Understanding this concept would change addiction treatment forever. The factor that actually makes a difference in someone's life actually doesn't cost any money. A spiritual awakening doesn't cost any money. A relationship with a higher power doesn't cost any money. And so, it's a little bit unnerving that you see sometimes on a societal scale when we identify addiction as a societal problem, the response is to throw money at it. Or even on a more micro scale, a family has a loved one who's an addict and they're just trying to figure out where to send them for treatment and if they can just afford the cost of treatment, then they feel like that's the solution. And the reality is, I've seen people completely turn around and change their lives while they're still living on the streets. I've seen people get sober who are still living in a crack house because that's where they live. I think if we as a society want to show that we actually care, what we can do beyond allocating resources is collectively to start to value more how much spirituality is a vital component of human wellness. If you're a parent, if you're a teacher, if you're a leader of a community, the way that we can support not just addicts but all people is in humbly, unassumingly sharing our faith and giving people a language of faith so that they can form their own personal relationship with their creator.
