Kaddish

Dear family friends, I'd like to share with you something I learned which really touched me in a very very deep way and I'm just putting it out there sharing it what I learned. So, as you know, my father unfortunately passed away several months ago and I say Kaddish every day and the discussion came up how many Kaddishes do you have to say for someone that passed away? >> [snorts] >> So, a friend of mine shared with me and he told me that we know that when someone passes away, so you have to go through a purification process till you can come up to the highest level. And the process is for a regular person, it's 11 months and for a not like someone that's a wicked person, 12 months. We assume everyone is regular and no one's really wicked, so you have to go through a purification process, it's 11-month process and it's called you go through Gehenna. In English, it's possibly translated as as hell, purgatory. And that's something the soul goes through every single every single day. Now, what happens is when someone in this world gathers a minyan a quorum of 10 people and says Kaddish you take away one one and a half hours of the person having to go through Gehenna, having to go through hell, to to go through the purification process. >> [snorts] >> Now, the Zohar says that for every Kaddish that you say, whether it's a half Kaddish, a whole Kaddish, a mourner's Kaddish, a Kaddish D'Rabbanan, there's different type of Kaddishim, it takes away 90 minutes, an hour and a half, from the person that day going through hell. So, [snorts] if you say 16 Kaddishim minimum so, 16 * 1.5, that's 24 hours. So, every day that you say 16 Kaddishim in memory of the person that passed away for the first 11 months, you take them away from going to hell. So, if you do it 16 times, guess what? They don't have to go through that thing to hell. You've literally taken somebody out of hell. Chabad custom we try to do 18, 19 just to make sure we buffer it up a little bit. But, the point is you see how powerful it is to say Kaddish, to hear Kaddish, to answer amen to Kaddish cuz you're participating in taking someone out for every Kaddish, an hour and a half. And every single day between Shacharit, Mincha, Maariv, you have easy, you have uh Chabad custom you have 18, 19 on on on Mondays and Thursdays, there's an extra Kaddish by the Torah, etc. Now, you can ask what happens on Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh. And the answer is on Shabbos and Rosh Chodesh, Gehenna, hell is closed. So, they only they don't need that that exemption, it's still important to do an extra Kaddish. They go to a higher level. But, just remember, when you say Kaddish or you hear someone saying Kaddish, you're saying amen, the power and the impact that you're accomplishing for the soul that passed away is huge.
