all right welcome back weekly Tanya text
based inside every single word of the
Holy text of Tanya we started over a
year ago we're continuing we are in the
middle of chapter
27. interesting we've been spending a
few weeks on chapter 27.
I think this is the third maybe even the
fourth week of chapter 20 so I'm not
sure
really yeah yeah yeah but there's a lot
of good stuff in chapter 27 very often
I'll just tell you something when people
ask me to give a one-off time this year
for people who never study Tanya and
they say give them one chapter as like
their
Taste of Tanya
I think ninety percent of the time I do
chapter 27.
yeah I just feel like chapter 27 is like
a little microcosm of Tanya there's so
much in there
so many ideas
there's emotional well-being and there's
the struggle of the vanity and the
inherent value of the struggle and so
many of the main themes of Tanya and our
power our uh our leverage that we have
beyond our own personal
struggle and how we affect the world for
the good so many great Concepts okay
so just to review in chapter 27 we've
been speaking about
uh
cherishing the fact that Hashem placed
us in a situation where we have to
struggle to be good people
he gave us internal resistance otherwise
known as an animal cell
and uh
the the need to overcome that is not a
bug it's a feature
there is value in the struggle
we spoke about the fact that every time
we overcome that struggle it weakens the
forces of negativity in the universe
we spoke about the fact that
um Hashem gets a unique Delight from our
struggle remember the metaphor of the
one chip challenge
yes the Pocky chips the one chip Jones
thank you somebody else
the habanero yeah yeah remember I told
you I ate the ghost pepper chips yes but
by the way the one chip challenge is not
ghost pepper it is Carolina Reaper
pepper which is even hotter it's from
the Carolinas what no I'm not sure I
think yeah anyways
um
so sometimes Hashem is in the mood for
some sweet yummy chocolates and that's
called The Sweet yummy service that the
perfectly righteous are able to muster
by by Dent of their completely pure
uh
purified animal Soul which has become
for all intents and purposes a second
Godly Soul so they have no struggle and
their service of Hashem is delightful to
Hashem like like sweetness but then
Hashem also gets pleasure from the spicy
treat of the pain and knee struggling
against
his unrefined animal assault
okay he gets more pleasure from that you
think it's got more pleasure okay I mean
we didn't say what she gets more
pleasure from we said he gets pleasure
from both but sure why not okay I mean
could you prove that no you couldn't
prove one oh maybe maybe there's more of
us than yeah yeah yeah okay it's
possible majority yeah okay that that is
a Torah concept we go after the majority
okay at any rate so
somebody asked a few weeks ago and I was
like just wait just wait just wait
if this thing is so powerful remember
what you said the ramifications of your
overcoming your internal struggle has
like a positive effect on the whole
universe if this is such a powerful
thing could we generalize this technique
and start to apply it even in areas that
don't necessarily inherently require a
struggle in other words I understand if
something is forbidden according to
Torah law then it requires a struggle
because I'm obligated to try to overcome
it but what about something that's not a
clear-cut black and white
Torah prohibition what if it's something
neutral
would I be able to get the same
bang for my buck so to speak
overcoming a struggle in something that
was optional and neutral
do you remember that question
I'm going to give you many examples
because that's the entire focus of today
but you understand the premise
yeah that was your question remember
from like you were sitting over there
okay that's remarkable when people move
seats
it was like two weeks ago and you're
sitting on the couch
okay so let's see
we are at the text of a light Aid we are
at the line in the text of the late and
furthermore
even when dealing with perfectly
permissible things okay so now we've
switched until now we were speaking
about the need to struggle
to overcome the urge
God forbid to transgress a Torah
prohibition
now we're not talking about prohibitions
we're talking about totally neutral
stuff stuff that you're allowed to do
you're allowed to do it
it's permissible
so furthermore Village means like I'll
tell you even more a bigger a bigger
novelty
that even when it comes to things that
are perfectly permissible
foreign
every little bit that a person can
sacrifice his inclination
and here's the second bombshell even for
a moment he says
means even for a brief fleeting moment
um
but he does so with deliberate intent of
subjugating the negative forces in his
left ventricle I'm not going to explain
that that's back back from chapter one
when we spoke about
how the animal soul is in the oxygenated
blood that's pumped from the left
ventricle if you want to find out more
about that go back to the recordings
chapter one
so even if for a moment
he is able to master his desire his
desire for a perfectly permissible thing
once he gives in he's not doing anything
wrong it's not a transgression but what
he does is he pushes it off having not
just he pushes it off because
you know uh he got busy he got
distracted he had something else to do
no he says here specifically having in
mind
that right now what I'm doing is I am
subjugating the forces of negativity by
mastering my own desires it happens to
be that this particular desire is a
permissible one so there's nothing wrong
with giving into it but the cool thing
is
exerting some self-control even over
this perfectly permissible desire will
have the same positive effect in the
universe as resisting
the desire for a transgression
yes that is a Biblical principle
sanctify yourself even in that which I'm
adding the word even even in that which
is permissible right act like a mensch
even when you're doing things that
you're allowed to do yeah very good
and now he gets into examples
let's look at an example good going for
example
he wants to eat
um
but he delays his meal for an hour or
even less
so he pushes off his meal he's ready to
eat
and he pushes off his meal for an hour
it's not because it's intermittent
fasting
remember he said he's doing it for an
intention he's doing it for a purpose he
has in mind
that he's doing this in order to
subjugate the forces of negativity by
locally subjugating his own desires
the Isaac
and instead he learns Torah during that
time
see that's part yeah that's part of it
because it's not just like oh uh I'm not
going to eat I want to eat right now but
instead I'm going to watch a movie well
that's not really self-mastery is it
self-mastery oh thank you thank you so
much
everybody
okay
um
self-mastery is I could be doing
something neutral permissible
totally acceptable there's nothing wrong
with it it's not a sin God forbid it's
fine it's not a Mitzvah either but it's
there's nothing wrong with it in fact
eventually I'm gonna do it I gotta eat
eventually gonna eat
but to exert some control over my
desires I'm going to eat an hour later
than I wanted to and during that time
I'm gonna I'm gonna I'm gonna study
Torah yeah so the reason that it's
similar to being able to stop yourself
from doing something bad because it's
like the prep work to stop yourself from
doing something bad it's like exercise
no no no that's a great question but the
answer is no you're saying oh maybe I'll
learn self-mastery
in cases where nothing really prohibits
at stake so even when I lose I when even
when I give in eventually I'm not
sinning and then eventually I'll work up
to no that's not what it's saying it's
saying something much more powerful than
that
it's saying that there's such value to
this
struggle
and the Dynamics of the struggle
and the cosmic ripple effect of the
struggle
that it will
that will work
even when your struggle isn't against
anything that's wrong to give in to
just delaying gratification alone
has value delaying gratification alone
has value even when that gratification
is a permissible form of gratification
even when that form of gratification is
inevitable meaning eventually you will
give in to it but just delaying it with
with intention yeah yeah very good has
power
the intention is like we said I'm
subjugating the forces of negativity in
the universe by locally controlling my
own
urges
another way to see that subjugating
negative forces of energy making the
world a better Holier godlier place for
everybody
doesn't that's the whole point that's
the whole point that doesn't again can I
give an example he just gave an example
right that's why I'm having an issue
well I guess it all comes to intent
deleting so that I can learn soda which
no no no no no he's not saying I'm gonna
eat so that I can learn to the contract
right right maybe I'll eat in order to
learn Torah instead of right you need
the strength yeah maybe I should go eat
and then learn
yeah but it's not that he's doing in
order to learn to the contrary maybe you
should eat first and then he'll be able
to learn better
he's going to explain actually let's
let's go inside because he explains this
let's let's look at the
let's look at the actual
archetypical example from our from our
tradition
says in the gamada
the fourth hour is the normal meal time
for normal people if you're talking
about a let's take a typical day or not
a typical day but an average day the
easiest day mathematically to work with
because as you know halachic hours are
not 60 Minute hours they're relative
hours they're seasonal hours
so imagine like it's the equinox and you
have sunrise at 6 a.m and sunset at 6
p.m so the fourth hour would be the
first hours at 6 a.m second hours at 7
A.M third hours at 8 A.M so the fourth
hour is 9 A.M so he doesn't eat until 9
A.M these people got up at dawn or
before even and they didn't eat until
nine that's normal people would eat at
nine
but the sixth hour the hour going into
noon meaning 11 a.m till 12 P.M Michael
talmire is the scholars
meal time that's what the gamada says
the regular people would eat between
nine and ten they would you know they
would break their fast we call break
fast and breakfast and
um the sages would not eat until a
couple hours later
analyzes this and he says
they would starve themselves obviously
Starve is probably a clumsy translation
even though that's the literal
translation but I don't think they're
starving it was an extra two hours okay
they would starve themselves for two
extra hours with this intention with
this how do you know they did it with
this intention maybe they were just busy
maybe they just didn't get around to it
maybe they were waiting for The Omelette
station to be set up
maybe okay
so he proves it basically he says
because after their meal they would
learn all day long we're talking about
the scholars who used to study all day
so don't tell me oh they would eat
breakfast later so they could learn more
Torah that's not true because they would
learn Toyota after eating breakfast as
well so it's not like oh I can only
learn until my meal and then after my
meal I can't learn anymore they would
learn before they ate they would learn
after they ate so this the same net
amount of minutes of Torah study is
going on
so eating later doesn't make more Torah
study quantitatively so then what was
the point of pushing off the meal time
it was entirely for this purpose of
exerting some degree of self-mastery
over something that's perfectly
permissible because you're allowed to
eat and in fact you must eat and in fact
eventually they did eat just two hours
later and in those two hours there's a
degree of self-mastery
that is happening
that you cannot achieve
if you just tend to the desire
immediately when it occurs now if you do
tend to the desire immediately win a
curse you're not doing a sin there's
nothing sinful here but if you have the
opportunity to make yourself more of a
mensch to make the world the nicer
Kinder gentler place just by exerting
some self-control why not seize that
opportunity and that's what we're
describing here
if you don't have if you have the intent
way back and you forget and then you
forgot why you were doing it
did like one of those you know you
remind me of by the way that's only a
question that a mother would ask
I remember I saw a meme I like Mommy
memes the I I almost get them yeah I
kind of get them like come vicariously I
get them one of my favorites was
instructions for making iced coffee
was
um get pregnant have a baby make coffee
forget you made coffee drink iced coffee
so you had an intention yesterday I'm
going to delay my breakfast two hours
for this for chapter 27 of Tanya
and then you end up delaying it for
three hours and not even remembering why
yeah okay what are you gonna say
in what way does it make the world a
better place why are you questioning
your axioms don't question okay what
the same way that last week it makes the
same way that last week did
so she's going to say well how did last
week work okay
all right fine it's a fair question it's
a fair question yeah
and did you see where that's for us
but she's asking how does the mystical
part of it work yeah on a societal level
it's clear that more self-control will
have benefits but you're asking that
mystical thing where we're saying that
it's not just helping you to become a
mensch it's actually making the world a
better place okay so remember what he
said last week he said that basically
every time you overcome your urges
what happens is it triggers a reciprocal
response your uh you're engaging with
your personal struggle down here
elicits a reciprocal response from on
high from Hashem who then brings down
the forces of negativity remember the
little metaphor we had from the prophet
evadja Obadiah
yeah he swats God swats It Down Like an
Eagle like this haughty eagle flying up
and then God swaps it swaps it down and
says
not so fast
mister I guess that's what he says at
any rate so there's this reciprocity set
up
it's called
an arousal From Below an arousal from
above there's a dynamic interplay
between us and Hashem so things that we
do become mirrored from on high
Therefore your little struggle little is
not so little after all because Hashem
then mirrors it
on the grand scale on the macro scale
and then it benefits the entire world
the bombshell news of this part of the
chapter that we're learning today is
that you don't have to wait for your
animal soul to be drawn to something
that's inappropriate to have this
opportunity
you can have this opportunity even when
you are desirous of something that's
completely permissible and in fact
something that you are going to
allow yourself to have eventually but
you're simply going to delay when you
give in to it and it will have this
impact on yourself and on the world
yeah okay so um I used to love
um Kirkland's potato chips
Kirkland potato chips Kirkland in
general is I just wanted so everyone
should know people laugh at Kirkland oh
Kirkland okay I know it's a brand it's
the Costco brand it's a very good brand
Kirkland quality control they test their
product against the leading a competitor
or the name brand and they make sure
that their quality is 150 percent that
means
one and a half times as good so Kirkland
is good stuff don't laugh at Kirkland
okay
every time I see this bag in the stores
so but some people say you're never
allowed to eat Fishel but is that's not
visual okay so this is a wonderful
question that very few people relate to
but those who do relate to it will find
it profound
so here's the moral dilemma Kirkland
potato chips are wonderful but they're
not bishel ISRO now there are Orthodox
rabbis who will tell you that the potato
what special you throw well be sure you
throw let's get into a little bit I
actually had to study these salakas to
become a rabbi that perfectly kosher
food that was cooked by non-jews can be
prohibited
um just because there's this additional
rabbinic enactment that we're supposed
to eat food that was uh cooked by Jews
and like yeah he didn't even know about
this bishop okay so I'm just what about
Caterers what about Caterers yeah that's
why you'll notice that by the caterer
yeah well that's why okay now we're
getting a fascinating discussion and
that's how you're gonna notice
so there's something called there's
something called turning on the flame or
turning up the flame
of it
okay at any rate so we're getting a
fascinating discussion of visual Israel
at any rate
but the foods that have to be cooked by
Jews are only foods that would be served
at a state dinner
something that would be fit for the
table of Kings so the question guys
don't chat among yourself while I'm
talking about something that you find
not relevant that's not fair okay
so here's the thing
by the way I'll tell you about him since
you got me started on a tangent now I
love tangents
okay you know it was always known that
this is before the Advent of such
ubiquitous kosher options that a Jew
wherever you were you could find a box
of manishevitz matzah and you can find a
can of sardines and the sardines that
was like that was your protein that was
it okay and the bottle of gefiltevus
yeah yeah but even in yeah the jelly
jelly broth felt the fish but
even in places where they didn't have
the jelly breath filter fish you could
find a can of sardines and then somebody
started saying uh uh uh you can't eat
the sardines because there's a brand of
sardines called King Oscar sardines King
Oscar was the king of Sweden and
therefore it means that sardines
they are fit for a king's table because
King Oscar is a king
and therefore you can no longer eat the
sardines because they have to be Bishop
you throw and sorry
so what's the answer actually
King Oscar it's a branding it's a
branding there's no King Oscar no there
was a king oscar but he didn't make
sardines someone someone you're right
yeah yeah
um it's called merchandising
by the way what is the most profitable
brand in all of merchandising in the
history of the world just guess
all seasons no merchandising means you
sell your little image and other people
make products with it on it just guess
what
Nike is a brand in and of itself I'm
talking about people who don't make
their own stuff they just don't think we
know you don't know
Pokemon go look it up
Pokemon huge Pokemon yeah yeah
okay I'm just telling you I'm just
telling you
okay you want to get me started on
tangents I will punish you with the most
irrelevant tangents okay at any rate so
King Oscar would only eat the sardines
on his hunting trips
no because they store well you can bring
them on your hunting trips and then have
refrigerators in the hunting trip
so he didn't serve them at State dinners
and therefore sardines are not served on
a king's table and sardines do not have
to be visual use at all but the jury is
still out about potato chips and there
are Orthodox or rabbis who will tell you
the potato chips do have to be misfully
installed and there are Orthodox will
tell you they do not and then don't get
me started on the Pringles the Pringles
could be better the Pringles could be
worse the Pringles because I want to but
that's not King's table I want to tell
you about the but well here's the whole
debate is it about the form or is it
about the original thing because
potatoes like a baked potato would be
served on a king's table maybe not in a
potato chip form but does it go by the
food or does it go by the form like a
hamburger wouldn't be served on a king's
table but beef would
so if you take the steak and grind it in
a hamburger does it no longer oh this is
so confusing at any rate so the answer
is
you are surely
doing
the world of favor
when you control yourself and do not eat
the Kirkland potato chips
thank you
thank you for your service
what
it doesn't matter because if it's
prohibited then you're surely like the
model of how we learned this thing was
to avoid prohibited things and then if
it's not even prohibited you're still
doing it so either way you're making the
world a better place by not eating the
Kirkland potato chips
is it just the
just the communities do I have already
for potato chips okay
so let's let's continue
uh
yeah and so too watch this guys the cane
and so too
milit
if you
if you hold back your mouth
from speaking words mundane words that
you really want to say now are we
talking about Lush and Hara no how do
you know we're not talking about
nothing right very good because after
all the Pokemon and everything you guys
still are sharp that's good I thought I
distracted you so much you would not
even remember what we're learning today
so you're right because if it were Lush
and harder then obviously you're not
allowed to speak Russian heart I mean
slander is gossip you're not allowed to
speak that but we're talking about
things that you could speak about
there's nothing wrong with speaking
about it hey did you watch the Oscars I
don't know maybe that's prohibited but
well I'm just thinking about inane
conversation people try to have with me
so oh how's the weather oh did you watch
that sports game last night with the
local team that kind of stuff yeah well
you told us that when we go to the net
you know to the next world yeah that's
open to hear the back of our heads what
chapter little voice what chapter
know what's just gas just gas just gas
just it was about hell yes what chapter
guess
I don't like how I never learned about
how until Rabbi time was okay I'm the
first person to tell you about Johanna
okay so I'm glad that I exposed you to
that concert it's a Jewish concept
what chapter of Tanya was
okay I open it up to everyone what
chapter of time did we talk about it
no no no it's much earlier much earlier
close to 10 yeah okay it was eight
okay and at any rate so you want to say
something it's not a prohibited thing to
say it's just inane stuff
it's just inane stuff that really has no
purpose but it's fun to talk about
and uh you say to yourself you know what
no no I'm not going to do it do you
realize the power you have at that
moment when you refrain from having this
inane conversation not prohibited
conversation totally permissible but
valueless conversation when you were
afraid from having that conversation
you actually
decrease
the negativity in the world and you
increase the positivity in the world
yeah yeah
when women have valueless conversation
they're really connecting you know it's
interesting
it speaks about whether you're allowed
to speak about
mundane things on Shabbos because
Shabbos is a holy day
and it actually says if you're talking
to an Amma audits who's incapable of
speaking about
Torah study
then you can give him oinig Shabbos by
talking to him about mundane things
so maybe I'm just saying maybe the
argument is if it's for the sake of
bonding
right and then it's accomplishing
something right so then it has a purpose
and I want to tell you something I have
forced myself to have those ridiculous
conversations
no no Pokemon I wanted to speak about
Pokemon I wanted to speak about Pokemon
but not everyone could have like
sometimes you'll be in a conversation
with someone you want to go to the next
level but they just they're not ready
or that's just them and you're like it's
like almost like painful to talk about
but they need that so how
thing that could come off itself it's
like oh I can't speak up mundane thing
but this person right in front of me
okay that's very important obviously
that this is not supposed to be
weaponized as like uh oh sorry I can't
talk to you about
this inane subject I'm not going to
speak to you about what yeah politics I
was going to go even more inane like
your uh green apple scented shampoo I'm
really not interested to hear about it
and that you have a coupon for it I
really don't want to hear about it
because I'm trying to subjugate forces
of negativity in the universe as per
chapter 27 of Tanya so that would
probably be
um what do you call it yatsa Scott you'd
be
yeah you'd be undercutting the whole
purpose of it because you like insult
somebody and
yeah
it would yeah that's so that's up that's
not what we're talking about obviously
yeah we've all had moments where you
really want to say something and you
hold back right that's what right but
we're not talking about something
prohibited where it's like you know this
could be Russian harda I better skip it
that's not what we're talking about here
here we're talking about something I
know it's not lotion
yeah
okay
he gives another example wow guys don't
get scared when I'm gonna read this no
don't get scared
no no
the rain
begin
thoughts
yes you can let's frame this in a
positive in a positive way because this
whole chapter has been about framing
this as an advantage as an opportunity
remember the whole chapter is about this
is an opportunity the fact that you're
distracted by things is not it's not a
problem it's it's a great opportunity to
to serve Hashem by overcoming that that
challenge
so
even on a thought level if you have the
desire to think about something and you
say to yourself nope nope not going to
go there
that also triggers that Universal ripple
effect of subjugating negativity in the
entire world
this I do all the time
it's all done I don't think about that
yeah
but we do think about it is
he says even a little bit can you
imagine that even a little bit
[Music]
the original thought is not in our
control surely not surely not but what
we're saying is are you going to
entertain it are you going to open the
door for it and say come on in put on a
pair of slippers I'll bring you some tea
so we're going to say no
we're not going to give into it
when you don't give in to
entertaining that fantasy you are
subjugating the negativity down here and
then my reciprocal effect is
causes an abundance of Holiness to be
elevated throughout the world in other
words just makes the world a better
place yeah
okay that sounds great
no I don't think so I think that sounds
positive
negative thought or even something
neutral
ity
you never thought you never sat and
wasted time thinking about stuff that's
totally not prohibited but it's just a
waste of time
you sit there be like hmm
what should I wear to the wedding should
I wear and I'll wear the mauve shoes no
the taupe shoes
so then you think about it but to think
about it for five hours maybe it's
excessive
because I have tonight will I am I going
to get the sushi or am I going to get
the I didn't think about
that you didn't think about that it's
like obsessed are they obsessive things
obsessive thoughts no no no yeah we're
not talking about a health issue no no
we're talking about normal stuff
okay so it says it has this reciprocal
effects
this reciprocal effect that you're
triggering that's causing Holiness to
flow in the world
we spoke about how it affects the world
obviously it'll affect you in a positive
way as well because you're the cause of
it you triggered it so it's going to
make your life better as well
and what form will it make you will it
make you win the lottery
no that's not what it'll do let's say
yes
it's going to give you a boost in your
service of Hashem sorry to disappoint
you but that's what it's going to do
that when you
exert self-mastery rather in pushing off
your meal or not speaking permissible
stuff that has no content or value or by
not indulging in a fantasy that's a
harmless innocent fantasy but it's just
not productive
when you do that
it has a cosmic ripple effect
and it will specifically boost you up
and make you stronger in serving Hashem
yeah
okay
we know this stuff now
can we should we have like a mutual like
we see each other but like okay let's
set an intention that we're not gonna
say hello yet we're going to like delay
it for the sake of breaking no no I
don't like that idea no no in fact what
I would
yeah what I would say is if you're in a
the question was when we come to Tanya
class should we all like delay saying
hello to each other and indulging in the
social niceties because we're so what I
would tell you is
this room and this place and the people
here are rare people forget about
connection I don't care about connection
there's rare there are not that many
people in the world who are capable of
having the kind of conversation that the
students of this class are capable of
having so if I were you from the second
I walked in the door even from the
second I saw somebody on Central Avenue
I would start having a meaningful
conversation with them because how many
other people in the world are capable of
discussing things with this depth and
this this level of of
appreciation of
what life is really all about so like
yeah I would talk probably more here and
then less
in other places where all people want to
talk about is the the green apple
scented shampoo I probably speak Less in
those places but over here where people
are capable of speaking about
uh
uh all types of deep stuff yeah just
I'll just jump into the conversation
yes it is a Mitzvah to greet everybody
with a happy countenance with a smile
that's true too yes
okay
and this is what the sages say
all the mechanics
when a person
sanctifies himself a little bit down
here and now we know what does it mean
the sanctification is one of those vague
terms what does it mean he puts on robes
what does it mean he sanctifies himself
elevates himself what does it mean he
elevates that's also vague
Master self he exhibits some
self-mastery yes so sanctifies himself
means that he
shows that he's a balabas that he is not
a victim to whatever his urges are even
permissible urges he has the ability to
say you know what not now not now
I'm not going to let my internal toddler
tell me that we're putting this in the
shopping cart and we're buying this no
no we're not no we have shop of cereal
already put it back
that's right
you know
there's an age that every Jewish person
reaches
where you realize that you can eat
Shabbos cereal oh wait
so when you sanctify yourself a little
bit down here
mikachu
they who's they you know they they it's
because it says the plural
they sanctify you a lot from above what
it means is the rich get richer the poor
get poorer that if you act a little bit
holy down here and again holy what does
holy mean holy means show some
self-mastery even a little bit down here
the ripple effect is going to be that it
comes back to you
with compounded interest so act a little
bit like you're in self-control and it
will come back to you and you'll have
even more self-control wow
the VOD ma what yeah in real life yeah
down here physical embodied soul
yeah in day-to-day life with your soul
in your body yes yes yes yes yes
oh then it's then it's like the virtuous
circle the more you do it the more you
can do it and then the more you can do
it and the more you can do it
because you're getting a spiritual boost
no it's not just your anything any skill
you can get better at
well hold on there's a lot of stuff
going on one at a time one at a time
the self-control
for the purpose of glorifying Hashem not
self-control like I said it's not
intermittent fasting it's not
self-control for a neutral goal okay
it's it's self-control for the purpose
of glorifying Hashem so you do a little
bit down here even a little bit you push
off the meal half an hour
then it causes a ripple effect in the
world makes the world a better place but
also that comes back to you makes you
more holy and now you're more holy oh
you have more self-control so it's a
virtuous circle where you can you get
better and better and better at it and
more and more powerful
yeah yeah
food and all of it how does
make us how does it make the world
better world well we said this we said
this when when you exert self-control
when you show that you are not at the
mercy of your desires even if they are
perfectly permissible desires so eating
and you right whatever it is
you
show
that
you are in control you as a let's say a
servant of Hashem
and therefore it becomes more and more
evident how Hashem is in control in this
world
it's a it's a it's a reciprocal effect
Hashem set it up that way
that when you push the button down here
it's like a Rube Goldberg machine it
triggers these effects Way Beyond you so
there's like a micro and a macro going
on the micro and the macro yeah and the
micro the macro and the micro again
because then it comes back to you
it would reward you in this lot like
you're almost you're feeling the energy
of it right but then as you get stronger
depression may be challenges oh don't
think I'll cut I can't take that today
okay it's
true but I'm just not strong enough to
take it yes it's true okay let's talk
about for five seconds
yes as you get stronger Hashem tests you
more but I don't yeah let's not I don't
want to talk about it but it's true I'm
not gonna pretend it's not true but I
don't want to think about it right now
okay
yes
foreign
[Applause]
just as hard
as they've always been if when you
whatever
no but like that's always the answer
no I mean it is relevant to my like if
if why should something get harder if we
have if once you have self Mastery
Hashem actually does this like I said
where he actually makes it easier for
you to master so I'll tell you that I
would feel oh it's easier who remembers
chapter 13. I'll go back what was it
about
who knows just to know by heart chapter
13 we said that your animal Soul even if
you're abandoning and you exhibit
perfect Behavior
your animal soul is actually going to
get stronger through your lifetime of
course yeah even if you do nothing to
improperly indulge it it will
automatically get stronger per se
through your lifetime so you don't
starve whatever so you
yep there's always that balance that's
right yeah okay let's continue because I
would love to finish this chapter today
foreign
so aside from the fact
that you are
performing you're fulfilling a positive
commandment of sanctify yourselves
that was your line right
when you sanctify yourself in
permissible matters it's a mitzvah
you shall
make yourselves holy
make yourselves holy in other words act
as if that's how I would translate that
make yourselves holy means you're not
really so holy
oh so why should I act that Holy trust
me act that Holy claim I that is to say
even though the truth is that you're not
totally above the negativity meaning it
still has a foothold in your life it
still does speak to you it still does
speak compellingly to you you do have
those urges it very much is a part of
your conscious experience
because it's still in its full force and
like I mentioned from chapter 13 maybe
even a little stronger keeping up with
you when you work out in the gym you put
more weight on the bar right okay
Rock but however
you overcome that
Visa then you will become actually holy
claymark
you will ultimately become truly
holy that means above having these
problems
because of that reciprocal effect which
is disproportionate
you remember we said do it a little bit
down here Hashem does it a lot from up
there it's a disproportionate reciprocal
effect it's Reaganomics trickle-down
effect
clay merciful yes
and they will help him meaning the the
good guys the forces from above to
slowly or incrementally get that
negativity out of your heart
so you do what you can do even if it's
inauthentic that's our Point here even
if it's inauthentic meaning to say I
know good and well that if I push off my
meal
I'm still going to ultimately I'm going
to eat shop of cereal for dinner
on a Wednesday
okay I'm going to but you know what
maybe I'll sit down and I'll go to
soulwords.org and I'll listen to a class
first
leg and then
and then I'll have my
my Cocoa Pebbles
right and so even though I know that to
a certain effect to a certain extent
that's faking it because who am I
fooling I do like Cocoa Pebbles but
you don't have to eat the whole box yeah
yeah okay
um whatever amount
to whatever degree you can exert some
self-mastery this is not binary it's not
all or nothing black and white like
either you are you're not
cherish every moment of it cherish every
amount of it
so
now if we're talking about things that
are prohibited obviously
what what you're not allowed to do
you're not allowed to do okay that's
and obviously we also know that we're
not perfect and sometimes we do things
that we're not allowed to do but we
can't sanction that we can't even
pretend that that's okay it's not okay
but we're talking about in the realm of
things that are okay that are not
prohibited
but it would just be a Holier thing
to
outgrow it to not really be so
interested in it anymore now the reality
is I haven't outgrown it and I am still
interested in it but if I can just push
it off even just delay it even just do a
little less of it again these are
permissible things if it's something
prohibited you gotta you can't do any of
it I'm
non-negotiable but we're talking about
permissible things things you're allowed
to do
and eventually I am going to do it I am
going to give in but I'm gonna exert
some self-mastery for a little while and
we have to understand that has power it
affects the world in a positive way and
it will come back to you and it'll
affect you in a positive way
yes and that's what it means it'll
affect you in a positive way
but that's what he's saying what does it
mean it'll affect you in a positive way
affect you in a positive way I said
doesn't mean you win the lottery effect
in a positive way means those acts of
self-mastery which were perhaps
inauthentic will become more
authenticity
same concept maybe the identical concept
yeah okay and that's the end of chapter
27.
