Yeshiva for the last 58 years
unbelievable it's a great Merit to be
here within today and I'm going to ask
him questions and discuss with them
different topics of Jewish Education
that's relevant to all people not just
them all Jews who are attending
at schools parents who are parenting
children and grandparents who want to
help their their family so without
further Ado Rabbi eckhouse please take
it away my first question to you is
the impact of the internet age and these
cell phones and all the gadgets how does
that play itself out today in hinoken
education and is it something that we
should embrace or something that we
should reject now I know that in various
communities they have their approach to
it but I wanted to hear from you please
I guess there can be certain
advantages in using it
again as far as
the mice that goes or the rebbies go
however though
um if it's monitored and supervised it's
watched
then obviously it's something that's
good like I know that some rebbies they
have
a certain program where the kids can
call in every night to the ribby and get
the review of the day's learning or so
and it's like at the same time it works
well together at the same time where
um
the the kids are all benefiting from it
but it's under supervision
but in general for a child to have
access to these things the whether it's
uh the internet which I'm not too
familiar with myself
and the other gimmicks that are out
there the uh cell phones and smartphones
I'm sorry not cell phones this
smartphones and things like that beaming
it in the hands of children is dangerous
a bunch of dangerous really
uh and um unfortunately the more I think
you
keep them away from it
or at least if you have it
open to them at least to be watching and
supervising it make sure like I know
some parents they have uh
um so they have time limits on it or so
and they they know what the child is
watching or so okay the child is
watching it fine
uh I don't think that you can leave it
to the child's judgment to the side what
he should watch telling him listen he
should only watch the ramshabigdusha
it's not going to happen holy things
yeah because that's not you're
the eight Sahara is always there and as
you're growing up children are
developing physically and that's the way
the ABC created the person that he has a
drive to the music to certain things
which
at that age is not very healthy for them
and it has to be the child has to
acclimate to them in a decent way in a
proper way and if you leave it to them
to decide to when to use it how to use
it or so
you're actually giving them a weapon
against themselves
I mean I'm just saying as far as I know
from growing up I mean as your child you
have certain inclinations where you want
to
do things which are it's it's a natural
thing in the person's body that he's
growing you know go from from from
childhood to teenage and time to
listening to say into adulthood and so
and the abrish that made this in your
body
and this is something which it's normal
it's natural but it has to be watch it
has to be it's like the guided or so so
it generally to leave it in their hands
I can only it should only be used in the
case where it's going to be experimental
supervision and then it says it could be
used for good the red beheld but you can
take everything that's there and use it
for good right
uh however though again not when they
have the ability to
to use it at that discretion whatever
they want to use it
now what effect it has if that's your
question as far as what effect it has
yeah what what unfortunately in your
classroom what have you seen okay again
I can tell from from uh teaching the
kids in class
I can only tell if a kid comes in and is
tired he's not ready to learn or so
obviously you're going to uh credit it
to the fact that he that he was up late
and what he was doing when he was up
late and if he was watching a television
program I was watching something in the
internet
um
obviously he's not going to be learning
that day and not only is not going to be
learning I would say the the
engine of seeing things of the we have
this this problem when I was a young kid
I was watching listening to the radio
okay radio is not something that really
sticks in your mind it doesn't become
embedded that much
watching TV watching television is
something that
and remains in your mind you can be
sitting in class and you you are
reviewing
the the program that you saw the night
before
and obviously the kid is not going to be
into learning he's not going to be into
learning at all so the Ria today is much
more powerful than the shmia I mean that
it's always been Propel but yes
and I can say I tell you from my own
experience when I was a kid and I
watched the program
that was really
suspenseful or so it just kept on
reappearing in my mind I would say not
only for the next day but for years
later
and
I wish I would never have watched it
and something the and you know I'm
seeing things today is a very very
a very dangerous thing that children are
dangerous whatever goes up on your mind
with the photograph of it a picture of
it
stays with you it's it's something which
you have to really watch very much
okay so I want to go to the next
question the next issue what would seven
two three most important things that
you've experienced in your 58 years to
make a successful classroom because
Baruch Hashem I
I was a student of America's in the
early 1970s and I have a wonderful
wonderful memories we learned very well
he taught us how to learn
Gambar and Tysons it was I think the
first time we really
you know learned how to learn it well
and the class was quiet it was there was
discipline and so in my books and I'm
sure many people that are viewing this
they have fond memories so what are what
what would you tell to mahankham
Educators today are the two three things
that if they if they follow they will be
more successful in having a better
classroom decorum and situation
okay number one
the first and most important thing I
think is again I'm not a professional
I'm just saying from my experience
you have to have a good preparation
you have to be prepared when you're
going in to give a share learning with
the kids whatever you're learning with
them you're teaching them you have to
have a a really a thorough thorough
knowledge of the thing you're teaching
to the point that you're not saying the
gamar inside you're not reading the
Amara and translating and then trying to
figure out what the gemara means but you
have to be know the Gomorrah inside out
before you're going to teach them
yeah it has to be so clear to you like
you know that that there's every step of
the of the whether it's a piece of
Gomorrah or it's a Tyson or so you have
to have every step figured out
calculated how it's going to work how
it's going to be set up
as that I said I told you before I
learned that from a Memphis how he was
really everything was so systematic
everything was like step by step
and uh he build up like every piece of
Gamora was like a building it was built
up piece by piece and that has been your
mind beforehand you can't go into a
class and start teaching if you don't
know the gamari yet so the first thing
is preparation the preparation your
phone preparation thorough preparation
and it you have to understand the gemara
perfectly well that ties as well
and if there's a part that you don't
understand that you don't get and you
say I don't have this link over here
this little part tell the kids I don't
have the link I have to still figure
this out or so sometimes that happens
you have to go into a class that day and
you have to give the share and you have
to sometimes you can maybe say else
we'll come back to this part or so later
on but you got to be thorough and you
can't fool it you can't fool the kids
you got to try to know it thoroughly
inside out okay that's number one the
second thing is when you when you have a
class you're always going to have the
rep was never for parallel classes
smarter and less more
whatever was not for that at all and I'm
not uh maybe I should repeat it at one
point they wanted to make a class
and I think it was the best fifth if I'm
not mistaken whether it was the smarter
girls and there was uh girls
and they proposed it forever
and the rep is said
what's the time what will be what you're
doing the far side of a person far side
of the river
that later on they're going to ask the
parent the person who the Husson's
parents are going to want to find out
about this girl
they're going to go into school how was
she in school well she was in class too
second grade
the second class
so that's she's not such a smart girl
right the rep was not for this parallel
class when you have weaker and better
there have been one for like mixed and I
I always felt that way
yeah the class is mixed now there's
nothing wrong with that you can have
a lot of people feel that the kids that
are losing at that the kids are smart
are losing out they're not losing out
they're not they're not they could maybe
have learned another two lines of gemara
true that's true
but however they have the Mindless that
everything was settled in their mind
much clearer because if you do it
gradually even the smartest person if it
hops fast it goes fast what comes in
quick goes out quick okay if it goes in
slowly gradually you get it and sticks
with you
so when you teach a piece of gamara
tysus whatever it is you have to be able
to explain it in a way as I said if you
do it thoroughly for yourself you're
going to be able to do it in class also
that not only is smart get your bill to
understand it but also the boy the weak
Boy should also be able to understand
that too so what has to be presented in
a way
that like I said you have to break down
the gemara if it's going to be
you've got to explain what ashara is and
what a part is this is a male that's a
female a sharp it's a wild thing and a
par Reza is not that wild and if that's
necessary I don't say you have to
explain it to the class every little
thing but if it needs to be then you
explain it to them so you start off low
and going going up and it's like
explaining your thing piece by piece
that every child should be able to
understand that even the boy should be
able to understand I'm not talking about
a kid who is really has a mental block
or so I'm not I mean you can't always
get everyone but at least the average
child should be able to grasp it and it
should not be for top of the year 70 and
up but but what about the ones that are
tough you do you believe that they'll be
satisfied if you break it down so much
they won't get bored no 100 I've had it
so many times I had brilliant kids in
class and you know who they are some of
them okay
and and I had kids that I asked them to
please take the next grade because they
can do it and they said no they want to
stay stay back because you made it
interesting yeah right right
that's another part to it also if you're
going to break it down it's going to be
interesting and there is a very
important part about making the in the
more interesting yeah I'm in other words
sometimes you have to go away from the
thing like I told you
we take uh
how the fishermen would take the fish
and they would hang it up and string it
on a metal thing what did he do about
that time we were interested we wanted
to hear how the fishermen you know if
we're going to catch fish yeah you put
it up right so right away you brought in
something else from the outside you
connected it but it's interesting the
kid is wants to hear
so of course you have to make an engine
even if it costs a little bit time or so
don't worry about that extra little time
that you're wasting on it it's the main
part it's important that the kid that he
should get a be able to grasp it and not
not tops of the class it has to be for
everyone
any a third point the third point is
that I wanted to say is that you have to
also make sure that the kids uh uh it's
like the get feel that they're free to
ask and encourage them to ask if they
don't understand it ask and try because
you you want to get to every kid you
want to get and
um one of the important things is also
as far as getting every kid is
testing when you get we give a test to
the kids you test them and explain to
them the test is not for the kids it's
for the rebbe when the rabbit gets the
papers back and he sees where the kid is
lacking what's and who's lacking where
they're lacking you know where you got
to correct yourself
so as well one of the rebbies once said
he says
anova's rabbit talushkin or one of the
uh that used to come to Paris
I want to see how the malaman is doing
it says from the kids I can see how the
Muhammad the malamed can only see where
he is faulty or where he's doing well
only from giving a test of the kids
testing them asking them and finding out
then he can knows where he can improve
in his witch part he's lacking in which
part he needs and needs Improvement so
so it's important to know get feedback
from the kids what's going on because
that's what you're going to be able to
correct and improve on and make it
better
but you have to your class is not not
illusion is everybody and you have to
try to guess I'm not saying you know
there may be a kid that's very very very
below that he doesn't belong there's
just sitting there just you know yeah I
mean it could be but he will still pick
up if you're going to be slow I'll pick
up don't work with the only it has to be
across the board you know for everybody
right okay so I want to thank us this is
the first of four parts
series uh so thank you very much and we
will continue soon with our second part
