The Lesson of The Afikoman | What We Hide Our Children Expose

[Music] it's such a fascinating and interesting custom it's been going on who knows hundreds maybe thousands of years in every jewish home in the beginning of the century we take a matzah we break it into two pieces the larger part we hide as the afikaiman but somehow our children are the ones who discover the afikaiman they retrieve it from its hiding place and they are the ones who return the afikoman to us usually for a nice prize in my days the poorer children were happy with a black and white or a danish or a bell bag of potato chips the wealthier kids got a calculator and the really rich kids got a parker pen you remember the parker pen today if you probably give your son a parker pen for that we call him and he'll sue you it's more like a lamborghini a private jet a private yacht a poor family okay iphone 12 they'll settle for but what is really the significance of this of the children finding the afikaiman and returning it to us and perhaps there's a profound symbolism here what we hide our children expose for so many generations we felt compelled to repress so many emotions so many feelings so many experiences not because of any evil intent but simply as a survival skill as a coping mechanism those emotions that were too difficult to handle to bear to contain to deal with we suppressed or we repressed and they have been in hiding for years decades centuries but in our generation our children are finding the afiqans everywhere and they're bringing them all to the floor they somehow cannot deal anymore with all those traumas and all those repressed emotions being hidden everything is now coming out and it's hard for us there's so much resistance things that i have worked so hard consciously or unconsciously to hide to repress the subconscious [Music] now coming out i don't want to see my afikaiman but our children are saying tati mommy if we want to be free if we want to get out of our inner psychological and emotional exile we have to be able to face these secrets we have to be able to look at them we have to be able to create space for them with compassion so that ultimately we can turn them into springboards for awareness and allow these very forces to rejuvenate renew and transform our lives only when we're ready to face our tsufum to face those hidden nafikai months that our children bring to the fore can we all be set free individually and collectively and to clear together next year in jerusalem moment of wisdom some brief and life-changing moments join us subscribe to moment of wisdom channels on youtube telegram facebook instagram and whatsapp
