his fourth yard site is this monday you'd base shot and because he was such a special yeed i happened to know him i wanted to share a few memories and to take away some inspiration for ourselves our families and us as a lubavitcher community as well but first a little background history schwartz schwartz who was known as schwarze was um raised in atlantic city in the 40s and early 50s and then they moved over because there was no proper yeshiva to baltimore where there was the mutical academy ta and it was there that he met i believe in 59 rabies springer who was sent by the rebbe and a springer was a teacher at the shady chaplet yeshiva which was under rabbi sternhill and and whose talmudim included the nerius literacy yeshiva rebbe's children and um had a big impact on schleimer on schwarze and he really you know he brought him to new york and he got him to take a good taste in those years of the badge went to 62 or so 63 i forget which year he went to um to to yeshu university wrote him and his friends a letter when they wanted to leave because the war broke out they should stay and the safest place and they were actually helping in the myth to twill in and there's a lot of the cuny was the director still was the in the at that time the 6970 i think levatansky already moved over to harmonica and he opened his own house there but schwartz was on the campus he was a campus rabbi and he wore those psychedelic colored shirts and everything else you know there's a great book that his son mendel published and it's done very well i encourage you read it um it's uh really tells it was written primarily by schwartz himself like an autobiography and um very very nice and important he talks a lot about many things that took place in those years and you'll have a great laugh and it's uh an important uh piece of history uh especially for uh bot house rabbis and shul today and lupovichers uh takes you in the inside of what was going on in westwood you know westwood friday night in matsushabus near ucla was a scene i was there for one shabbos i was there in 79 or 80 so many years later and i still it was hustling and bustling and if you go back 10 years 60 70 72 73 it was uh very much also that way anyway he um works with the kids with the students he makes the hanukkah parties and the purim parties and it's uh really a great a great scene i was at a purim party i think uh in at westwood at khabar house because my friends and i were sent there uh to the yeshiva to arakhan all the rabbinical students and i became friendly with the rabbi schwartz with schwartzie and he said he needs some chevra to help him and i was one of them and i got to see it was uh wasn't really the best place i could say for a bucker but um nevertheless you know it was it was unbelievable you know hundreds and hundreds of students you're coming in and saying and dancing and talking schwarze was the attraction there's no question about it he was the attraction now i want to go jump over to 1983. 1983 when i was finishing my my time at the bar my friends and i i get a call from schwartz one day schwartzie one day says hi just out of me says you want to do something good for the rubber and for hashem um i'm talking to rabbi langer of san francisco berkeley san francisco and he needs someone to help a group of jews for rosh hashanah you want to go there and he says the place is called marin county and i didn't know where it was and what it is and i said sure and uh he just say tells he goes back on the line he says langer i just found your candidate to lead your services that's how i got to my job my first job that's i went there and i brought a younger buckler mendelreifer to be about fila to help me and it was a positive experience and the bela bottom there in marin county asked me to come back and i told him it's great you got a deal but i have to first get married and you have to put away some money to so that my wife and i have where to live and he could pay the rent and then you know and some basic salary whatever just to get started and this was the shidduch made i did my part i got married and they went and raised the funds to to start us off so i'm eternally grateful to to to schwarze to schleich rip schleimer for doing this and the way i told you is exactly the way it happened you know that's the type of person he was there's no you know needs to be done let's get it done you know questions where what how who this wasn't the mindset of the early slogan okay this is what i learned from him and i'm sharing this with you you know how many people where are we going what's going to happen the the the idea of the khatrilla ripper jumping in i saw this by him and and levitansky and still and cunanan you know it was no questions it needs to be done it just gets done where you're going to find the funds where you're going to find the people where are you going to find the place it's going to work out it is going to work out as long as you have that connection and this also connects to this is huge fat you know it was a few days ago where um young client tells over that sometimes he was like of secretary in addition to being the nebu secretary so to come over and say ask ask him to ask someone if they want to go on somewhere and beyond but don't tell him that's coming from the river so rabbi young would
