Text-Based Tanya—Week #62

so uh weekly text-based Tanya we're up to chapter 37 and before we started recording we went through a whole big discussion just confirming that we did finish chapter 36 last week um chapter 35 was the Comfort to the main who was worried about the fact that all he could ever focus on is behavioral Perfection and he would always be left with an unresolved internal conflict who said don't worry about it that's really what it's all about anyways it's about your behaviors because that's the only way to ultimately become truly one with Hashem the soul interestingly enough somewhat counter-intuitively but the soul with all of its subjective sensitivity to Hashem never becomes one with Hashem it's in a in a relationship where there's subject object an observer and The observed with all of its great love of God but it's it's not one with God the body with its complete uh lack of sensitivity actually can surrender to God and become a vehicle and an extension of the Divine will so ultimately it's all about action that was chapter 35. chapter 36 we continued and explained why it is that Hashem wants the deity of the titanium The Dwelling Place in the lower Realms why Hashem wants ultimately that the physical world should be holier than the highest heavens we spoke a little bit about the idea of his will that has to do with Will and desire which transcends uh rationale and ultimately it's about that Paradox of having the darkest place the place of the greatest concealment to become the greatest the place of the greatest Revelation and that that's why the the the the physical action Mitzvahs are so important because they take place here in the physical world and that's that's what Hashem desires most of all okay so that that's where we got up to and we said when Michelle comes that that is going to become ultimately revealed that the the physical world is the place of the greatest Godly Revelation okay so this brings up this brings us up to chapter 37. um when I was a young man a Yeshiva student the first chapter of Tanya that I actually connected with in a deep way see I'd studied Tanya and everyone told me it was great which only made me not like it because if you ever tell me that something is great and that everybody loves it then it makes it hard for me to like it so I I didn't I didn't dislike Tanya but I I had a hard time liking it and then I remember there was one time we I guess it was the during the Tanya so it was like this time of year exactly because we're in chapter 37 in time you hit us right now so I I learned chapter 37 and it clicked for me and I was like this is the coolest thing in the world and that's when I fell in love with Tanya because of this chapter so this this was my favorite chapter of Tanya for many years and in some ways it still is my favorite chapter because it was the chapter that turned me on to the rest of the book but we're continuing this discussion and the importance of the physical world the importance of physical actions within the physical world specifically this I guess the re this is and I guess this is the reason why I loved this chapter so much is because it breaks down the mechanics of this process in other words we know already that Hashem wants to Dwelling Place in the lower Realms we even know that somehow our physical action Mitzvahs are related to that but we don't really understand the exact mechanics of it in chapter 37 he breaks it down and explains how our physical actions actually transform the world into a place of Godly Revelation so that's basically what chapter 37 is okay make sense okay in chapter 37 vihine tacos is amazing this ultimate perfected state that we have alluded to earlier which will take place in the times in the times of mashiach and even more so in the later phase of resurrection of the Dead because when Sheikh comes it won't be different the natural order will not be different right away but the resurrection of the Dead is obviously a major change in the in the natural order so this ultimate Perfection called the Messianic era and the resurrection of the Dead another way to describe it is a revelation of the infinite light in the physical world both of those phenomena the world peace that will occur in the times of mashiach and the resurrection of the Dead that will occur a little bit after that um both of those are just different ways of describing the revelation of the infinite light in the physical world okay but here's here's the rest of the sentence let me finish the sentence these conditions are dependent upon they are dependent upon but my say no our actions vaveda say no our service Cosman meshachalas throughout the entire duration of of Exile okay you got the first sentence of the chapter this revelation of the infinite that will take place in the physical world and can be described both as the Messianic era as well as the era of the Resurrection that is dependent upon our actions and service of Hashem okay it's not like it just comes out of nowhere it's not just it materializes spontaneously there is a cause and there is an effect and I want to make this very clear what I mean by there's a cause and effect you know even people who think about the ultimate reward as being mashiach you could I'm not going to get into a whole side discussion about this but the shalakadish actually explains that there's two different ways of viewing reward there's intrinsic reward and there's an artificial reward there's a reward that's a segula and a reward that is cause and effect so a reward that the scula is basically there's no inherent uh connection between the the reward and that which is being rewarded okay class if everybody colors in their coloring books and finishes we'll all give you all a piece of candy okay drawing in your coloring books doesn't generate a piece of candy it's an arbitrary artificial reward that the teacher has superimposed into the situation so even if you look at the ultimate reward for everything as mashiach you still could think of it as this arbitrary artificial situation that sort of just comes at the end of our service uh throughout the centuries in the Millennia but the altareb is saying no he's making it very clear it's not just something that happens after we do all of our service of Hashem it is the ultimate result of what we do to serve Hashem so everything that we do during the exile ultimately results in produces and generates the condition called uh the days of mashiach and the resurrection of the Dead okay all right yeah yeah yeah what's going on now with artificial intelligence it's just a quick one they're like resurrecting animals would you say that a touch I'm hiding in nature yeah people are always asking me these questions nowadays I don't know yeah but look just the general thing all the different uh crazy stuff that's happening in the world today I mean crazy in a good way of saying the the stuff that used to be sci-fi that's now happening for real yeah I mean I guess you could say that's a that's a way of this Revelation happening in a natural way yeah it's all it's all part of the the world getting closer to meshiach no question about it okay but the the the what he's saying is here it's not just something that happens there is a cause there's something that makes this happen now he explains this is very important very important just focus on this concept that which causes the reward of the Mitzvah Mitzvah Atma is the Mitzvah itself you follow what that means that which causes have no relationship with one another but if you're if you're mature if you're an adult mommy doesn't have to tell you to clean the room you look at your room you clean your room and the reward for cleaning your room is clean room you got it okay okay no it's not no okay all right you understand do you understand that mitzers have an actual effect okay probably not um here's the deal the way that a lot of people think about Mitzvahs is that it's like this menu that Hashem prints up and then he makes like instead of like I guess prices he makes like I don't know like a little reward chart you do them this Mitzvah and you get this many stars and this many raffle tickets and then the end you go and you buy like a plastic spider ring if with 20 raffle tickets you guys know what I'm talking about you know what I'm talking about anyone else here know how to play skee ball you know what I'm talking about and sometimes not that I try to but as soon as you pull those raffle tickets and the extra will come out you know what I'm talking about okay so a lot of people think about myths was like that that's not what it is that's not what it is that's not what it is that's not what it is actually have intrinsic value they actually accomplish something what do they accomplished they accomplish the revelation of the infinite in the physical world okay so it's very important for us to get this through our heads that it's not that Mitzvahs are rewarded by some point system it's that Mitzvahs themselves accomplish something specifically what do they accomplish they accomplish the revelation of the infinite within the physical world the sum total of that the culmination of that the Tipping Point the critical mass of that is the widespread revelation of the infinite in the physical world known as mashiach okay but understand please the mechanics of this process are based on the idea that the Mitzvah itself is doing something not just you're compensated for your Mitzvah the Mitzvah itself causes something to happen namely the revelation of the infinite within the physical world okay fine that in doing you draw down a revelation of the infinite light from above to below to be invested within the physical world into something that had up until then been under the Dominion of klipasana and was getting its nurture was getting its life force from that state called clipasnaga now please impress me please what chapter what chapter go back what when when did we learn about clipas Niger when did we learn about clippersnaiga I mean the first time we mentioned it was in chapter one but that's not where we're learning what Cooper Schneider was we just mentioned it we just mentioned it where did we learn what it really was no it wasn't I like that you guessed I like and drinking eating and drinking kosher food it's a totally neutral activity it depends how you do it right yeah exactly you do it mindfully and then you actually use the energy to do some type of a mitzvah so that's what we're talking about why wasn't that my fair I don't know why wasn't that my favorite chapter no but if this is what anyways so there was something that was under the Dominion of cleopas Naga up until this point yeah um and this this is basically all the pure and permissible things through which physical Mitzvahs are done going for instance what do I mean pure and permissible pure pure doesn't mean like chemically pure pure means pure means um it means it's permissible I mean it's pretty much synonymous with with what it says permissible pure and permissible meaning stuff that's stuff that is capable of being used for Mitzvah not that it has yet been used from it but it could be could it gives an example cloth the parchment of the philan and the mezuzah and the safety elevating the spiritual status of this object it does not cease to be a physical object it's not like it has to dematerialize in order to become holy it remains physical it remains present in the world and yet it's spiritual status is upgraded now I'm going to just sort of telegraph to you where this chapter is heading but imagine this as a microcosm it is a microcosm of a universal process where ultimately the entirety of all physicality piece by piece would be elevated into Holiness while remaining in its physical state then what would you essentially have at the end of that process you'd have an entirely holy world that is still physical okay would you have that is synonymous with mashiach okay is this what gun Aiden was uh ganaden was similar to this in that it was a holy place on the physical Earth yes yes this is actually better than gun Aiden because gun Aiden was created that way by Hashem and this is being created by us yes okay sorry then what happens to the uh irresum what happens the iridimo Clipper okay that's not a bad question at all because we did say there's nothing you can do with it so what what okay so that stuff uh in the end Hashem takes care of it gets will take care of the irredeemable stuff okay but um yeah I mean that's there's thousands of examples like that okay so he says yeah yeah here we are the acts of and now shemaker now he's taking this neutral object spiritually neutral object and he's using it to do hashem's Mitzvah to do hashem's will the Vitality the energy in that thing in that object that is using Ayla goes up meaning it it it graduates to a higher spiritual rank and actually becomes subsumed within the infinite which is the will of Hashem which is invested within the physical object when it's being used to do the Mitzvah says because there is no concealment of the Divine face so to speak on the level of hashem's will let me just say that in plain English that are always concealments even when Hashem wants something but he wants something in order to get something else it's a stepping stone so it's not his deepest deepest desire unless we're talking about one there's one concept which is hashem's deepest desire meaning we need to say he doesn't want it for a utilitarian purpose to get closer to something else he wants it and just because well why do you want it just because that's the deepest desire and what is the thing Hashem wants just because the mitzvahs so when you use something see everything exists because Hashem wants it to exist and if Hashem didn't want it to exist it wouldn't exist but that's Hester upon him that's concealment because he wants it to exist for some other purpose I mean listen even evil exists because Hashem wants it to exist but you think it's hashem's deepest desire it's not his deepest desire it exists for other purposes like for instance to allow for free choice and all that kind of stuff but deepest desire so when you can take something in the physical world it's right now existing in a state where it exists as an expression of hashem's more external desire and now use it for his deepest desire meaning to say for a Mitzvah now you've taken that thing and even while it remains in the physical state you have elevated its definition its identity from something that exists because of some other purpose to something that exists for the purpose okay McCain now we're going to expand this so we said we can go around and appropriating objects for the service of Hashem and we Elevate them from mundane to Holy and similarly McCain is the energy that's in the limbs of the body the animal Soul energy that's in the limbs of the body that you use in order to do the mitzvah who mislavish gam Kane Busia Zoo that energy that physical energy is also invested in the performance of the mitzvah right when you do a Mitzvah you have to expend energy do you expend energy doing a Mitzvah yeah okay fine so what happens to that energy now that it's being attached to the performance of hashem's deepest innermost will so that energy is alsoila is elevated from Clipper because your physical energy is what level how how would you define the spiritual uh uh level of your animal Soul's energy yeah yeah that's right but now you use that energy of your animal soul to do a Mitzvah and it gets elevated hamitzvah gets elevated and absorbed into the Holiness of the myth which again the Mitzvah is hashem's Will his innermost will Baltimore now becomes completely nullified to the infinite light and he mentioned something Nifty here regard mitzvah's talmouth even one of through the intermediary of your animal Soul which is invested in those limbs yeah what about expanding spiritual energy not just physical energy I don't need to expense spiritual energy spiritual energy is already holy do you understand the point here you can't I don't need that when I go to a currency exchange and ask them could you change me uh American currency for American currency with the banking situation okay you outsmarted me maybe maybe I would okay I don't need to switch American currency for American currency spiritual energy is already spiritual the whole you can't yeah yeah you probably could yeah but the point here is this radical categorical elevation where something was in the domain of clippersnaiga which is Clipper and now it's in the realm of kadusha so what is that that's the physical and forget about spirituality the physical energy calories literally calories that you're burning in order to move your muscles and to do that Mitzvah that's the point that now he missed gets transformed from bad to good and subsumed within Holiness through your your animal Soul Your enlivening Soul which was grown from the food you ate and then that internships you invest that energy into the words of Toyota you're saying or into the Mitzvah that you're doing I share Chinese like we keep saying and that Mitzvah is hashem's actual deepest desire without any concealment and now that energy that physical energy that you got from that physical food is becoming absorbed within hashem's deepest desire s and so now the power of your of your enlivening souls being elevated through that so through this foreign now he speaks about it on the the universal level the macrocasm so through this process that we've just described right we described that you're doing a Mitzvah so your animal Soul's energy is being used up well first of all we said the object that you're using the object that you're using most Mitzvahs requires some type of an object so the object that you're using is being elevated from clippersnaga to kadusha then the energy that your body is expending in order to do the movements the Motions that are required for the Mitzvah that is being elevated from clevis and then don't forget where did you even get that energy from you consumed resources which were clippersnaiga and they they in turn are also being elevated into kadusha so it says through this process Tyler gamkin clawless the general clip of snowga in the world on a universal level is being elevated in other words the the the the energy of this physical world is being elevated through that process Kasha Cole and Hashem of enough when every Jewish Soul which there are 600 000 General Souls which have offshoots when each one of the Jewish Souls does all of the 613 Commandments say now here's your question who has a Prohibition yeah here's the prohibitions the 365 prohibitions that is to separate the 365 uh blood vessels um to separate to make sure that uh then the the energy doesn't go where it shouldn't go is to keep the energy from being misappropriated to the irredeemable Clippers as we know that all the the 365 biblical prohibitions as well as the rabbinical offshoots a role of that category of irredeemable clipper so if God forbid your physical energy would be expanded toward that direction that would be an irredeemable loss vashov and furthermore also there's another residual effect that it being involved in these prohibitions taints the soul and makes it sort of holds it down so it can't Elevate because these eredimal Clippers cannot be worked with really the only thing can be done is just to get rid of them commercial liquor says Hashem says when the time will come at the end of this whole process Hashem says I I not you guys don't touch it don't touch it I will get rid of that stuff that's irredeemable but if we get involved in that stuff so then it uh I don't want to say too explicitly but it cause it causes some have a Dwelling Place in the physical world like we said before and your limbs become like a chariot to Hashem just like we're saying before like the Patriarchs remember that mentioned how the Patriarchs uh were chariots to hashem's will the only difference is they did it constantly without any without any uh without any lapse um here's the punchline so then after the physical energy of the entire Jewish people becomes one big Chariot to hashem's holiness than the whole physical world it will will follow in kind Le which is right now clippersnaga Tates it'll leave its impure sick State and it'll become elevated into Holiness and it it will become a vehicle to Hashem and it will reveal hashem's glory and what will happen for All Flesh will see God will appear to the whole world in the the glory of his might and the the glory of Hashem will fill the whole world the Jewish people will see Hashem eye to eye just like it was at the Revelation at Sinai like we said before the revelation of Sina you've been shown to know shown you've been able to empirically observe that there is nothing but God and through this great revelation is that are automatically wipe out all of the irredeemable Clipper Hayes because the irredeemable Clipper gets its remember it has no life force of its own it's completely vampiristic and it gets it it gets its life force not directly from kadusha because it can't touch kadusha but in through the intermediary of clippersnaga but all the Clippers Niger will be elevated into Holiness so then I'm in the middle of the Sciences please please please please well now I'm putting on you what was I saying why will not now I'm going to make you say why will exclusive automatically disappear why what will happen so explain how that will topple the whole system there will be no more evil in the world why what will happen so follow what I was saying before guys when we're on a roll in the middle of a sentence don't don't okay okay there is no force so that will automatically disappear right so you use all the the clip ass in the proper way it gets elevated into gdusha and now the shuttle script is demeus has no more access to any life force and it just automatically disappears okay so what we're describing here is a process that you can observe in microcosm through every individual Jew doing every individual Mitzvah that's the process in microcosm but then there's the macrocosm the aggregate some total culminating effect which is the transformation of the entirety of the physical world from spiritual neutrality to holiness and then not only the neutrality becomes holy but then the irredeemable stuff disappears so then what are you left with let's make sure we get this because you can use buzzwords like mashiach and not know what it means it is Ultimate revelation of what and where and how and what hashem's Glory where here in the physical world how by us doing Mitzvahs that's the mechanics of it through our actions specifically physical actions that's right that expand physical energy of the body that's right let me see if we're in a good pausing place I want to just continue a few more lines here to get to a better pausing place so it comes out that whole ultimate goal of the world when mashiach comes and after the resurrection that whole ultimate goal sugar it's another way to describe that is the revelation of God's glory another way to describe it is the removal of the negativity from the world that whole thing and he's reiterating a statement he made at the very beginning of the chapter so it should be somewhat familiar but now you should understand what it means because we've described it that that condition that ultimate goal of the world totally is dependent it depends on what the state of the world depends on what it depends on the the godliness is drawn down to the the animal soul of all Jewish people in their bodies doing physical mitzvahsis and also there's a flip side of the coin just to make sure that we don't do any of the prohibitions that would cause a misappropriation of the energy so the positive Commandments cause the energy to be channeled and elevated appropriately from neutral to Holy and refraining from the prohibitions make sure that we don't allow the energy to be mischanneled downward where it ought not go Ki claws [Music] you want to know that you possess is potentially a tool to do a mitzvah okay the now these things on their own are not holy but through the usage of them become holy so what we're saying is there's a certain call it
