Heat. Heat.
a once in 20 year experience. Welcome
everybody to our Shabbas Dasha around
the world. This
Shabbat the rabbis will give their
Shabbat dashas. It's one of the two
times a year that customary throughout
Kla Israel. No matter what circumstances
and what type of congregation it was,
people would gather to learn with their
rabbi. One being of course Shabashua the
week before
uh the weekend before Kipper and one
before and the week before the seder.
But because the seder is mishabas this
year meaning is falling on shabas. So
it's backed up until this shabas
throughout the world uh because it's too
late to share the pes and thoughts of
pes and shas about give you the laws
about what to do. So what I want to do
is just point out
um several three different things that
are really really needed for this pes
above all others. So you could say that
the is
called. Why is this PES different than
all other PES? It's not going to happen
again. Breathe a sigh of relief for 20
years. Now, what's interesting about
this is that the last time that happened
where there was a full 20-year break
um was in a very critical time period in
Israeli history, in world history for
the Jewish people, 1954 to
1974. We know what happened in those 20
years. You had three major major wars of
expansion, you know, contraction and
expansion of Eric Israel. Eric Israel
was front and center in those 20 years.
And the question was who
will who will will will Israel be able
to expand themselves on their on their
land, defend themselves and survive
basically. So who knows what these next
20 years are going to bring. First I
want to start with the braha. The braha
to you is and for all those in need of
so many Yeshua. And our heart goes out
to the entire Brooklyn Jewish community
and the terrible terrible tragedy that
took place this week where where a a
young mother on her way to shul with
children. It's it's not something
fathomable that a human mind can grasp.
how they were killed uh in a tragic car
accident and a negligent driver with a
terrible uh driving history which is I
call this a lack of law
enforcement know are that you have to
enforce denim and when there's dangers
to a community Jew or non-Jew these
people should not be allowed to uh
operate freely we have adnauseium
promoted individual rights over the rule
of law and over the welfare of society.
This is a major correction if anything
at all underscores this horrible avla
that's gone on in our in our time and
particularly I would say in the last
decade or two
decades the failure of law rule of law
is one of the essential seven mitzvah of
Noah of Noahides meaning for all
humankind and here it failed and the
cost was unfathomable.
This woman had whoever was the driver,
Nebach, she had a record that indicated
that she was a lifethreatening hazard on
the road many many many times over and
she she had $10,000 worth of fines
against her driving and no one took away
her license. And what that means is that
there was a failure to um provide
protection and uh and there were there
were innocent victims. And this has been
the story of Kalisrael in this in this
uh remarkable remarkable last couple of
years and throughout our history really.
Pes is called Le Shimoreim, a night of
watching. And we
therefore send out our
consolations to the community where they
suffered this terrible tragedy in Ocean
Parkway and uh not far from the Tarvadas
where I learned and got smika from my
holy rabbi of a
palaka who was an
ish and a man of law of respect and
utter dignity.
for human life and this was a breach of
the dignity of life due to law
enforcement.
Hashem and may that give strength to
everybody in the world not only for the
Jewish people but for everybody to clamp
down on the various violations of law
and terror. Terror has run a muk in our
time and it has gone largely unchecked.
Now, thank God we have a president in
the United States who's giving strength
really almost forcing the hand of the
prime minister of Israel to demand an
end to the terror terror terrorization
of uh terrorizing of the population of
Israel at the hands of our vicious and
uh uh you know uh enemies will stop
nothing at death you know they'll go
till the death and that's what we're up
against very very strange very
unusual and we need protection. So this
pes should be
leurim le shimuram the last time it was
20-year gap between erra of shabas pes
to ar shabas pes three Israeli wars 56
673 those were times of great divine
intervention and we needed great
protection and we saw great yeshuos
mitem this period should also do it so
we have to grab this opportunity of this
unique pesak to give us the I would call
it the perspective the energy the
message that's going to gird our loins
for the year ahead and for the years
ahead and who knows where we will be. So
the brah I want to give to everybody is
that we should all be alive and well in
20 years. How about that? All your
children all your grandchildren if
you're up to 100 years old I give you a
braha that you will be at the next seder
that falls out on m shabas where we're
going to do the strange thing of yak
nahaz. We're going to make Abdullah in
the in the first
cup. It's strange.
Kdesh abdullah
and all right. Everybody should be
there. I don't care if you're 100 years
old. My dad had just missed the cut. He
would have been 101 this pes and he
passed away in his hundth year. And I
would have said to him, "Dad, you're
going to be here for the next seder and
we're all going to be in the next seder
and you shall kesh." And that's what
we're hoping for. So stay let's stay
alert and alive. Let's get geared up now
to be ready and tell everybody about
what we did 20 years ago when Arab kalio
and I don't say this lightly because
even in the garra itself in the sakim
itself says that there were the great
rabbis in there were periods in which
there were transition between the
anesola the great rabbis of the second
temple era of the early second temple
era and the ones in the later second
pesh era including hil and shama and so
on as outlined in
Perios. But the Benerra family came to
Argusel from Bavl. They came from the
original diaspora and they were very
knowledgeable and they were the
teachers and later Hill came and
supplanted them. But in the meantime,
Benabra did not know what to do, how to
conduct and pasin for the Jewish people
who were going to bring carbon pes and
shabas. This rare 20-year thing, they're
going to actually have to seemingly
violate Shabas to Sheff the carbon pes.
It's outrageous. We touched upon this in
last year, but I want to frame this more
carefully and more fully and and more
meaningfully.
It's outrageous the idea that shabas
should be
violated for a personal carbon like
carbon pes. There are no personal
cabonas allowed on any shabas ever in
the bdash except one. Carbon pes is
essentially a carbon schlumin a
personalized carbon that you eat. The
coine is not eating it or not even
eating part of it. It's all yours to eat
and you must eat it. The
brisker rav and all the raani brisk
point out that who specialize in kim you
know why because was so wanting to be
the cohain of the future he wanted to
see the bish built he wanted to see
Israel developed to the to the pla to
the place of survival that he predicted
coming in in in the dire dark moments of
the early 30s and he said we've got to
start preparing really tless
Therefore, he set up the col the
famous which everybody knows that the
brisk specialize in kachum and all theum
of the
brisk and others uh and the yeshivas
themselves regularly learn the
etc all the all the sections of kajim
why so that they be able to sit in the b
mikdash and pask in shilus about the
carbon bonos themselves. There's so much
detail. There's so much to know. There's
so many things that can go wrong. But
one of the clear details is that no
individual carbonos will ever be offered
ever in the B mikdash. Okay? I'm not
talking about by the the the Messiah
himself. We had in this past week's ha
Torah about the Nasi meaning the
Messiah, how he's going to bring
carbonos and so on, but he's not his own
person. He's like a collective person of
theore. here is simply pes is like a
schlamim in fact so much so that you can
they're almost indispensable if you
don't use something for a pes it doesn't
work out you can use it for a
schlamim and uh so how could it be how
could it be that that this in the
villicious carbon the briskers pointed
out that the mitzvah of most
carbonos if there's a portion that must
be eaten by the kohanim is that it be
eaten in other words they don't have a
specific mitzvah for this coane that
cohane. It doesn't really matter which
cohane as long as a qualified cohane
eats it because the subject is the
carbon itself. The carbon uh must be
eaten. It's just the focus is on the
carbon not on you not on the individual
cohes is the one carbon in which the
mitzvah is that we eat it. You follow
the mitzvah is not on the item on the
carbon pes on on the car on the carbon
pes it's on me I have a to
eat right unbelievable so you see how
personalized a carbon it is me it's mine
this no carbon belongs to any coane it
belongs to a coane whichever coin it is
but carbon pesak is totally mine I
better eat my kazayas and if I can't eat
my kazayas I can't bring a carbon pesa
why do you care just say listen I don't
feel good you eat
What is does that work? No, it doesn't
work. You can't
say I I'll wave. I'll pass on this. No,
you you can't if you you cannot pass on
it. You have to eat your kazayas in
order to fill the m. Okay. Two kaz. So
now so then we have to understand what
actually happened was that this occasion
is very is very rare rare and mystifying
in many ways. So the Gmorrah
says listen to
this the leaders of the Jewish people
right before
hill on this rare occasion again for us
it could be once in 20 years for them it
could have been once in 20 years or
maybe
more they didn't even know the prime
should pace overrule
shabas again because I what I just said
it's essentially a personal carbon how
could it how could it over and we're
going to you have to deal with the more
basic question itself how could any
carbon be shabas the carbonos were
brought in the b mikdash we we sing them
and we read them every shabas and
every
how as we proved last week
parasel mohea outlines all of all the 39
Mahos
and it's impossible to even comprehend
how anything related to the Mishkun
should override Chabas. We learn the 39
laws of of Chabas from the building of
the Mishkun and we suppress them. We
don't we say don't do it. We learn for
example that is one of the 39. How could
you bring a carp on this poor Cohen you
know Cohen I just feel I feel for the
Cohen. He's he's the leader. He's the
teacher. He's the Reba. He's the role
model. He's trying to be so big sadic
and d for everybody and help everybody
and and encourage them to keep shabas.
And then he goes for his twoe job in the
B mikdash or yontiff and they say to him
so what did you do there
rabbi? Uh shabas what did you do on
shabas? There was nothing to do right.
Well actually I was kind of busy. What
do you mean rabbi? Didn't you keep
shabas? He goes yeah I I definitely kept
shabas. In
fact, of course, I catch Shabas in the
BA mdash. We some dabons are not
necessary because we're not worried that
the kohanim will will make a mistake and
come to a bigger violation. So some of
that their abundance are
relaxed and the Mishna at the end of
Shabas gives examples of
this excuse me
not gives examples of this like for
example repairing a string of of the
it's in
um it's repairing a strings of the
instruments you can't do that in outside
the bas
mikdash it's less less less strict we're
not go we're not trying to avoid
uh these sort of uh mistakes by issuing
gazer to we're more relaxed about that
because we trust the so rabbi what did
you do there? Oh well actually I was
honored to bring the carbon tummy carbon
rabbi what do you mean carbon? What kind
of carbon? He was it something that was
prepared before Shabas? Uh no actually I
had to do it on Shabas morning. What did
you do? Well I slaughtered it. I I
received the blood and I sprinkled it on
the misbeak and you know I burnt the
parts that were supposed to be burnt.
You know Ola, that's what we do on
Chavez. Rabbi, how could you? In my
entire life, I would never ever violate
Chabas by picking up a knife and
slaughtering an animal. You taught me
that, didn't you, Rabbi? Yes, of course.
But what do you mean but? I You tell me
to even be strict. I come to you every
time with the biggest the biggest shilas
of of of muka and and hana and
everything to just honor the shabas
rabbi we've studied for 20 years
together how could you do
this do you understand the dilemma here
it's a
dilemma when every Jew in the entire
Israel is asked to come to the bas case
I make and himself slaughtered
animal so didn't know what to do now
what their suffic was is a good question
because everybody knows that you have to
bring a carbon pes on
chabas so what were they worried about
what was their concern were did they
really wonder whether maybe they were
wondering whether they should make a
zera just like you don't blow chauffeur
on chabas maybe they didn't want they
want to make a not to bring karpes on
chabas because of shemayeno you're going
to bring a knife you're going to carry
the animal whatever it is maybe it was
just what like that type of
consideration same reason why don't we
migill on chabas we don't take a lull on
chabas even though it's the risa because
we want to protect chabas chabas needs
needs protection so maybe we should just
cancel carbon pes we'll do you know or
something else or whatever we might do
so they came and
and they didn't know
Is there anybody out there? Listen to
this. They're talking to the common
folk. Does anybody remember like 20
years before, you know, you were young
people, younger, you know, we weren't we
weren't necessarily here and what did
they used to do?
Soalian. Oh wait, I have to make a
correction here. Hill preceded them
coming up from Bavl, right? And then
came before the rebies of of of Hill and
Shamai as it's as of course it's
structured in the first perk of
Perkyavos Schmai
uh
were prior to Hill and Shami and they
ruled that back in those days this is
now
later after Hill and
Shami but but still in the time of the
Ba Mdash
right and Uh that's what they
pasined. Now everybody asks how can they
forget here's a a simple thing in the
second year the second pes that is ever
did came out on shabas according
to
z second p ever done by the Jewish
people. It says like this.
Mishkan and the and the on this says
based on
says the kahuna the Rashi quotes the
seven crowns of that unique roesh where
the Mishk was was put up was also shabas
and comes out that on the 14th day would
also be shab you do the calendar so we
know it's going to be the same day
714. So it had to be that in that year
Pes the carbon pes was brought by the
entire Jewish people on the 14th. It
says it in the Torah. You can just
deduce it from the from the numbers. If
so
therefore how could they have forgotten
such a thing? It's like an open
p. So they
say various answers. The
meshma said something
interesting. I I don't want to go into
it too much here. I don't think it's the
um um the place, but they had a quite a
lengthy discussion. Maybe we don't need
everybody to do the pesak. Maybe we can
just have one person do a do a kind of
pesak for everybody. Kind of like a
carbon seabore of sorts. And uh and that
was the thing. In addition, they didn't
even know how you're going to get the
knife to the bases mikdash. How you
going to get the knife to the basa
mdash? They
say, he says, go look what the people
did. There's definitely old-timers here
who maybe experienced one or two pes or
five
pesos. And how did they get their knife
there? Well, the little lamb, they could
lead. They could You're not supposed to
even lead it, but you could uh you could
walk it there, you know, push it. Not
supposed to push it, but you walk walk
it there a little bit. And I could
that's not a problem, but how you going
to get the knife there? So, they looked
out and they saw the old folks putting
the knife and the head of the animal
between in the hair that grows on its
head and the wool on its head. See the
Jewish people knew indigenously that
pesaf there was a way to bring the
carbon pes and to get around all the
shabas problems minimizing the shabas
damage but what about the effectual
carbon itself
okay so so there's two levels of
problems one problem which is practical
for us even in our days and then there's
problems that were relevant in the bas
mikdash comes and then there's the
philosophical question of why would
hashem allow this. Why didn't Hashem
design design the mitzvah this way? I
thought Shabas is more important than
everything.
Okay. All right. That's a setup
question. So the So look what happens
this year. I call it when Pes and Shabas
collide. It's a collision. It's a
head-on collision unfortunately. And we
got to move stuff. We move back the
tinusim from Shabas. You can't fast on
Shabas to
when it can be Friday. It's not great
time. So we do it Thursday. Okay, we
move it back. Search for KT can't be
done Friday night. So we push it back to
Thursday night. Beer, we're going to
burn it on Friday, a complete day early.
It doesn't make any sense. We was going
to be eating a ton of a ton
of we do that every year when we do the
search for KTS the night before and in
the morning we'll have KT take a
breakfast that's not such a big deal but
two days that's a lot and how do you get
rid of the KT on chabas you can't burn
anything on chabas how you supposed to
get rid of it which is why they say you
should buy only tiny little shabas rolls
which don't make crumbs they have these
like tmani breads that are very doughy
it's like a piece of dough
and it won't make any crumbs and you
could just eat it, you know, still a
hate. So there are two basic options for
how you could do your Shabas meals. The
Shabas meals get squished. Everything
gets squished, squzen, pushed. You
squeeze the Shabas day down into the
little morning hours, we morning hours
until, you know, like 10:30 when you
have to stop eating. I'm not going to
give you the exact time because I don't
know where you are, where you're going
to be. Check it out with your local
rabbi.
But we got to do two Shabas meals.
Shabas morning and Sha should all before
10:30 in the morning. How are you going
to do
that? So you got to dive in really early
so that you can have one meal then have
a significant
break 15 20 minutes half an hour and
then wash again for shalas and complete
everything and get rid of everything by
10:30. That's an early morning. Remember
Shabas learning shabas morning domining
is is like two hours minimum. So when
are you going to dab in? You're going to
dates. When is Nates? Nates is uh is
basically around um 6:30. So that means
you got to be in shul 5:30 5 you know
uh what I'm saying 5 you have to be in
shul not 5
5:45 5:45 Arab you know that's a tough
shabas 5:45 in the morning finishing at
7 10 7:15 wash make kdish take a break
learn something and then have a second
suda with your there's other there's
other uh options by the
um psalm and this was actually done by
me when I was a rabbi devotion side and
we wanted to make life easy for
everybody so we made a communal shabas
meal of pesalio pashabas on that early
morning and we served eggmat and that's
perfectly acceptable according to
ashkinazin we just have to finish eating
it's not in other words you don't have
to bring any kits or rolls don't bother
just use a box of egg matzah on chabas
this morning which is not you know
you're not supposed to eat egg mats on
chabas on pes because we don't know the
exact time it takes when once you add a
fluid other than water we know water and
flour is 18 minutes we don't know
exactly water and other when when it's
other ingredients fruit juices which is
what usually use or egg egg yolk uh
which is what egg matza really
represents or it may have some apple
juice in it or whatever it might be we
don't really know if that goes for a
full 18 minutes or hot. So maybe less
maybe it's maybe it's mitz in a minute.
We don't know. So don't eat it on pes
except if you're not well and you can't
eat regular matzah but otherwise but pes
get a box of egg matzah and solve your
problem that way. It all depends on your
temperament. If you can handle without
freaking out and having a heart attack
that there's actual hums in your home
that's fine. Then you can use the egg
matzah. If you can tolerate hummets,
okay, little rolls, whatever. You're not
going to be like Ice Mench then. Okay.
And what are you going to do with the
little bit of crumbs? Where are you
going to put them? Where are you going
to put them? You have to flush them down
the toilet. There's no other way. And
that's perfectly acceptable. And the
Shabas got Russia is a week early, which
is why I'm not giving it next Monday.
I'm giving it today. Everything is
pushed back. So you might say that
Shabaso gets
bullied by Pes all these things push
back but Shabas also pushes forward in
what way does Shabas push against Pesak
you can't prepare on Shabas for after
after Shabas so that means a lot of
things you might want to do for the
seder such as simple tasks setting a
table cooking preparing you could even
start the multi shabas And this is
counterintuitive because Pesak we want
the children to be awake. What are you
going to first start setting a table for
a half an hour an hour? You know how
long it takes to set a seder table with
all the accuchants and everything
beautiful. You know you normally we set
that in the in in the day early in the
day. I guess a solution might be to have
a two rooms you know like a separate
room in which you have your pesak uh
table laid out you know already before
you just go over there but most people
don't. You're going to be delaying the
start of the sedar plus the habda that
you've got to make in the kdish till
you're going to get to the is going to
be who knows what time that's really not
ideal in the spirit of
that now on top of everything they
changed the clock in Israel they used to
wait to change the clock till after till
after pes no more no more I don't know
if that's part of the protests
uh you know recent years
unfortunately pes was under the gun in
Israel in terms of individual rights you
can you should be able to have
peska things in your hospital room in
your hotel room in your army base notice
it's very interesting that above of all
the things that they were strict on it
was the army base that they were
strictest hospitals they were fighting
but when they came to the supreme court
of Israel and they asked them what on
army basis people don't want there are
Jerusalem there there are there are
Christians there there are Muslims there
and there are Jews
who be so careful although I like to
think they all are
but let them no not a crumb of on the
army bases to their credit and that's
because they say in the army you're
anyway nish mench and we talk about
individual
rights. If you're in the army, if you
can forget about your indo individual
rights, they got to be able to tell you
to go do things that you probably would
never dream of doing, endangering your
life and so on. And I put this out as a
prayer for all the soldiers that they
should be protected. And all the boys
that want to learn yeshiva should be
allowed to learn yeshiva and do their
mitzvah that way, including my own
children. And that's a a difficult
and and and and and confusing topic for
all of us who so dearly love this
country and so have Hakaratov for all
the things that the soldiers do and yet
do we want to sacrifice our sons on the
altar of uh you know uh IDF uh
principles which may not be consistent
with Torah principles. If a Posek were
consulted with every Shiloh in the
army might be a little different. I know
they're trying to build a halid brigade
brigade that uh that you know I mean of
course we have Hezer and they have
postkim they do their thing and and then
they're now going to be I so it's a work
in progress but bottom line is these are
heart- rendering decisions they're very
very difficult as a parent as a child as
a
Jew should help us so this
year this year with this unique year we
have to solve these problems problem. So
again
basically the things that can be pushed
back the fast of the bas
um
shabas preparations for the seder have
to be made all before shabas shabas
itself is going to push the seder
forward and make us not be able to do
anything on it and you're going to have
to make as part of part of the kdish and
that's the practical considerations and
you'll decide how you're going to do the
two pseudo shabas everybody should be
aware of these because you're not going
to confront them again for 20
But now let's go into deeper question
about the and about the
significance of why this was like this.
So there is a let me share with you
Aron from Dinsk
uh wrote a beautiful
um terrace explanation of why carbonas
and chabas let me share with you we
offered a couple of ideas. I'm going to
share with you a couple of
ideas. One that's very interesting and
very simple. Okay, let me give you the
simplest answer. Why are carbonos
seabore brought on chabas? Why is the
carbon pes brought on chabas? And for
that matter, what else do we do on
chabas that violates chabas obviously
and openly and we celebrate it openly
and that is brisma. Brisma is shabas is
how come? I mean, we could wait. Well,
let's wait a day. You know, usually we
don't want to violate Chabas. Why did it
come out that way? So, we all know that
there's one basic premise of why
something would be why Shabas would be
overruled, so to speak, or pushed aside
temporarily or for the moment or
partially, which is called doabas.
What's the one thing that we all know is
doabas? Help me out here.
What's the one thing that we all know
is right to save a life you got to
callah you get on the phone you callah
if you're a hard solo guy you get in
your car and you drive and you take him
to the hospital no
question so you could say you could take
that approach and say very simply there
are certain things about the Jewish
people that are considered nephesh
klali two of Those are the mitzvah of
brisma and
carbon. We say in part of the
seder we quote and we speak about the
two mitzvah when we're reading about the
the 10 plagues and and um the what
hashem did on the original
pit. Hashem said to
us you have two great that will empower
you to go out of even if you have no
other mitzvah to your name. And that was
the brisk meal that they performed,
right? And the dam pesaf that they put
on their on their portals and that they
carbon pes that they ate. When a Jew has
no merits, those two merits even
supersede shabas because they're nephesh
so to speak. I'm putting this in quotes
and I don't mean it. Just understand I'm
using it only as a metaphor as a
metaphor that Hashem decided that they
were neph that these overrode chabas.
Why?
Why? So now I'm going to tell you
something you might not realize and and
it it's a little bit shocking. It's
something that's commonly known but
maybe never think about it. I have to
make a excuse
me why are we allowed to save a life on
chabas? So you might say well a life a
life the most important thing is life
right it's not the reason that is given
by then say the following thing if you
think about it it's a shocker he
says har is far better that this
individual live and survive this shabas
and be alive to keep so many mother
shabasim for the rest of his life. If
the person perishes on
shabas there will be lack of observance
of shabas for all the years that they
might have been able to
survive. So what's the real reason we're
we're we're shabas for nephesh for
shabas's sake not for the Jews sake for
the shabas's sake so that they should
have the power to keep many many many
more shabases you follow me to increase
shabas it's not that shabas is
sacrificed if we don't have this we
won't have any shabas this is to
facilitate we got in other words it's a
it's what do they call that a
costbenefit analysis let's do the math
we'll we'll lose one
chabas but we'll gain hund you know
hundreds of others right that's the sou
one can understand that if a Jew doesn't
have a brisma and if a Jew doesn't do
the carbon pes and identify as a Jew and
part of Israel accept Hashem as his god
renounce of zara the basic basic basics
of a
Jew
then he won't be around to keep a seder
if you don't have a brisma. Can you eat
from the carbon
pesa? No, you can't. You can't even eat
from the carbon pes if you don't have a
bris. That's even your servants, your
your uh cananani
servants. So, there are certain basic
things that will say, okay, the
situation is dire. We have to do this.
It's very very temporary. It's like a
once in 20 year experience.
It doesn't happen very much but it's
necessary for the survival of the nation
and that's what the name of Sarah were
trying to weigh they said is it worth
are we in such a state listen we have a
ba mdash we have a sanhedrin we haveen
we have to we're not in golos we're not
do should we still override do we still
need to bring the kesh on shave and they
said of course we
Even though the the Jews who did it
right out of Mit were in the they were
in a terribly low state and you know the
second PES was after after
the just getting the Mishkan back. They
were just getting back on their feet.
They were just it really was a spiritual
piku nephesh that pes that nissan. We we
we we had to save Cla Israel from utter
being lost which is what the what the uh
represents but maybe were saying but
we're not in a dire position like that
anymore. Maybe we could make and just
make everybody do pes and sham is no it
was ruled not that way. Pil ruled abalon
ruled and said there's no such
thing without Mila and Pesak there is no
claw Israel there's nobody to keep
shabas that's how you look at it there's
no there's no shabas what shabas are he
talking about there's no Jews to keep
shabas who's going to keep shabas
they're not allowed to keep shabas you
need Jews we need Jews now this is not
the argument I will point out that was
used by those who were reforming and so
on well-intentioned people. They said,
you know, one of the first
uh
responsive movement in America was well,
you know, we don't live in
athletes lives in Scarsdale and you
know, Marin and all these places and um
and uh their houses are far away from
the synagogue. How are they going to get
to Shouan Shab? So, let them drive
because it's
Pikuh. Now, you understand the fallacy
of that logic.
Because the purpose of is to keep
Shabas, not to violate Shabas. In other
words, if they have to drive to take
someone to the hospital on Chabas, God
bless them. But you cannot decree that
every single Shabas you should violate
Shabas and consider it a positive thing.
That's it. That's the logic. We cannot
sacrifice Shabas for
Shabas. Doesn't make any sense. Okay.
Now there are that's one approach I I
like that approach because it's the
least how shall I say it's the I like
simple black and white you know
something that everybody already knows
it's in our kishkas it's in our
bones it's a kind of easy answer there
are other more sophisticated approaches
I would
say and offers something here let's
listen to the mish
This is the words of the mayor
Mcdinsk, the great or the rabbi from uh
Lithuania in era immediately before the
Holocaust who was a uh a great scholar
in and and also wrote not only haluffic
works on the Rambam and classic litfish
form but also wrote a profound found
safer called the which he has said was
more essential that his works to deal
with difficult questions profound
questions from the this being one of
them. It
says
in we put as prim primary uh we
broadcast shabas. Okay.
Now
mishkos below
shabas. So I would have
thought maybe you can build a mishk on
shabas right maybe that's the maybe it's
like neesh build it build it build it so
that we'll have a shabas to keep a place
for the to reside excuse me. All
right.
So, Shabas, he says, is the witness that
Hashem created the world and renews the
world
constantly from absolute
nothingness. The
aoddish is to prove the
constant supervision and recreation of
the world minute to minute by Hashem.
and the entire
world. What does this
mean? Keeps the world alive. If the if
Hashem would so to speak not bring his
life force energy, his or the or by he
or the the basis of creation which is
light, time and space, then everything
would cease to exist instantaneously.
there would be no world as we would say
like there's no Jews there's no anything
there would be no no
world
so suggesting another which I occurred
to me but he is the one who developed it
so
beautifully that the mdash represents
the mishkan un some level represents the
world itself so there's two basic ideas
about the mishkan one is that it's a
kapor for the sin of the golden camp
right keep hashm I'm here. We mentioned
something even profoundly that we don't
don't allow the divine chariot images uh
to uh which are included in the kuruima
of the mishkan face of a lion face of an
eagle face of a human being inside the
koshim. But we don't allow ashore
because it's like too painful and we
don't allow the coingle to wear his
golden garments into the kotashim. It's
just too painful because that reminds
us how you going to appear for Hashem.
The Auron represents itself, Hashem's
presence with gold garments when you
just sin so grievously with gold. That's
one theme of the Ba Md, but the other
theme is that it's the creation of the
world. We know there's a famous where
the world was
created or this actually reflects both
concepts. When the world was created in
tish, it means that Hashem is evaluating
us and and looking for us to cor to
repent and correct our ways and to
repair the world. But when it's when we
look at the world from the perspective
of the first of Nissan, right, then
we're saying that
Hashem is the creator of the world with
compassion, right? And it has two
elements. It's through constant
recreation of the world. And if I don't,
if I extinguish the carbonos, then
essentially I extinguish the world. And
if I extinguish the carbon pesa
willy-nilly and if I extinguish the
brisma, I prevent I I I cause the Jewish
people to elu lose their connection to
the sustaining force of what the Jewish
people are all about. A Jew may not be
sham shabas but he's if he's not
circumcised right then it's like he's
not uh considered you know even in the
secular world their first organization
they made in America was Benet Brrith
you know Ben Brit completely secular but
Ben Brris they taught the bris everybody
knows there's got to be a covenant
between Hashem and Jewish people without
the covenant between Jewish people
doesn't exist Shabas is kept by Jews the
Jews that do brisa that are obligated to
It all goes together. Carbon pes is only
done by Jews. A non-Jew is not allowed
to eat from the carbon pes. There's a
famous story in the about a wise guy who
wanted a a good meal and he he dressed
himself up as a Jew and he would go eat
carbon pes and he boasted about I've had
tons of carbon
pes you have no right to eat this. So
they caught him. How did they catch him?
They set a trap. They said they
suspected him. says, "Um,
uh, yeah, well, what part would you
would you like? Would you like the tail,
the alia?" And he said, "Oh, that's
juicy. Why not?" He didn't realize that
that's not part of the garbess. So
anyway, they caught him. They outed him.
They got rid of him. Pretty severe
punishment.
And and uh so if you look at from the
perspective that Hashem is this
sustainer of the world, the fire of the
universe is Hashem's or which can never
go out ever even for a half a quarter of
a millisecond. And that's why we have to
sustain the Jewish people. It's our
spiritual connection to Hashem and
Hashem's connection to the world that
keeps us alive moment to moment. And
that's why
it's we say it to say night. You're
going to live because these two mitzvah
because through these two mitzvah your
brisk with me will be expressed at all
times. Okay? And if occasionally it
falls out on chabas so be
it because if there are no Jews there's
no shabas. The idea is keep the Jews
alive so they can keep shabas. If I
don't allow you to do brisma carbon pasa
carbonos, then it's the same idea, the
same concept, the
same idea. That's just not the
rationality of what it's all about.
Okay. So, um I truly believe those are
two excellent approaches to solve a very
very painful question, a difficult
question. But you see the wisdom
inherent in the Jewish people. Hill came
from Babel and Bubbl were the Jews who
remember oh from the original Gulus
saying we have um we have an awareness
that sometimes we need to save Cla
Israel as a whole when you're saving Cla
Israel as a whole so that they can keep
Torah mitzvos not so that they can
continuously violate them but that they
should continue they should keep Torah
mitzvos that is our protection I don't
have to go into all the stories about
how shabas became such a theme for many
of the survivors of this horrible,
horrible events of Gaza war and they
reconnected to their Judaism through
that mitzvah. Not surprising no matter
how far you are. But these show the
connection and they ultimately help us
and if we have to violate one shabas to
stay connected we'll do that because
shabas is the imperative. Shabas is the
long-term plan. one shabas
new for for a lifetime of shabosen.
Okay, the more that I could say but I
won't. Uh my fervent prayer to each and
everyone is to we should acknowledge to
hashem how his light of supervision has
not gone out from the Jewish people in
this year and particularly at this time.
We've reached a point where it seems
that Hashem has taken up through his
various unusual in this world to say
enough is enough. The days of Amik are
numbered. Um we want the Assurim those
Jews that are held in captivity, the
parro
captivity should be should be left. And
to that end, I'll just say this last
thought. The four cups that we drink on
the seder night and particularly in this
year actually according to the zor
kadosh and and the teachings of a
breastlo he says interesting thing based
on based on the zor of course he says
the three servants of parro one who gave
the cup the wine one who baked the bread
and of course uh potif the head butcher
slash murderer whatever it might have
been security chief
All are represented in the four cups of
Pes. So my brother said to me, "Yeah,
there are four mentions of the word
coast in the episode of Yoseph and the
slaves of parro." And that's what they
say. Well, four times the word coast
appears and therefore that's a remorse.
Like what could possibly be the
connection there?
Aman says there's there's various tas
various low cravings that we have. We
have the craving for
um what Potifar craved which was sexual
immorality. We have what s of sar
mashkim is the basic feeding and that
includes also various animal drives.
That's our that's our parro that keeps
us enslaved. We need to move past pes is
the bread on. It's a simple bread. It's
not fancy. It's not elevated. It's not
gyic represents gya ga right I'm so
important. But the lesson of humility is
the lesson of mostu is the lesson of the
matzos flat simple no additives no
fanciness no rising up. So theor first
comes to us and says you're very
important and therefore you deserve
this. It's imperative that you have it.
It's life and death. Well, no, it's not
because we should just realize there's
what we want and there's what we need.
And what we need is much, much less than
what we want. And we don't need honor.
We don't need people's
praises. We don't need to count how many
hits you get on yubon.com.
We don't need to decide whether you're
based on other people's opinion, whether
you're good, bad, medium, or anything
else. Just do your thing with utmost
humility. The problem that our cousins,
the Arabs, have based on the recent
communications with Kamas in this cru
crucial moment where they're basically
being told, "Give up the hostages, lay
down your arms, and leave." Incredible.
something that nobody in the world would
ever say except for this Udus president
that was sent by Hashem giving Gav
giving power to the to the leadership in
Israel to stand strong against these
murderers. But what did they reply? They
said we can't for us it's a matter of
life and death. In other words, we're
we're we are prepared fully prepared and
want to die rather than stop our our
goal of destroying the Jewish people.
They're they're married to it life or
death. And what's their problem? So, you
didn't get the land. First of all, you
can go to Alaka anytime you want and you
got 22 countries filled with riches that
you can go anywhere anytime you want.
Why you got to hold on to this lousy
little little place which you've turned
into a a hell on earth. Why do you want
to hold on to it? Like go to Doha. Go to
Qatar. You know, they got lots of money.
They'll pay for university. They'll do
anything to you. In Libya, Mama Gaddaf,
who was probably Jewish, used to give
his people free houses, free cars, free
education, $3,000 for every baby that
you had. I think that's because he was
basically from Jewish roots to his
cousins who were Jews. Anyway, he gave
away everything. You had a good life in
these Arab countries. You could have a
good life. Now, you have to stay here
and die. Why? Because you can't admit
the fact that Hashem told the Jewish
people that this is your land. And even
in your Quran says so. And you can't the
Jew to live in and to build a B mikdash
to Hashem. That is not that is a house
of prayer to all people. No, we have to
build there. We have to have it there.
We have to it's their
inherent lack of
humility. That's right. Basically, I
think is is a lack of self-esteem
essentially because anybody with
self-esteem wouldn't want to destroy
their their lives and their children to
such an extent. again mixed in with all
the ideologies but those are willing to
be a little bit humble and say the Jews
have a place in this world the Jews have
a place in this world the Jews should be
left alone let them prosper let them
shine let them grow let them contribute
everything that they have to contribute
today
said that wherever a Jew goes he's he's
he's pointed to the top why because
we're capable because we have merit it's
it's the anti DEI. Jews don't get the
job because they're of a certain sc uh
color, ethnicity or or or or oppressed
group. If they get a job at all, it's a
miracle in any society. They get it
because they bring greatness and
blessing to everybody. That's humility
that we want to we want to understand in
ourselves. We're here to offer our best
to the world and to our own people and
not to fight with each other, not to
denounce each other, to respect each
other, to respect the holy Torah. This
is where we are. It's a critical time.
Hashem should bless us. And this next 20
years, we're going to see. We're all
going to be there in your mira 20 years
from
today. Yeah, we're going to be there. I
don't care how old you are. If you're if
you're 100, you're still going to be
there. I'll give you the braha to be
there in good health. You know it's
going to be a ready TSA and medical
breakthroughs. You're going to take a
little drink of stem cells and you're
going to regenerate to 30 years old. You
don't know what's going to be in the
next 20 years. Stick around. Glad to
stick
around continuous for Israel should have
a beautiful humble grateful thankful
miraculous
pes and enjoy. We'll speak to you
then. Heat.
Heat.
Yeah. Heat.
