we're here in the starer offices in
Baltimore I'm Rabbi T Goldberg and to my
left is Rabbi as
Englander uh Englander is joining us for
this special webinar on Zas on uh
misus uh only there is a scahill and
like
at Yesa
t and a certified Stark suur a certified
suer by star scribe and has many years
of experience in in h in that area and
since it is the month of of el the month
before R where it says in the in the it
says in the Holy books that one should
check their misas if it's the right time
fill this is a good month to get things
in order so we thought we would uh
present you with a a webinar on that
topic um a few technical disclaimers
over here one is that there isn't any
phone access here because if you can't
see what we're showing it really doesn't
uh have a point so there's no phone
availability it was difficult to arrange
that
um uh and to see the video that we're
going to show show you do need access to
a to YouTube uh so some people have that
blocked so make sure to unblock that
temporarily uh because our system pulls
in the video from from YouTube uh we are
still with we're hoping that you'll chat
with us on bottom left of your screen
you can see a chat box and if you have
any questions or you want to follow up
something hoping that you will uh join
with us if I could just get a couple
people to to resp respond that they do
hear us because at once I know that at
least a couple people will here I know
everybody else will he so let's see if
we have okay David says lab and clear
that's enough once we know one person is
is listening gets it then then uh if
you're not hearing then it's uh problem
is on your
end okay great thanks very much um So
the plan today is I'll explain to you
it's a little different than previous
webinars that you might have joined us
for r
gave a webinar to rabbis rabim about
safas and he we scanned in a number of
muas that had problems with him they
were fle and he described the issues
what the problem was why they were in
that pile of p m uh so the webinar was
originally recorded for Yeshiva students
post Yeshiva students rabbis and so the
language lingo that we used although
normally we try to translate everything
into English it did assume aiva training
which is what I wrote on the email so
that you should be aware of that um uh
that's that's a b is that because
there's a lot of technicalities that we
here scanning and copying and recording
and playing and all those things we are
we are um uh hoping praying that the
technology continues to work well and
that you'll be able to uh gain from this
session uh that the plan is to play
rabah haman's video in parts and then if
there are questions um Rabbi Englander
will be happy to take them uh if he has
any comments we'll stop so from time to
time we're going to stop during the
video and after reach muza and and
discuss it or see what else there is to
uh to bring
out okay so without further
Ado uh let's get
started here we
go we're going to continue with the uh
webinar on SAS with rhan we're going to
go through some particular muas
here can make a
okay
[Music]
so yes over here there was a blot of ink
that fell on this
alive a it's not really noticeable that
it's an Al if you look carefully you can
see that the the blood of ink is not as
black as the olive is if you look
carefully you can actually see that it
is darker so the question is can you see
that it's an Al can you not see it's an
Al so there's a question for a tin that
can you see the AL not see out so if he
says that if we are pretty sure that we
that you can't see it unless you know
it's supposed to be an Al then we don't
have to ask a t it wouldn't even help to
ask a t if you would say that we could
if it looks like that um either
attendant was asked and he said it's no
good or we ourselves it was no good it's
not so easy to see it from a screen as
it is when you see it in real life but
um evidently this was uh we got this
from uh rejected mza so evidently they
felt that there was it was
possible okay so let's back to this mza
here we have we have that actual muza in
a little um bit better
quality um to you can see RAB angland
you see the uh the uh the olive is
covered I mean how does that happen why
why why is there a blotch of ink over
the uh over that Olive it could be any
number of things first of all um it
could be just simply when the person
when the Sofer was uh carrying his
feather his his quill from one place to
another a drop of itat fell off that
that does happen uh secondly it could
have happened from an outside place it
could be that that isn't even a blotch
of ink so much as a mark from something
else like it could be uh things get
on uh it could be some other liquid that
could that could have
happened the the post gim the the
discussed things like Wax getting on
there because people used to used to do
it sometimes by candl light so what
happens when wax covers
letters told a story to the rabbis about
a Milla that was found in Europe um in
the ganza and put away with the Sheamus
as a as a pule Milla so he told the
story that it was covered with
wax and they first wondered why would
Milla be all be all covered with wax and
he answered what what you said because
they used to be by by candle light so it
was all it was all uh it was that's how
they wax dripped on on the on the Milla
so it could have theoretically been all
sorts of possibilities most obvious is
that it that goes with in now it happens
to be hierarchically that there's a
difference between whether it is covered
with a different substance such as wax
as opposed to ink ink it's considered
like it becomes part and partiel of the
letter and therefore that may render it
puzle which a wax wouldn't because a wax
is considered it's not part of the
letter it just covers the letter so you
may not be able to read it but if you
scratch it away and now it becomes
reible uh you know it can be then then
eoser as opposed to Ink you can't just
scratch away so for example let me just
explain that
point let's say the ALF is not visible
and you cannot tell if you would take it
to a child like R hanman said the child
would not recognize it as n now is there
a way to save this mza so you say well
why not all I need to do is take a
little pen knife scratch away enough of
that Mark until I can recognize the AL
again sounds reasonable no you're not
writing doesn't work the answer is
because that's something called toos
toos means that you cannot create a
letter through scratching away or
through erasing you have to proactively
write the letter so therefore if you
don't have what is considered Hally
viable Alf there and now you scratch
away the ink that has wounded and now
you remain with an ol afterwards you end
up with an Al that is not right so ra
also discussed the uh the question of
well so maybe just erase the whole Olive
and then rewrite it we could do that
we'd save a lot of muas right but you
can't do that either because the in and
muas is that it must be written from
beginning to end from first letter to
the last strictly in order and therefore
um if you have a problem like this which
is a partial way into the M or should I
say a long way from the end of the muza
and now you've written the rest of the
muza it's you cannot do it out of order
this is like as if if this Al is not
Gooser as it is it comes out that I have
the equivalent of missing letter right
and then it comes out that you would be
creating that letter out of order which
is no good did say that this would be a
question for a tin sh which means the
question for a child um because we we
know that it's supposed to be an olive
so we're you know we're all
knowledgeable all about that um but the
child just is just looking at the at the
at whether or not it looks like an Al to
him or not what letter does it look like
and said apparently the child that they
asked if this s for said that this was
not not an Al and therefore they put it
away as a pule m is there a question
here about
this
[Music]
um says if it was ink that fellon it
doesn't that simply make the letter P
because the different parts of the
letter Al are connected when they should
be
separate the answer is yes you're
correct about that that um if well you
see as R pointed out
the the question really is is how
recognizable it is so if something
happen in this case let's assume that
that blotch was actually ink so now if
the Tino can recognize it as a letter as
an Alf so even though that you can recog
even though that you could say that the
ink has now connected parts of the
letter but it if if
it can be recognizable by the Tino
anyway therefore it would be kosher
despite the fact of the so depends how
it depends how dark the ink yes it very
much depends on on the the compress of
the ink yes okay good okay let's go to
the next one
[Music]
this one is it the same
one let me just make a
bigger May
the okay
so okay so this VI over
here now this there's a question does it
look like a y or does it not look like a
y so the um it's not doesn't have a it
certainly doesn't have
the which is on the left side over here
it doesn't seem that it has that and it
doesn't look like I don't know what it
looks like it just doesn't have any
designation what it is so that was one
reason why was P now I while I'm looking
at I see another reason why it's p cuz
over here we have this n now in a n the
the neck of the of this upside down V
this should out of the
middle like it does in
um see you got another one over here
here comes out from the middle now if it
comes out from the right side um the it
comes out on the Right comes on the left
side it's a question of a different ice
because it may be like
the which
are and then that's a different ice and
once a different I there's no way to fix
it and therefore it would it would be a
problem now of course from over here
it's not so easy to see exactly but
looks like from to me it looks like it
would be possible
okay so let's take a look at that that
behind we're discussing a little better
uh quality over
here okay which line it is right right
right down here this one here this last
yud of V so there like a just a blotch
of ink sort
of he was he was bothered it doesn't
have the right it's a very minute you
can see how minute it is um this little
this little yud right here has the
proper form on on on the right side and
the left side this is just a little just
a little bit out of out of sync and
that's why he was saying that it it
might that that's why it's possible the
other problem was this noon here right
this noon here this is want discuss that
a little bit more let me discuss the
good from okay um this this is something
which is extremely common uh issue and
um anyone who is looking at a mza one of
the first things that they should look
at is the yud the yud in the in the mza
and see the quality of how the yud are
written because often you can tell a
decent Sofer from a nonent Sofer from
the way he forms his yud a yud is
supposed to be first it has the body it
comes down to the right as foot there on
the
right that's the major form of you the M
says that there has to be what refers to
as a focus which means that on the left
hand side bottom
corner there is supposed to be a very
small but noticeable protrusion like a
little point that comes down from the
body of the
Y uh it is it's a whole discussion it's
based on a g in in excuse
meas and the it's a question how to
understand that GAR but without going
into great detail suffice it to say that
the gamar says that a yud without an
Okat is not koser oat is like a
protrusion protrusion like a little like
a stem right St on the fruit right right
right exactly so
Rashi over there says that it's
referring to the right hand side that
foot that comes
out over there in to says that's not
that's ridiculous because without that
of course it's possible it doesn't look
like you good it's just a blob of ink of
course it's not Kosher you don't need
the gar to tell you that because it's
obvious it's not a good so therefore
says that it's referring to the left
hand side that the left hand side has to
have this little protrusion and if not
that's possible now is clear that that's
possible it's just is it referring to
the right hand side like Rashi or is it
referring to the left hand side
like now a lot of s in you know earlier
years the last few hundred years a lot
of sing were not careful with
that and the
Mish is very emphatic about this the Mr
says in numerous places says that he
went through the Su like like does and
he went through he so to speak
scoreboard or canvas all the weon him
and he says the majority of learn that
like and thereby it comes out that
without that little leftand small little
protrusion on the left it is possible
and therefore the mishura dees the
practice that some people aren't careful
with that he says according to most
Moston him that is possible
and he he's very emphatic about this and
uh a lot of problems with older that I
work with Tor are not very careful with
this sometimes and according to they're
according to most posting but that you
can fix in the Torah you can fix it lot
a lot ofs very hard that happens how
many yous are there in the safe of Torah
there is one good thing about this and
that is that although we mentioned a few
minutes ago that you cannot fix a mauza
out of order but there is one legal
loophole on that and that is that if the
letter is in the form of that letter
even though it's
hierarchically inproper
sometimes you can fix it if it's a
minor repair one of the examples of that
himself says is
this if it is missing that little
leftand protrusion that little left hand
uh line right
then if that's the only thing that's
missing it's considered like the yud
still is written and it is in order and
you can add that little line I do that
all the time but here it's missing here
it's just like a particular instance in
this particular instance you can't even
tell that it's a yud it's just a blob
it's not formed at all or whatever the
form is it's lacking the form of the yud
and therefore that's not let me take
some of these let me take some of these
let's take some of the questions
um M has another odd looking VI four
words earlier by can you zoom in lar
show us view and clear okay we can do
that let me let me try oops what did I
do where did we
go okay we want this okay fine he wants
to
see let's go back okay let see if we can
do
to see this
better
oops he wants to look at this at this U
over here y to see if this is it's hard
to tell I think can you tell whether or
not it's it does look like a a blob but
you need you need really to look at the
actual mza to uh to see that this
certainly doesn't look like this one
which
this looks okay right this one right
here I'm pointing to the the looks fine
this one looks like a problem but you
probably have to actually see it but
you're right it does y is right that
it's definitely worthy of sometimes that
and this
is you have to get the feel for this
sometimes a letter is close enough that
it has enough of a form of that letter
that it would be considered like it has
the form
but the question is will the child
recognize it as the proper letter so
then it becomes what they call a sh
child's question you ask the child and
the child determines whether it is or is
not that correct
letter sometimes as in the case of the
yud in the May it is lacking so much of
the form of the letter that even if the
child would somehow recognize it we see
that it's lacking the
it doesn't
help so often you have to get the feel I
myself have asked right behind him inous
occas when I have a question I would go
over to him and say is this a shic or is
it bule already and reab hman asked
Simon you know where is it holding is it
too far is it is it gone or is it still
possible that I can ask a child and he
could say that theoretically if he
recognizes it correctly and it will be
kosher the other the other thing behind
one point that was this uh backwards n
which looks like an S over here um that
also is a reason to make it puzzle let's
go to the next uh the next part we'll go
back to the video
now here
okay all right so over
here the um this word supposed to be now
for some reason they got connected the
DS and the bay it could look like a
me that um and this V also is suspicious
because it could look like a so it looks
like a that's sh ten but the this this
if it's a 10 looks like a noise there's
no there's no way to to fix it because
if you want to fix it you'd have to
raise from here till the end and
and sometimes the rest of it and there
it is he can't erase this so therefore
there's no way so became possible as a
matter of fact the CER evidently
realized that there was a problem when
he was looking over this line and he
didn't write further that's why there's
nothing else to this because there was
no now if he wouldn't have
written he could have erased all this
until over
here until the made the B longer and
then Ro over here but
on okay let's take a look at this one
discussing
um so he's talking about this this
problem down
here this is a base and a doll supposed
to be but it's so close together and may
be touching it looks like a that was
that was his question right and then he
said that the the V here it's supposed
to be a v but it's short so it looks
like
AUD he said that would be a for for a
child to ask him what that looks like
right whenever you have a uh a letter
which is questionable is it is it in
this case for example is it a y just a
little bit too long or is it a V and a
little bit too short right so that's a
classic case of a you ask a child and
the supposedly the unbiased untainted
opinion of the child who doesn't know
what it's supposed to say uh is the one
that actually decides what letter it
really is so then said but if you if you
um he would he could since the m has to
been an order he could have erased all
this rest of the line and then and this
and then written it it all again in
order but he can't do that because he
wrote the word Hashem here and that
cannot be erased so he said evidently
what happened is when he got to the end
of this line here he went back to the
beginning over here to write the next
word and and he realized wait a second
what did I do on top and then he just
put away the muuza and that's why it's
it's not finished this is not a finished
all the words are not here it stopped at
the end of this line and that was the
end of it well okay I'll just mention
one or two points yeah go first of all
and let's go back to that Bas
do now it happens to be that in this
particular
instance the place where the B and the
do
connected is in a strategically poor
location because it now gives the if you
look at it from a distance it may take
on the appearance of the
men now if it connected in a different
manner but and and in the manner that it
connected would not have given the
impression of a different letter such as
a m let's say it would have connected in
a place where it was clear that it was a
base and a race except that there is a
like a hairline of ink connecting so
that would not have ruined the form of
the letter the surra of the letter and
therefore that can be erased you can
just take a pen knife and erase the
connection between the B and the r in
this case I'm sorry the D and it would
have been kosher the problem in this
case is that it took on the form of me
thus it comes out that the B and the
doid no longer hierarchically exist now
it's not a base valid it is now a m
or it looks like a that and
therefore there
sorry it's
on okay um and therefore because of that
now if you fix that you can't just
scratch out the connection between the
base and the doll because that would be
creating letters through eraser which is
let me ask you a question let's say this
and do are not actually connected you
can see
a a hairline of space between them but
if you hold it like this it looks like
it's connected but it's not actually
connected you can see it's not connected
would that be puzzle no that's why
sometimes you have to look very very
closely I often uh I look under
magnifying glasses very often and I take
off my glass and look very very closely
at it the is that as long as there is
even a tiny space in between letters
even sometimes extremely close but as
long as there is a place SP can only be
seen with a magnifying glass it's still
CER be C still C why do we take it into
account what you can see with a MAG
because the reason is because that
although it's not it's not preferred
that way obviously but Hally speaking as
long as there is even the slightest bit
of space in between those two words then
Hally speaking you cannot say two
letters I'm sorry you cannot say that
those are touch
speaking we do have a we do have a a
question
um he said she say
it's okay um what age child boy or
girl okay it makes no difference whether
it's a boy or a girl uh the age of the
child is also it's a matter not so much
about the age of the child as much as
the capacity of that child that the the
Hally preferred child is one who
recognizes the
letters but will not be able to put the
words together that is to say he won't
be able to figure he or she will not be
able to realize what it's what letter
this is supposed to be from Context and
practically speaking how old is that
about what do you I I us assumed that it
has to be around the first or second
grader so that would translate into
usually about five six seven depending
on the co you know the the capacity of
the child I often when I get a child
just to make sure I will ask him a few
questions around the other person is not
the one that's in question just to check
do I does he is he is he good does he
recognize the letters well or does he
not really have a good handle on letters
then it's then he's no good because he's
too young on the other hand sometimes he
gets a little too good and I say okay
you're no good anymore you're you
graduated I I can't use you anymore so
Ruth is saying that the recording of Rim
is playing while we're speaking but it's
not we have to chalk that up to the
techn technology uh issues because we we
stopped it over here so it's not
supposed to play while we're speaking
but um that's what technology is not
always 100% um okay let's go to the next
one Rabbi Rabbi Englander this one
mentioned one thing about that previous
one also and that is um one should not
just necessarily assume that the sofa
was a was a roof ball which one in the
previous one where he stop where where
that b yeah the reason is because
sometimes he he may have written this I
mean the V forget about the V he should
have written a little longer but the B
doid he probably wrote that
correct and therefore went on and he was
fine
by the time he got to the to the next to
the end of the line and he was about to
start the next line he realized that the
ink ran on here I see okay and that
happens and uh you know you have to have
just the right amount of Ink on your
quill so that it doesn't run and
especially if you wrote that doll it a
little too close to that bige it may
have run after the fact but that doesn't
right it will posle it after the fact so
you know so he may not have been that he
was a goofball okay well we're learning
what we're paying all the s for why why
are we paying so much for muas right you
know 60 70 80 I know how I don't know
how much M cost nowadays but now we're
learning okay let's go to this one
here once you at in Shem so you can't
erase it so there's no no
[Music]
okay so
thism we have this
word now the question is does this do
does it look like a do or does it look
like a Zion because really the only
difference between a Dal and a Zion
besides that that the Zion has Crown
eyes is um but there is a u
there the Z is longer so here let me
look see if I can find it
down this is this is what a looks like
and this is what
a z looks like so the top of the Z if
stretched out it becomes a it becomes a
dollet so this was the question by the
way I didn't speak about these tag but
the sh's God needs t
and the and
[Music]
the that
if it
doesn't says that if there's no it's
Poss but and all the rest of do
not do not go along with this so someone
showed which had no t on any of the sh's
GS
so so the one who had asked the he right
away went and he put a big notice in the
Jewish paper
that that if there's
no is possible so
when if that's what he he was very upset
I never say such a thing and I would
never say such a thing all the make only
the
and therefore this is he was very upset
so the person came to him and he said
but I answer the sh and you said that
there's no T is
p says yes I did say it's posle but not
because it doesn't have any T but what
kind of wrote this so he doesn't even
know he doesn't know that he doesn't
know anything else probably doesn't know
anything else because that's one of the
element Elementary things so therefore I
hled it not because it doesn't have have
let's just make it a
little okay so let's go to that
one that's um this this one is a little
hard to
see this it he was talking about this um
dollar over here does it look like a
Zion or
not
um it's not the line is not coming out
from place right the the problem well I
mean when you have a short space like
that he was fetching because he doesn't
want to go the the word too far out of
the margin that's a no no at Le not
preferably so as he didn't space it so
well so really if he was on the ball he
would have you'll notice that there's a
little space between the ramit and the
iron and if you would have been able to
pull that iron back
then he would have made the iron perhaps
closer to the lamid maybe perhaps a
little bit smaller and then he would not
have a problem of fetching that doll in
do is the problem that the top is too
short the problem is or doesn't come out
of the right it doesn't come out of the
well they're both the same because see a
doid is supposed to have a noticeably
longer head over to the as as you're
looking at it over to the left now in
this Aion is a small small one and it
theoretically the leg comes out of the
middle of the Zion and on the right for
the dollar now in this particular
instance being as it it comes out
doesn't come out all the way on the
right hand side and it's small so this
is an example of where it is a question
of what's the story with this salad and
this may well qualify as a shus Tino
this a question of a child will if you
look at if you show this to a child will
the child look that look at that and see
a doll or look at at and see a
ey well he also mentioned that the the
crowns um on the uh letters that have
the crowns those particular certain
letters um it's it's not complet if
they're not there the mza wouldn't be
pule but he mentioned the story that
rosha Feinstein did did APLE mza that
didn't have the crowns not because of
the crowns but because what kind of
sulur wres a other it's indicated that
he doesn't know what he's doing right
and they I can imagine some other
mistakes that are not really um don't
aren't pule but show you that this is
not this is not a good Sofer I've I've
done that personally I uh I come across
certain muas and I say don't use this
muza um I'll tell you an example I was
once checking not AA but F and numerous
times long letters like nit you know the
N hit the bottom of the
parchment okay now you can fix those
theoretic you can just scratch away a
little bit of the moon and the moon's
fine and that way it's not it's
surrounded by parchments called M and
it's it's okay you can fix that and it's
not a problem of being out of order that
happens three or four
times and I put aside the M this T I
said please don't use this this and I
said why I I fix
it once you know if he did it three or
four times in the same para right it's
evident that this guy does not know and
that's like sofus 101 that you know you
can't hit the end okay if he doesn't
know that then I suspect that he doesn't
know all sorts of things and who knows
what's going on and there are certain
things in saus that you cannot tell
someone went back and fixed
letter it's impossible to tell right you
can't tell and and uh and you are lying
on the knowledge and the aite of the
Sofer that he did it right because there
in many of these cases it's impossible
to tell so if he struck out on that one
I then I became very suspicious that
this guy doesn't know what he's doing
right therefore I didn't want to look at
the muza even if technically I could
have fixed
it look at this one behind this one the
problem is he's going to say over here
is this do that looks like like maybe a
long here we
go okay so over here so that
[Music]
okay so over here we
have now this is a um long the doll is
supposed to be bigger but it's if this
line is too long it might look like a
now the problem over here is that a like
over
here does not have the top the roof of
it does not go over the side of the of
the foot by doll it goes over by it
doesn't but over here it did go over
because supposed to be a do but he since
it was a big do he should have cut it
here but he went down here now the
question is does it look to a tin does
it look like aough or does it look like
a dollar so um cuz to us we know that
has to be a dollar of course we know it
has to be a dollar because it's at the
end of but besid
that is round on the top and this is
square on the top so it can't it's not
either but say understand these things
better than we do and they said it was a
and that's why it
became um
[Music]
here okay so this word
of was a p of
in for some reason the S probably held
it over there and he answer realiz and
now the question is does it look like a
letter look like a man not look like a
man maybe it was supposed to be a pay
not an end of pay but a pay in the
middle or maybe supposed to be you can't
tell anymore it's watched so therefore
they
pass okay so over
here so this me looks koser this Zion
looks Kos this other Zion looks Kos
the matter of fact this is the beautiful
M I assume that the main reason why this
Apostles because he forgot the so in a
in in the first time it says of him it's
without it's it doesn't have that first
this one is supposed to be with
another
and therefore it is it would be possible
now
here let's go to this one this is an
interesting one
here it
is so behind is pointing out that this
uh you can actually see a little carrot
here that the that the S put put in to
show that it's missing a v
here that this this this word muus is
supposed to be written with a V between
the two Zions and this one is that right
that's the problem this one is this one
up here is written correctly and this
one is not written correctly so you
could read this from morning till night
and find this problem because all the
letters are written properly
right I'll just mention two points
regarding this number one there are two
words that are like that the first para
the word
toos there is written without out of and
in the second para that same word is
with of likewise in the word m on the
first para it's without above and in
this one it's supposed to be with above
of course in this m it's out and that's
the reason why it's possible um that's
one of the so to speak tricks of the
trade that person who that does muas
would know that that's one of the uh you
know Telltale ones that are famous that
you have to know you can see how s even
a good suur might you know make a
mistake which brings which brings us to
the next point which is that
um nowadays it's very common that muas
come with the heure that they have a
computer scan M and that is a good thing
to have computer scan because human
beings might miss that and computer
theoretically shouldn't miss that now I
say theoretically because even muas even
excuse me
computers uh I've
seen uh missing missing letters on
things that are supposedly computer
scanned and somehow you mean there could
be problems with technology is that
sometimes I I I once saw a para in a
filling that was supposedly computer
scan was missing a whole
line and uh I I guess I'm not sure how
how that worked I suppose that somehow
it didn't scan right and the computer
therefore picked up whatever was scanned
and said it was fine but the the idea is
the post G the Modern Day post gin uh
dating back about 30 years ago when they
first came out with these computer
computer programs that could that could
look at now they've gotten much better
um back then they even said that you
should have it scanned it's a good thing
to have it scanned because human beings
are human beings if you make mistakes
you miss things but on the other hand
you shouldn't rely 100% on a computer
because alas there are problems with
technology so um really preferably you
should have both also the computer is
not so good with the with the Sur of the
O right not not as good as as a person
actually actually they're working on
that the original computer scans that
came out fromon 30 years ago uh they
only checked the exact spelling they did
not even attempt to analyze the correct
formation of the letter uh they just
recognized the letter and knew whether
it was spelled right the word was
spelled right um over the past 25 years
they have been developing software by
which that they can start recognizing
problems with the letter that's very
tricky that's hard to do to create um
but there are now very complex programs
out there that will that will recognize
things and often they'll say with the
ones I've seen this so far are the ones
that will tell you they're not going to
P him for you but they're going to put
out alert right this letter looks funny
right this letter looks funny behind
them in said also that at Sometimes some
sofim would uh would count the letters
in the muuza to know whether or not they
were missing any but he said that that
only works if maybe you leave out one
and you add one somewhere else it won't
work anymore right if you if you only
left out a letter then you can tell
there not not not the right amount of
letters but if you added somewhere else
you're G to come out with the same
amount let's see the question over here
even with computer scanning there's a
human factor that can mix up which ones
were not scann yet and put it in the
pile already scan and does not have a
barcode oh okay the human can make a
mistake and he can think that he scanned
this one already right there isn't
any stamp that the computer puts on or
automatic stamp theoretically what
happens is that with many of these U
computer things what they do is that
they have a little um
sticky on the back of the mza or on the
T thing it it says
um something or other but who puts that
on the S yeah supposedly he could put on
what he say you could put on the sticker
onto the wrong theoretically okay it's
not foolproof right correct it's not
foolproof okay let's go take a look here
here this is something the regular
person can look to from today till
tomorrow and he wouldn't be able to he
wouldn't pick it up if he's just looking
he knows what the I is supposed to look
like he's supposed to know that this was
on the bottom and it went
through uh this could look like a
cof there was a g of smudge that went
through like
this um
the question is did it change the shape
of this letter is like a backwards e or
over here if this is connected the bot
so then maybe this is a s maybe it's a
me instead of a
tough or maybe it's a Lama like
this the ink uh going through
right
um yeah this one here
where you see this smudge of
ink and uh this question is whether or
not that changes what the what the lead
is look like again that that would
depend on the color um would the ten
read it correctly there also a question
of movil in this case movil means that
the letter has to be completely
independent surrounded by parchment in
this case the smudge makes a sort of a
connection between the T and the the end
and and that may may be a reason
to say that therefore there's a
connection even if I could read the
tough from here it looks like I could
have read that tough and the tinic would
have recognized it as a tough apparently
it was put with the p yeah um see it's
hard to it's hard to tell from the scan
um yeah go even if this was it's not
ideal no certainly not and if it's
connected to the it could be fixed
assuming that you can recognize letters
properly it would have to be fixed right
now would be puzzle anyway for the
connection because it now makes it that
neither the T nor the are completely
surrounded and independent by themselves
and therefore they would have to be that
smudge of ink would have to be erased
Joe Barry is asking um interesting
question can one add a barcode to the
back of M to properly identify it or is
that automatically
Poss adding a barcode like a sticker
um yeah I'll be honest with you I never
got a chance to find out this this issue
on many of those M I mentioned before
that they put the sticky on to say that
it
was it was computer
scanman once told me that I had have to
take off those stickies before you sell
them before I sell them before I put
them into whatever it is I have to think
about okay now I have found numerous
times that people give me m to check and
they're still
on uh I never I I would I I admit to my
Folly I never got a chance to follow up
why re feels that it should be moved I
don't think I can't think of off hand
why would possible maybe it's just like
writing it's like writing on extra
writing on okay but it's it's on the
back so um I'm not sure why why he said
why he said to remove it he since he
said that he must had a good reason so I
I always do it myself but I found
numerous STS that that's still on that
so um I
see time is passing here I don't real I
didn't realize that we are ready doing
this for almost an hour already it's so
interesting here but um let me see if
there's any there's another M I wanted
to
show from our collection over
here um you can look at this one here
you can see it's all water logged on top
you know this comes from probably being
outside and not being protected
properly and you get
it there's special muuza cases for
outside right yeah I often tell people
that if the muza is being placed in a in
a spot where it will be uh you know
subject to the weather whatever it is
it'll be subject to the elements that I
tell them to get a special case which is
completely enclosed they sell metal
cases that have a screw on the bottom
okay this is not a commercial message
but I'm telling you that uh most of the
muuza cases are not
watertight and they might be pretty and
they might be very nice but in the
meantime they're not watertight if this
is exposed to the El
it's not a gooda you have another one
even you can see
that it it it completely got
disintegrated over
here um and you see this letters here
are missing oh it's
missing so now this is all eaten away I
once opened up in mza that was similar
to that and it was first of all it was
crusted together because it had been you
know exposed to the water and when I
finally very carefully pred it open it
literally cracked MH and it the paper
crack the parchment because it had been
exposed to the element so long and then
it dried out again or whatever it is it
was so fragile that by the time I I very
daily opened it up it just cracked on me
like
do this is why we say You're supposed to
check youres every three and a half
years right so if you keep it well in
the proper place in the proper you know
especially if they're inside M and their
you know their temperature control
whatever it is so then you know although
it's proper to check you know
periodically but tell there you can rely
on that nothing happened we had we had
Rabbi Spiro also spoke to the rabbis
about mu's for for rabbis he didn't go
through particular M but just in general
checking mzas and and filling and he
said that of course a lot of people if
they have some difficulty in their lives
uh some something happened U health or
or financially difficulties so they want
to check the muas there was such a an
idea so he said that um you know so you
check your muas but he says many times
there's nothing wrong with the
m so so he'll him all you m are fine and
he says sometimes he gets the
reaction but Rabbi then what could be
the problem why am I having all these
sorus all these all these difficulties
why is it my mzas are okay then then
what's wrong so he holds himself back
because it's not his place he feels but
he thinks in his mind well did you check
how's your do you keep shabas 100% you
know thew the
39 categories of Labor very well with
all the m and shabas how about what
about all these things this is just one
place to start to look check M's but of
course the the person has to investigate
all of his deeds I will tell you that
there was a story with me personally
yeah I once checked in and I uh fixed it
it was it was not koser for somebody
else yeah somebody gave me and and it
was not koser but the problem was that
there were two words that ran together
in other words the sofa was not careful
in the spacing and he wrote two words
and they ran together and a Tino child
would not have read them would not have
known where one word ended and when the
other word begin that's a that's a but
that is fixable so do what I call
cosmetic surgery and you make it these
these letters fatten these letters up
and fatten these letters up and and
accentuate the distance in between and
you can make it recognizable okay so I
did that so I gave him back to I said
it's Kos so he says it's goer now I said
yeah it's go now it wasn't go so he he
was that kind of person say he want to
know really what was the
problem so this is a true story I said
oh there were letters words that ran
together which letters which words so I
said you really want to know makes a
difference yeah yeah yeah I really so he
said I told him I
said too close together the two words
the two
words which translat to mean and you
shall eat and you shall be
satisfied he turned
white
he so I
said
that he
said had like a shocked look on his face
and he said oh my gosh I can't
believe what's found said this isza is
my daughter's on her door that daughter
is suffering from
anorexia so like I'm changing
this you know like you got really is
there something to
it I'm not denying that could and there
are stories like that but meanwhile
that's certainly not the only Factor
right I also have not to uh that's a
that's a great story I have with myself
also we had um we had a m in our house
you're you're telling me that story it's
prompting me to tell you this we had him
m in our in our house um um and my
father he one of his problems was he had
a leaky heart valve a leaky valve that's
what it's called okay um and that was
one of his issues anyway we checked this
inza and the problem was on the word AER
the Sofer said the the the r looked like
a dollar which spells Eed and Eed is is
is like a leak or a canal or
something
flowing and the the key is that my
father's name is
AER so it was very uh I don't know if I
told him that or not but but that was
the that was the problem with the mza
now the the good thing would be if you
say well we fixed it we replaced it and
then the problem was solved that doesn't
work like that it doesn't
come doesn't work like that but it was
something that that it was uh it was
really hit close to home um Josh wants
to know is there an issue for Asad using
a vice versa yes there is an issue but
we unfortunately don't have time uh to
go into that now um you're welcome to
contact us or Englander can they get in
