Shimon, welcome to Dr. Schnitle's lab.
In honor of your birthday, your parents
wanted you to have a special birthday
present. They know how much you love to
watch the Dr. Schnitle videos. So, they
wanted you to see the behind the scenes
of how we have all the experiments and
how everything is done. So, would you
like to see some experiments?
>> Yeah.
>> So, if you look over here, here we have
this is for the toilet paper. Do you
remember that video?
>> Yeah.
>> And here we have for the elephant
toothpaste. Oh, and this is the borax
from the slime. And look what we have
over here. Do you remember this? This is
the earuka.
And oh, look at this. Do you know what
this is?
>> Um, I think so.
>> This is a small ball, but look, if you
pull it out, it becomes big and then it
becomes small. We're going to be talking
about this at another experiment in a
future time. Look, we could pick it up
and we could put it on your head.
Should I put it on my head?
>> Yeah.
>> Another time. So, Shimon, what
experiment should we do in honor of your
birthday?
>> I really like ice cream. I would like if
you could teach us how to make ice cream
at home.
>> Teach you how to make ice cream so you
can do it in your house. Is that what
you want to do?
>> Yeah. That reminds me, my uncle Morai, I
miss him dearly. My uncle Morai had an
ice cream truck. Have you ever been in
an ice cream truck?
>> No.
>> He used to go upstate New York to all
the bungalow colonies and the camps and
he used to sell ice cream and he would
bring smiles and joy to all the
children.
Sometimes there were kids who couldn't
afford ice cream. He used to give them
ice cream, but he would say, "I want you
to learn a lot of or do a mitzvah like
>> aim
>> of aim." Do you listen to your parents?
>> Yeah.
>> Do you listen to your parents or do you
make a lot of trouble? My uncle Morai's
son Mishi, my first cousin, he followed
in his father's footsteps and he has an
ice cream company. He goes to schools
and to camps and to bar and bas mitzvah
and to kids birthday parties and he
sells ice cream. I think if we call my
cousin Mishi, he can tell us how we can
make homemade ice cream. Should we do
that?
>> Yeah.
>> Amazing. Hey, cousin Mishi.
>> Hey, how are you?
>> Barak hashem. Barak hashem. Listen, I
need a favor from you. I have a boy
here. It's his birthday today. His name
is Shim. He's in the the studio and I
really want to give him a ice cream
party. Um, we want to know how to make
ice cream. Can you help us with that?
>> Sure. Sure. I would love to help you
with that. How about I come down most
ice cream? Would you want that?
>> Do you want to? Yes, definitely. Um, how
long would it take?
>> I would say I'll be there an hour.
>> 1 hour. Okay. While we wait for cousin
Mishi to come, I believe I have
somewhere in the lab a model ice cream
factory. I want you to call your friends
and I'm going to go look for the model
factory. Okay,
[Music]
Shimon, look what we have over here.
>> Is this the ice cream model?
>> It sure is. Do you know how ice cream
factory works? Well, let me show you.
Ice cream factories take different
ingredients to make yummy ice cream. So
here we have, let's say, the milk. It
measures a certain amount of milk every
certain amount of time. And then once
it's full, it drops it over here. And
then over here we have sugar. And over
here we have the flavor like
>> vanilla.
>> Vanilla. That is correct. And it keeps
on going around, but it's water. It's
hard to see. So look what I have over
here. Do you know what this is?
>> Food coloring.
>> Dr. Snitle's most favorite ingredient.
Food coloring. What color do you like?
>> I like blue.
>> Blue. So, what we're going to do is
we're going to drop some blue inside and
we're going to see how everything turns
colors. You ready?
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. Here it goes.
>> Blue.
>> Oh, look at that.
>> We're turning it colors. And is it
going? Ooh.
Let's see. I think so. Let's put it
right by the pump. Now it's all blue.
Look at that. And what happens if the
whole entire thing gets very dirty? You
know what happens if the factory gets
dirty? They can wash the factory. Look
what they do is they open this up over
here. See? Just like that. And now look
what they got. They can give it a little
shower if it gets very dirty and dusty.
See that? Should I give you a shower?
Welcome, Mishi, to Dr. Schnitzel's lab.
Thank you. I'm so excited to be here.
Amazing. We have a very special birthday
party for a very special boy. His name
is Shim. But wait, Shim, where's your
birthday hat? H Shim is dressed up like
Dr. Schnitle for his birthday. Look at
that. He has a beautiful Dr. Schnitle
coat. And look what I have here.
This is for you.
A mini Dr. Schnitzle. Who wants to learn
how to make ice cream?
>> Me.
>> Amazing.
Wow. This is a real real nice setup. We
have ice cream cones and all your
sprinkles. Who likes sprinkles?
Oh my gosh. You even brought the slush
machine. That's amazing.
And I see chocolate. Everybody say
chocolate.
And I see vanilla. Everybody say
vanilla.
>> Wait a second. Why is this empty? Are we
missing something? Cousin Miy.
>> Well, Dr. Schnitle, didn't you ask me to
come and show you how to make ice cream?
>> Yes.
>> Well, that's what we're going to do. We
brought an empty machine and we're going
to start from scratch. I'm going to show
you exactly what we do in order to make
yummy, yummy ice cream like this.
>> Amazing. I can't wait. So, what's the
first ingredient we need?
>> All right. Well, before we start with
any of the ingredients, let me show you
how the machine works.
>> Over here, we have a motor and we have
an empty container where we pour the ice
cream in. Now, in the middle, we see
this metal a metal pole over here. This
is called a cylinder and it gets very,
very, very cold. And then when we pour
the ice cream in, the ice cream actually
sticks and freezes onto the cylinder.
But then how does it come off the
cylinder? Then we have over here there's
a a plastic white piece. This plastic
white piece is called the scraper. And
the scraper is going to go around and
around the metal cylinder and it's
actually going to scrape the ice cream
off. Should I show you how to do that?
>> M.
>> Okay. We're going to turn on the machine
right now. We're going to see how the
plastic scraper is going to go around
and around scraping the cylinder.
Now, can you see? Wow. That's amazing.
Okay. And now we're going to actually
put the vanilla ice cream into the
machine. So over here we have some
yummy, yummy vanilla. Now over here is
vanilla flavor ice cream. It has milk
and it has sugar and it has some yummy
yummy other ingredients that we're going
to pour into the machine and we're going
to see what the machine does with it. M.
Wow, that's a lot of ice cream.
>> Cuz Mushy, I have a question.
>> Sure, birthday boy. What's your
question?
>> Why is it only halfway full?
>> Wow, that is a very, very good question.
And the reason for that is because when
it freezes, it actually expands. Like
I'm sure Dr. Schnitzer could tell you
when we put water in the freezer, what
happens to the water? Do you know
Sherman?
>> It expands.
>> It expands. Very good. And the same
thing is with the ice cream. So, it
actually starts off about halfway
through and while the ice cream is being
made and scraping against the cylinder,
it becomes bigger and bigger and more
and more full until it becomes so full
that it overflows. Cousin Mishy, I have
a question. I see that those already
full to the top. Does that mean we could
have ice cream? Sure.
Who would like to have ice cream in
honor of Shim's birthday? Hey, Cousin
Mai, please show us how we make a swirly
ice cream.
>> Sure, Dr. Schnitzo. I would love to show
you.
Now, this one we're going to do vanilla
because vanilla is very, very yummy.
>> I love vanilla.
>> Are we ready?
>> Yep.
>> Okay.
Going to pull down on the handle.
Wow.
[Applause]
Oh my gosh. Look at that.
But wait, can we put some toppings on
it?
>> Of course. What kind of toppings would
you want?
>> Uh, we have nut crunch, cookie crunch,
chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles,
chocolate fudge.
>> I would like please chocolate with
colorful sprinkles on top.
>> I would love to give you one.
>> But cousin Misha, do you know what I'm
thinking? Maybe we should give it to the
birthday boy. Such a good idea.
>> Yeah.
>> Like one birthday boy.
>> Yeah.
>> There you go.
>> This is for you.
>> Make a bra. Cousin Mai, can Dr. Schnitle
try to make a chocolate ice cream for
hell? Show.
>> Sure. Dr. Schnitle. Here you go.
>> So, what do I do? I put it here.
>> Put the ice cream underneath. And you're
going to pull on the handle.
>> Pull down. And then what? And then I
turn it around.
>> Turn. Turn. Turn.
>> I go like this. Like this.
>> Like this. Okay.
>> Oh, you're getting it.
>> Is it good?
>> It's perfect.
>> I love that.
>> Wow.
>> Oh my gosh.
>> This is Wait, it's too much. What do I
do?
>> Oh, I'm going to let go of the handle.
>> I let go of the handle.
>> There you go.
>> Oh no.
>> Oh boy.
>> Oh no. This is
Oh my gosh. What should I do? But wait a
second. You like sprinkles? What do you
like on it?
Sprinkles. Okay. So, we take it and we
put the sprinkles on top. But wait a
second. Do you like vanilla, too?
>> Yeah.
>> He likes vanilla. Can I put vanilla on
top? Okay. We're going to pour it like
this. And we go. Oh, look at that. This
is very, very good.
This is amazing. Oh, this is going to be
so amazing for you. This going to be so
amazing. Oh, no.
Dr. Schnitzel made a mess. Oh no.
Everybody say, "Oh no."
>> Oh no.
>> Look at this mess. Who's going to clean
this mess?
>> You.
>> Dr. Schnitzel.
>> Yeah.
>> Do I look like a cleaner upper?
>> Yeah.
>> Everybody say no.
>> Yeah.
>> I'm sorry.
>> It's okay. The audition.
>> Oh my gosh. Uh, what other colors do you
like?
>> I like chocolate.
>> You like chocolate? Okay, we're going to
put Oh, no.
>> I smashed it.
>> Everybody say you smashed it.
>> Smashed it.
>> I smashed. Oh no. What are we going to
do? Oh, got to get it out now. You know
what? I have a good idea. Let's make a
ice cream bowl. Oh, let's put a little
bit of brown chocolate sprinkles. And
what is this?
>> Coconut.
>> Nut nut crunch.
>> Nut crunch. Nutc crunch. And happy
birthday. Oh, no. You're not the
birthday boy. He's not the birthday boy.
But oh, Hershel, you want more? Hold on,
Hershel. This is for you. He needs a
spoon. Here you go. Don't forget to make
a bra. Cousin Mishi, this was so much
fun. This was an amazing birthday party
for Shim. But what about you? And what
about me? Don't you like ice cream?
>> I love ice cream on it own.
>> Don't I like ice cream?
>> I think you do.
>> We both like ice cream. It's so good to
like ice cream. So here, which one are
you going to make for yourself?
>> Chocolate.
>> Okay, make one for you.
>> Okay,
>> go ahead. But wait a second. I want to
make one for me. And I like the sugar
cones. So I'm going to make mine over
here. Good job.
>> Oh, Dr. Schnitzel. I can't see what I'm
doing.
>> It's okay. He'll be okay in two weeks
from now. Oh, look what I got over here.
Look at that. This is so yummy. Oh. Oh
no. Oh no.
Hey,
it fell. It's not supposed to fall.
>> Okay. What do we do here? Okay.
Oh, this is really, really yummy.
Cousin Mishy,
this is the best birthday ever. What do
you think, Shim? Isn't this amazing?
>> Hey, cousin Mushy, what is this machine?
>> Well, that is a very good question. That
is called the slush machine.
>> Can we have some?
>> Sure. Dr. Schnitle, can you give out the
slush?
>> H Are you sure you want Dr. the schnitle
to give out the slush.
>> I think I think you can handle this
exercise.
>> Okay. So, we we take this over here and
we go like that. Who else wants slush?
Anybody else want
Oh no.
Cousin Miy, what is Dr. Schnitzel doing?
My hands are freezing cold. Oh my gosh.
Okay, let me pour it in over here.
Hold on. Pour this like this. Okay,
here. Hold on to this. This is for you.
And let me put in a straw for you here.
Like that. Okay. And hold on. Do you
need to get a cover?
Doesn't work. Okay. Like that. So,
Kinda, what do you guys like better, the
ice cream or the slush?
>> Ice cream.
>> Um, I like ice slush. Can I make ice
slush?
>> Sure. Not the Schnitzilla.
>> What flavor should I have?
>> Vanilla.
>> Vanilla. Chocolate. Oh, I love
chocolate. Let's do some chocolate.
We're going to do some chocolate. Ooh,
look at that. This is going to be
really, really yummy. Yummy in my tummy.
Here goes. Oh, look at that. It's really
good. Oh, I need sprinkles. Really
yummy. We don't want to waste no pastas.
We're going to put it over the bowl like
this. Okay. I really like a cone. Cousin
Moy, can I use a cone?
>> Sure.
I want to try to put this in the cone.
>> I don't think that's a good idea.
>> I think it's a great idea. Everybody say
ready, set, ready, go.
>> Ready, set, ready, go.
>> Okay, here it goes. We're going to put
it inside. Just like that. This is a
great Oh, no. Oh, we got another bowl of
ice cream. Here it is for you.
>> That's where the boy birthday boy.
>> Birthday boy Simmon. Yes, that's for
you. But wait a second. Let me taste.
So, I have to see if it's good. Huh?
Ice slush.
I love ice.
Cousin Mishy, that was so much fun. But
I'm wondering if we don't have a big,
beautiful ice cream machine in your
house. Is there any way we can do it in
our house?
>> Sure. There's a way to do it with dried
ice. But first, we're going to have to
make the ingredients. Hm. make the I
think I remember. To make ice cream,
we're going to need milk, right? And
hold on to this. We're going to need
half and half, right? And we're going to
need sugar, which I think we have over
here. And we're going to need flavor.
What flavor should we have? It seems
like we have mint, uh, chocolate fudge,
uh, vanilla, and
h two mints. So, birthday boy, what
flavor do you like?
>> I like vanilla.
>> Vanilla. Most people like vanilla. Okay.
So, the first thing we're going to do is
we're going to pour one cup of uh
regular milk inside like this. Good.
Then we are going to add let's put this
over here on the side. Good. Then we're
going to take half and half which is a
very thick kind of milk. And we're going
to add that inside.
Good. And then we have to put in what
else we have to put in?
>> Half the sugar.
>> Sugar. Okay. So, we're going to put I
would say like maybe a cup of sugar.
Does that sound good?
>> Sounds perfect.
>> So, okay. Hold on to that. Hold on to
the cup over there. Yes. Okay. We're
going to pour Okay. A half a cup of
sugar or about about that amount, right?
That should that should be good, right?
That's that's a lot of sugar. Yeah. We
don't want to do too much. Let's put
this over here. Good. Okay. And the next
thing we have to put in is our vanilla.
M.
Would you like to smell vanilla?
Yummy.
Okay. How much are we going to pour?
Let's pour. I would say two
two capfuls I think would be a good
>> that looks perfect.
>> Right. So we have It's so simple. It's
milk half and half sugar and vanilla.
That's it. What color do you like?
>> Orange.
>> Orange. Ready?
>> Blue. Blue.
>> Blue. Red.
>> Green.
>> Green. How about green for Dr.
Schnitzel's here? Okay. So, we're going
to mix it up. Mix. Ooh. Very very good.
Now what I want you to do, Misha, you're
going to hold on to this and I want you
to start mixing it here. Put a little
lower here. Take this and mix it. But
don't splash it. Now while he is mixing
it, look what I have over here. We have
a very, very special surprise.
Oh, look what I have here. Who can guess
what's in here?
>> My eyes.
>> Who remembers the Dr. Snittle dry ice
video?
Yeah. So, let's
Yes, we're going to use dry ice to make
tasty ice cream. So, look what we have.
Look at that.
[Music]
See that? We're going to put that right
over here. And now, what we want to do
is we want to smash the dry ice so that
it becomes teeny teeny pieces. Then
carefully we're going to mix the dry ice
pieces inside our ice cream mix. And
what we want to do is we want to have
that the ice cream should become cold
very very fast cuz what happens if the
ice cream comes cold slow? It turns into
hard blocks of ice. Is that ice cream?
>> No.
>> That's called ice that we put like in
soda
>> without cream.
>> Without cream. So we want to make it
become freezing very very fast. and dry
ice 110 below zero. So, the first thing
we're going to do is we are going to put
on our glove and we're going to break it
in a piece. Oh, look at that. And
another piece. Oh, now let's put this
over here. Good. And we're going to take
a Ziploc bag like this. You see? And
like this. Like that. And let's pour
this inside here. We want to smash it.
Everybody say smash it.
So that it's going to be very very small
pieces. So watch what we're going to do.
We're going to go like this.
Okay. We're going to take this now and
we are going to pour this inside this.
So cousin Mishi, you're going to hold on
to this. Okay. And I want you to
continue mixing. Okay. And let's see
what happens if we slowly not so fast.
Slow. Keep on going. Oh yeah. Oh, let me
see. M.
It's becoming super super cold. Isn't
that amazing? So, we're going to take
Ooh, it's it's so cold. Look at that.
It's really cold. I think we put too
much in it. One, two, three.
[Music]
M. It's delicious.
>> Wo. It's really cold. Look at that. It
was just a liquid. And by pouring the
dry ice inside, instantly it made it
freezing cold.
>> Hey, Cousin Mushy, that was great. But
what happens if you don't have dry ice?
>> That is a very good question. You know,
most people don't have dry ice at their
house. So, what we could do is we could
actually make it with salt and regular
ice. Salt and regular ice. That sounds
amazing. Let's make another batch.
>> Let's do it. Okay. So, here, hold on to
this. We are going to pour another cup
of milk inside. Another cup of half and
half. Yes. We're going to take some
sugar.
>> Oh, beautiful.
>> Birthday boy, would you like to mix it?
>> Yes.
>> We're going to take a big Ziploc bag.
And for this, I'm going to use cousin my
sheep. Please hold on to this big Ziploc
bag. Just like that. Good. And I'm going
to put on gloves for this next part cuz
it's going to be very, very cold. Look
what I have over here. Keep on mixing
it. We got regular ice. I'm sure a lot
of you have regular ice in your house.
So, we're going to put the regular ice
inside. Whole bunch of regular ice. Yes.
Yes. Yes. Keep on mixing it. M.
And
ice is very, very cold. But it's not
cold enough for what we need. So for
this, look what we're going to do. We
are going to take salt. We don't want
regular table salt. We actually want the
salt that is a little bit bigger. And
we're going to pour it inside a whole
bunch. Got to open it up. Keep on
mixing. Just like that. And Oh yeah. And
what's going to happen is the salt is
going to melt the ice. And when it melts
it, it brings down the temperature to
extreme extreme cold. You're going to
see soon what I mean. Now, hold on one
second. That looks good. Okay, we're
going to put this over here and we're
going to take a Ziploc bag
and we're going to pour it inside.
Just like that. Oo,
yes. Yes. Yes. And then we're going to
close it like
like that. Okay. And we're going to put
it in a second ziploc bag to make sure
that it doesn't open up when we are
shaking it. That's right. Look at that.
Beautiful.
This is going to be our ice cream. We're
going to put it inside like that. And
then we're going to take all the rest of
the ice here. Bring it over here. Bring
it closer. All the rest of the ice we're
going to put inside. Now we wait. We got
to put some more salt inside. Got to put
some more salt inside. Oh, that's a lot
of salt. It's going to become very, very
cold and it's going to be hard to touch
it. So, look what I have. I have
something for our hands to protect our
hands. Who can guess what it is?
>> Smelly socks.
>> Dr. Schnitle. Dr. Schmittle. Smelly
socks. Should we do that?
>> Yeah.
>> Yes.
>> Let's see what I have. A special
surprise.
Let's see. Oh, Dr. Schnitle smelly
socks. Here, put this on for you. And
put this on for you. Good. And put this
on for you. And put this on for you.
Yes. Yes. Yes. It is super cold.
>> Good. And now, let's see. We're going to
close this. Watch this, everybody. We're
going to close it. Oh, yeah.
And Dr. Sitell's going to put on his
gloves. Cousin M. You think it's going
to work?
>> Yes.
>> Okay, let's see. We're going to take it
and we're slowly going to mix it around.
And we want to do this for about 10
minutes. Mixing it back and forth, back
and forth, back and forth. And we're
going to pass it around. And you guys
are going to take turns mixing it
around. Yes. Mix it. Mix it. Come on.
Both of you guys mix it. Both of you
guys mix it. Good. Good. Good. Okay, you
guys ready to do it? Here. Take it. Both
of you guys. And start mixing it. Come
on, mix it.
Now, let's see if cousin Mishi can mix
it without gloves. Let's see how long
cousin Miy can do it until it gets too
cold because it's really cold. Here it
goes.
Is it cold?
is splashing everywhere. It's cold,
right? It's very cold.
>> Hold on. Do you think it's done yet?
>> I don't. It's cold, right? It's very
cold.
Wow. Look at that. We have ice cream.
Yay. Who would like to have some ice
cream?
Homemade ice cream. This is going to be
amazing. Hold on to this. Hold on to
that. Here. Sometimes it doesn't work
after 10 or 15 minutes. You might have
to do it for 20 or 25 minutes, right?
>> Yeah. Hold on to this.
[Music]
Who's ready for some birthday cake?
Yay. Okay, we're going to be very
careful with this. Only adults. We're
going to cut the cake in half. It's a
special yummy ice cream cake with a
little bit of uh misinus inside, I
think. Let's see what's going on inside
here. Oh, yeah. There's a little bit.
Okay, this is going to be for you.
Here's a fork. Let's make a bra
together.
M
when it's your birthday, we're supposed
to grow. Not just physically every year,
but with Tyra and mitzv, we have to take
on a new
a new resolution to be a stronger,
better ye. So, birthday boy Shim, what
special mitzvah are you going to do for
your upcoming birthday? Let me think.
Are you going to give more sedaka or
maybe you're going to do more keep it of
aim? Or do you have an idea? Yeah, I'm
going to learn extra Tyra.
>> Extra Tyra. Amazing.
Happy birthday.
Happy birthday to Shim. Happy birthday
to Shim. Happy birthday to Shim. Happy
birthday to
Yay.
Heat. Heat.
[Music]
and let's see. Oh, hey, it's not going.
Auto machine off. Okay,
>> put it back on.
Is it going to go now?
>> Okay. One.
>> Two. Okay, everybody go back to your
place.
>> Yeah.
>> Okay. One, two, three. Okay. What color?
>> Okay. Pick it up. Pick it up.
>> No. Salt is later.
>> Are they all broken?
Wow. Look, it worked.
>> You know what? Look at
>> Look at that. It's ice cream. Okay. One,
two, three.
>> Forget about the work part.
>> Shim, it's your birthday. You have to
take on a good new mitzvah for this
upcoming year. What's going to be your
mitzvah? You
>> need to think about it.
Okay. All right.
