save lives everything we do is are free now we have an average of six emergencies every minute we build a bomb shelter underground same dispatch ready to go in a ballistic missile protection Center that's a Texas idea good morning from the beautiful city of Jerusalem in the land of Israel I am going to meet somebody today who has saved thousands of lives one of the most influential people in the entire world in the industry of saving lives you're not going to want to miss this one good morning good morning this is oral Rosenfeld she is social media and uh media manager for hatsala and what are we doing today we're gonna meet the super awesome Ellie Beer and uh see a bunch of that's all stuff okay let's do it let's go outside it's worth it if I need medical attention at the top uh there's gonna be someone who's very qualified to help Shalom hello hello welcome thank you good morning to see you finally to meet you outside of the screen see it likewise thank you so much for having me I hope it wasn't too uh too much of a schlep can you tell me a little bit about yourself that's the guy who was trying to save a few people my name is Ellie Beer right and I'm the founder of United hatsella and I'm very proud to be part of this organization just came back last night from Ukraine I know this is your type of trips that you do traveling into war zones and I went to see the work that our volunteers are doing there so I'm a United hatsella with sugar you'll learn more about the Michigan I want to show you why you have to walk up 65 steps to get to my home okay and I want to share with you yeah it's expensive when I'm here I spend time outside here just looking at Jerusalem which is the capital of Israel and I love its place look at this view this is the literacy 360 degrees after Ramallah and the Dead Sea is above there the french hill and it's uh this is where I spent my time and think about what I could do next to help United okay okay let's go and I'm going to show you around I heard you're not afraid driving in the back of an Ambu cycle do you have a helmet for me what do you need a helmet come on you went through War zones you went through crazy places you need a helmet of course they have I have a strimel for you you're gonna have to explain what a strangle is but I have a helmet okay cool but look I see the view of Jerusalem and I know when they have an emergency somewhere there in that neighborhood and an ambulance has to go through that traffic that poor person is gonna who's not breathing I'll have a hard time surviving if a volunteer doesn't show up before on a motorcycle and on an enemy cycle and that's the idea of United nutsella having people everywhere spread around so when they traffic like this happens ambulances get stuck they can't go anywhere and uh people dying waiting for ambulances more people die waiting for ambulances around the world and any disease you can imagine really yes people die every day from simple cardiac arrest from simple cardiac sorry Cardiac Arrest is not simple but it's simple to save someone with a cardiac arrest if you get there in under two minutes with a defibrillator you have a 90 chance of saving that person today in the world average of three percent are saved from cardiac arrest wow and that's like that's such a sad statistic because it's like as you say it's like totally preventable think about a child choking I use that all the time or someone choking in a restaurant who's going to save that person choking only if someone nearby knows to do the Heimlich right otherwise this person is dead because the time the ambulance arrives he's brain damage right so the idea of United hot salad is so incredible I train people like you people like me I train people everywhere to just be on call paramedics or EMTs and they are doing the day-to-day you could be busy with your traveling you could be busy with your filming and all of a sudden you have an opportunity to save someone's life I promise you just knowing you for a few minutes you will stop your interview and run to save that person yeah I would that's the idea and you have we give every single volunteer and I'll show you soon when we go our headquarters every single volunteer virus carries one of these devices which we know where everyone is we actually know where you are we know we follow you it's his our way of communications we're like uber for life saving and for free and you were doing it before Uber Uber has a lot to learn from us okay so like if you could sit down with the CEO of uber you could you could teach them a lot I would tell him I'm sorry I feel bad for him he never built any project that saves lives he made a lot of money from transporting people to the airports right but and it's a great job that he did but actually I think United outside was the first Uber in the world to save people's lives 30 years ago wow so this technology was available 30 years ago with GPS no we used to use scanners and pagers we used to find ways we always were first in technology because we realized in order to save someone you need to have Fast Response it's all about getting the communications devices getting the transportation getting to train people and as technology started coming out we actually built the first Uber technology is 2005. before iPhone we had it on Java systems that we created because GPS was just coming out on phones we said if GPS is on a phone why can't we can locate the closest paramedic heavy emergency and people thought like crazy when you talk about privacy how are you going to track people I said people need to be saved and if you track someone you could save their lives and that's how we started and I'm going to show you you're going to be quite surprised to see some of our uh technologies that we use today to get to the patients so your whole life's mission of saving lives and I noticed that you're carrying a gun can you explain how those two work together and why you're carrying a weapon so this weapon is actually to save lives okay and uh unfortunately we are living in very difficult times in Israel and it started when I was a child seeing a bus blow up I couldn't stop it then but sometimes I get to emergency when I see someone attacked by a terrorist and the terrorists might still be there alive and want to kill me or kill anyone else I'm carrying this not for fun I'm carrying this God forbid if I have to save someone's life and someone who wants to kill people out there and I have to use this to protect myself and to protect others safety comes first right unfortunately in Israel you see sometimes we get the emergencies and the terrorists are still alive because we get this so quick and we have to use weapons to stop this terrorist so has there ever been a case where a hotel volunteer stopped a terrorist with a weapon many times really have you ever used yours personally I had to use it for protection but many years ago an event but uh thank God other people were able to do the job and I I'm not happy when we have to use a gun and we had situation where volunteers use guns we're not gun freaks we're not promoting guns but these are protections for ourselves we're going into dangerous areas by the way we go out to save we save Arabs we save Jews we have everyone right so it could be a terrorist who doesn't care who he's killing he could kill an Arab too he doesn't care a terrorist has in his mind to to put scare in the people the kill he knows he can't destroy the country but he knows he can scare people and when we come we're there to protect the people and the first thing we have to do is make sure that no one there was still could do harm and do damage and kill so we carry this and we're not carrying it really for anything else but protection of the people and ourselves okay I think this is something that every EMP and paramedic would sell if they need it because of what the deal they live in certain places unfortunately more and more places in Israel you need this to protect yourself because terrorism is on the rise now um we are we are licensed to give our volunteers a gun permit so they could carry it this is not like in uh Florida or Texas not everyone could just walk into Walmart and buy a gun you need a license they have to supervise who's getting it you have to get doctor's evaluation about your mental health and make sure that you're stable to get a gun but you need to get a permit for it and the United States is one of the organizations in Israel who could give one for what reason I mean our volunteers run into emergencies while terrorists are still shooting or while Rockets are flying from the sky they need to protect themselves you need to protect themselves that's what I just said I mean this is this is not for fun actually it's quite a burden because it hurts your back after a while yeah yeah because you know it's you're not you know so it's another you get another one on the other side it balances it out that's a Texas idea so we are heading to the atala office and Ellie's gonna give me a ride on a motorcycle I've never been on one before going on an mu cycle in Jerusalem that's something everyone in the world want to do it I hope so okay let's do this homie I will take you on a ride with the new type of vehicle we have okay it's called the mini lens this is another type this is for paramedics to go on emergency calls with more medical supplies it's tiny I hope we can fit together yeah it might be an issue I'm a big guy I'm a big guy too I'm going to have suamo and so um no actually I'm gonna diet so I'm gonna have only the inside of this and uh it's electric so it's great so come join me [Music] okay so we're here in this little what's it called again mini Lance mini lens tiny car never been in a vehicle so small it's a little bit claustrophobic would you go on like a road trip across America with this I would probably not but maybe someone donates a lot of money to that sella I would do that you want to do it with this you and me yes someone donates a lot of money I would do anything so very quickly can you run me through how and why you started the organization I was a child growing up in Jerusalem I was six years old I was coming back from uh school Friday afternoon beautiful day standing next to the bus stop and all of a sudden when the bus stop it blew up that'll terrorist attack on the bus many people were killed and injured and I was there on the floor seeing people near me screaming for help and I didn't know what to do of course I was too young I just ran away from there and I I left everyone there I couldn't help and that haunted me for many years the the thought of people needed help I couldn't help and I remember waiting you know for help also and and people were just screaming and no one was there no ambulances were no there so I decided when I grew up I'm going to be a I'm going to be a doctor and help people and that pushed me towards the medicine world and then when I was 15 years old I saw this opportunity they had a sign on the tree saying you could become a lifesaver on an ambulance and that's what I was dreaming for saving a life and I went to volunteer in an ambulance in Jerusalem after learning CPR learning how to do everything and I was a volunteer for a year and a half I used to write down every emergency when we received it and when we arrived average response time was 17 minutes and it drove me crazy we always get there a few seconds or a few minutes too late to emergencies that we need to make a difference and then we had a seven-year-old boy who choked while he was eating lunch and his mother called for help and we were the first ambulance to arrive 21 minutes after the emergency happened and we tried everything to save him and also the doctor runs into the house he saw the ambulance Park and he says I'm an extra neighbor and he came to help us and for 40 minutes we were working on his child and after 40 minutes the doctor says nothing else we could do just bring a sheet to cover him and that moment was the worst moment of my life when I saw a child seven years old die waiting for us to save him while a doctor was in his house he didn't even know emergency is happening nearby that moment it was the worst moment of my life till then 16 16 and a half years old I realized we could make a difference if we get response coming before ambulances and I actually got my friends together and they all got excited let's start responding to emergencies before the ambulance let's let's respond not as an ambulance crew before an ambulance crew so I went over to the ambulance organization to try convincing them to to work with us and share information of emergencies coming and of course they said no they didn't want to hear about it they said someone calls for help they must get an ambulance we can't just send it randomly to people um we don't know where they are you know responsibility insurance so I was stuck what do I do now how do I get medical information routed to me so I decided to use Israeli innovation our best Innovation we ever did would call it's called hutzpah and uh is really what led to United at cell and I bought police scanners in American Radio Shack we bought some police scanners in that's how we started knowing about information of people needed help so you would basically listen in on these scanners and when you heard something in your area you'd run over there with your friends and try to help out not waiting for anyone else to come exactly I realized that we could have volunteers respond immediately to calls by listening into the cause dispatched and I said if we get motorcycles you just see motorcycles passing us to deliver pizza and I always said it to my friends I said if I ever choke and ambulance will never come fast enough to save me so I'll call for pizza someone will come with a pizza delivery motorcycle and save my life and then I decided to create these motorcycles instead of delivering pizza it will deliver volunteers with with medical equipment and we call it an Ambi cycle and that's how we started with some clitspa some radio communication devices this CB it was called scanners and uh some motorcycles and uh I got more and more volunteers to get hooked up to the idea started with 15 volunteers and now we are almost six and a half thousand so this is a traditional uh response vehicle rapid response vehicle it has everything in ambulance has the size of our stretcher leagues we put in communities everywhere these are lights and sirens and they could actually respond to emergencies from Indian communities what happens in the cities itself what happens when you're in a city and they have very bad traffic that's when the Envy cyclists come in place and volunteers are with it 24 7 they take you with their volunteers are always with their area Cycles and when an emergency happens they jump on them put on the siren and they get there in 90 seconds amazing bicycles these are for volunteers who can't drive motorcycles they don't have a proper license or some places are so narrow in Jerusalem that he can't even drive with a motorcycle they're getting bicycles so this has all the medical supplies inside this and this Ambi bike Electric you could actually pick it up if you have steps and stuff motorcycle you can't do that so this is another type of vehicle then I'll show you another vehicle this one this is called the mini lens this is a mini Lance this is all electric all electric all the medical equipments here in the back you can see here you have more equipment here in the back two medical packs two defibrillators and volunteers go out to emergencies just yesterday they saved someone here in Jerusalem from a shooting uh they had here Soldier young guy was shot by a terrorist volunteers were there with this little vehicle able to maneuver inside and get there and save this person's life amazing these guys came here as a young volunteer and he really his life's changed my life changed it was nothing that he can't do no one he cannot save when I know if I need to save some of that he's not going to fight for his life and I have all the types alone parents I have men I have women I have Christians and Jews everyone together saving lives and uh that's really exciting for me to be here in the building and show you you're gonna love this okay so we're heading into the office right now this is the office this is the headquarters of the whole operations in Israel our Command Center 9-1-1 we don't listen to walkie-talkies like we used to now they call you they call us or they call ambulances that we get the calls to them happily most of the time and we have guys who started here Young and now they are leaders in the organizations and uh We've we build leadership and that's a beautiful part so come in with me all right all right so we're going here we're going to start from going straight into the heart of the organization which is our 911 Command Center okay this place doesn't stop working 24 7 a day it actually works here um uh 365 days a year this place is operating making sure people in Israel are safe okay oh it is so here um we're gonna go see it from inside the nice part about this every single person who answers phones here is professional EMP on the road he's on the field so they know how to answer a phone if someone is not not well or needs help so they can actually get emergency help immediately and one of the nice things about it we want to make sure we do it properly we follow our volunteers procedures the whole time we see literally what they're doing from here and we have doctors who are looking over everything they're doing the procedures the protocols that are doing the processing we want to make sure because the first few minutes are the most critical in the whole operations so are you ready to go in here yeah let's go all right here we need a special permit all right [Music] foreign [Music] I got a text message right away immediately and I get the text message I press this and I'll show you something interesting I just I called for my phone for help I'm on the street my location please point where I am and then I actually the dispatch would see everything I might go that's going around me so just uh just to be clear so you guys don't follow them they immediately get a link where they can flip if they consent to it once they click the link you are live streaming from their phone straight into the Dispatch Center and the disaster can see what's going on so it helps you give a guidance for the EMTs that are coming we can see exactly sometimes people give wrong addresses on the highway they don't know where they are they don't know to explain where they are and we could see the situation we could tell the people itself what to do it's a paramedic he can tell the person stops we delivered babies this way tell the mother what to do tell the husband what to do for his life Wow first time he never delivered a baby but we explained what to do because they were middle of nowhere right and it takes time and you're streaming right now onto the screen of Dispatch Center and I'm there on your screen and it takes two seconds it takes two seconds to connect and you don't need an app you don't need anything we take over your phone so far um wow and this is one little technology we have a lot more to show but you know that's how it's all about innovation and uh so I'm going to show you now you can also text you sometimes you you can't hear that they can't hear so I could say how are you you know I could spell I could I could I could um get text back from the dispatch they see what I just sent him so I'm dispatching my text right so the dispatcher can actually communicate we have a lot of people who don't have they have hearing problems they can't communicate yeah they use text here we are thinking a lot of ways of how to make it easier for people to get help and I don't know if I mentioned everything we do is for free everything we do is for free every emergency we treat is a hundred percent free no one has to hang out and that's a beautiful thing we're the only emergency services in Israel go get pre-service okay every minute now we have an average of six emergencies every minute because this is a peak of non-emergency fires we have fires here we have chest pains we have someone who's very scared that's streaming from some kind of theater they have panic attack panic attack um I see we have here A Serious injury from a car accident this is all happening in all around the country we are servicing everyone we even have here but John Arab cities Jewish cities and we have all gears everywhere so we can spread it around and sometimes you can see uh Jewish Hasidic volunteer with the payus that you have that lives in the Jewish uh Community but he gets the call because he's the closest we see every volunteer went on and he jumps he drives into an Arab town thank you that's our ambulance teams working on the field um and they give us tremendous respect tremendous respect [Applause] it's a busy place foreign [Music] you literally give your life over to us so this is your job 24 7. I mean you have to have a job otherwise is to make a living you have to go to do your hobbies and do everything else but you're you're under our control around the clock so when we have something for you to do we alert you and you stop everything you do and you jump with it so these volunteers now they're moving around this is in Jerusalem look at this that's why we get here in Jerusalem that's why in Jerusalem we get there in 90 seconds if a response time of 90 seconds 90 seconds in Jerusalem and we're getting even faster because there'll be more volunteers joining there so every one of these people are ready to go this person's ready they're all ready to go to emergency are any of them on calls that you can see like right now they have a lot of them on call in treating emergencies we can see them so once they're on call they go off the screen yeah these are all people available to others we probably have another 100 or doing calls now because we have in Jerusalem we have close to um we have around around 600 calls a day that we have in Jerusalem and 600. so they're always busy running around and um how fast our volunteers are getting the alerts on the minute some calls it takes less than seven seconds while they get it on their phone their emergency call for the volunteers so right here at the number 693 on the screen from one channel a volunteer gets the call so our goal is to make sure that every single volunteer is on call 24 7 and the and the calls are properly routed to the app it's like an Uber app that every the closest Five Elements here is getting alert immediately and our stats is very important for us to know if we're doing okay we need to work harder and if God forbid this number goes up over 10 seconds we know something is wrong we want to get it down we want to go down to the green for four seconds so the cap starts getting the information so differently than 9-1-1 systems around the world when you get when 9-1-1 gets a call they start taking a lot of information and only after information they dispatch so if you know how it works you could be three four minutes on the phone or two minutes on the phone until they dispatch a unit we don't we the first thing we ask is what's your phone number we take the phone number second thing is what's your address once we know the address we send it out without knowing what his emergency is to the volunteers so once you have an address someone is already on the way yes and then ask questions later do first ask questions later that's our way and that's what we do because and it's it's amazing and then we have another really emergency every single day every single day we have people sponsoring the day of Lifestyle so this was May 10th family sponsored and honor of Annie Myers um the day of near the airport and he volunteers here he volunteers on the field to save lives but he has an incredible story he's in the Olympics soccer Olympics representing Israel one of the top guys in the country for soccer but he plays with one real leg and one fake leg [Music] and he actually is runs to emergencies faster than Iowa he actually does that he runs faster than I run wow and uh he Volunteers in many ways uh saving lives he's a medic so he goes he doesn't go on a motorcycle goes in his own private car when someone died for Me loses a limb in a car accident he knows what it means to lose a win he lost it in a tragic way so he goes to show them his success in the Olympics he shows him his soccer soccer games how he does so well and he motivates them that everyone even if you lose a life after losing him wow I love Ellie hello and he's one of my guys he's one of six and a half thousand six and a half thousand volunteers so this whole room that we see here is operating around around the year and never stops the only time it does stop is when we have missile attacks coming in from Gaza which could happen um or God forbid for Legoland from the from the 11th Avenue so we always have to be prepared so we build a bomb shelter underground same dispatch ready to go in a ballistic missile protection Center and it's also against chemical and biological attacks because we had threats before so it's totally airtight crazy Saddam taught us that it could happen so it's totally safe on the ground so we could protect Israel even during even during a missile attack let's go all right here we go for two years this shuts down this is a very thick ceiling all metal and um and concrete right here [Music] this this place is ready to go we have the same Command Center like up on top and we the Overflow of emergencies come here but if God forbid we have a situation where we need to go down on the ground we're ready to go and you actually see um the same same stuff we have on the top um we also help a lot of other situations here like God forbid a disaster happens in the world and we need to help them we do it from here it just gives us more emergency desks and you see here a lot of things we did during Corona helping elderly people um humanitarian help was done through this day people call us for for anything people didn't know who to call you know you can't call the police to ask them to come help you and change the world an old lady has no one had a lockdown in Israel because of coven he called United fella we send volunteers to help them or anything for shopping for for basic things it was unbelievable what was all going through here wow so we're gonna go on a motorcycle ride and we have to change into the property here this is not uh this is fancy we're not uh not safe we're gonna switch uh this stuff whatever sooner for you I don't think it's gonna fit yeah we have a bigger one that's good I think I'm gonna have to breathe ammo this is extra small extra small yeah all right thank you in your mind let me see if this is me all all orange today I feel all these protective plates on my back on my arms this is what we wear every day we had a volunteer who was killed at a very bad accident on the way to save someone wow here in Jerusalem next to the Waldorf Hotel africadassi that night was one of the worst nights I ever had getting a phone call at three o'clock in the morning that one of the volunteers went to safes that were slipped and a taxi a mistake didn't see him and crashed into him and um he left three kids dolphins and he was a fighter for the country he was Fighter for the people so we upgraded all our safety measures and we don't know how I developed here not to drive one of these animal Cycles we are not wearing protective gear [Music] the helmet for you they have mics and Thunder no okay I never put it on someone else's face with face I have to make sure not to destroy the pairs it's kind of very slow yeah it's supposed to be this way okay good I feel like my ears bent off I'm like dude okay that's better okay now we have to make it a little bigger the options oh good okay looking good yeah yeah you can
