uh this uh he he studied the the kosher
cell phone market and kosher cell phone
means that uh in the vernacular means it
doesn't access the internet it doesn't
have text um that's what generally a
kosher cell phone means just a phone it
just works as a phone right which is
unheard of right nowadays I happen to
have one of these smartphones yeah that
does everything but work as it okay it's
lousy
phone so the
um the the idea behind the coach's cell
phone is that people who want for
themselves or for their children many
times or a school for their students
wants that wants to know that that they
are not using a phone that can access
the interet um the internet and some
people have a problem with text also
anyway this fellow created this system
um and we tested it we actually we sent
it to uh to be tested and it came back
that it was very very difficult or
impossible to break nothing is
impossible but very difficult to break
and and we certified it and um there was
a lot of interest in it there was a lot
of interest uh some people did ask us
though why can't you just call your cell
phone provider and tell them turn off
the internet and turn off the text if
you want you can do that uh why don't
you just do that why you need a fancy I
think the concern was though that if you
were going to give this to your child to
your teenager let's say or whoever is
away or that they might turn back moment
of weakness but why but youate yeah but
you as you as the owner of the account
can have it turned off for them and they
won't be able to access it yeah so the
answer to that question was way we
answered it was well uh it doesn't
always work uh you can call your cell
phone provider and you can have it
turned off but a it doesn't always work
right B not every uh phone service
offers that that possibility especially
with prepaid phones they don't there's
no customer service like that and uh C
was that the schools uh they look at
your phone they can't tell whether it's
been turned off or not it's not
something that's obvious the schools
want a phone that they can look at right
away and see that that that the student
is using a a certified kosher cell phone
so you need something with a with a
sticker on it you know that has it's not
enough just to call the provider so we
had and what happened in in the end
though was that uh Somebody by accident
found a way to break through and was
able to access the internet on this
phone it was very difficult to do you
had to go through a certain number of
steps that you needed to know um and the
odds that somebody would come on to that
were very
slim by accident Yeah by accident he
discovered that you could he was trying
to do it no he was trying to I want to
give away the secret but he was trying
to trying to do something trying to do
something and he was able Lo behold yes
loone behold he was able to accid the
Internet so we removed we offered the
the uh Pro the manufacturer the option
to try to fix it but he could not I
think that guy was hired by the end say
could not do thata guy from lakeood was
who this guy the one who broke itd so so
we uh so because he could not fix it we
did not feel comfortable even though it
worked 99% but we didn't feel
comfortable putting our stamp on it and
we removed our certification although
the phone still works for most people it
would still work and and and and none of
these phones or none of the technology
is really foolproof uh for kids who uh
who are Savvy many of them they can
break through just because you got uh
some other kosher phone you should
realize that we have discovered that
most of them have some way some way of
breaking through um okay so that was
with this phone that we that we did
those are no longer available the starc
as far as I know they're not any longer
available right um at this point um okay
now well the refrigerator that everybody
knew that we certified um because we do
the that's a good sign that everybody
knew that we certified refrigerator only
keep kosher food in it is that it
rejects non rejects non look like the
table
so they for shab is they for shabas
right so they uh the just like the ovens
they have issues that they they uh when
you open the refrigerator light goes on
and the temperature gauge changes and
all these different uh the fancy
refrigerators the fancy refrigerator
referat are especially problem
problematic and therefore we certify
refrigerators that have a sabbath mode
that before shabis or before y you turn
off the uh you turn it into sabbath mode
and then when you open the fridge
nothing happens and it doesn't all the
different issues that you can
find yeah more more the more things you
have the more problems it is more
problem that's my father never got
electric windows in our car mhm cuz they
break break and then forget if you're up
the creek it is true one of the
recommendations we have uh is simpler is
better if you I bought a fridge recently
it was not an expensive fridge um and uh
and it do it doesn't have any of those
issues I don't need a sabbath mode on my
fridge but if you buy one the one that
has uh has has you know a water
dispenser and some of them light up as
you walk over to them and uh nice yeah
and and in middle of night I think
there's one that says you again that's
that's the one I need I actually okay um
let's look at some of the comments here
Rick says my cell phone is from Sprint
the only time I ever access the internet
was my fingers hit the wrong key
so I asked to have the internet turned
off on there and okay so Rick has a
kosher phone and um it's certified by by
uh by himself by by rck Jeff says has
anyone from Stark contact contacted the
manufacturer of the smart thermostats
for
homes with possibility of a shabas orog
mod mode okay smart thermostats for
homes which means I don't think we've
ever contacted them but now that you
mention it we certainly will
now what would be what would be the
point of of of such a thermostat why
can't you just set your thermostat I
mean in other words you have to remember
before chabas to put it into you don't
want to have to program it every shabas
and Y you wanted to know that shabas and
Y that you go on and off at certain
times ex that says it has sensors oh
they have sensors in you mean it sensors
when you walk into the room and you
leave the room and off yeah there's one
called Nest that's one called Nest
that's a problem actually famous one
yeah those are problematic yeah those
those I see what you spoke about that in
the in the in the hotels right when you
were researching hotels MH it turns on
and off person's in the room or
something right the my Artic call in
hotels we talk about this that when you
go into the room sometimes you even open
the door that activates the uh because
they're trying to save money right
especially even if they don't have that
a lot of them have in hotels when you
open the the if you have a balcony you
open the balcony door that for sure
turns off uh the air conditioning
because it's hot air is coming in and
there's no point in it that's that's
that's that's a problem but um yeah so
that would probably be something they
connected to the Wi-Fi and not the
schedule it shouldn't be difficult for
them to build in Shas and schedules to
automatically turn off the proximity
sensor you're right that is something
that um that is a good idea
um usually we we are approached for
certification rather than vice versa um
so really the best way for you to get
this done Jeff is to contact the
manufacturer of that uh um of that um
thermostat that you have and recommend
to them that they apply to us for a
certification we certainly would look
into that I mean that's definitely one
of our upper alley upper alley we have
refrigerators ovens we have where I
think we're going to have the star k
home one day you know one these home
shows you can let's go there the star k
home everything all the appliances are
uh right all the systems are star k
right
um uh there is something like that for
for um uh for your light switch
that uh that controls the light switch
you can program it for your area for
your time zone and it knows when Sunset
is every shabas where you are and it
will e will it will like disable the
light switch so for instance if you want
the light in your dining room on all all
shabas you don't want your kid to go and
accidentally turn it off um then you can
you can have that done and so you just
set it once and it goes uh it goes
forever or not forever but until 2050 so
that's quite a number of years
um Aviva says with regular thermostats
there's a manual switch between heat and
air conditioner some days you need both
heat and air conditioning that's true um
at night at night you might need heat
and during the day you might need air
conditioning um but I imagine that there
must be some there are some there must
be some sophisticated thermostats that
you can just set a temperature that you
wanted to stay at um and it can figure
out if it should do heat
or um okay how about a device that keeps
an object moving says Andy such as a
flag to constantly trigger the moving
object detector in the hotel room to the
lights AC will not turn off on chabus
yes that's one of our recommendations
that if you buy sit there with a flag no
I'll tell you how you do it you buy you
go to theel
honey you you can't know the the point
is on chabis on chabis so that you
wouldn't be able to do it yourself
because if if if you're moving the flag
you're said you're
contining uh uh manipulating it you buy
a a balloon a myar balloon a helium
balloon okay the helium balloon you put
near the thermostat you attach it near
the thermostat and it will move around
because the air currents in the room and
that fools a thermostat into thinking
that somebody always there and will'll
never go off the old balloon trick right
sometimes sometimes when you're laying
in your bed at night in the hotel and
you're still the air conditioning will
go off when you move it goes back on
anyway this trick of of the the balloon
trick will will help you you can't just
put pillows underneath your bed and make
it look like there's no some of them
work on on movement so that's I got it I
got it I got it yeah okay now let's go
to say plug in a fan Ze says plug in a
fan you got to bring a fan with you
right plug in a fan that that that turns
back and forth you'd have to be able to
put that near the sensor I think
somewhere near the sensor um you know we
heard about the balloon idea and it
seems it seems to have work for people
okay let's go to the arrow grow the
arrow grow here is this is this re buyer
you probably I remember it remember this
yeah um this actually growing anything
now no this uh this is in my office
still so that's you can see it when you
come in yeah what is this Arrow grow
it's a hydroponic you can't see it you
can't see it okay well just put it here
but I'm not going to leave it up here
the whole time but the arrow grow is a
hydroponic system um where uh it's still
for sale we don't certify it anymore it
is still for sale you you you buy these
little pods that go into the holes are
in this uh Contraption and underneath
there's water circulating and you put in
nutrients top is special and on top
there lights right so it has lights it
has has light it has water it has
nutrients and it grow
hydroponically without any soil cool um
and that's so what were we certifying
okay well they they came to us and ask
us for
certification um uh that's a good
question what we were certifying uh we
looked into a couple of things number
one is that the this system does not
guarantee that you won't have bugs in
the lettuce that you could grow in here
it doesn't guarantee it because if you
have bugs flying around your house but
it's certainly less likely it's very
it's pretty unlikely that you will you
will get infested uh leaving it in your
kitchen unless you bring in other
vegetables and put them near and they
jump from one to the other or you leave
your screen uh window open then they
come in but if you're if you're we tried
it here in in the office we didn't get
any bugs except sometimes we would get
like big uh flies and things that that
those easily you weren't going to eat
them you're going to so what we did say
was if you grow it here in this system
you could um
uh you could just take a cursory look at
them and wash them and and you didn't
have to go through the whole process of
cleaning them because it's unlikely that
they were infested to begin with you
have to check them a little bit but
nothing as not the serious checking
that's required there's also a br issue
the issue right the there's a issue the
BR on hydroponics according to our
opinion is sh because it doesn't grow
from the ground it's
not means the ground it's like You' make
on the water itself right there's other
interesting thing I remember when you
because you grew um Roma lettuce I think
one time okay and I tasted it m and it
actually tasted like M like horseradish
it was bitter remember that it was
really bitter this is what real ROM the
reason it was bitter is because it kept
it was there for a long time growing it
was it grows but then at the end it
turns bitter you can understand why Roma
is one of the we use it as nor that
question question is asked why is Roman
is a little bit sweet it tastes good why
do we use it for the bitter herbs and
the answer that's brought down is that
if you leave it in the ground it gets
bitter well you could see that with this
system that's pointing out related issue
now with shita right very good so rapan
is pointing out that it would also be
good if you had one of these now in
Israel for shita purposes you can still
buy them although they're not they're
not certified by us um but they're still
available um and uh if you had one in
Israel you wouldn't have a problem with
shita because it's not growing in in the
ground it's growing in water and you
wouldn't have a problem of the sabatical
year which is an issue with the fruits
and vegetables now growing in Israel and
you wouldn't have to either tithe you
wouldn't tithe them either true Muslim
Isis wouldn't be required because
they're not growing from the
ground there would still be Shak yes it
would be shahak um and so this is a real
option for somebody who is living in
Israel wants to get some they do a lot
of hydroponically grown yes the
vegetables in Israel already yes the
like the the katif vegetables many of
them for this year are either grown in
Jordan because it's outside of the land
of Israel or um they might be hydroponic
hydroponically grown uh but actually
they they they use Pete Moss in the past
at least I don't know what they're doing
this time in the last cycle they Ed Pete
Moss which is also not a is it's not
Earth it's it's not earth and it's not
considered to be growing from the ground
one other thing that we did certify with
this with this Arrow Garden was the
nutrient tablets that you put into the
water we certified that there was
nothing non- kosher in them even if they
were non- kosher it wouldn't affect your
vegetables because it's going into the
water and the vegetables are soaking it
up it's not a kosher problem but this is
a general rule with star that if we are
certifying something as as with a star k
it it you know we have to to make sure
that it is uh that it is that it really
is kosher it is kosher if somebody would
uh would want to eat it
um and so we we did check into that
another issue that we dealt with was PES
Passover were these nutrient tablets any
issue for Passover we used to get
questions about that so that could be a
problem for that could be a problem that
if there would beet in them um then they
would be a problem for Passover but we
at that point we certified that there
was no Passover problem theory if they
would have been B them right um at this
point we can't say what's in them we
don't really know anymore we're not
certifying it but at that point there
wasn't any
issue okay let's uh let's keep keep
going down our list
um um mizza which we we mentioned before
uh we did we do certify muas and sofim
scribes we do there are staras certified
local starcase
CER and there were also specific muas
that were produced in Israel are
produced in Israel how we certif a
scribe what do we do for that okay when
we certify a scribe we RAB uh is
approving there he he checks them you
know and he tests them he tests them and
make sure they know and he's approving
that this scribe is a reliable person he
doesn't check every muuza that they that
they sell or they they write but those
that are certified by us generally will
ask him questions and he can get a sense
of you know whether or not they are they
are reliable so so this um this uh
brings us back to the the sessions that
we had about a month ago uh I think
again it would be worthwhile look at
your email and you'll see at the bottom
there is a link to these uh muuza
discussions Rabbi Spiro from town here
RAB bamin Spiro who's a a very
authoritative Sofer he spoke
to uh rabbis
about safis and their Sho that was very
interesting and then we had raan go
through particular muas that we show on
the screen to show what's the problem
here a double word here a word left out
over here and so on um and we also
produced for our new kosher classroom uh
Stark kosher classroom which is an
Endeavor to
bring kous information to classrooms
around the world for kids we have
posters that are
available uh for for uh display in the
classroom if you're interested in that
just contact us um at info@ stark. org
or webinar at star.org and we just did a
mza poster right so it has it's very
nice it really shows you various uh muas
very clear what's wrong with them and
and so on so I'm a little bit involved
with the kosher classroom so just just
to yeah give it a plug yeah give a
little plug um all of those materials
that we have available right now we have
many of them I think there must be 15 or
20 posters at this point maybe 15
posters um with great information are
all available through uh.org which is C
n.org which is the the website of um
Toro um tasar is making them available
and these are all free of charge uh they
don't cost anything what would cost is
we we would send it to you uh basically
we send it to you on a on a CD um that
you can then download and and print out
copies as many as you wish mhm okay
those are great they're really they're
really a lot of fun there's some videos
there also mhm um let's run through the
last couple everybody because our time
is coming to a close um uh let me remind
everybody this these webinars are the
last um Wednesday of the month at uh
learn
kosher webinar that's how you remember
it ww learn kosher.com
koser uh and also by phone if you want
to sign up for the emails to be to be
reminded of of what the topic is and and
what the uh when it is send an email to
webinar star.org so the last few that we
have R buyer are suit Factory we did
certify a suit Factory uh and the
problem there are the suits could be
shotes which is a mixture of wool and
linen and uh so uh we certified that the
suits from that factory were didn't have
that problem we have also a a shot
checker for the little
star have it here we have a shot Checker
that comes in once a week to check the
uh to check suits of the community but
this was on a more on a scale for a
grandale for a sale for a for a factory
that we were producing what was that
brand name um l l i don't remember um
and people should know though that with
suits and shotes is that if even though
you've bought a suit uh the say let's
say you like a particular brand and you
buy the same suit again and again or the
same type of suit it just because you
bought one and you checked it doesn't
mean that the next one will will not
will be okay and the reason is that
sometimes they switch factories you know
they're over here you the cheapest deal
this Factory in Vietnam and then the
next month they go somewhere else not
only that but uh even in the same uh
suit I've been told that you could have
uh the right arm is put on over here and
the left arm is put on over there so you
have to really uh you have to really
check
it um
right uh Jeff says my mom had asked me a
couple times will it take someone to
become certified to check shot so
someone wouldn't need to drive to
Baltimore to have things checked whoa
okay we don't a little politically
charged that question we don't certify
shots Checkers uh you got to go to New
York for that or maybe l Lakewood they
do that and uh that's there's an
organization that certifies shess
Checkers I don't know what they call
them what do they call them shess
Checkers what's called shot Checkers of
America or something oh what's what's
the organization don't know yes there is
no the star is not over for courses
although we've been asked okay um Stark
Tech put up the uh put up the Stark
kosher classroom posters link thank you
very much
um and uh we says we use a photo cell on
our outdoor light there are ones that
screw into any socket and the light
screws into the photo cell it removes
the program need for sunris and
sunset okay it would stay on longer than
1:00 a.m. however using an LED light is
low cost long life okay there's some
advice there for your for your porch um
we also did
certify of course we still certifi
certifi um and got you covered many
couldn't resist many of you probably
have using starcase certified
there there is if you do you should be
aware that there is a letter that comes
with it tells you exactly how to put it
up and how to uh put it up 100%
correctly um we're not going to get into
that now but if you look on our website
type in you'll bring up that information
not not that you need it now but for
next year you'll have it um
and um mention this webinar I get 10%
off no no just kidding we did certify
okay material for the human eye what's
that all about uh we were approached
by a company that was making some uh
medical material for a human eye out of
um a pig out of a pig came from a pig I
don't think it was a skin in a pig's eye
yeah it wasn't it was it was an internal
but um and so we did not certify this
kosher obviously because it's not Kosher
but we did give them a letter that said
that this material is suitable for uh in
the eye used used in the eye for a
kosher consumer other words a person
shouldn't think mean a person shouldn't
think that there's some problem in using
non kosher a non- kosher ey piece of
material for his eye I I mentioned this
to someone yesterday and they said oh I
didn't they didn't realize that that
wouldn't be a problem they said what
about a heart it's like know a heart
valve or something from an animal um you
know is that a problem no it's not a
it's not it's not an issue um of course
you couldn't eat this this uh we didn't
certified for food consumption but we
were very clear what exactly we are
certifying so the point was to reassure
people yes who had to use this right
that it was okay right mhm now it's not
something that we do we still certify
this no with some of these
certifications uh we don't go out
looking for these but they they come to
us and and many times we'll tell them
you know it doesn't really need to be
certified like with water okay if we
have a water company that's a typical
example we tell them listen you don't
need certification if anybody calls us
will tell us tell them it's okay with
have Apple company like that too raw
apples okay but there they may be
worried about the uh the shine you know
that we told them we don't need to be
certified no no we want okay okay
um
um okay then the last one that we have
is a medical clinic this is a little bit
of a sensitive topic the medical clinic
was a fertility clinic that we certified
um and what was the certification was
that just we can't specify 100% it's a
family show but that the materials that
they were using were what you would
expect to be used and they weren't going
into their their freezer and taking out
some uh some materials from somewhere
else for the fertility purposes which
they uh they might uh they might want to
do to up the chances um and so that we
had a the the the certification was it
was a nurse um a fir nurse a religious
nurse she was the Mas and she was uh
when you wanted this service you would
contact her she was in charge of you
know of the collection and everything
and storage and everything and uh and so
she she was our mas and that's that's
what the certification meant over there
and the truth is it really does need a
certification it doesn't need ours
necessarily but you need this this
process needs a certification because
the the the the uh the clinics are their
interest is in getting results they want
to go to people and say we have a 97%
you know success rate and sometimes by
using other materials they will have a
greater success rate so therefore it
does need c it does need some somebody
this question a real question for many
people
unfortunately there are there are others
fertility there are others that do
certify this so what you're saying is
they they really need to discuss well
obviously they discuss the questions
with their RIS I think there's an
Institute called the Kua Institute P ah
right now they're involved with it I
think they do certify such things if
anybody needs that um we would certify
it again if someone would you know would
would approach us and do and and take
the steps needed that we require for
certification but that also is one of
the uh I guess you know that's certainly
out of the bo out of the box because but
it is something that's very it was very
it was very necessary and it was very
helpful to people and so that was one of
them um
uh zeev says certification is always
good regardless of the product or good
for business or good for business
regardless of the product yes okay
because people rely on it if they have
one that's certified and one that's not
certified they'll take the one that's
certified extra pair of eyes yes um
Aviva says regarding pet food is it not
also AIC problem to
benefit from something resulting from an
act that is user for some non Kosher
meat is taken from animals while the
animal is
living um she's asking about AB in aai
she's asking about benefit from Ab um
that that is a problem but I'm not aware
that they that they the animals are
alive I'm not I'm not familiar with that
I'd like some information aiva if you
could get us email webinar at star.org
I've never heard of that I'm sure Peter
would have gotten on that pretty fast
I've never heard that the animals are
alive when they're taking the food from
them there been all over the Internet
okay well if you can let me know I'll
take a look at it Peter is all over it
okay oh Peter is all over it I never
heard that I don't know why why why they
would have any benefit in doing that I
mean quicker guess it's quicker not to
kill the animals before you
feed okay um for shess is there a
listing of which suits have shess or you
can assume if is in another brand okay
no there isn't any list we wouldn't rely
on any such it's always changing it's
always changing for the reason we
explained it they may be doing it um
your your your uh you used to be able to
say if it comes from a certain country
then it's probably not but it's it's
really right if you have a John White's
I don't know who makes suits John wh or
whatever John Whit how about Macy's if
you have a Macy's suit it could be it
could be made um anywhere you know it
just depends again where they get the
best the best deal they get the best
deal quality is is somewhat important
also probably yeah they pay for that too
in other words you well so it depends on
on where they you know it changes
constantly right so even though it's the
same suit uh um you know unless you you
could know that it was made in the same
place at the same time but it's really
impossible for you to know that um okay
so and shot this checking is pretty
affordable and and relatively available
for most most people I would
imagine yeah shinness checking is a few
dollars shinness checking really has
come a long way uh and um there are
there are many people trained and it's
usually not that difficult if a person
lives out out of the way his only option
really is is to to ship the suit over
right I know people that do that start
like a drivethru shot they do do that uh
it's a skill that is useful if a person
is going out let's say a person's going
to be a a a a rabbi or a teacher in a
fire Community it is worthwhile for him
to get trained shus because it is
definitely a need and they can really
most most people will probably forget
about they probably will not bother to
to to send their suud in but if it's
easy to go down the you down the street
to somebody they will for sure okay I
want to thank everybody for joining us
uh I think it's been been interesting
and fun and uh thank you Rabbi berer and
thank you Debbie Rosenstein and Rabbi
Chapman for helping us here uh please
join us again next next month Wednesday
uh the last Wednesday of the month at
12:00 noon for a discussion of kosher
topics or
non non not non kosher but non food
issues it may be we never know what we
talk about we're talk we never know
right and um a variety show I want to I
want to to uh just take a look over here
at um
I want to take a look at where our
viewers where our viewers are coming
from um and how can I do that it's like
somewhere in Northern
Iraq is that Mustafa there is a way to
do it there is a way usually we have we
have we have people from um some Isis
guy from all over the world but I can't
I can't find it right this second so I'm
not well we'll assume we know we have
people from New York we usually have
people from California sometimes we have
from Spain David single says he's from
Chicago okay if a few of you could let
us know where you're from that would be
great Abe from the CRC yeah he's usually
on what's going on here he from the CRC
is busy getting ready for the AO
convention next week next Monday there
is a large uh International it is
international interal cerist conference
right at for Stark Prof for kist
professionals it's held at a it's being
held at a starcase certified hotel in in
resort in Pennsylvania called Capital
camps um and um so if you call a stark
next Monday and Tuesday you may find
that the rabbis are checked out and
they're busy uh trying to upgrade
conferencing trying to upgrade the
standards and so on we get together it's
really very important around the pool
that all of the all of the agencies get
together um you know there is there is
competition among agencies like any
business but there's a lot of
cooperation when we need we want to have
standards we want to make sure that that
the agencies are keeping to to uh to
some set standards that people can be
confident and to discuss what what our
research shows what are your research
shows what do you find about the bugs in
the in the lce what did you find you
know what are the latest techniques what
about technology what are the latest you
know uh advances that we can use to to
better the kosher um uh Market we have
Montreal New York Israel Silver Spring
Israel Long Island Baltimore
Illinois Rick and Columbus where is he
from okay we have many more who are um
who are with us Phoenix and uh Phoenix
great oh that's mayor that's mayor uh
Freedman I think probably right I don't
know could be that's our friend in
Phoenix yeah summarizing the AKO
conference sounds like a great show idea
MH says you want to hear all the inside
scoop yeah mayor Freedman that's who he
is Mayor Friedman welcome they want to
hear everything that's going on at the
at the the next at the next show goldber

Innovations what are we looking forward

year m c Gardens we thank you all for
joining us right we'll see you next
month take care take care bye bye byee
