it's
[Music]
welcome back everybody to the charlie
chuva kabora
not just for women really the only ones
that are alive are all women
but anybody watching no restrictions
so we're happy that you've joined us we
are
in actually still shar aleph in the
beginning
uh we're in paragraph 25. it's actually
quite long
and i only began to delve into it last
week so if you want to go back
you can also check out the playlist in
other words if you go to yblunet.com and
go to the playlist
you can go to the sharitruba playlist
and watch it from the beginning
or at least choose last week's and
review
so i want to do it more justice first i
welcome everybody and we wish you a
foolish layman to everybody
anybody who's feeling a little bit off
they should all feel great
um so
let's begin again with chapter 25
we are going to investigate a very
interesting mishna
uh a mishna for sure uh it's actually
the first mishna of perciavo
chapter four but before we do that we're
going to go into michael
and we're going to read pretty much uh
i'm not going to say the whole thing
of chapter six but we'll start with the
verses six and seven
then we're going to go back to three and
four and then we're going to forward to
verse eight and in that order okay so
let's become familiar
with the idea that the the the robina
yonah wants to get across to us
his main idea in in paragraph 25
is that at least in the beginning is
that
um he actually brings scriptural proof
that the process of trueva demands that
a person have
a certain sense of modesty we'll call it
sanua okay
and he translated basically as someone
should avoid receiving honor
for his good deeds ex actually these are
the
the words in the shock and arc in the
very first halacha
of the that the way of the tsaddikim the
way of the righteous
are to yes not get involved in fights
with everybody around them
but not to be embarrassed about serving
god and do it
modestly right we talked about this a
little bit when you get stuck at an
airport
right how are you going to pray as a jew
which it's filling on
right you had to leave home before
daybreak
just to make an airplane uh ride that
you know you have to board at 7 00 am or
6 30 a.m
so you have to dive in the airport so
for men anyway this is not really a
problem for women
well you know women of course like to
pray and they can do it
without villain of course and do it a
little bit more
uh modestly but in the meantime let's
focus now on this idea of avoiding honor
or um especially for your good deeds
okay so
he begins like this
so this whole idea of serving god with
modesty but this is all part of chuva
believe it or not
it's like an icker it's a prime
part of doing chuva
so we're gonna see the words of michael
now it's chapter six we're going to read
six and seven
and we have to go slow
the question is asked with what shall i
approach hashem
so the hebrew is
how am i supposed to move forward in my
relationship with god how can i
come close to god and it sounds like the
answer is already there
is
the word ikov is from bent over bowing
it's a hum
an act of humility of being humble
so he translates humble myself before
god on high
le lo que maram marome is in the heights
i'm going to bow or humble myself before
god on
manu the algae
now it's still part of like a question
should i bring come close through all
these offerings
such as olos all those are burnt
offerings
a gully mercaths vinay shana
meaning less than a year old they would
probably be the most
i'm not going to say most expensive but
they're certainly the most popular
and they're like you know veal veal you
know good to eat
then then the question is will hashem be
appeased
am i going to make like this razon am i
going to have
an atonement through thousands of rams
right the hebrews like this hashem
or the rivervotes nakhla shaman or
tens of thousands of rivers of oil the
oil is used
in the menacos in the flower offerings
is this how i'm going to find my my
atonement
that's a great question
shall i give over my first born to a
tone from my defiance
now they're going to see there's two
different types of sin so in
in hebrew um attained the kure
pishi peshi is uh we're gonna
we're gonna see that that is a more
severe type of sin
okay it's more like intent intended to
sin
so i'm gonna give over my firstborn to
atone for my sin
of defiance or the fruit of my belly
for the sin of my soul pre-bit knee
the fruit of my stomach
to serve as a um
[Music]
an atonement for my soul for the sin
of my soul so the the
name the ravino yon explains it's going
to be like
two separate questions are being asked
and we have to
look at it carefully so when it begins
by saying then
hashem how am i supposed to come close
to hashem
the person is asking themselves with all
my sins i have so many sins
i'm sorry go back reverse
how can i come close to hashem
because he has done so much for me
right he is and we're going to see
verses 4 and 5
in mira that it discusses all the
kindnesses that hashem
has done for us so this idea follows
that idea
how am i supposed to come close to him i
owe him
everything and i'll never be able to pay
right
it's just amazing he provides
everything for us from the moment we
were conceived
and of course the time we were born and
king david has
um several different um praises of
hallelujahs
all through his life cycle of what
hashem has done for him he was so in
touch with the
hashem we will discuss at another time
but i just want you to know
he he brings down the idea that while he
was in his mother's
womb he wasn't poisoned you know with
toxins
things were filtered out you know
through
i don't know if it's the umbilical cord
but he was able to er
to eat and to drink and to whatever you
know could be nourished uh
wholeheartedly while he was in the womb
and something very interesting that he
says that about
this idea when he sucks when he's
suckling and he's nursing
that he's so grateful that hashem placed
he placed
his mouth next to the breast which is by
the beena by the heart
by this understanding pure place as
opposed to
animals who i don't know i mean i
haven't seen too many animals lately
but you know they have nipples all the
way down their body
and you know let's say take a cow cal is
a better example
the cow where is its whatever you call
these the others
they're down by the dirty part of his
body you know you watch those
national geographics and the cavs are
like looking up and they're sucking by
the
we call it the turkish you know the
nasty part of the body
and and how grateful that he was that he
got to
suckle from with a heart right where his
mother's heart was
i mean just think about it right what
kindness that hashem
provides and david goes through his
whole life we'll talk about another time
but in the meantime
we can go shortly let's uh
let's i want i want to skip to it but i
don't want to skip i'm going to go in
order
let me just finish this line and then
we'll talk about it shortly so he says
like this
ki lamala because he mentioned earlier
meaning verse four and five
the parasha hashem so let's now take a
look at verse four and five just to get
a better idea
it says in four for i brought you up
from the land of egypt and redeemed you
from the house of bondage
hashem is talking about the hasid and
we'll see clearly at the end of five
where he actually spells it out but
isn't that amazing this is our
relationship with god
he took us out of such a decrepit place
such as
egypt and we were in bondage and he's
the one who removed us
and he sent us moses iron and miriam
thank god right they had leaders my
people here now
do you remember what balak and bilaam
schemed
they schemed to not only you know
cause us to sin but to actually curse us
and hashem turned billam's words around
and he turned the whole scheme around
right he protected us in the desert
and they schemed and what bilum son of
aur answered him
and all the events from him to
gilgal you can go through it
unbelievable that hashem did for us in
order to recognize the righteous acts
of hashem look in here in the hebrew
laman
in order we should recognize the um
the kindness the kindness that hashem
did for us
okay having that in mind that
first verses four and five talk about
the the kindnesses now we understand why
he's asking
the prophet is asking on behalf of our
people
how am i supposed to come close to you
and you've done all this for me
and yet i sinned i went against
so now we're gonna talk about the second
part because the fact is that i sinned
so i have to come with humility
as let's go with the verse when we go
back to the beginning where it says
this idea of of bending myself before
this god on high
is one of the many sins
that i that i committed so how am i
supposed to tone for them that's the
question
right when i'm supposed to bring all
these kerbanos and all this oil
as we described in verse six and seven
so it does say it does mention elokai
marom right the the passage says
it mentions specifically god on high
lohoros
to teach us or instruct us and to inform
us
of what kama rui
how fitting it is for someone to be
submissive or humble before one
right because he has defiled the himra
like the word in um
ben sora omora right more is to
to be um rebelling
to rebel he used the word defiled
the will of the elevated one who is
elevated
so when we realize this is what we've
done
how we're supposed to come close to
hashem through corbanos
we know what they think hashem wants our
kurbanos we saw we can
we'll get to it i'm going to go through
some of these verses in
in the tanakh itself shortly but uh
he's you know he rebukes the people what
do you think hashem wants your corbanos
he doesn't want your cabanas he wants
your heart
he wants your he wants you to change
he wants you to become a better person
so the prophet now raises two he's
speaking about these two questions
what is the first question shall i
approach him with these ola offerings
or with their calves in the first year
or
right part of the same question will
shem be appeased by thousands of rams
and tens of thousands
of streams of oil i share akad
manu behem al-rov khasad the idea is
what you think that if i
approach him with these offerings as
some kind of gesture of appreciation for
his kindness
that's that's going to be enough that's
going to make me bring come closer
we already know that that that's not
really what he wants
and what about the other side attained
bakuri pishi what if i give my own son
my firstborn son
wanted to atone for my sins or as we
also spoke about
the irregular uh pre-betting
another child a regular child
who's going to um you know
if you give him a sacrifice that will
atone for your lesser sins
because the bahora is more precious and
that's related to the pashi
the intentional sins and the khattos are
the in
the uh the unintentional sins
so you give a regular child for that
so he comes now to discuss the second
question
how am i supposed to humble myself uh in
front of
the mini bow before the the god who's on
high
and this is what he means when he says
aten bakuri peshi
i'm going to give my firstborn on
account of my more severe sins
again like this is a bending over
another act
of humility or submission
in order to receive atonement for my
sins
here otsempeshi now once i come
or in order to show i think it means
really to recognize
once i'm doing this when i'm bringing
all these carbons
um or in this case by bending over
i am showing how severe my intentional
sin was
again he's using the word pescia's
defiance
but it's the more severe of the sins
kirilla take the kuribakorbin
it would certainly make sense to give my
more important son my firstborn son over
as an offering to atone for my defiance
kirav mahod because the sin is very
great
the the actions that i did were very
great and
the ki atsum and they're very strong he
used the word severe
well the prophet continued pre-bitne
right he's he said well i'm going to
give over my
regular fruit of the belly meaning a
regular son
a child to tone for the transgression of
my soul
it's a question so his kir al hapesha
bikuri the al-khattas pre-bitly
he mentions both these ideas the
firstborn and the regular
uh fruit of the womb i think there's an
underwear called fruit of the loom
but fruit of the womb um
in order to atone for the lesser sin
ki hamerid merit is rebelliousness
so pasha is the more severe sin
it's done the hakis to anger hashem it's
done
out of full knowledge and well you know
full knowledge of what you're doing
that's called pressure
that's an act of rebellion and it
happens to be in the gamora and yuma
discusses the difference
between the khattas the hat what
in other words pasha is more severe now
i want to stop here for a second
because i want to go and really
understand these
verses the verse as well before we go on
so we're in chapter six and i want to go
to verse
four and five and i want to show you
some of the commentary on this
i mentioned the prophet is showing you
the goodness that hashem had done for us
that he brought us up out of land of
egypt and he redeemed us from the house
of bondage
right that in egypt nobody ever escaped
it was like the iron curtain like i know
that we know that means like in east
germany you couldn't get from east
germany to west germany
or we we uh picketed we protested
for those who were around uh in the i
was
young in the 70s and the 80s maybe even
into the 90s
there was a lot of protests to try to
save a soviet jewry
there was an iron curtain i think in the
early 90s they were maybe the late 80s
they were finally let out
or in in in slovene in groups
but it was very difficult you basically
had to
be put into the gulag and become a
national
international personality in order to
get out
and i'm sure it was not that comfortable
so interestingly enough me based on
vadim because that's the words that are
used from the house of slavery
house of bondage this is for sure
referring to egypt no question
the place where we were slaves
and when it says i sent moses
i sent moses
to miriam they taught us the torah right
those three pillars
the sister and brothers
aaron would atone for their sins right
because he was the high priest
and so moses taught the law our own
atoned for their sins
and miriam instructed the women
so what what what a what a great hasid
and he sent them the three of them with
tidings of redemption
while we were still in bondage this is
according to the radak
and this would help relieve our anguish
knowing at least in the last year
that we were getting out
what about my people here now with balak
the king of moab scheme and what bilaam
the son of born answered him
you know so the prophet is reminding
them of all the kindness that god
bestowed upon his nation
you know that bilum and balak they
wanted to destroy us
and we were not destroyed they both were
destroyed right our enemies were
destroyed
we survived right what is the famous
expression
how do you sum up judaism it's really
not nice but how do you sum up judaism
in
in like one sentence right they tried to
kill us
we won now let's eat several celebrate
meat so we do a lot of eating there's no
question about it
and we hopefully will continue to do a
lot more celebration celebrating
and um offshore in the ismat of the
mashiach and we're finally out of this
horrible exile
and all of our fast days
will turn into feast days as prophesized
so of course they wanted to meaning bill
and mimbala wanted to curse the jewish
people they wanted to curse israel
but good but what did hashem do he
changed it
he could only bless us right if they
couldn't they couldn't curse us
as um
where is this verse
oh so there's a verse in numbers 20 to
12.
actually it might be 23 8 i think it's
23 8.
it says how can i how can i curse if god
has not cursed them
in other words god was not interested in
cursing us keep this in mind billam
could not curse us if god was not
interested in cursing us
so there's another idea
god wasn't even angry with us he
couldn't even invoke the anger
he also says how can i bring anger if
hashem is not angry
same verse so we know that this is the
hashem is not angry
what happened in sheep team we were
involved in idolatry
and immorality you know sexual
immorality
and 24 000 people died in a plague but
you know a lot more could have died
and we could have been destroyed and yet
we weren't
so that is a what happened in gilgal
and so that's an interesting thing
what happened in gilgal was that's when
we came in the day we came into eretz
israel we celebrated we
we offered up kerbatos to hashem and
in other words many people are not aware
that in in the book of joshua
chapter 8 where the blessings and curses
are taking place
actually took place on the first day
that we went into land of israel
right in our minds maybe in in uh sunday
school whenever we were kids
we thought okay they crossed the jordan
river and they went right to jericho
and seven days they went around and then
the walls
came tumbling down that happened
after the first thing we did is we went
to shechem
to mal griezmann mount avail and did a
whole
sacrifice to a shaman wrote the torah in
70 languages
and took oaths and promises to upkeep
the torah
and then we went to gilgal and it
repeated the same thing that was in
shechem the first day
it actually was all one 24-hour period
the same day
so this was a miracle when we came to
israel we traversed over 60 miles
in one day how do we have time to write
the tone to 70 languages
i don't know but it said it's a miracle
and that's what happened
um
okay what about the calves in their
first year oh so that was
that was all part of versus four and
five
okay ah the last part
where it talks about laman
hashem in order to know to recognize and
to be cognizant
of the kind acts of god that god did all
this to us
so that we could we could have the
opportunity to realize all the goodness
that he performed for us
okay this is what he's talking about he
extended himself to us
and the people who should recall through
as i mentioned the old tradition
already some of the things that happen
and that which is written in the torah
as righteous acts of god these are
uh kind acts of god
so now we have a better idea of the
deshem did for us
how we supposed to come close
to hashem now i have to find where i
left off
i got lost here we are
now the roberto yoda continues
and he's going to help us answer the
questions that this proves you need to
humble yourself
humbling yourself is prime is such an
important part
of chuva yes but how do we serve hashem
as i mentioned the very first halal in
the ark says
sir walk in right this is this plastic
we're going to read now
shortly you have to walk humbly with
your god
don't start fights with other jews so
important
right if it is a matter of personal
personality chemistry don't get involved
if it's serving hashem then you have
permission to stand up
and fight the battles for god but when
someone is attacking you personally
the suggestion is let it roll off your
back be a vatran
right don't don't get in fights with
people that are
attacking you personally but when
they're fighting over
godly issues you have to stand up for
them okay let's go on he says
this is the response the prophet had
asked the questions
but his response is in verse eight
his response is in verse eight let me
just pull it up here
he has told you oh man what is good
and what the lord demands of you but to
do justice to love
love and kindness and to walk discreetly
with your god
the hebrew is hats
walk humbly with your god this is what
god wants from you right
so we're going to go through it each one
mishpat
to do
to actually love doing kindness
to walk humbly with your lord
okay so now that we saw the verse
you know what maybe i will actually go
through the commentary as well
okay
he's told you a man what is good
so this is the answer to the question
how do i approach hashem
how am i supposed to approach hashem
god informed the nation long ago through
the prophet samuel
and this is it in first samuel chapter
15 verse 22
that he's not interested in your in your
curb buttons he wants your heart he
wants you to change
he's not interested in insincere
offerings obviously if he tells you to
make an offering
you have to bring the offering i think a
lot of people read that verse wrong
it doesn't mean don't bring them it
means don't bring them
without your heart okay if you're
supposed to bring it you bring it
not that he doesn't want it and
therefore don't bring it
right i think there's a group of people
like that somewhere in the world right
but that's the wrong way no he wants you
to bring it
but he's not interested in it that's not
what he wants he wants you to come close
that's the whole concept of corban the
word crave
to come close right we can talk about it
another time but there's different
opinions of what
how do the corbados affect
atonement right atonement is removing
the barriers that you have without your
relation with hashem
so on a more on a simple level i think
it's the ramban
who basically says that you're supposed
to feel
as if that animal
when you watch it go to the process of
being slaughtered and dying in the blood
and
all the different details that that's
what really you deserve
but hashem and his kindness has allowed
this to be killed instead of you
but the main everyone agrees the word
kurubun is related to
the khareth to come close and that's the
goal that's the ultimate goal
in in in bringing any of these things
when he says
only to do justice so we're talking
about
many of the laws many of the laws that
have to do between
uh man and man being adam but not only
right mainly nisque mammon
but also arrios laws of immorality
what does it mean to love kindness to
love doing kindness
these are acts of benevolence and
kindness one should always try to be
more kind to others
one should strive
to strive for the welfare of one's
people and to be diligent in his efforts
for the betterment of his neighbor
whether rich or poor
is among those stringent essential
demands of a person
and this is by the way a quote from the
charity charity
however one must realize it's not enough
to simply do acts of kindness
as the khufat zhaim who wrote a book
called
it says you actually have to love doing
the kindness don't just do the act
love doing the kindness get
electrified get get get get high
on it you know what i mean like get that
adrenaline going
just love it have a love relationship
with the acts of kindness i'm being
totally serious
now this is important to walk humbly
what does it mean to walk humbly with
your god
fear god in a discreet manner fulfill
his commandments in an
unassuming manner privately
without great publicity do not perform
them
only for the sake of gaining honor for
there is nothing dearer to god than one
who is humble
and that's what we're talking about
um okay so let's go back into the
charity and he says
like this
the last idea we just read verse 8 right
that there this is the most nifkar this
is the most
choice this is the most desirable
thing to do like we said to do justice
love kindness walk modestly with god
that's much more desirable than all the
offerings whether they're
completely burnt up offerings as always
are or monaco's which are the flower
offerings
and then you would have thousands of
streams of oil
the kadembo as hashem al khasidav
in order to approach hashem because
you're appreciating his kindness
what's the best thing you can do is act
like
god and i'm totally serious what is god
he strict justice on one hand
but on the other hand he's full of mercy
so
what is the torah the torah is an
instruction manual that's what it is the
word
are teachers it is an instruction manual
how do you know if you want to like read
what they call crib notes
you have um like an essay that would
basically describe what the book is how
would you describe the torah
the torah begins with hasid it ends with
the like the book ends and therefore
that teaches us that everything in
between is
it what did god do he clean in my
opinion
it says he clothed he clothed him but
i i like the idea the fact that he
brought him his wife right how much
has it is it to bring people together
right that's
i think that's the ultimate but that's
not the example given the example given
is that he clothed the naked okay so he
clothed the naked
it's after the sin meaning after he
already met his wife and it ends with
god burying moshe who buried moshe
god himself so begins with him doing
by clothing the naked and ends with a
hesitantness
of burying the dead nobody's ever going
to thank you for it
so everything in between is about
so if we're supposed to we want to
approach hashem
to show our appreciation for his
kindness and it says
and the the prophet concludes with this
idea of walking modesty
so with this phrase he's actually
answering the second question
because how shall one humble himself
before god
who is on high to atone for his sins
so this is why we're trying to say this
is what he's trying that humility this
this
bending over this modesty
part is actually part and parcel of the
true process
because he says
both these ideas of submissiveness and
humility
it's a primary this is the primary means
of how to express it
to get too close to hashem
he's telling you serve hashem with
modesty that's what god wants
not drawing attention to yourself and
not trying to seek attention from
anybody else
but actually trying to avoid attention
can you try to
get that through your head it's like
it's make it a game if you have to
do a resident and try to figure out
every way that nobody would know
can you figure can you try to figure
that out listen it's uh
i'm not i'm not saying it's a game this
is real life but it's
it's a voda it's it's how we serve
hashem
ki what's his word
this actually shows your it
it proves it it instructs he used the
word demonstrate
this demonstrates if you're
looking to avoid recognition
it demonstrates that you've humbled
yourself and that's what god wants
that's what god wants shalom
it shows that you're not interested you
don't desire
you're not mode you're not desiring
honor for what you've done
because of your honorable deeds but
rather you perform them purely in order
just to obey
his command can you imagine
now i want to go through this mission of
perkins but i don't think we're there
yet we're not going to be there until
the end of this page
it's just a short paragraph but i think
it's very very instructive
so ravina yona adds an element to the
requirement of
this humbleness that he hopes that we
achieve
afk alhamalos right these are different
attributes
one should not take pride i shall learn
if god doesn't want them why are you
taking pride
at your we're talking about the people
who are created
god does not take pride in them so all
the different
attributes aside from the ones we're
about to describe
you should not you shouldn't
be trying to seek let's say like that
so he gives two examples but we're going
to bring a mishna
shortly he says oyshe of the gevorah
wealth and strength right i know i know
certain men
they're very much interested in in
working out
trust me working out is good and staying
healthy
but they make it it's like it's like um
it's like
it's like a vodazara you know when it
comes to let's say sports certain sports
i think i think there's a time and a
place to exercise and be excited about
a hometown or maybe you know there's an
art there is an
art to certain sports okay but to me to
be so
engulfed encompassed their whole life
i mean can you imagine i know people
they remembered every stat
right who was the uh mvp of this year
who hit the most home runs of a certain
year
all the if they only put their head into
learning
right torah imagine the genius
okay or oh share like
wealth there's nothing wrong with being
wealthy it's what you do with it
and and the the kindest people that i
know
who are wealthy are very modest the ones
that are not so modest
it doesn't uh fare well for their their
character
but i'm not the judge so he says
basically comes down to this that all
forms of wisdom
other than contemplating and knowing
hashem
is is basically a waste of time now
what does that mean there are see we're
coming up to hanukkah
there are actually six major branches of
wisdom
that have nothing to do with torah when
i say nothing to do torah i don't really
mean that
i mean that they may they seem to not
have anything to do with torah
you know when it comes to biology or
astronomy and
chemistry and biology and mathematics
these are all things can you imagine
like the villenegon was a master
mathematician
the the ramban was a doctor there's
not only is nothing wrong but if you're
pursuing these
for that for itself there is something
wrong with it
but if you're pursuing them to enhance
your knowledge of god your knowledge of
the world
where you can carry the torah further
where you can get deeper insights
into the torah call it kavod that's
exactly what hashem wants
because they're branches like the
menorah those six
branches of wisdom surround the torah
they
they add to the light of the torah so
there's nothing wrong in fact it's a
great thing to do
right but as long as it's focused on
elevating
the the central flame which is the torah
and we're gonna go into this verse in
jeremiah
now this verse in jeremiah is what a
famous
perkial vote chapter 4 missionary 1
is based on
it says in jeremiah 9 23
thus says hashem let not the wise man
glorify himself with his wisdom right
you have a wise person
and he makes well you know i gotta i
don't know how many letters i have after
my name
oh you have to call me doctor you have
to call me professor people
can get a little bit uh wound up i'm not
saying it's not right i'm just saying
i know some people that are they really
get wind up about it
and let not the strong man glorify
himself with his strength
so we have someone who's wise with
something who's strong
and let that not the rich man glorify
himself with his wealth
right so a wealthy person for the only
for only this may one glorify himself
what contemplating knowing me because
what were you created for
are you aware of what you were created
for to serve hashem
to think about hashem to come close to
hashem
so i want to read two comments one on
that particular
last line contemplating and knowing god
this does not mean you're not allowed to
seek
a claim for knowing hashem roberto jones
stated above the requirement of humbling
oneself
demands that one avoid honor for what he
does in hashem's service rather it means
that one may take personal pride
in contemplating knowing hashem can you
imagine
how many balichuva whatever it does you
have to be belchuva
but you know you've dedicated a lot of
time
and you've made the right choice and you
should be proud of the choices you made
being joyful regarding one's
achievements in this area is itself
a way of serving god because it propels
you
this joy that you you feel that you
experience
by knowing you made the right choices
propel you to even greater heights
however with respect to wealth and the
like even taking personal pride is
wrong since these are things that hashem
does not
desire of a person
now we're we are i'm sure we're all
familiar with the mishna in perkiavo
it's on the very bottom of this page
and but i want to read some things from
the commentary on this but we'll start
with the mystery first
who is a wise man right it's somebody
who's humble
believe it or not because it's one who
learns from every person
who's a strong man one who vanquishes
who overcomes
conquers his evil inclination he's
strong
who's a rich man someone who's happy
with his lot
so
now romero yonah notes in this
commentary this mission is pattern
after the verse we have here our verse
said let not the wise man glory himself
with his wisdom
we know that it's obviously talking
about who is a wise man
someone who learns from everybody and
not let the strong man glorify himself
with his strength
we know that's talking about the person
who is able to overcome his yes or no
because what if you have all the muscles
in the world but you give in to your
vote you give in to your base desires
that you're weakling and let not the
rich man glorify himself with his wealth
we know that's the person who is somehow
happy with his lot
one should not glorify himself with
intellectual knowledge physical strength
or material wealth
because all these are admired only in
this world but lack intrinsic value
however when one learns from every
person
he is truly a wise man now i'm going to
relate this to this
to this parsha because we do know that
yaakov lived with lavon for 20 years
he was away for 22 years took him a year
and a half two years to get to return
but he was with this evil person and
did he learn from him you know there are
things you can learn from evil people
too
passion right you can learn there's
quite a lot you can learn
hopefully it won't rub off the the
negative stuff
and you can truly learn some good things
but anyway i'll get to that shortly
so when you learn from every person you
you will truly be wise
for his wisdom will lead him to
recognize hashem
again when when carver conquers his evil
inclination he's truly a strong man
and his strength is rooted in the fear
of hashem when one is happy with his lot
he's truly a rich person for he knows
the emptiness
of materialism and the value of serving
hashem
it is permitted to take pride in these
forms of wisdom
strength and wealth because they are
actually forms
of contemplating and knowing hashem
so i want to mention i hope i have the
right page here
i have to find it
okay i have it right here
one who receives a letter from a king is
proud even if the messengers are dressed
in ragged and dirty clothes likewise one
should be ready to learn torah and grow
spiritually from his contact with all
people
just right you don't everybody's a
messenger
everybody you know everyone's creating
the image of god
and there's something you can learn from
everybody
so who cares how they're dressed
from a sinner a transgression who
transgresses with excitement and joy
is often willing to place himself in
danger in order to achieve his goal
one can derive from very important
lessons
some very important lessons on how to
serve god with passion and dedication
right you see uh i don't know a bank
robber
and he takes six months just to map out
and figure out a perfect plan right you
can learn something from him
right he's so dedicated he's going to
put his life on the line and he's super
hyper
concentrating so may you know we're not
talking about
how to rob a bank we're talking about
how to be super
focused and and passionate king david
captured
this idea with the words from my enemies
i became wise regarding your
commandments this is in psalms
119 98.
what does it mean for my enemies i
became wise
regarding your commandments so this
commentary says this offers some insight
into a puzzling comment of rashis
everyone knows
when it says love on garthy
the word ghati is the same letters as
taryag when i was with lovin i
kept or i observed i guarded the 613
commandments
that's what rashi says we got it from
the medrash
what does it mean he says when i so
joined with lavon
fulfilling the 613 mitzvahs i
didn't learn from his evil ways meaning
i
learned but not anything evil i learned
about his passion
i learned about business whatever it was
i needed to learn
but when it came to evil it didn't
affect me
which is not so easy to do in this in
this world that we're in
but guess what this is seemingly in
an arrogant claim that i kept it all
however from someone as humble as yaakov
can you imagine we're talking about
yaakov
very humble person so mayor shapiro
explained that yaakov actually did speak
with great humility
right when he says garthy i kept all the
mitzvahs
this is actually true humility meaning
although i kept them
i didn't learn from lavan's evils ways
as i
could have or should have had i followed
the advice of the sages which i did
right i would have adopted lavin's
passion for evil
and channeled it into serving god in
other words we
have an evil inclination and we can
turn that around and serve hashem
with it i know it sounds crazy right
but that god gave us two to two hearts
right it says if you have this passion
for blood you like
i don't know maybe you'll be a murderer
i don't know you just
like to smash people's skulls i don't
know what it is but
you can actually control it and become a
mohel or ashokhet
ashokan is a ritual slaughter of animals
right
you love blood i don't know it just
can't get out of your head
so do something creative and healthy
for some people it's healthy some people
it's not so healthy i get it
um take and channel those passions that
you have
for something good you love making money
just i don't know
you know what go to work for a yeshiva
to raise money
right or a hospital figure out a way
right or you know if you really believe
in a new invention
go and become you know a fundraiser for
a startup right to change the world to
make the world a better place
so don't do it for your own selfish you
know aggrandizement to make yourself
some rich you know magnet that everyone
knows is rich walk humbly with your god
and anyway so that is tonight's lesson i
actually wanted to finish up with 26
just to not to get out of the way but
um let's say like this bring it into
perspective because really
it's more related to paragraph 27
but it's only two lines so let's do it
anyway
so he says yet there's another reason
why humility
is including the principles of true
though
right someone who's about to someone who
is coming back in trouba
is further required to acquire this
actual attribute of humility
because what the person needs to do is
to get rid of the character traits
that caused his soul to sin right he
wants to remove
this from his soul these attributes that
caused him to sin and
motivated him to commit these defiant
acts
and that's where we're gonna begin next
week on
paragraph 27 he's going to go into
the depths of let's say haughtiness
because that's the opposite of
humility and that is the reason for many
of our sins
in other words you want to get to the
root of various sins
it usually comes down to something to do
with the ego
something to do with haughtiness and
we'll pick that up
next week misrat hashem okay so i hope
you enjoyed tonight's uh
today's lesson and we will continue next
