Can ambition become an addiction? Ambition is one of the biggest addictions. In fact, all the most ambitious people I know have textbook addictive personalities. Does that mean then that successful people are all messed up? And the answer is to some extent, yes, but they don't have to remain messed up. In fact, there's no greater redemption arc than the person who was messed up and now is healed. The healing of the ambition addict is not that they no longer pursue success and accomplishment and goals. It's that they no longer depend on that to feel okay about themselves. When it's an addiction, it's in order to cover up the fact that I'm not okay with myself and I convince myself that if I achieve one more goal, then I can finally love myself and it never happens because as soon as I achieve one thing, I need to achieve the next thing and any feeling of I'm okay lasts for a half a second if that. So, there's a great deal of desperation in needing to achieve in order to feel okay and then it's this elusive feeling that you never really catch. The recovered ambition addict is someone who can use their skills and their know-how to do great things, but they no longer do it from a place of desperation. They do it from a place of peace. And in fact, when they reach that point, they become even more ambitious and more successful.
