we then headed to the panjir valley
which houses the panjir river and is
considered to be one of the most
militarily strategic areas in
afghanistan due to its rough terrain and
the surrounding mountains in the 1980s
and 90s a commander named ahmed shah
masood and his fighters located in the
pangaea valley were successfully able to
fight off the soviets and then the
taliban in late 2001 masood was
assassinated by al-qaeda terrorists only
two days before the september 11th
attacks he was later named afghanistan's
national hero
we were now on the way to meet some of
masood's men who are known as the
mujahideen of the northern alliance who
successfully fought off the invading
soviets and the taliban

valley
where pretty much everybody over the age
of 40 or 50 is a
jahidi
i'm saying it right
it's a hard word to say for americans
and uh hopefully we're gonna go meet
some people now who fought against the
russians and against the taliban
so i'm here in panjir and we are with
some wonderful people uh mujahideen who
have fought against the the russians and
against the taliban these are people who
fight for freedom
and make sure that when their rights are
infringed in their country
that uh their rights get restored so i
really appreciate what all these people
have done
and uh thank you all
thank you
okay so we are approaching the mausoleum
the tomb of uh masood who
was one of the leaders of the northern
alliance
fought against the russians and the
taliban
there he is
aside from the beautiful scenery there
were also a few old soviet tanks on
display from when the soviets tried
unsuccessfully to conquer the pangaea
valley it's such a beautiful area
the nature is unbelievable here
untouched pure
god bless afghanistan
it's really really
like you know you grow up with so many
stereotypes and things that you've heard
in the media and then
just come here and
you see that most of what you've seen is
not
not correct
really beautiful country beautiful
people
beautiful hospitality
my mind is blown
we then got back into our car and rushed
to kabul airport because we had a flight
to catch but i'll tell you all about
that in the next episode
