Day #40–Rambam DAILY Sefer HaMitzvos

is day number 40 in our daily study of rambam Seifert in our daily study of three chapters of mishna Taylor we're still in Helga Shabbos specifically in chapters 9 10 and 11 of those laws and our Mitzvah today from savior mitsu is the same Mitzvah that we had yesterday here I'm going to say it negative commandment 320 the prohibition against I'm not going to translate hey I didn't translate Shabbos either right I mentioned yesterday Malacca is a tricky word to translate because often we translate it as work or labor but it's kind of misleading because it doesn't have to be strenuous labor it doesn't have to be something that takes any exertion it could be uh throwing a twig onto a fire is is malacha so a better translation would be a productive act or a useful act that causes some type of change in the world and it doesn't have to be something that takes a lot of effort um I'll share with you something interesting about this mitzvah because we're studying it again today and that is in the oral law the way that the Sages describe to us the forms of prohibited malacha is they say that there are our boyim 40 minus one forms of Malachi why did they say 40 minus one so one explanation is well because labor is mentioned 40 times in the Torah okay but that begs the question so why aren't there 40 prohibited forms of Labor and if indeed there are only 39 so just say it in a simpler way just say 39 why do you have to say it in this formula which is seemingly unnecessarily complicated 40 minus one which is 39 just say 39. I'll explain to you what I said this uh says about this the truth is that there are 40 forms of labor on Shabbos but only 39 of them are prohibited one of them is not only permissible but it is absolutely the most congruent way of being involved in Shabbos and that is what form of productive or creative activity specifically through our darwining and through our learning just because Shabbos is a day of rest doesn't mean it's a lazy day it's not a empty day God forbid it's a day of cessation of mundane labor but it's actually a day of really taking our our service of Hashem to a higher level with greater focus and greater intent so it's it's not meant to be a uh a lazy day Shabbos is actually a day for for work but the right kind of work for davening and meditating and thinking about Hashem and and studying Torah all of those things which are our spiritual labor not only those are permissible on Travis but totally within the spirit of Shabbos and that's that's how to have a real Shabbos with real Avida okay we'll see you tomorrow God willing
