I know a lady who was a Holocaust
survivor. She had immigrated from Poland
after the war and in her golden years,
well into her 80s, she moved together
with her children and what one day she
says to her daughter-in-law, I need 24
rolls of toilet paper, please. The
daughter-in-law thinks to herself,
that's interesting, but sure. She gets
her the toilet paper and this senior
lady proceeds to put the toilet paper
rolls in the window seal. She says,
"Mom, what are you doing?" She says, "I
needed to block the sun. It's too
sunny." Imagine rather than saying to
her daughter-in-law, "I need toilet
paper." She said, "I need to block the
sun." The daughter-in-law probably would
have gotten her a sun shade, would have
been cheaper, would have been more
effective. Because this lady strategized
rather than stated her desire, she found
a strategy that was not very effective
and not very efficient. I see this all
the time with couples when they go
through difficult times and there's
feelings of hurt, pain, betrayal,
distrust, and they want to amend the
relationship. The first thing they try
to do is strategize. We need to work on
communication. We need to do this. We
need to do that. They keep focusing on
what they need to do. And they might be
right. They might be wrong. But if they
figure out what they're truly trying to
accomplish deep within, what they're
going to discover is clarity and or they
will more likely reach the correct and
most efficient and effective strategy.
