the true meaning of Yom Kippur. Yom Kippur means the Day of Atonement, and atonement doesn't exactly work the way that most people think it does. Atonement is actually one of those words that the English language happens to get perfectly right. The word atonement is at-one-ment. Atonement occurs when we become one with our maker. What does that mean to become one with him? It means to surrender. It means to cease to pursue our own separate desires and to align ourselves with his desire. Now, it's very important to understand that there are layers, so to speak, to the human persona. For instance, I have my behaviors, which are an outer expression of myself, but then I have my emotions, which are more inward. And then even deeper than my emotions, I have my intellect. And then loftier than that, I have my ideals, my beliefs. These are all layers of the human being. Any one of these layers can unfortunately drift away from mission and become misaligned with God's will for us. In other words, I can behave in a way that is not what God wants. I can even feel things that are not what God wants me to feel, or I can think in ways that are not the way that God wants a healthy human brain to think. And all of these misalignments need to be corrected. Yet, there is the core of the soul, the essence of the soul, that is inherently at one with God at all times, and in fact, remains at one with God even at the very moment that the other layers and levels of the person are in rebellion against God. The way that atonement works on the Day of Atonement is that that essence, which was always one with God, becomes revealed, and all of the other layers and levels are forced to become realigned with it. So, atonement actually is discovering that part of you that never strayed, that never left, and then taking all the parts of you that did stray and bringing them back into alignment with that core.
