it's time for Rabbi minkowitz weekly
Torah lesson a place where life's most
difficult questions are answered here
with his spiritual perspective and
insight Rabbi minkowitz welcome to this
week's Torah lesson this week's Torah
portion is par the question of the week
is what is the difference between
Holiness and
godliness so in this week's Torah
portion par the Torah portion opens with
one of the 10 tests that God tested
Abraham
God says to
Abraham you are to
leave you're to leave your
land the place you were born your
father's home to the land that I will
show you so the commentaries all ask
it's enough if God said leave and go
well I'll show you why specifically from
the land the place you were brought up
and from your father's home
so our commentaries mystical
commentaries explain to us that this
test was one of the most profound tests
for Abraham because we know Abraham was
a holy Jew he's the one that recognized
God he served God he connected with God
and he inspired people to follow God but
God comes to Abraham and he says you're
a great man I know that you've dedicated
to me you know what I want and you do
what I want you understand what I want
you feel what I want and you inspire
people to do what I want however here is
a fine line God says to him everything
you did till now was 100% beautiful and
holy it was extremely holy however all
these ideas and thoughts came because
you thought about them and you thought
it was a great idea and it was a great
idea but the difference is they were not
ones that I commanded you to do so
in other words even though Abraham
before this test and after the test
still do the same actions he still
connected with God he still prayed to
God he still served God he still did
mitzvot and he still inspired people to
follow God but here was the fine
difference up until this
test Abraham did what he did because it
made sense and he felt right and he was
right he was connected to what God
wanted after this test the the same Act
the difference was he was doing it
because God asked him to do so as the
Torah tells
us the same word the same word you're
going to the same will but the
difference is I share a record that I'm
going to show you now a lot of times in
life we have great ideas but as long as
it's our idea we're excited to do it the
minute someone else tells us to do so
all of a sudden we start questioning is
it good should I should I do it
shouldn't I do it and and the truth is
that what's really happening at that
moment it's the evil inclination getting
you to stop doing it because someone
else to ask you to do so and that's the
same thing what happens we can come up
with all these great holy ideas to do
but there are ideas the minute we are
doing something because God wants us to
do so we have resistance from the evil
inclination and we're able to overcome
that evil Incarnation we're able to do
what God wants then we can be a
true doing what Hashem wants so to
answer the question what what is the
difference between Holiness and
godliness Holiness is doing beautiful
things nice things special things but
they were all our our ideas inspired by
us godliness is when we do the same acts
but we're doing it because God commanded
us to do so and then it
becomes a Godly act this week's Torah
lesson is dedicated to the memory of
Bor may his soul be elevated by the
