Day #59–Rambam DAILY Sefer HaMitzvos

is day number 59 of our daily study of ramipse of Mitzvahs and we're in a new set of halachas in our daily three chapters of mission of Torah uh yesterday we finished the laws of Schaefer love I'm not sure if I mentioned that that was a CM that we finished those halachas and uh today we're starting a new set of halachas the laws of the half shekel chapters 1 2 and 3 today and uh there's four chapters total so we'll have today and and tomorrow and then tomorrow will also start a new set of laws but let's talk about the Mitzvah that corresponds to hilkash Gollum today that is positive commandment 171 was a flat tax donation that every man was obligated to give during the times of the base amigdish when the temple stood the rambam explains in severe mits was based on the explanations in the tractate scullum this entire tractate called Gollum that talks about this law in depth that it is not applicable the Mitzvah cannot be performed when the temple is not standing just to uh clarify in case you're thinking hold on a second I think I remember though giving half shekel uh giving a half shekel why are you saying we don't do it okay so there's a custom that on the day before Purim which is usually tinusester as we're going into the the tiny sisters the fast disaster as we're going into Purim so we do a half shekel as a custom that's not the same as the biblical commandment it is reminiscent of it but it's uh not the biblical commandment as mentioned this was something was only done in the times of the temple and the primary use of these funds indeed was to pay for communal sacrifices which would have been offered in the temple that's our myth for today we will see you God willing tomorrow
