hello and welcome to starkay's monthly
webinar
held at our Bolton lower headquarters
Hashem things have quieted down since
last month uh with the with the rioting
and uh
thank God we are we are safe and sound
we're here in our Baltimore headquarters
I'm Rabbi Steven Goldberg and my right
is Rabbi buyer thank you for joining us
again Robert buyer thank you always a
pleasure to see you thank you
and today we're going to discuss travel
a lot of people make travel plans for
the summer and that sometimes involves
some challenge for the kosher and Jewish
Traveler
if you want to call us and join us by by
phone
you can reach us at 218-895-1203
okay Robin bye so let's uh Jump Right In
to the hotels issues yeah and many of
these issues were discussed in our cash
discounts articles which uh which are on
our website star-k.org
and uh you can take a look over there
under Castro's current archives
so you go to a hotel
and uh you find that they have a
continental breakfast offered
right so you're all excited you go down
in the morning free breakfast
when I stay at those hotels that's why
you stay there it's no joke you're on
the road somewhere especially traveling
if you have a lot of kids and stuff like
that you have a lot of kids you're by
yourself or maybe a person right it
doesn't hurt
um now a lot of times they they have
prepared foods like uh waffles pancakes
these things that they cook up for you
those we cannot partake
uh we we don't have knowledge about the
ingredients and even if we do the
utensils they're using are not
necessarily kosher so those are off off
limits there is
um I think a mistake that people
sometimes make there are Waffle systems
that you go down and there's a bottle of
waffle mix and a a a a pancake waffle
maker that's from the same company they
go together okay so the hotel rents this
waffle maker and buys the waffle mix you
make your own waffles you get to make
your own waffles yes stay in the cheap
ones
it's a fancy system you go it's a fancy
system yeah you make your more you make
less
um so so in people think that uh
sometimes the waffle mix may happen it
has a certification uh and and then that
means that uh that's what goes into this
machine and therefore it's okay to make
the to make the uh to make the waffles
um
that's not necessarily true we can't
know for sure what was put into this uh
machine let's say the hotel runs out of
the original waffle mix and they go get
whatever they want to get and that was
using the machine so we don't recommend
that that system there was also ones
where people said uh claim to claim that
it had a certain certification it turns
out that the mix did not even have a
certification it was the spray
the spray that that you like a
conditioner spray that had a
certification and so people sort of
assume the whole system had the
certification
let me set this up over here Rabbi
buyers so people can chat with us
because we want to hear what your what
you have to say on the bus your waffle
experiences thank you
uh here we go like this
you can chat with us on the bottom of
your screen you know when I was
traveling in Europe in the winter so
they don't they have these breakfast but
I mean it's like breakfast oh yeah like
a real man's breakfast yeah you went to
France right I went to Scandinavia oh
Scandinavia okay a lot of Herring
getting a lot I see you know sauerkraut
but also like sausages and you name it
okay very little kosher uh available not
much that you could eat nut and
certainly not a waffle maker right I
think they eat waffles over there right
um so then they have cereal usually Dry
Cereal set out
um dry cereals are usually not very
kosher sensitive so much uh I could read
the ingredients set the kind that have
the little marshmallows in them if
marshmallows are a problem but um you
know I I would what I would do would be
I would uh if I see Cheerios there I
would ask him what is this and then I
would say can I see the box and I would
rely on that
eat eat the cereal I don't have a
problem with that if you have something
that's more sensitive like a pastry a
cake
so there you you know it's the most
serious uh kosher challenge then you
have to be your own okay they may bring
you out a box and show you this is where
it's from you have to sort of gauge is
that the real box you know I can't
that's what I tell people you have to be
your own machine
um
if you're in a place my personal feeling
is if you're in the place out in the
middle of nowhere you say where are
these pastries from and they bring you
the box you can pretty be much sure
that's what it is but if you're in a
place where it's commonly frequented by
kosher Travelers
uh you know they can't have like a box
of storage just for kosher people I
don't know maybe another one of those
guys without their kosher boxes you have
to be your own machine you can't make a
rule about it that's what I tell people
I once had a
I once had someone who told me when he
was on a cruise
um
and and uh he wanted that fish
so he he uh he wrapped up he got a
salmon I think he took a ride
yeah he caught him I I don't know where
he got I guess he they brought him the
sandwich that wasn't the issue and then
they then he wrapped it up in silver
foil I guess he double wrapped it and
gave it to him and they put it in the
oven and came back in and they cooked it
for him yeah and he was telling me that
that that he was able to to make his
fish the problem with that is if they
put the fish into the oven then you want
it running into issues of of Bishop
aquam we need to have the uh he he needs
to put it into the oven right I know it
should be visually throw or it needs to
turn on the oven uh so that that's
that's one issue that he should uh you
know they may or may not allow him to go
into the kitchen I I don't know right
you know that may be something that they
are not uh prepared to to uh to allow
um if you have unflavored coffee that's
fine there's no Kosher issues with that
um
or hot water from the urn that certainly
certainly fine cut fruit and vegetables
well you have the bug issues so you have
to worry you have to make sure you're
not getting buggy fruit or vegetables or
chicken
um but if they are cut fruit
and there is an issue that maybe they
cut their sausages right rather buyer
over there yes yes Scandinavia they cut
their sausages and then they went and
they cut your cucumbers common commonly
done right yeah because they used to say
knives they're in the same kitchen so so
we have to
um wonder about that so uh we we don't
particularly recommend getting cut
vegetables or fruit get them whole ask
them if they have a whole a whole fruit
and then that would be no problem
okay let's see what what the questions
are here
um Jeff asks
a lot of cookies are actually thought
and served and individually wrapped
before they brought out to their
breakfast pool
and heat they mean what do they mean
thaw and serve that's palominiums here
they hit them Jefferson yeah okay
um okay well if they heat them then you
have a problem with their ovens
some don't even need to be heated
okay well if they if they don't you know
often okay then do that then you just
have to make sure what you're getting
that if it's not heated it's not a
problem
is there a list of acceptable sharing
for kosher meals on European airlines
okay that's that's a jump to the to the
next part of the uh to our uh our
discussion
um
no but we promise to talk about Airlines
so we're gonna get there we're gonna get
there we're gonna get there
um
Jay says they wash hot urns with hot
water and soap
at the minimum they descale the lime and
rest with chemicals okay I think he's
saying that we should have a problem
with the hot urns because they may be
washed in a sink with drafe
utensils so therefore why are we
allowing to have water when they could
be washed in the sink with with other
things so that is an issue that we bring
up by the Starbucks yes but we have said
that when you're on the road and you see
what you have you're traveling because
there's a lot of doubts here on what the
issue what are the doubts well first of
all they use soap they might have used
up they probably use sober soap soap it
causes a bed right taste there might not
have been anything in the sink at the
time when they watched it they might
have been washed completely separately
um the water might not have been
hot enough to cause any sort of glios so
it's sort of um
they may not be washing them at all or
they may not be watching them at all
it's very positive yes right
right so because of all those downs we
you know when you're traveling we say
it's uh
is asking if you have cereals in their
container if the hotel says kosher by is
that okay I guess she means that they
put a little sign there you know that
you ask them and they say it's kosher by
uh whatever it's a circle use
certification I would I would ask them
to see the container that it comes in at
the minimum yeah the Holiday Inn is not
going to put kosher by the Holiday Inn
in you know in Idaho is not going to put
kosher by OU I'll say you're seriously
if they have enough people asking them
they might
Hotel
Hershey says I have heard that some
okays cut fruit and vegetables a large
cruise ships okay not sure what that
means some okay
some say it's okay I think he means okay
some say that it's okay if you have cut
fruit and vegetables yes that is true
because and the logic behind that is if
you have
um many many Cuts let's say you had a
knife that was used for non-kosher meat
for your sausages and then they cut a
cucumber well they didn't just cut one
cucumber they will cut a lot of
cucumbers and a lot of salad so by the
time it gets to your cucumber the one
that you picked up
we can assume that whatever was there in
that kosher was wiped off uh from the
previous cuts there is such a logic
brought down in the uh
um in the Rama uh okay there is
something to rely on um I've asked right
behind them in our hello sake and he's
not keen on relying that as a blanket uh
leniency but there is there are those
that would would say that so I can
imagine that
um
Jeff says at the College of work we
serve serial in the tall dispensers and
place a cutout from the cereal box in
the front panel
not all the cereals that have served our
kosher if they watch it in between will
the serum be acceptable
uh yes that cereal wouldn't be affected
if it was cleaned in between
um and um
Spencer was cleaned in between that
wouldn't be an issue
again if if if it's a simple cereal like
a Cheerios like a Rice Krispies like
corn flakes and they put the sign out
they cut out they put a cut out of the
box in the front I think that that would
be acceptable as well because those are
anyway uh are usually fine kosher I
think that are more
that you at least would want to see the
box if if you can okay now um
most people don't know but if you go to
a hotel uh the more upscale Hotel you
can order Airline meals well they charge
you for it but you can handle uh um
a hot meal you can order an airline meal
many hotels allow that
um and similarly you have to deal with
the with the meal as you do on an
airplane
um you're going to your hotel room and
you have a refrigerator
uh can you use the refrigerator well yes
usually they're yes okay next but if the
refrigerator is clean usually it is
assuming it's clean and it's not clean
and you can ask for another room right
or you leave the hotel right yeah people
don't realize if they leave let's say
meet
or fish in there in the refrigerator and
then they go out
uh then you get into an issue called bus
station Asylum that the meat is left
without seals on on Watch and people are
coming into your room so you need to be
aware of that either you can leave the
meat sealed up or there's something
called TVs iron if you recognize the
meat there's a certain look to it it's a
certain shape it's a certain book and if
you recognize that meat and it couldn't
be switched or anything else that's also
a leniency but the packaging
be enough of a three assigned uh no
because you could take it I'll take that
package and put something else in but
you recognize the the the the the meat
itself
unusual meat yes I want to say behind
the man what does meat look like I mean
me this meat unique meat so he said uh
he answers me very in a cute way he said
is a cow a cow cow when you see a cow it
all looks the same to you so I said yeah
he said well no to a farmer he has 500
cows he knows they all look different
each cow looks a little different so if
you know me the meat looks meat looks
different
um
okay
um
Shoshan asks
another question about hotel exactly but
can one eat fruit and vegetables sold on
the streets who only sells fruits I
don't have any problem with that I mean
if you uh then they have they should
have a dedicated knife
um that's not uh that's not a real
concern so there's no real issue with
that plus the logic that we mentioned
before they had to do a lot of cutting
by the time you get there so it's that
that would be fine
Moshi says can you eat Herring at the
hotel serve not cut up
well the Herring you have to have a
Hampshire certification on the Herring
how do you know what sharing this is no
you couldn't answer it no you couldn't
eat the hair right
um okay
Jeff says if you if you left it with the
label down and now it's labeled up in
the fridge
okay you have a problem if you left it
now you see that they they went through
your fridge uh yeah if you look in the
Spy movies you know they put like a
little piece of string by the door to
see if they don't come into the room
well someone is coming in the room
dental floss and put it by the fridge or
something someone is coming in your room
to clean your room one way to keep
people out of your room is do not
disturb if they do not disturb sign on
which helps we're gonna talk about
Shabbos issues in a minute which help
helps for Shabbos issues as well let's
say you leave the lights off in your
room or on and you want them to stay
like that all Shabbos and they come in
they do their cleaning shop this morning
and they leave the whites however they
you know they don't remember what you
had they figured you'll fix it when you
come back in right so if you put the Do
Not Disturb selling outside your door
I've heard that that's very effective
way of keeping uh out and then some
hotels this a a
age made that goes in even though they
do not disturb sign is there she could
be fine if she goes in when it's on that
they treat that more severely than if
they steal from the room yeah because do
not disturb means do not disturb okay
guests don't want to be disturbed so if
you put that aside that will help you
keep people away from from your room an
ice maker
usually usually an ice maker on the
floor we have no problem with that the
ice makers just make ice there's no
Kosher problem with that coffee makers
in the room
um
in the olden days they used to have
caress right and ramahanyan was afraid
that people use the carafes for other
things people who are in kosher uh may
put soup in the carafe they may who
knows what they put in the carafe and
you're coming and drinking hot water out
of it that's a problem but now
the places I've seen have these one cup
dispensers yes yes mostly so it
dispenses directly into the cup right it
doesn't really hold anything besides
right uh water and your coffee so I
think those would be okay those would be
as long as as you know if it's flavored
it should have a certification on it
uh microwaves in the room who is asking
about microwaves okay if the microwave
is clean I mean this would apply not
just in the room I would imagine this
applies anywhere we had the microwave
yes micellacious yes things like that
right
um
you should you you should clean it out
make sure that it's not uh not not uh it
doesn't have any residue and then uh
double wrap it and then you can use you
can use the microwave it's no problem
don't microwave it don't wrap it with
aluminum foil aluminum foil that's
that's not going to be good but that
would be true about any microwave in any
uh non-kosher
that would not apply on Facebook peso
Passover is a whole different ballgame
Rabbi Chapman is bringing up uh our
producer is bringing up a whole new uh
can of worms
no going to a hotel on on on pesach he
would go to a kosher Hotel hopefully one
peso you would go to a kosher hotel if
you're staying there for yante but what
if you're going during the intermediate
days the whole of my days uh people go
away
um and so there are a couple of things
you want you would want to be concerned
about of course this is a year off but
uh we're able to prepare early
um when you go into the room you should
do a check for hummus without the bracha
but because comments without the Bronco
um that would apply even in the kosher
Hotel
because they're not necessarily checking
the rooms they're the people running the
program are just assuming the rooms are
clean but it would be a good idea to
make sure there's nothing nothing there
no comments there and secondly there is
a usually
a um they're called mini bars minibars
which is you really stay in the fancy
places
a drawer or a refrigerator that has in
it some uh some product that they want
to sell to you at the absorbitant prices
so even if you're not eating any of that
on on peso there's a problem having that
there in your room in your room because
you have responsibility for it if
something is taken they're going to
charge you for it that's called a
horizon you have responsibility for it
and you're not allowed to have
responsibility for pace for comments on
pesos so if there are cookies they are
pretzels uh you you have to go down to
the the management tell them listen
please either remove everything from my
room
or you can leave it there but I have no
responsibility for it there's
something's missing I'm not paying for
it you have to make that arrangement
with the with the uh with the hotel
um
just as an aside on Shabbos let's say
you're in the hotel and you want to use
something from not not on pay stuff you
want to use something from the mini bar
on Shabbos they're going to charge you
for it right if you take it out they're
going to charge you for it so then
there's two types of mini bars at least
one is where it's not electronic I don't
know from these things
just in the hotels that I stay in there
you right on the other hand you're great
that's right yeah I only go Five Stars
host rates that's right there's a
sidekick is like that's right
um well I have to stay in hotels and
know what to talk about yeah yeah
it was all work related and taxes are
protected so so so there are two types
of money bars one is where you you pull
out the food it's not electronic and
then the uh the Meg will come by when
she cleans and she'll knock down what
you took and then they'll put it on your
bill the other is electronic where
immediately when you take it off there's
a sensor there that will record that
they're going to charge you for it so
the first type is not any problem at all
on Chavez if you want to use that you
can use it on Jarvis
um you're taking food that you're not
getting charged for right away they're
going to settle with you afterwards
you're allowed to to go to a store even
though even those regular store and take
food if they will let you and then
you'll settle within after shop if
you're allowed to do that it's not cool
that you purchased it on jogs
um they're gonna they're gonna they're
gonna arrange it later they come under
at their own on their own at their own
time and they they take care of it the
one that's electronic you can't do
because that's being recorded
let's take um
some questions here
uh
Shoshan is asking
did you answer the coffee maker yes we
said that the coffee maker that is one
cup
at the time that's no problem we can
assume that people do not use that for
anything else besides besides coffee we
have a right to make such an assumption
it's only set up for that especially
since the people who would want to use
such a thing for soup would be the
kosher people everybody else
throw down the rest
of their own pizza or whatever so
that's a uh okay now let's move on to uh
to Shabbos
you can shop these issues at a at a
hotel
um
the key is to check things out the pun
that was not intended the key is to
check things out before Shabbos you know
don't just assume that the hotel will be
will be okay call the hotel find out you
know what the issues are what your
challenges are going to be and how
you're going to solve them
um and when you get there
introduce yourself to the to the hotel
again we're not talking about where it's
a kosher run right program but you're
staying at a non-kosher hotel you know
explain to them that you have some
Sabbath needs and most hotels
um
to helping their guests okay one one
thing that you may not realize is when
you go into your room
when you open the door you might be
turning on the lights or turning on the
air conditioning everything now is
trying to save money when you leave the
room you close the door they they sense
that and the lights go off and you come
in the lights go on
um or even in your room there's a closet
you open the closet the lights
automatically go on so yeah you have to
you have to be aware of that uh
beforehand and find some way if there's
if there's a way to disable it you can
have a real problem if you're there and
you'll find that that's what what is
going on
um
there is there is a trick that I that
that I've heard of that if you when you
open the balcony door also sometimes the
air conditioning goes off because they
don't want all the air going out into
the balcony so that means you can't use
a balcony but there's some thermostats
that have a setting that you could set
to override that some sort of super
setting down continuing yeah like a VIP
setting or something to that effect you
can ask the the management if there's a
way of doing that
um
there is another uh concern with the air
conditioning even if the door doesn't
enable it but sometimes moving around in
your room right so if you're still
they think that you might have left the
room and everything
stops now right if you're just lying in
your bed it may not realize that and
include the air conditioning could go
off but then when you move around a
little bit it will go back on that
that's that's not ideal for Shabbos it's
it's if that's you know really Intel for
various reasons it may be acceptable for
for Shabbos but there is a trick I saw
to disable that at least to bring the
balloon the balloon trick if you have a
helium balloon so if you just leave it
tie it near the thermostat the little
currents that are in every room will
move it ever so slightly and that will
uh that will keep it going all sharp so
you come into your hotel with your
theoretically this is what people argue
I mean especially in Israel and then I
rock you open the door to your house
yeah you could mess around with the
thermostat
there it's not direct it's not direct
it's very indirect
um
okay
um
Jeff says soft pretzels I'm not sure
what the question is soft pretzels if
they sell soft pretzels okay heshi says
if one buys fruit on the street how can
we know the knife is kosher is that do
they sell enough fruit to prevent
problems
oh I mentioned that before that if
they're only selling fruit
that's what it looks like to us
um plus the fact that we have the logic
that they cut many many pieces so I I
wouldn't have an issue with that um
could be other people too I don't think
that's a problem
um hot water on the plane Shoshone wants
to know
uh sometimes I think they bring in a pot
oh yes that's okay you can you can use
that one on a plane using the logic that
we mentioned before even if they wash it
it's with soap and so on and so forth
Adam says is a hotel considered as one
Rashid with regard to carrying in the
corridors okay there is uh that's a
whole lengthy topic
um
if you're in an apartment building
you own or you rent your apartment he
rents his apartment on Shabbos unless
you make arrangements you're not allowed
to carry it in a corridor right you
share within a car a car they're right
you're not allowed to carry from your
apartment to the hallway to his
apartment you're not allowed to do that
um you have to make what's called an
aircraft service in a hotel since a
hotel is owned by one management uh
there and you're not really renting them
it's not you don't have real rights to
the room there are many who are lenient
and say that you do not need to make a
uh what's called air fateris uh there
are those that astringent
I I I imagine that most people probably
would be leaning in this area it's not
so easy to make an air series
um also if you are the only Jewish
couple the Jewish Family right in the
hotel then there's no question at all
the question doesn't even begin so if
you're really a mistakes then you can
assume that you are the only family and
don't have to worry about this at all
uh
Jeff says there isn't is there an okay
Hotel keys for Shabbos
okay what do you do with the hotel Keys
the the manual keys are a thing of the
past more or less
there are still some hotels near some
Jewish areas like in Los Angeles and so
on that still have
Lux with regular keys just with it just
right just because if you want to make
Jewish rooms Jewish rooms right just if
you want to make a simple there you want
to make a Chevrolet Broncos you have
something you want to have a convention
they know that there's enough people and
then therefore it's worth it for them to
keep the key system on some of the rooms
but mostly by and large is with
electronic keys and uh so there are
different ways people have with dealing
with this one we just had that last
couple weeks ago to start gay uh yeah
right then like the doors open doors
open right some people will leave the
doors open
uh without locking them you'd have to uh
in a typical Hotel you can't just it
will lock automatically you'd have to
find some way to disable it tape it up
taped up the lock so that it won't it
won't lock when you leave right
um
can't recommend that you do that you
have to worry about your safety uh but I
can tell you A lot of people that's what
they do
the option they were behind them in
offers holocacy is to leave your key
with the desk make arrangements with
them before Shabbos tell them that you
will need themselves a couple of times
on job is to open your door you go down
you ask them to open your door and uh
there's a lot of reason that's motor
it's called
Mitzvah you have to go to sleep you have
to get something you have to get your
sitter I wouldn't use that too many
times on jobs I wouldn't want to keep
doing that and keep bothering them but
if you really need to get into your room
that is uh that's that's the option
um many of the doors now going in and
out are electronic so that poses a
challenge
right if you need to get out you wait
for somebody to go wait for a non-jewish
person to go ahead of you
um there are sometimes doors that are
not electronic uh we've found that staff
doors doors that the hotel staff uses to
go in and out uh I'm not that fancy
that's permission before you do that
right ask permission right it may be in
an area where you're not supposed to
Don't Push the door where it says don't
push myself alarm okay leave the sign
right
um
shoshana says rings on gas electric top
okay to cook with our own pots on there
she's talking about in the in the room
not on our jobs right we're talking
about nylon Chavez cooking on a in a
hotel on a um
people rent a place for a while right to
have a kitchen there and they want to
use it so as really as long as it's
clean
you just turn it on for for a couple
minutes and that will be fine you're
basically yeah that's not that's no
problem at all okay um lighting light if
you're there for Friday for Friday night
you want to light candles in the hotel
some hotels do not allow you to light
candles some hotels do allow you to like
candles we do not recommend lighting
candles unless they allow you to do that
um if it's against their rules then it's
not right that you they have a right to
be careful about their you know their
their their their fire rules right
they're scared that something will burn
down then they're right to be scared and
so but not every hotel is against it
some hotels don't mind and some hotels
even if you like a candle or two they
will not set off the smoke detector so
you have to speak with them about that
before shops if they do not allow you to
have Candles there are other options you
can light in incandescent Bowl if you're
going out of style fast in fact you can
that's the kind that doesn't have the
the see-through ones right see-through
ones that you can see the filament right
um You can even have a little a little
nightlife yeah or or even in a uh even a
flashlight that's it has an incandescent
bulb again they're going the most Cinema
now being made LED and other types it
has to be an incandescent bulb which is
actually a fire and it should have fresh
batteries because you don't want it has
to last until it gets dark so you want
to turn on that flashlight before it
shabs when lighting candles you can make
a broth on it I know it's a little odd
but you can and and then and if you want
to be something for habella
it's more of an issue it's not so simple
but for Friday night it is uh uh easier
how locally to rely on this
um and even they have two flashlights
and that way you can keep the custom of
having at least two two candles
um
okay uh time is flying Rabbi buyer okay
um feels like we're on vacation yeah
okay they're going back they want to go
back to the salmon on the cruise I guess
we have a lot of people going on cruises
I I uh aren't you going along no
research
I have I have an article on cruises
um and I've never been on a cruise for
uh I I did visit a boat to see the
issues but that was a cruise ship cruise
ship I mean yes it was it was it was
docked it wasn't uh it wasn't actually
yeah yeah
um I guess you'll arrange uh I should go
on one right you feel absolutely very
important it's important okay
um I need to come along also just for uh
yeah
salmon on the cruise was was a problem
because even if you're adult and you're
having it you're dumping double wrapping
it and they're cooking it
um you need it to be cooked by a Jewish
person and that's probably not happening
so that that was the answer to the
salmon or any fish on the cruise
um and that article on cruises we cover
a number of issues uh that I think are
important in person trying wanting to go
on a cruise should should take a look at
that
um
there are Shabbos issues there at sneeze
issues
um modesty issues there are um kosher
and non-kosher issues like if most of
the crews boats are are both and I mean
a small percentage of them are just
comfortable keeping
if keeping koshers let's say you have a
boat with 3 000 people you have 300 of
them are keeping kosher so they don't
give you they'll say there are eight
Kitchens on them so they don't give you
a whole kitchen that would be nice and
the kitchens are small right they give
you like uh like uh like the size of
this this area right to prepare all your
food for those 300 people and this
kosher a non-kosher right next to each
other
um I've spoken to a number of of uh of
who have been on boats as as uh as you
know supervising and they say you have
to be very careful that
then they say they're not going again
you know it's very it's you know you
have to know who who's giving the half
share is it is it uh do they have enough
to take care of the issues it's it's a
very difficult uh certification okay
um
automatic toilets David wants to know
about unless I'm using those on hotels
also on hotels those are those are an
issue a problem
um uh the good news is that usually in
the rooms they're not yet up to that but
some hotels do have that do happen
in the rooms you have a real problem
because the way around that usually is
that there's a little button that you
can press but that's also uh um
electronic sometimes there's a button
that that you that you have to actually
depress you have to push it in and it's
actually a plunger it's going manually
but most of the ones the bypass of the
electronic is is a uh is a is a little
electronic so if that's in your room
you're going to have a problem we don't
recommend that should be like the first
question that you ask probably at the
hotel
we have noticed that sometimes
um
um accessible rooms are handicapped
accessible rooms don't even the rest of
the hotel will have
the the automatic ones the ones in
accessible rooms will not have those
they'll have manual not because they
couldn't just because they have to buy a
different type of system
um and then by manual so if that room is
available you know then you can ask the
hotel that's available it's like the
emergency room the room yeah right right
okay so that's sometimes in the hotel
lobbies they have these electronic
toilets and stuff and there is a way of
of dealing with it uh covering the eye
we have it in the in the article if you
take a look at that you can you can see
how to deal with that but let's move on
a little bit to to Airlines rather by
because
time is running short the question that
we asked if we had asked before was are
there
is there a list of Caterers on Airlines
and the answer is that yes Starkey has a
list in its Airline article
um
relatively recently it was updated but
it changes so much at the time of
printing it was accurate but the
airlines are always looking for a better
deal they're changing the the Caterers
themselves change certifications it's
very difficult to uh to keep to keep up
with it
um
and uh it it you know we get calls like
that a lot you know can you tell me
about the uh the certification on a
particular it's like a particular flight
um let me give you an example of things
that we have looked into
just I think certain things kind of stay
the same like the New York right out of
New York right
the flight's leaving from Israel
right okay so so we have like some of
the the interesting ones people ask us
about Turkish Airlines they're going
they're flying to Israel popular these
days it is popular because it's cheaper
than the other airlines yeah because we
all love turkey so much right we're not
Starke is not necessarily recommending
that you fly Turkish but but we do get
the question and uh and the the meals
come with the okay symbol and they're
that those are fine there's a legitimate
uh so it's it's fine no problem the
Lufthansa meals are coming
yeah so are so hard meals are under
Rabbi hovland and that is acceptable
um hello people people a lot of people
fly Halal to Israel and
um
and um the way it all works there is a
certain level of kosher
to all their food standard understanding
in Israel it's under the rabbi of the
Ben gurin airport in uh Toronto it's
under the Canada Hampshire in the United
States it's under another certification
so therefore all of their dishes that
they use circulate between the different
ports of calls different airports and
since they're all under certification
wherever they they load up the food
that is that they they rely on the
certain things you're talking about real
dishes I'm talking about real dishes if
you go on that level you don't order a
special kosher if you're going alone you
don't know the especially if you travel
on LL you probably get the real China
but when I travel yeah I think I usually
get like disposable
don't know I think it's been so long
since I've traveled
but they they do use they they use
plates and and serving utensils and all
these things okay right so those travel
among all of their their four or five uh
certifying uh uh agencies so there is a
level of kosher that is even if you
don't order anything kosher on LL
however we do recommend especially only
in business and first class only a
business first class they have China yes
but they do have things that they cook
on and things that they serve on and
things that they you know that that is
uh okay you know they have uh yeah so
um there is also most people we
recommend they should order special
kosher on on LL because uh most of the
standards that people who are calling us
would be higher than the regular
standard of the LL so uh they order glad
kosher
okay but but I've done that I've called
and ordered God kosher and they tell me
yes kosher yes it's in the system and
then they don't they don't it doesn't
come
um or if you order online if you can put
in your meals online on LL so the way we
finally figured out the LL system the LL
system is like this if you're going from
the U.S to Tel Aviv you order with what
they call Regal meals Regal meals that's
the name of the brand yeah that's the
way it looks to the to the agent it
looks in their system it says the
schedule that's the special kosher
traditional meals right and then from
Tel Aviv to the U.S you order a strictly
kosher Glock so those are the choices if
you're doing it online you can actually
do it yourself or if you're talking to
the agent that's what you should tell
them to uh to order
um but again but a lot of the uh a lot
of the flights that go through Europe
like we mentioned before right they
change they uh it is difficult to keep
up with it one thing I will mention is I
once flew from from Washington to Europe
and they had
um
they had an OU meal Dairy but it wasn't
uh Hall of Israel it was regular regular
Hollow Stone which is no problem there
the airplane can serve whatever they
feel like they're not obligated to serve
me so but since it was from Washington
not from New York it's all Hall of
Israel as far as I know but since it was
from a you know less I guess jewishly
traveled airport they didn't have so
many requests as well so you should be
aware of that as well it can either be
Harvest though
okay
um
let's go back to some of the questions
because we want to uh service our
listeners
um shashana says please address reusing
the oven okay using the oven I don't
think she means on the aerial plane but
on the on the in the hotel right okay so
you would be the same thing you should
if it's probably going to be clean if
not you can clean it readily and then uh
you should cash it turn it on for 40
minutes on high and then it will be
captured and then you can use the oven
that's no problem
um
everybody can we tell people how to see
The Archives of these classes no no we
didn't so let's mentioned all these
classes are recorded and archived at our
various sites
kosherclasses.org but that's all we have
P3 I think it's only the audio no no the
video is there too really yeah and also
on our Vimeo Channel if you go to Vimeo
or YouTube and search for Star kosher
you'll get our our Channel and see all
our you can see all our greatest hits
yep you can see that we did have a few
years ago also a uh a webinar with Mr
Steve seichel who is well traveled a
world traveler
um he does over a hundred thousand miles
a year within the uh for the star k and
president's class or something like that
right
and so he he discussed from a practical
perspective one of the different things
you need to do when you're making uh
making flights and hotels and things
like that so you can you can get that on
our website as well
um
okay so Jeff wants to get back to the
soft pretzels is there a problem to
either soft pretzel while traveling if
you know the company that made the
principle has a replica for example J J
soft pretzels served at a baseball game
I think that the problem with that is
but sometimes the not all J J soft
pretzels are Kosher as far as I know
because some of them might have cheese
in them and things like that
um so again it's it's an equipment
problem so when you're you're heating up
that pretzel
in the pretzel heater upper machine
whatever they call it
um it might have been used for these
non-kosher pretzels so I think that's
kind of problematic
okay so you don't recommend it okay I
would not yeah I would agree with that
um camping question can one use the fire
pit of the campground
for cooking that's a great question
or they'll be the same question when you
go to a park and they have those grills
that are there right
um
yeah but the grill you put you put the
food right on top of the grill right
that would be certainly a problem
taking the grill off not using their
grill out okay and then let's say
putting your own theoretically your own
Grill in there if you get one that fits
it's a good question it's a good
question the fire pit if everything is
burnt up
it's completely Ash and there isn't any
pieces of food there that should be okay
should be okay
but um
when I would like to think about that
some more so if you if you want to email
us that question we could look into it
some more our email address is info at
star-k.org info at
star-k.org our phone is 410-484-4110
Josh says often on airlines they will
serve some of the food separate from the
sealed package I want you to be aware
that these may not be certified very
good point that sometimes the food will
come in in the patterns
[Music]
that kind of thing
right they will serve you they don't
realize that you you're in kosher to
come down they give you a roll or other
food that's not that's not Kosher or
that if you're on a long flight they may
give you uh
um snack a dairy meal a meat meal and
then give you a dairy meal and you have
to be aware that the time difference you
know beware that you're waiting your
your amount of proper amount of time six
hours right so that the time differences
in travel don't count up too no six
hours right in between you have to be
careful what do you mean it's the next
day that's the raffle you have to be
careful you can't assume that it's
necessarily six hours later it depends
how long the flight is
um
uh one thing that that that
we mentioned in the article is that
escalators
escalators are not a problem for use on
Chavez we don't have a problem with them
they just continue to go and you're not
doing anything you're not changing
anything it's fine behind them says that
those are okay uh to use on on Shabbos
if you're in some hotels have escalators
to get the fancy ones in Scandinavia
they have those you know they go from
one four to the next or even you know
the one in Hunt Valley here the one
where they make some fasteners
but um uh I I we had we had an email
from uh are you gonna get into elevators
or
um
really that's a whole new topic but the
escalators
um
there are escalators now he says that
that only start when when you're on them
he said he noticed it at the airport in
Israel that or they're moving extremely
slow and then when you step on them they
know that you're on them and it starts
going faster or it's completely stopped
and he sent me an email showing me that
in in Dulles Airport the Washington
Airport they actually installed those
type of escalates they don't expect
anybody to be there on Shabbos but uh
the countries that that's the next
problem you know coming to uh
to to to hotels
um
and uh that that's something you need to
be be aware of okay is there anything
else that we didn't cover everybody
because we've been at it for quite a
while if you have any last minute
questions thank you for all your
comments if anybody has any last-minute
issues we will
it's good to point down I think most
people know this already that when you
travel at least in the United States
North America that there's a lot of
kosher food available
packaged kosher food
I mean when I travel for the star k i
don't usually bring food along within
North America because there's just so
much available that you can get you can
get you can get it there where you are
right right
um you know gone are the days we have to
bring a whole cooler full of food
necessarily
I also want to mention Rabbi Heber has
an article about traveling on Fridays or
on aravyantive how you deal with those
issues that are challenges specifically
people get stuck on how to try to avoid
getting stuck one idea is don't take the
last flight out of the day on Friday
obviously use your common sense right
leave enough time or behind them in says
that you should leave double time let's
say it takes a
three hours to get to New York from here
yeah you should leave at least six hours
of time to allow for anything that is I
think especially in the summer in the
summer time when people are traveling
and the traffic is right you never know
right yeah someone's talking about ice
cream if you want to address that ice
cream or serve serve Yogi dishes okay
we'll have to get that in another
webinar because that's a whole new uh a
whole nother topic okay the fire pit
coffee
I lost it
they're obliers and layers of old food
that are attached to the fire pit
there are odors that put me at the
cooking area
well the odors are not going to be a
problem but the if there are if there is
food there that is uh that is actually I
don't know exactly when you use the fire
pit don't you usually put something
you're not putting it directly in the on
the ground over there well I guess you
have to hold it over it or lay it on the
stick you put your front footer on the
stick and you put it you're saying it's
cooking from the this belief in the dirt
in the ashes that are there
you mean you don't put the food you
don't put your oven in there unless
you're going to cook potatoes like
enough that's an old candy trigger you
take a potato you stick it in the coals
and then it let it sit there and it gets
closer so you're only putting it on on
the Fire
you're not putting it down onto them
it's an interesting question as I
mentioned before we'll have to think
about that one some more give us some
homework
Josh says what happens when you get
stuck on the highway where I play on
Shabbos what do you do when you're stuck
on a highway or flying on Travis okay
that's all uh that's those are very good
questions and um
you should see the article definitely
take a look at that
um okay Robert buyer we want to uh thank
everyone for joining with us today
um I hope that we covered topics that
were interesting to you uh let me see
that we can see where people joined us
from here let me take a look at that I
always like to do that
uh
uh but how do I do that
please bear with us
one second I have to they're giving
their locations if anyone has come down
to Baltimore on your travels you'll feel
free
stop by
Mindy says anything the fire pit would
be charred in an edible yes that would
make it okay even if it touches I just
don't have so much familiarity with what
what what this what the not from the
camping uh camping experience no I'm not
from the Boy Scouts yeah
um well let me just do this so we can
take a look and see how many Buzz what's
that too many bugs
let me take a look over here everybody
if I do like this
okay this tells us
um that we have mostly people from New
York or east coast rather can't see New
York but
um we have a couple in in the midwest we
have some from California
we have a couple in Europe
and a couple nerds to throw
and it looks like it might be it must be
interesting stronger that there's a
straw it would be like Bahrain or
something it could be because it's like
General Middle East area you know right
it could be United Arab Emirates we have
Alba she's in Spain that's our she's she
comes right the help is with us okay
from Spain and
um
from all over the world I want to thank
everyone for for uh for joining us these
webinars are held the last Wednesday of
every month
at 12 noon
um if you want to be alerted what the
topic is
um or if there's any change which is
sometimes send us an email at info
star-k.org and we will add you to the
list or if you gave your email address
