Is constantly working on yourself a form of self-rejection? For many people it is because it's coming from a place of inadequacy. I'm not enough. And usually that message was internalized during childhood. They had a parent who was hypercritical. They start to think of God or they think of life itself as being judgemental and hypercritical. And I'm never enough and I have to work harder in order to prove myself. And if that's the premise, then yeah, working on yourself is a form of self-rejection. Which interestingly enough, you'll never be able to fulfill. It's an endless loop of constantly feeling inadequate, no matter what level you reach. And that reveals the key to working on yourself in a healthy way, which is when you're working on yourself from a healthy premise of being essentially good and worthy in the eyes of your maker, then you do feel satisfaction and fulfillment when you accomplish things. It is enough and you do feel good about what you've accomplished. But then what happens is success breeds more success. And not that you don't feel you've already accomplished, but if I could accomplish this, I could accomplish even more. It's actually a good feeling, an exciting feeling of compounding your results, of rolling it over and making more and more and more. But that's how you know it's coming from a healthy place. You're actually able to feel satisfied and fulfilled from it.
