okay as we've done in the past we're
going to take a look at text and in this
case we're going to look look at text
concerning the creation of man what I'd
like you to do for just a brief moment
is take a look on your Source sheets you
should have them in front of you take a
look at the two sections that are on
page one and page two in Hebrew or in
English
let me just explain that section number
one is the description of man's creation
within the context of the six days of
creation the second paragraph is
actually cobbled
together from the second description of
man's creation and the creation of so
it's if you say dot dot dot that means
that it's not following directly on
itself but that there's text left out
and that I chose to to move to the next
text so just take a look quickly at
those two sections and then we'll take a
look at the questions that might emerge
from
[Music]
them once again I ask you to look at
these sections as if you've never seen
them before as if this is the first time
that you're looking at
them
okay uh even if you haven't finished
stop now and we'll we'll move along turn
to the third page and you'll see that
I've listed in this case I'm not going
to ask you to raise the questions
because I think the questions are fairly
obvious right and I'm raising the
following questions what are why are
there two separate versions of man's
creation in other words why does the
Torah first speak of man's Creation in
the context of the six days of creation
and then return to it and discuss it
again in the in the second chapter now
this of course gives rise to much of the
documentary criticism that is found on
the Torah text from those who don't
believe that the Torah is is a Divine
text and led people to believe and led
people to say that it was written by two
authors um and and underscoring that
someone mentioned last week that in the
first section you only see Elohim you
don't see the name of Hashem in the
second section you see the name of
Hashem this gave Credence to that
documentary hypothesis which of course
we we disagree with and that is that
these are two different authors speaking
of man's
creation why are there the differences
assuming that that documentary
hypothesis is absolutely wrong and that
this is one author and that author is
Hashem why are there differences in the
two versions and there are very serious
differences in the two versions in the
first version it just says Hashem is
that man is created but Elohim it
doesn't tell us any of the details of
the creation the second version speaks
of the creation of man from the dust of
the earth into which God breathes life
the fact that hashem's name is found in
the second in the first section you see
a commandment
you see that man is told to rule over
the entire world in the second section
you're told that he's placed
inen and as we pointed out last week
that is one of the dialectics in the
Torah where the Torah takes two opposite
points of view or two opposite
perspectives and puts them together and
it's the balance between the two that
we're meant to see which is to work the
ground and to preserve it to guard it
and that that concept is only found in
the second aspect of creation the second
section of man's creation is not found
in the
first looking at the second section
going through the questions why does God
create man
alone and why does it say in the first
case in the beginning it says man is
created male and F fale and then in the
second section it talks about man's
creation alone and then suddenly it
would seem God wakes up and
says it's not good for man to be alone
so how do we deal with that sudden
apparent sudden realization on the part
of God doesn't God know from the start
that it's not good for man to be alone
and what's the purpose of parading all
the animals what's the meaning of the
phrase AER KGO all of these are very
serious questions that we are raising as
we look at these two versions of man's
creation found in the Torah did I leave
any questions out do you have any other
questions yes seems like God wants us to
be vegetarians that by the way is
absolutely true that that He suggests
okay and actually because this is being
taped I'm going to repeat questions that
that are said so that people will hear
it on the tape it seems that God wants
man to be vegetarian
Adam and Eve were only allowed to eat V
vegetables they were not allowed to eat
um they were not allowed to eat meat
that prohibition on eating meat lasts
until until the days of no when After
the flood God allows man suddenly to eat
meat so that raises a question which
we're not going to deal with that in
depth now does that mean that the
ultimate goal is for man to be a veget
Arian and that the eating of meat is
only a concession After the flood and
there are those who hold that way and R
cook for example the first cheap rabo of
Israel was a vegetarian and felt that
the days and he when he talked about the
reinstitution of sacrifices it was his
opinion that only grain sacrifices would
be reinstituted and not animals at at
the ultimate level so very good point
very very good very astute observation
yes why why does God give Adam the job
of naming right everyone excellent what
does that what does that have to do and
what does that signify what does it mean
to name the animals excellent any other
questions the first it
says we know that is right but he did
take a okay and the second time it says
okay so why is there a difference in the
verb in the first case where it says V
and by means to create in something from
nothing and why is the second case does
the verb and we we spent a lot of times
with verbs last week why is it V which
means to Fashion okay excellent yes not
necessary today but I always have
this deep question Tree of Life the of
Knowledge Tree of knowledge okaying a
self destru we will we will or the
question is raised about the tree of
life and and the tree of knowledge of
Good and Evil we are not going to talk
about that today that is going to be
another class and uh or another few
classes all right we are only to so
thank you for the question it's an
excellent question but not one for today
yes well another
one he is the one who's making right
okay so we spoke about that a little bit
last time about that could be his way of
announcing that we are about to do
something new new the Royal We There are
a variety of different possibilities
about why it says
Nas okay let's start with the question
why are there two different versions of
the creation of man let's start with
that in a global sense before we get to
the particulars particularly of the
second so number one a pup shot answer
could very well be that God paints broad
brush Strokes
and then deals with details during the
six days of creation God is painting the
broad brush Strokes he's giving you the
broad introduction man is created male
and female because ultimately that will
be the case ultimately man will be
created male and female in once God
gives the broad introduction he then
proceeds to narrow down to funnel down
and this is part of this by the way is
part of what seems to be a continuing
pattern in the Torah in that you start
with Broad and you funnel down to narrow
all right here for example you started
with broad the creation of the world and
then you funnel down to the creation of
man you will then funnel down to Noah
you will then funnel down from Noah and
the world to Abraham so you're moving
from the general to the specific and
therefore on a very real sense one could
say that that's why it says that's why
you have the two versions that you're
starting you start off in a global sense
and you narrow it down to the creation
of
man it remains however for ra
Sal in his very
famous 63 page essay The Lonely Man of
faith it remains for R salvic to say no
it's not simply that simple an answer
and he offers a f fascinating
fascinating observation on the two
versions of the creation of man which we
will not be able to go into in depth but
I'm going to quote some paragraphs for
you and I'm going to quote some
paragraphs for you to give you a broad
introduction is to how he views and how
This brilliant man sees in the Torah
something that we would not necessarily
see I also want you to understand and
this is I I I I had this H to learn in
is sheer for for a few years at in my in
my time in Yeshiva
University here is a man who believed
that you were able to find he deeply
immersed in Torah would tell you that
Torah study is the most important thing
in the world but was immersed in
knowledge in general and felt very
strongly that you could find knowledge
in the outside world the famous joke is
that someone walked into the RV's study
and saw the thesaurus on the desk and
the other person said yes the RV was
correcting the
thesaurus right if you look and you
listen to the words that I'm quoting and
this is one of the very few times where
the RV actually wrote down his words he
usually taught
orally he starts off by saying and again
and I'm not doing it justice because I'm
only quoting small small pieces we all
know that the Bible offers two accounts
of the creation of man we are also aware
of the theory suggested by B biblical
critics that these two accounts are two
versions uh and
traditions skipping however the answer
lies not in an alleged dual tradition
but in dual
man not in an imaginary contradiction
between two
versions but in a real contradiction in
the the nature of man the two accounts
deal with two
atoms two men two fathers of mankind two
types two representatives of humanity
and it is no wonder that they are not
identical so let's start with what he's
saying what he's saying is that the two
versions of man's creation are Adam one
and Adam two now does he mean that there
are two different atams completely no
what he means is that Adam is going to
be a creature of in
contradiction and intention and that
there will be two different attributes
of humanity embedded in this first man
that emerge from these two
accounts all right now let's let's
remember the first account spoke
of you shall rule over the the the um
fish of the earth and the creatures of
the
world according to the RV that first man
is majestic man that is the man who is
told by God to rule over the world to to
to to harness it to to find out
therefore Adam the first and again I'm
skipping is interested in just one
single aspect of reality
and asks one question only quote how
does the cosmos
function he is not fascinated At All by
why does the cosmos function he is only
curious to know how it
works he's only curious to know how it
works in fact even this how question
with which Adam the first is preoccupied
in scope he is concerned not with the
question per se but with its practical
implications
in other words when the Torah says God
creates
man he is creating that aspect of man
Adam one who rules over the world who's
interested in finding out who's
scientific who's interested in finding
out the intricacies the secrets how does
it work what are the what are the
potentialities and the RO goes on to
explain that Adam the first is doing
this because in the final analysis what
is he looking for
himself he's trying to find and the word
that the RV uses here is dignity dignity
the dignified man is someone who raises
himself up is someone who sees himself
above the world ruling over the world
The Brute and this is his language The
Brute is the is the man who hasn't yet
discovered how to harness things how to
how to the the the beastial existence is
I'm controlled by the things around me
the dignified existence is what I
control I'm in charge how does this work
and the r goes on to say it is rather
that this desire is nurtured by the
selfish desire on the part of man to
better his own position in relation to
his environment this is and to dominate
The Elemental natural forces and to put
them at his own disposal this practical
interest arouses his will to learn the
secrets of nature he is completely
utilitarian as far as motivation
technology design and right and
methodology are concerned so in other
words Adam one Majestic man he wants to
explore he wants to explore he wants to
find exploit and exp thank you right and
he wants to exploit exactly Adam the
first wants to exploit and therefore the
rub will say in doing
this and this is this is the the last
paragraph I'll read about Majestic man
in doing this Adam the first is trying
to carry out the Mandate entrusted to
him by his maker who at the dawn of the
sixth mysterious day of creation
addressed himself to man and summoned
him to fill the Earth and to subdue it
it is God who decreed that the story of
Adam the first be the great Saga of
freedom of man slave who gradually
transforms himself into man
Master brilliant while pursuing this
goal driven by an urge which he cannot
but obey Adam the first transcends the
limits of the reasonable and the
probable even this and I'm skipping even
this longing for vastness man reaching
for the distant star
is acting in harmony with his nature
which was created willed and directed by
his maker he is a manifestation of
obedience rather than Rebellion against
God thus in some we have obtained the
following triple equation Humanity
equals dignity equals responsibility
equals
Majesty okay we all there we got it
that's Adam
one Adam
two Adam II like Adam the first is also
intrigued by the cosmos intellectual
curiosity drives them both to confront
the courageously The Mysterious Magnum
of
being however while the cosmos provokes
the mam the first to ask the how
question what is going to be Adam II's
question why he wants to know why is it
what is it who is is it he wants to know
what's what's this all about that's Adam
II he wonders why did the world in its
totality come into existence why is man
confronted by the stupendous and
indifferent order of things and events
he asks what is the purpose of all this
what is the message that is invented in
organic and inorganic matter what does a
great challenge reaching me from Beyond
the fringes of the universe etc etc and
then he finally says man wants to know
and this is how he describes man's
relationship with the
kades he wants to know who is He Who
Trails me steadily Uninvited and
unwanted like an everlasting Shadow and
vanishes into the recesses of
transcendence the very instant I turn
around to confront this numinous awesome
and mysterious he wow right who is this
who feels Adam with awe and Bliss
humility and a sense of greatness
concurrently Who Is He To whom Adam
clings in Passionate all consuming love
and from whom he flees in Mortal fear
and dread he's talking about what his
relationship with Hashem who is He Who
fascinates Adam irresistibly and at the
same time rejects him irrevocably who is
he whom Adam experiences both as the
mysterium
tremendum and as the most element most
obvious and most understandable truth
two more sentences and we're g I hope
I'm not boring who is he is doest relus
and do us aband us
simultaneously who is He Who lifegiving
and life Waring breath Adam FS
constantly and who at the same time
remains distant and remote from all so
Adam II in marks on a very different
Quest Adam II is asking why he said
asking what is God who is God very very
different questions from Adam the first
and can we see that in the text let's
take a look at how the
RV understands that in the text you take
a look at the first paragraph the first
paragraph which describes Adam one on
page one right what does God say to him
says
to there's no question he will be in my
image meaning that he will be able to
Aspire to Godlike
characteristics
be etc etc you're in charge right Adam
one you're in charge and go find out and
and and he I've given everything to you
and I've given everything to your to the
the the dominion over all is in your
hands no description of man's own
mortality no description of man's own
Earthly existence a totally total a
total description of a majestic man who
is in charge now let's take a look at
the second
Parra take a look at the fourth or fifth
line where it
says elim so first of all what what
appears in the second paragraph that
doesn't appear in first God's name right
and because God's name doesn't belong in
the first paragraph in the first
paragraph I'm not interested in finding
out about God I'm interested only in
that aspect of God that is giving me the
right to rule over the world that
majesty and that is clear and I don't
have to worry about any any mysterious
aspects when we speak of Hashem Elohim
that's the introduction of God
in a personal sense that's the
introduction of who relates to man and
the struggle of that relationship which
the so beautifully
describes God fashion man Even though
now someone you asked before VRA is he
creates sure VRA means he's creating
something totally new but now it's
telling you how how is Man created
from the dust of the earth that is sober
that is not Majestic man that is not man
who is ruling over the world that is man
who is emerging from the dust Earth
Earth man okay that is that is man who
is emerging from the dust of the earth
now into which God breathes the soul of
life now I want us to understand that
that statement and the rub doesn't talk
about this directly that statement in
and of itself creates a confrontation in
man's Soul you are at once and I am at
once the rabbis will sum it
up that we are created from the upper
Spears and the lower stears by
definition that creates conflict stress
stress that you keep feeding me the
words that's great all right that keeps
that keeps she's my my our cousin by the
way um that keeps
uh that keeps
feeding the stress that exists in man's
Soul we are at once part of the world
part of the animal kingdom and yet we
aspire to Art to
poetry now other Faith Traditions look
at that conflict particularly
Catholicism ISM and what is their answer
to the conflict what is their what is
the answer of Catholic Christianity to
the conflict between the Earth and man
in man's Soul they focus on the earth
they focus on the
earth original
sin you f you separate the two and you
don't you aspire to which you aspire to
the upper spheres and that comes about
through Retreat from the world the more
you Retreat from the world the world is
corrupting its influence is corrupting
original sin the whole concept of
original sin that man is guilty of that
first sin performed by Adam and Do We
Believe by the way in original sin no do
we believe that we are affected by that
sin yes that's what I would call
intergenerational effect we are affected
by that sin because we're no longer
living in a it but are we guilty of the
fact that they ate from the Tree of
knowledge of Good and Evil no we're not
guilty of
that that you have to constantly that
you have to constantly deal with the
fact that there exists sin but we have
the ability to rule over it so but what
are we supposed to do with these two
Realms what are we supposed to do do we
believe in
retreat no we believe that you are
supposed to take those two Realms and
merge them together that you are having
acknowledge the existence of the two
Realms having been mavil and recognizing
that these are that these are elements
in Conflict we are then told to raise
the Earth heavenward and bring Heaven to
the Earth and we're told to sanctify
God's name there is nothing inherent we
are supposed to when when the Torah was
given to us we stood
where at the foot of Mount Si why didn't
we why didn't we climb why doesn't got
and God says you can not touch the
mountain and at the pain of death during
Revelation the major reason I believe is
because God wants us to understand that
his Revelation is to be found not in the
Su of mountain not in The Mists at the
top of the mountain well Revelation is
to be found rooted to this world living
in this world right and at the point
living in this world and sanctifying
this world that is man in partnership
with God bringing God into the
world when the very first time Moser
Renu speaks with God what's the first
thing he tells him to do take off your
take off your shoes the first thing
first thing take off your shoes you look
at this and you say my
goodness my goodness this is this is
God's first encounter with the greatest
leader we've ever known he's about to
launch him on his mission what would I
expect God to say motion do you know
what you're about to do do you know
who's talking to you do you know do you
know what what your job's going to be
take off your shoes that's the first
thing all right kind of very strange and
yet following shim her and taking him
one step further if you look at the
words what is the word what are the
words the words
are
don't come
near take off your
shoes because the land where you stand
upon is Holy Ground so most people
explain that most the commentaries
explain that to me that the land is Holy
because this is Mount Si and the respect
should be shown to the lamb but another
way to understand it is wherever you
place your foot will become ho there you
go take off your shoes because the place
on which you stand is Holy Ground what
do you mean man's job is to create
Holiness in this world through the
partnership between man and God this is
Adam 2 this is Adam II Adam II
struggling to find his place within and
so do we see do we see this beautiful
explanation of the r that these two
Renditions are very consciously created
by God not simply because he's going
from this the the the general to the
specific but because he wants us to
understand that there are two different
aspects to man both of them
legitimate both of them existent and
both of them vying for Supremacy in man
so he also points out that in the first
version you
have in the second version you have the
Man created alone in
theno he goes on to suggest and again
we're not going to read it inside but he
goes on to suggest that Adam the one
Adam the
first uses people around him he in order
to reach those those vast those vast
Mysteries he has a community
Adam II is
alone Adam II stands alone because it's
a mysterious personal Quest that that
cannot totally be shared it's a it's a
quest that each individual has to Embark
upon on his or her own and therefore man
is created alone and that answers the
other one of our questions why does God
create man alone and there are various
answers to that one one is the one I
just suggested that it's talking about
Adam II and his search for God is alone
it also also we are told that God
creates man alone to show the value and
the worth of every
individual there is a time that that if
you are
M if you raise one person then you are
creating an Mal and if you God forbid
destroy a person then you are destroy
and the recognition of the sanctity of
Life something that in our current world
is part of our battle against evil which
is the battle between the sanctification
of life and the sanctification of death
and destruction we are trying to create
a world where life is
Sanctified okay so therefore we've dealt
with the double the double story we've
seen that there are various different
ways to view it and we've spent some
time with the RV understanding his
perspective now let's go to the creation
of ab let's talk about that let's turn
to the second paragraph on the
page God creates man dust of the Earth
ET God
[Music]
creates God takes man and places him in
God we spoke about
that all right let's stop there what
happens God suddenly wakes up God
suddenly says whoa wait a minute I I
made a mistake it's not good for man to
be
alone what do you
say so when he sees that man is alone in
his
sphere
he pushes it pushes it further I think
he he's missing the a lot of
characteristics okay and the woman will
W be be able to add that okay
so two two comments one that God is
alone and therefore he wants man not to
be alone um there is a
medish which is a hard me that Hashem
says if man is alone he will rebel
against me because he will say just like
I'm alone in the heavens he's alone on
Earth and there will be a rebellion
you're suggesting that God creates uh
to supplement and we'll see that soon
yes the separation almost creates this
moment of letting Adam realize the value
of okay good good letting Adam realize
the value as opposed to okay yes but all
of this is
because relationship
with all right so he very good very good
he wants him to form a relationship with
other human beings because fundamentally
his real goal is to be able for man to
relate to God and you can only relate to
God by relating first to other human
beings these are beautiful ideas yes it
sounds like God is calling man it's not
good that there you go okay that's
probably the most direct answer to the
first question we have God knows it's
not good for man to be alone it's not
that he suddenly that he creates man
alone and suddenly realizes whoops
mistake right can't be not no what's
happening is Hashem creates man alone
because he wants man to realize himself
that it's not good to be alone now let's
understand something do you have to
teach your child to
share all right God has to teach Adam to
share all right in other words it is
only after Adam realizes the loss or the
absence of the
other it's only then that man is going
to be willing to share this world in
which he's standing alone in if you
suddenly put another being there then
what's going to happen what's going to
happen is
conflict you've got to first he has to
First realize his lack all right which
brings us to the parading of the animals
before
man right why why does God parade the
animals before man and what is the the
this concept of Adam naming the animals
so in context of what we're saying what
would you say why is God parading the
animals to show man that each one of
them has a
companion and he's naming each one
because he's looking to see what what's
the nature of that companionship what's
the nature of this being what's the
nature of this this what's the nature of
this be but what does he find he finds
that none of the companionships that he
sees will
what ultimately satisfy his own need his
need transcends that which he sees and
therefore Hashem is going to create an
AER
K what what's what what do we say about
that that phrase
again it's a dialectic it's a dialectic
so the the rabbis will confronted with
dialectics what the rabbis usually do is
they say it's either
or either you are
a if if he merits this will be a
relationship of Ezra
and if not it will
be there is a famous little you know one
of those one of those games we play with
words is and
Isa right and what do you have is
is is
is what's the difference the and the
when is present in a relationship
what what what is then you have an is
and is when a is absent what are you
left
with you're left with fire and
unfortunately we know we've seen God
forbid when when when when relationships
fall apart the the tremendous a the
tremendous fire that that rises
unfortunately sometimes in those
relationships so that's Accord that is
that's h looking at AER cono but we've
said that dialectic phrases don't have
to be understood either or dialectic
phrases like sh V
Aero can be understood as creating a
totality what is an AER can do someone
who is a
helpmate but separate there has to be a
recognition of the
individuality in the relationship and
only when there's an recognition of the
individuality and a respect for that
individuality in the
relationship will you be able to be to
have the E and therefore the a cono is a
to Total definition of the of a healthy
relationship between a man and a woman
what does God do God puts Adam to sleep
falls in the anesthesia olist puts Adam
to sleep and takes from his rib so there
are a variety of different different
medim and explanations about this first
of all one of the explanations found in
the gamar
is there that the first Adam was male
and female had both now and what's
fascinating about that of course is that
biologically that fetus as it develops
initially has the potential to go either
way and then develops one way or the
other we so so in in man's the creation
of man continually you have the
possibility of these two and you're
dividing the two I won't get into what
the world is doing with that today but
um enough said that that that that that
we're living in a very very very
difficult world and and I got out of the
pulpit Rabin it at the cusp of that of
that difficulty the rabbis who are
dealing with it now are are
facing unbelievable challenges yes why
did man create woman first why does God
create why didn't he create woman why
didn't he create woman first
okay
by a
man what he said he' already have
Perfection all right he already have
Perfection okay so there are a variety
of different explanations right one
explanation is he didn't create man
first that he created them together in
one another explanation is that V that
really were moving up the ladder and
that that the woman has been not the
woman has because it says even it says
that he built coming and playing with
the word be what does it mean to take
from the lid because you're taking from
that which is equal that which is the
side someone which is you're you're
takeing in other words you're creating
something that is that is equal that is
equivalent not one will rule over the
other but that the two will share in an
equal
partnership right what does it mean that
you had them together and you separated
them because they're ultimately meant to
be United and therefore the unification
of Adam and and therefore you will say
and therefore the Torah does something
very very very strange here in terms of
the usual Torah methodology take a look
at the last line of the
text all right after telling us
that
says this is the this is the bone of my
bone Flesh of My Flesh this now finally
I have found this this companion that
I'm searching for the Torah then says Al
Y and
therefore this is a out of totally out
of context all of a sudden the Torah is
preaching to us right it's not just
telling you usually it just tells us the
story and we're supposed to learn from
the story in this case the Torah is
telling us this is the ultimate
significance of this story that go ahead
there was no mother and father yeah
there was no mother and father at that
point good question that that makes that
makes the statement even stranger it's
speaking not of the story that just
occurred but it's speaking of the future
right and it's saying that it is the way
of Flesh it is the way of man that that
man and woman should come together again
that which was separated should
ultimately be joined and it's very
strange that the Torah goes out of its
way to say that and yet it's doing it
very Hashem is doing it with real
significance because it's showing us the
way of the world and it's also showing
us that each joining potentially creates
a whole new human being who is different
from that which existed before it's part
of the Act of Creation yes is only the
man obligated to leave his mother and
father that's a very good
question and and one might argue that uh
yes that that that woman that but the
answer seems to be the answer seems to
be that man is the active participant in
this case and man is the one who was m
so
[Music]
therefore etc
etc now it's the mother of the man
didn't want to let him go or the mother
of the man didn't want to let him go or
or the daughter doesn't want to leave
depending on how you depending on on how
you actually understand okay all right
so so therefore this this chapter
emerges as a study in m man's need for
for companionship as a study in man's
need to learn to share as a study in
man's need and what that companionship
should consist of and therefore although
the first time the Torah describes the
creation of man and woman it
says when it gets to the detailed
creation of man it will give you this
additional story with its moral
dimensions and with its importance
any questions up to this
point okay we're going to start winning
on appetite for the next step all right
the next step which she left so we'll
have to tell her that uh that that that
we
started the next step is going to be the
very first commandment God gives to
man and that is
what
the Trees of the garden you may
certainly
eat right first puru correct thank you
but the first negative commandment given
to man right from the Trees of the
garden you may certainly eat you
[Music]
may I'm going to I'm going to raise a
whole series of questions for you here
to start thinking about for the next
time all right some homework some
homework but instead of me raising them
why don't you raise
them the day the day you eat from it
you'll certainly die they don't die on
the day right
next why did he make that why did he
make that
tree what does the tree of knowledge of
Good and Evil represent and why is it
wrong to eat from
does God does man have free
will if he doesn't know the difference
between good and evil and if he doesn't
have free
will then can he be held culpable for
eating for the
tree why does
God what's wrong with it correct what's
wrong with eating from the tree all
right
and by the way isn't this a setup if you
isn't this a setup if you take a child
and you put a child into a room don't
and you fill that room with toys don't
and you put a box in the corner of the
room and you say play with any toy you
want just don't touch that box and you
leave the room where's the child going
to go straight to the
box so what is what is going going on
here and is this part of God's plan for
men but God wants man to to do this and
that this is now remember I will tell
you very clearly when we speak about
this that we don't believe in original
sin and one puip about that is very
interesting after the man eats from the
scent tree it
says man had relations with with his
wife and she gave birth and Christian
tradition says look look look look when
did the relationship the physical
relationship between a man and a woman
begin it began after eating from the
tree there's the proof of original
sin but Rashi says no and here's an
example of reading
text if it was happening at that point
would have
said
right means he did it before it happened
before and therefore the text is telling
you don't make the mistake of assuming
that man relates to woman only after
eating from the tree recognize that it
it predes the events of the tree so here
we have and place
G we have Majestic man and and by the
way Majestic woman or let's assume that
that woman at least in potential exists
in that Majestic man we
have at the same time the second element
of mankind that element that doesn't ask
how but asks why searches for God we
have them placed in donen we have the
story of the creation of Haba and we
will now enter into the mystery of the
story of the tree of knowledge of good
we're going to enter into that and we're
going to have to spend probably two one
or two sessions on it in order to fully
come to a conclusion as to what it might
be all right I will take any comments or
questions at this time yes
explain purpose of name the animals the
purpose naming the animals and it
seems is for man to see each creature
for what it is recognize its
nature recognize it and name it that's
the naming and then to recognize that
the companionship that that creature has
does not reach the level of
companionship of
search so he's he's looking he's looking
at each one of them he seeing it but
coming to the conclusion that man is
different from the Beast and the final
analysis is to differentiate
himself
also also the Lord these animals like
doing an inventory the Lord except it's
that that's in the second creation where
he's not the Lord over all the animals
he's also part
of and he's recognizing that he's part
of it too
right yes this is a grammatical
question okay
then that's the right to me the words
look like I don't have a good answer for
you that's my was never uh all right
that's interesting I'll look into
it
have to
think what I'm
sorry all right I'll have to look sh why
is it why is it in the C I'll I'll try
to find out
yes beautiful combination
of figuring out why there are the
two ways of stating it at the beginning
one time then another time and then you
think about it and get it just but the
question would be if this was a book
that was being presented to an
editor the editor might say you know I
think it might be better if you put both
of those into one so people wouldn't
have to figure it out would know
immediately all right he's asking an
interesting question which I think has
to do with Torah in general
which
is an editor looking at this text where
we have these two different versions of
man might have said you don't need the
two versions put it in one but if that
would have happened then what we learn
today we would not have learned you see
the fact is the point is that the Torah
is written in a way that is meant to be
exploit it's it it it these questions
that we raise are questions that are
meant to be raised and if you don't have
them raised you're not going to find out
the answers to those need we're
challenging you need a thumb yes the
challenge is the challenge is to look at
the text as it is and say why is it
written that way and why and and once
you see why it's written that way and to
raise the question then you're able to
find the answer you don't raise the
question in the first place and you'll
never find the answer
yes
in other words so his relationship with
Hashem that's very beautiful it's not
it's not what I would
callot it's a a nice thought but but
shot is that he's placed
in referring to ganen now why that's in
the female I don't know I'd have to
think about that yes there a
words so this
is
and right it
says kind ofing he needs help he needs
help in that it could be it could be
could be that's that's nice all right
yes I just I we once learned about the
lonely man but he had a name also for
the second cre The Majestic and Majestic
and Redemptive Redemptive Redemptive
thank you I forgot was
Andes okay ladies and gentlemen thank
you very much
