Reb Zeira’s Dream

The Gemara says, in Maseches Brochos, daf nun zayin amud aleph, the Gemara there talks about if people see different things in a dream, what the significance of it might be. The Gemara says, "Amar Reb Zeira, Reb Zeira said, 'I nearly sought to come to Bavel to Eretz Yisrael. I always wanted to go from Bavel to Eretz Yisrael.'" Right? Reb Zeira famously in the Maseches Kesubos was one of the chevra that went to Eretz Yisrael. His rebbe didn't want him to go. And I didn't go at the chazoi sa'iri b'chalma, till I had a dream, and in my dream I saw barley. When I dreamed about barley, then I went. What's the p'shat? Because Reb Zeira didn't know if he had the z'chusim to be able to live in Eretz Yisrael. But when he saw barley, he knew he had the z'chus. And the reason is, cuz Chazal say, "Haroeh sa'iri b'chaloim, if somebody sees barley in a dream, saru avoinosav." It means he doesn't have to worry about his aveiros anymore. Shene'emar, as the pasuk says, "V'sar avoinecha v'chatosecha b'chuban." And the Maharsha says, "Sa'irim is melashon v'sar avoinecha." When he saw the barley in the dream, then already he knew at this point, now I can go to Eretz Yisrael. What was the chet Reb Zeira was worried about? He was "I'm afraid to go to Eretz Yisrael. And maybe I'm not on the madregah enough to be able to go to Eretz Yisrael." Suppose you would say, "Kein tzaddik bo s'asuyah tam u'yashar." Well, then how did the barley help him? What does the barley do? Saru avoinosav. Okay, but then I'll like to have aveiros. It sounds like he was zeroing in on something. There was something There was something that was bothering him. There was something that was bothering Reb Zeira that because of that, he said, "I don't know if I'm going to be able to go into Eretz Yisrael. I've no idea." Could it be this Yerushalmi over here in Maseches Ma'aser It's interesting. What did they show him in the dream? They showed him sa'irim. Right? That was what he saw. What was the whole inyan of the chamor Rebbi Pinchas ben Ya'ir? We learned in the Gemara, "Ramah v'sa'iri d'chamrei." They fed him sa'irim. Lo achal, he didn't eat. Reb Zeira felt he's not even like the chamor Rebbi Pinchas ben Ya'ir. He said it out of his own mouth. And he said, "If I'm not like the chamor Rebbi Pinchas ben Ya'ir, I'm going to go to Eretz Yisrael. How am I going to be able to make it in Eretz Yisrael?" They showed him sa'ir b'chaloim. And they showed him the barley with the lashon of "V'sar avoinecha" like the Maharsha says. He knew "V'sar avoinecha." He says, "If that's the >> he knew who was he says if that's the case now I'm comfortable and ready to go down to Israel.
