imagine for a minute you're on a hike
with a group of friends this is an
incredible hike you've been planning it
for weeks it's
very challenging super exciting to the
top of this
incredible mountain and halfway through
the hike
a helicopter appears out of nowhere and
the pilot yells out the window he says
come on grab on i'll take you to the top
would you take him up on his offer i
imagine that the answer is no
because when you go on a hike it's not
really about arriving at the top of the
mountain
it's about the hike it's about the
process it's about
the climb to the top of the mountain
in judaism there's a very special and
unique emphasis
on the process of religious growth like
the hiker
the goal is not to arrive at the
destination
for the religious jew it's not about
achieving perfection
it's about working towards perfection
it's not about being perfect it's the
process of becoming
perfect and you know for some people
religious life is
fraught with anxiety and stress because
they're constantly taking note
of their ineffectual campaign to achieve
religious
perfection but teaches us
there's a great inner happiness that
we're supposed to feel
from the process of being
the desire the attempt the endeavor
to live a divinely inspired life
so strive for greatness find great joy
in the ups and the downs of the process
because the hike is the goal not
arriving at the top of the mountain
