Hello.
It is Thursday
and today we read one of the most famous
stories in the entire Tyra. Yitzk is
towards the end of his life. His sight
is failing him and he wants to give a
braha to Asov. Asov goes to hunt for
some food. Rifka understands what's at
stake. She dresses up Yakov in Asov's
clothing. Yitzk gives Yakov the bra that
he intended for Asov. Asov comes back
and he's a broken man.
Well, the question is
Yakov is the man of truths.
Truth. This is trickery.
What is going on over here? How do we
understand it? And the answer is is that
there's truth with a lowercase T and
then there's truth with a capital T. The
capital T is the Hashem, the will of
Hashem. That's the only truth that
matters. Sometimes we get bogged down
with the small little unimportant
details. There's a big truth at stake
and it's God's master plan and Yakov
knows it. Rifka knows it. She sees it
and she does what's necessary to be
done. If the Nazis came into a house and
they said, "Tell me, where's your
family?" Are you telling the truth by
giving away where those people are
hiding? No.
You're a terrible person if you tell
them where they're hiding. Truth means
truth with a capital T.
And there's one community that excels in
that and that's the Yakkesha
family, the Yakasha community, the
German community of German Jews most
recently in Washington Heights where
Shiman Schwab was the leader. He was one
of the Torah giants of the last
generation. And he told over a story
from his youth that one time he went
shopping for his mother. She gave him
some money. He went to the store. He
bought what she asked for and then there
was some extra money and he really
really wanted a chocolate bar. He bought
the chocolate bar and he figured he'll
tell his mother there was no change. She
comes home and she says, "What's going
on?" And he says, "Well, there was
nothing left." She sees the chocolate
bar wrapper in his pocket.
That night was a Friday night and
everybody came to get brahas.
And then it was his turn. It was
Shiman's turn. And Ribshiman Schwab's
father looks at his young Shim and he
says, "Shim,
today you lied.
Today you didn't tell the truth.
And when you don't tell the truth,
you don't see braha. You don't see
blessing in your life." and he refused
to give him a braha that Friday night.
It seems harsh, but Shim would never
knowingly tell a lie again. Tell the
truth. It's never ever worth it to lie.
Have a great day.
