he became friendly with and we did the same type of deals with him one day my father comes to him to get the the monthly check that he would give my father return for the the money that he loaned and the profit and he wasn't there he wasn't there a day two three four basically he skipped talent my father talks to goldberg if he did the same thing to him he said absolutely you know he know he doesn't show up anymore at wall bounds my father tells all this to happen what should he do that happens the first thing that ever says is what's his mother's name and he was his name was tom donovan a real non-jewish name an angel that ever says you know his father's name and his mother's name what's his father's name my father happened to know his father's name which i he didn't tell me he forgot and he um then that ever says you should hire a private detective to pursue him so my father says rabbit it cost a lot of money i don't have that money so the number says maybe you and this other person that he also robbed from so together find a private detective and that ever wished my father gave him a bracha that things will work out and the money will be returned etc that was pretty much the ajidis and we'd pick my father up on the way they would walk together and they would talk and schmooze and they were friends so my father happens to and my father did not hire a private detective because goldberg wasn't willing to do it he said it's a waste of money they're never going to find them and you know it's going to cost money my father didn't have the money so it just stayed that way one of the times that he was walking through the heck to the to the rebel he tells him about what happened says come see me tomorrow in my office he comes under his office writes a little card and he says i want you to go to mr golden's office and give them this card mr golden at the time was the d.a and my father comes there and he sees someone standing outside the door with her with with a gun and he knew that he's going to some um you know special person anyway a few minutes later they come they say come in and they bring him into mr golden's uh office mr goldman says tell me what happened my father spoke still at the time a broken english you know and he hears a story and he has someone typing while my father is talking and he says repeat the story but he tells them to repeat it after after he corrected my father in certain words and he says fine and he says it gives me the card and it says from rabbit rabbit writes i want you to help this person mr dolphin and it'll be good for you it'll be good for him and everything will be good in other words they had a relationship and uh they worked together in various ways so if rabbi hath wrote the card mr golden who was a very busy person a very uh you know important person in new york as a d.a uh took him in a few days later detectives detective calls my father he wants to meet with him and he says okay we're going to put in tom donovan's name and compute in the computers or whatever there was at the time in 13 states we'll be looking for him and then we'll let you know they let them know that the first time they went to the address that they had in chicago wasn't there the second time wasn't there a third time they found him and they put him behind bars and they said you have to wait for a trial so my father's name has to come down to the trials he flew flies to chicago and um he was for shabbos downtown and a section called the loop stayed at a hotel the detectives tell my father don't leave your building because it can be dangerous you don't know if if donovan set up someone to shoot you to kill you you know because he knows you're gonna get him to get back the money and he's in jail because of you and all that my father says i have to go to shul shabbos so they say okay and there was a show an orthodox show in the loop section and he went there and he said but just go to school and come back and he did he identified him as the thief and they wouldn't let him out of jail until he gave back the money and he agreed to write a check my father told all the detectives you know detected also his name was mr friedman he was a jew and he said um you know how do i know that the chap won't bounce and he said trust me if you know it's not going to bounce because he's going to go to jail stay in jail for 10 years and that's the story the story is that he got his money back and tom was released and all that ever saw this months or a year before earlier and he asked for his name of his mother than his father and that episode higher detective at the end of the day was that the detective through the work that located him i share the story with you because i'm in chicago here for a wedding at the same time getting a chance to meet people speak to people and it's an opportunity to see how chicago was one of the places which the freedom cadet in 1930 came to it
