What's a sukkah and why do we build it? If you drive through a Jewish neighborhood during a certain 8-day period in the autumn season and you see a bunch of makeshift little huts on people's front lawn or on the front porch or sometimes on a balcony, sometimes you'll even see it like in an alleyway and you wonder what's going on here, that's actually the fulfillment of a biblical commandment. It says it explicitly in the book of Leviticus chapter 23 verse 42 that we relive or we commemorate of the Exodus from Egypt by living in these huts for a week. But there's a deeper message as well and that is we become very attached to things that we feel are permanent and it's very important to be reminded that nothing is really permanent and that our only protection and our only safety comes from divine grace. So for this one week, we leave our houses, which are permanent structures, which are stable, strong structures, and we go out into these flimsy little ramshackle huts, which are temporary structures, and we try to really internalize this message that nothing of this world is permanent and that we depend at all times on God's favors for everything.
