Rabbi Eliezer Krohn: A Woman’s Guide to Practical Halachah

evening everyone welcome to tonight's very very special event uh my name is rob yeah but vancouver from the kazakh organization such a great honor to moderate tonight's very special program a very unique program where we're going to be greatly honored to have a great interview with rabbi eliasa chrome first of all welcome our viewers to come thank you very much thank you for having me once okay wow so you're starting from the from the way beginning backtracking way before my safer my my growing up in my parents house my father and and my mother it was it's it was incredible having having and present you know my father as as my father you know you you really touched upon because we're connecting you know to art scroll over here but my father was a phenomenal dad a phenomenal father at home a great great great mechanic and way before he became very very famous with the market series and and and you know the prismila safer was the first safer that he put out for art school but he became famous you know through the maggot series he he was a great father and he would spend time with us and he raised us he would learn with us he would play basketball with us um in those days i much more appreciated when he played basketball and baseball with me than when he learned with me we it depends who you know who got to decide what we do if he got to the science then we learned together if i decided and we play basketball together but he he raised he always felt that no matter even if you know he's writing he's speaking he's on the phone with so many different people in regards to shalom bias and and and and inspiration and the family always came first the family always came first and i'll tell you an amazing story that happened with me that years ago uh it was about maybe 10 10 years ago 10 12 years ago i called my father i had to speak to him about something and i always called his cell phone because he's always around traveling doing doing grissom and checking babies and and and speaking so i don't know if he's home or if he's not home so i always called the cell phone so one time i called his cell phone just to speak to him about something it wasn't wasn't so important but i just needed to talk to him about something and i and ends up he was home he was home and while i'm talking to him i hear the the home phone ring in the background and my father said oh hold on one second he picks up the phone and he comes back on on the phone like 20 seconds later i said oh who was that he said i was summoned for maritime i told them i told them i'll speak to them later i said you know i'll call you back later i'll you know we could talk later it's not so important he said no no it's fine i'll speak to him later i'm talking to you now a couple minutes later the phone rings again he says oh hold on one second you know my father is very busy and he and 20 seconds later he's back on the phone i said who is that he said oh that was someone from south africa but i told him i'll speak to him later i said todd you know really you could you could talk to them you know we could talk later it's not so important so my father said something that i'll never forget my father said i'm talking to you so to now to me you're the most important person those other people could wait and and he said now i'm talking to you and you know everybody knows my father as that he's so so involved in the clown which is true but family family was always first and yes it is true that a lot of times we you know the family sacrificed um not having them for shabbos because my father's speaking in this hotel and he's going here and he's going there and he wasn't home and we're not but that's that's part of our sacrifice for chloe saw we were raised at yes family is first but we sacrificed four claw you saw you know a lot of times i get phone calls i answer shyless hashem i have this close you know to to try to help people in halacha on the phone and yeah sometimes it does interfere with you know with family time i try not i try to put you know family first but sometimes the phone calls take longer than expected but that's the way we were raised that we we you know on behalf of clyoswell to help for the cloud that's something that was just ingrained in us both by my father and and my mother as well wow beautiful always about about how you are whatever's present that that's the current conduction even though you're saying the calls from eric cistrell or whatever it is whatever is the president that that's what's the most important thing beautiful the first responsibility is to your children that that's that's for certain and uh you know it's a great lesson for myself and all my siblings and for everybody that the running around and tested organizations it's all great but that's it starts at home right that's what they say so tessa starts at home that that's for certain yeah beautiful and and and touching up upon you you're mentioning about about um about about your father's and and and your mother's amazing work for for the cloud so so what what gave you the push to to to to put out this uh this this amazing uh work that everyone everyone should get that will uh they should publish it like like what was it just like it was just like it was just a dream and then okay i gotta do it now like what happened i i never and i didn't dream of the safer at first i've had this list for for 10 years now teaching girls and teaching married women and i teach and i found right away that women girls are thirsty for practical clear halacha you know the men they they appreciate that also but they like the sugiya they like to know you know the background and how how do we how how do we get to to the to the final and sometimes you know you you learn so much of the gemara and the resha name and and then it falls by the wayside okay so what what do you do what practically what do you do what do you do if this happens what do you do if that happens when women many times they're more practical oriented and they they don't necessarily have to hear all the background they need they want to know what to do is is this allowed is this not allowed and i always say that so much of my preparation when i give my classes is is what not to say what not to say because anyone could really just open up a mishnabura and just start reading and just teach out of the mishnabura but there's a lot of cases in the mishibura that are not so common doesn't come up very often and it's just gonna confuse people and it's just it's too much it's too much so when i was teaching aloha i i saw how the girls and the women they were thirsty for them and i was inspired to you know put it down on paper short concise practical local every topic in my safer which well you know we'll talk about more i'm sure every topic could have could be a safer by itself in that topic but so much of it is not so common it's not so relevant and it's this is you know the clear bottom line a lot of times there's a much locus but this but clear bottom line just to guide um a woman in the in the practical law of daily daily life amazing and and and and and now that's to transition forward that now actually get into the same fur so so it's it's about as as it says on on the cover of the safe right about about it that's that that's not how that it's it's not just like hawaii for like one time of the year but it's really throughout the journey throughout the entire year so so um so is there um some alakaz that that may be um that uh differentiate this uh this book from maybe others or what would you say is the overall flow of the book itself what would you say um so that's a good question so i'll answer that with just a little bit of a of a background when i spoke to up to diaz larowicz in regards to you know the idea of publishing this safer i really had in mind um to have a safer of a halacha a day of like a short paragraph or two that women could learn day after day and i would have 365 different passages and ragday told me that that's not a good idea and he's the expert he says it's not going to sell it's a it's it's it's not um you know two halachos a day but but other than that it's not going to be successful it has to be a halacha safer that is written in chapter form and going by by topics another thing um [Music] told me was that you need to have a rav look it over he says nobody knows you just yet mr sham in the future but nobody knows you yet you can't just come out with a safer in you have to have a ex a distinguished love who's well known who's able to you know to look it over and give his stamp of approval on it and he said and we thought of my father actually thought of this idea of rabbi obam isaac obama from from queens from hugon hills that i'm sure you are uh familiar with um and robert obama guided me which topics to do and which topics to cover and which topics not to cover and rebel obama said that there are some topics that are just like a topic by itself so yeah by itself he says you shouldn't do the llama test malachos you shouldn't do um cashews in the kitchen you shouldn't do you know the brachos the the beer about you know shahakal and hamati and those types of things that it needs to be the halacha that comes up day by day without being a specific topic so what we worked on and what i decided and he agreed was the halal when you wake up in the morning for a woman a very very important we have a whole section of all the yemen tavern when it comes to women um we still for the yamanta we have rosh hashanah and yum kippur and sukkah specifically you think or shabbos you know that it's all about the llama test there's so much of the positive habakkuk i i i i get bored hashem i get hello questions on how fresh is hollow all the time how much dough um what happens if i'm only doing half of the the the the batter now and half later and and and and let's say um let's say i i how do i burn the challah do i i'm splitting it up amongst different families and kiddish there's so many different offers in regards to shabbos and and and then i have like a separate section on just all various alohas but that are real so relevant day to day when it comes to ribbus you know women borrow things amongst neighbors all the time they borrow um you know a loaf of bread they borrow a cup of sugar and then they return a bigger bag of sugar and you know women go to the store they send on the whatsapp chat um anybody need anything in the store oh please get me this so you lay out twenty dollars how much does it really look at the receipt really it was 19.72 cents so you come back to your neighbor you give back the oh it was 19 and 72 cents okay here's 20 do you have 28 cents change no i don't know oh don't worry about it just keep the extra 28 cents it's not a problem wait a second is that that could be ribose that could be that could be interest so that's a very very practical question so i'm not going to tell you what the answer is you have to you have to you have to get to say i don't want to tell everybody you have to get the safer to see what the answer is women are in charge you know we have leftovers from shabbos so i don't know about your family but in my family my kids complain when we have leftovers on sunday night i complained growing up when we had leftovers sunday night after sunday night leftovers so there's still leftovers so am i allowed to throw it out it's totally edible am i allowed to throw it out is that baltachus is that a pro so or do i have to like keep it in my refrigerator until until it gets moldy and spoils that's a very very relevant question for women it's relevant for men also but women are in charge of the kitchen we have a whole section on keyboard aim all section of sheamus magazines right we have the mishpacha magazine and the ami magazine and the bina magazine and the yated and the hamudiya what's done with those though there's torah in it right this div ray torah in it on the parsha is that allowed to be thrown in the garbage is that allowed to be is that allowed to be brought in the bathroom what is that allowed to be kept on the floor someone might step on it so these are all relevant questions that are just around the house they i didn't tell you the answer to any of these questions but the old so many things that as i learned them myself i was just fascinated that how much there is that's so just so so relevant beautiful we're definitely in this oh my god i'm like hey my head is i think we just went around the world in like 80 days or i'm actually 365 days but 365 days that's right but uh yeah somebody was such a vast array of topics and and would you say that that that uh would you recommend that maybe there would there would be a a little ls constructed thing that may be uh couples we should just convert it to together i know it's geared for women but when you're saying that they're saying that some of us they're there or more general meaning whether if i have a sandwich supplies the same thing to me right so that's a very good question it's a very good question and i had more than one discussion with rob goddard lotto it's about this question because when we were discussing which topics to put in so let's say something like the topic of keeper of aim or like you said the topic of baltachnas the topic of sheamus that's not only for women um i have a chapter on the logos of myself what are you allowed to use money for chinese auctions for myself or not so a lot of the halachos are very very relevant for men and yes definitely husbands and wives can learn it together you could learn it at the shabbos table just read one or two paragraphs every shabbos or every by every dinner table every supper table so it's definitely things that are relevant for men as well and that was a discussion you know what should we put in should we only put in things that are specifically geared for women so i i went out over abdalia on a few occasions like let's say the halachus of maison i i get so many questions about the halachus of myself from women but it's relevant for men also but i'm i told you guidalia i said trust me this is these are the questions i get these are what girls want to know especially single girls when you know they they go they have babysitting do i have to give 10 percent to tsudako so so the questions that i i get most common those are the questions those are the topics i put in even though it's really relevant to men after i finished everything daisodawa said um you have to have a chapter on avelus but not a whole save for unavailable it's just one chapter the basic kalajos in the kitchen laundry things that are specifically um you know related to women but the answer is yes that definitely men can gain from it and you'll notice that there's footnotes on the bottom but there's small footnotes not long footnotes like we have in others farm that are phenomenal but those footnotes even if they're in english they're really meant for men they're really meant for men because it's just too long it's it's too much these footnotes are short just a few words just where did i get it from this way if anybody has a doubt hey where did robert cronin get that from so this way their husband or their brother or their son or their father can look up the sources i don't really expect women to go searching in the mishna brewer or in the pesky chuvas you know in these types of farm that's not generally what what they do but if somebody where did he get this from so there's the source at least i have the source and then anybody who wants to go look it up can look it up and in the preface i put my email address if anybody has any questions or comments they can email me you know if they have uh and if they want to know their sources for something but but it's mainly geared towards women but certainly certainly there's a lot that men that men could gain from beautiful and um and as you're discussing about about so what would you say that that that that that there's less of a of a focus or i guess i'll say in the positive is there more of a focus let's say um like like what would you say your approach is like i know you talk about you you you talking about um the jewish laws that allah throughout the year what what was your approach let's say like like in the the suggest of the of the topics like are you just going like okay like like like straight away okay fine like oh when you when you have uh which feel okay fine you have to do this you can't do that whatever is or is it just or are you giving some background are you going with the concern in the background what's the it's it's a very good question i i really i purposely in the safer i did not get into the background i usually did not get into the background maybe in one or two occasions when it really made a difference when i give class um in the schools where i teach and to the married women there i do get into the background because that's part of giving a class especially when it's in a school as a rebbe i don't just jump in i don't just jump in right away to the practical but in the safe air yes in the safer it is just the practical straightforward we mentioned about um you know we have the cash ring the kitchen for before pesach so there's a lot of background hagala libun but i just it's just practical tavi last caleb right title and caitlyn when a person buys a new utensil from a non-jew a non-jewish store so it has to go to the calendar so there's a lot of background when it comes to that but the chapter in my savior is just straightforward what needs to have tavila what doesn't what needs a barakah you know taking off the stickers and it's really i focused just on on the practical with you know with with the footnotes um um you know if anybody wants to look whatever wants to look into into the background you know i've said many times because you know the safer took so much work if i would have known in advance how many hours this it would take me and how much time i spent on on the safer i never would have written the safer i never would have written to say for there's no way i would have written this if i would have known how many hours of my time it would take up but then i always add that and therefore i'm happy that i did not know how many hours it was going to take because i never would have done it but of course now that i did it i'm so so so happy i'm running on adrenaline today i went to art school you know to pick up a few boxes and i made a shakianu um and my father was on the phone and he said amane and one of the sponsors of the safer was was on my phone and and somebody else and we had two phones there and they said amane to the to the shahianu and i have a chapter on the halals of saying amane are you allowed to say a main over the telephone so i mean now i told you the answer that we've asked and the answer is yes but um but that's also so you know such relevant alohas but i and it took so much of my time you know not just with rabbi obam but there was another of robert leschwitz who went through it i was on the phone with him for so many hours going through things fine-tuning and every time any time we had a disagreement that we couldn't decide between each other so then we went to rabbi obama to decide who's right sometimes i was right sometimes he was right and and that fine-tuned it and then art scroll sent four women at four different times mrs eisner mrs dick mrs finkelman and mrs stern that went through the safer from a woman's perspective editing and a woman's perspective and sometimes they said well you can't write this i never heard of this i said just because you never heard of doesn't mean that it's not correct i said this is the and and but they really all four of them did such a phenomenal job taking out what's not supposed to be there adding things with my permission of course what really should be there making it clear making it crystal crystal clear beautiful and before we get to the to the last question for tonight you were mentioning about about rav obama as you're mentioning we definitely have a personal connection i'm saying kazakh we have that he's the urbanites you know for so many years um and and um so you're mentioning a little bit about them i guess if you could just delve into you were just mentioning what was the other rabbi's name that you were going through so you're saying that the process the process was that you and robert lester's that you would like you would like uh come together and then is that is that how it went and then and then you went through album and say is this is this uh presentable so first so first robin obama went through it artichoke wanted him to go through a second time and when they asked him to go through it a third time they eventually they he said listen i went through it twice already it's great you know but so first of all obama went went through it twice then they had robbie lesquez go through it and there was a little bit of a different job rabbi leschwitz was like really like tearing it apart and looking up all the sources um that was necessary and he came back to me and he said okay we have to talk on the phone i was on the phone with rubble squids for many many many many hours and there were things that he was right i admitted right away a mistake that i made and something that i missed or something that he added and he was phenomenal i have such a curious attitude to him and there were times where he said wait this is wrong and i defended myself and i explained no no no this is so sometimes he agreed to me sometimes i agreed to him sometimes he just clarified you know the way to write things and yes there were times where we had a stalemate where i said no no i'm right this is the and he said no no you're wrong this is and we we agreed that we're going to go to rabbi obama you know we'll go to rabbi alba and see what he says and some of the time rabbi said no you could leave it the way it is it's fine you could leave it the way it is and then sometimes robert said no you should switch it you're right you know this is you should hack a switch it and and um and and but that that's when that's art scroll for you because if i would have printed the safer by myself then you know i just would have had my own perspective on it but halacha is not like that you need to speak it over with other people and there's nothing to be embarrassed about one of my rebellion who's a rebbie and landers in in kugan hills or si soko so yeah i was his talmud for two years so not in and i went to landers once a week and he was my rebbe and he told me something great he said as a rev and as a pasik he said you have to discuss halacha with other abundant he said it's just like a doctor if you if a person goes to a doctor doctors always speak things over with other doctors and other surgeons maybe they have another idea maybe they have a better idea they get advice from them that's that doesn't mean that they're a bad doctor that means they're a good doctor that they're not embarrassed and you know they're not too hoody to talk it over with others he says a rav also has to do that you don't have to know everything all by yourself you have to go and and and art scroll gave me you know robert obam and robert lescott's and they were phenomenal they were they were mama's phenomenal amazing and i guess i guess if um maybe he'll just uh to to wrap us up for tonight would you be able to just it may be uh an idea maybe something that that we didn't speak about or something that that that uh either from the safer or or maybe just from from hawakkas just that that we should touch upon over here uh i'll give you two two examples that in my safer hashem anyone who buys it you'll see it in the safer that um that are are so important because that that a lot of people don't realize number one a woman again it's a chapter for te fila for women so the the brahmos of krishna what are the brachus of krishma which means after yeshtabach in the morning twila does there's a r and avaraba those brachos and the bracha after krishna right barakata shamga so women are not obligated to recite those brachas they can and they're encouraged to recite those brachas but they're not obligated because it's only at a set time so if it's only at a set time the mitsubisha says non-grammar so they're not obligated to recite those broncos what happens and this happens very often you have a girl she's in high school it's a sunday morning she sleeps late she doesn't have school on sunday and she wakes up late and she davens after samantha after his mansfield which means after four hours into the day do you know that many poiskin rabbusner absalom azam and erbach they say that after four hours into the day a girl should not say those brachas of krishna they should skip it they should skip it now the truth is the shochonara does say that already but the beer allah over there says that that's all that that's that if it was an anus if it was a mistake you overslept then you are allowed to so these places are saying that that's only for men and not for women so right there that's like a little bit of background that i leave out of this 80 frame because that's already too confusing i just said it very quickly because you're a man so you know you could follow and a woman could also follow but it's too much for the safer so i just practically i tell i write in the savior that many plays come home that they cannot save those brahos they go from ishtaba and they skip and they skip straight to krishna and then after hashem ms they go straight to shema esri that's a mind-boggling that a lot of people don't realize and that's something that's food for thought that a girl certainly needs to know a lot of times a woman is busy with her children and she's getting them off to school she packs their lunches she gets them dressed and then she has to get dressed and then she has to run to work by the time she gets a chance to diamond it could be after his mansfiela it's a very very important aloha to know in regards to hohastrila besides everything in are they obligated are they obligated and halal and all those types of that's just one halacha that i felt was such an eye-opener um in in the in the in the safer another halacha that i spent hours on just two lines in the safer hours and hours and hours and anybody who reads it maybe you'll appreciate it now what happens we know that when a person wakes up in the morning they have to wash neglect right they wash nithilatya right left right left right left to get rid of the the the spiritual impurity on their hands so what happens if somebody wakes up in the middle of the night you know two two o'clock in the morning and they use the bathroom this happens to a lot of people all the time it it it happens very often two o'clock in the morning you go to the bathroom and then you go back to sleep when you wash your hands you have to say ashiyatsan you have to say the brachavasiats are two o'clock in the morning do you have to wash megelvasar before you do that now you have to wash your hands but can you just open up the faucet and wash your hands do we say that listen it's in the middle of the night you have to wash nithilatyadayam with a cup on the right left or do we say no no no you don't have to do that until the morning once you wake up in the morning you're up for the day then you have to wash the tilapia but in the middle of the night you don't have to just open up the faucet like regular that's a great question and that happens to people all the time there are people there's some people that just like sleep straight through the night my kids do that they just sleep three through the night a lot of times people wake up in the middle that is a halacha that believe it or not is unclear the the swarm right that it's unclear what absalom is opinion is on the matter and i discussed this with rabbi obama what exactly to write in such a case these are you know people don't necessarily think of they just you go through the day and there's so many things that we just do by road and even if we one time learnt these but but you know we we don't we don't pay attention to it um as often perhaps as we should and so much of this safer i wrote in the preface that this safer is is not necessary not making it that you never have to call a rabbi and ask a question you're supposed to continue to call your love call your rabbi and ask allah questions that we we encourage that whoever your rabbi is but but at least to to get us thinking at least at the very least against thinking of these halachos of what am i supposed to do what am i not supposed to do can i can i do something different in tough situations this is this is how we lead this is how we run our life we're always supposed to be thinking of and the way we think of a cut is boroku and we're busy we're busy with work we're busy with our family we're busy sleeping we're busy eating everybody's busy but we have to find time for hashem in our lives for our in our busy lives as well and the way we do that is the way we do that is because governs from the moment we wake up until the moment we go to sleep and the entire time and uh that that that's what that that's what draws me so much so much to halacha that uh to be able to think of a kurdish boroku all day long because you want to make sure that you follow the correct aloha amazing it and and i'm just i just had one quick question just just so just a practical question about the practical safeware um would you say that that that um that sometimes sometimes you just want to open up the safe if you want to open up uh whether it's an inspirational book and you just want you just want to sit there for a whole shabbos and you just want to go through the whole thing from cover to cover and sometimes sometimes you don't want to do that so what would you say a practical once everyone gets this is there how would practically should they go through what would you recommend one sitting or should we do it like you said in the beginning and we should just do it we should do one on one on luck i like 365 uh i i i think that you know the gemara navigator i think it's daffy tess says that ain't on the loymond alabama malcolm shall that a person can learn what they're interested in they want to learn what they're excited to learn if you're not in the mood of learning that particular topic then then don't learn that topic learn something else so there's some people that you know they want to start from page one that's what gives them that's what keeps them focused from page one there's some people that they can't they don't want to do they're not interested let page one you know from the beginning it starts with waking up in the morning i don't know i'm interested right now when learning the halal tavila's caleb or of keeper aim or ribbus so whatever a person is interested in that moment and i think the beauty of the setup like like like rav godai's lotto had said is it could be done in either way you could just open up a chapter it's very organized in each chapter separately and you can just open up there's some chapters that are only a few pages and you can just open it up and read the everything that we have to say about that particular topic but it could also be done from the beginning straight and it might be good to do both it might be good to do both um you know sometimes you start from page one but then you know you have a few minutes here and there to just open it up and it's always good to review i always have to review i don't have a great memory i don't remember everything so i have to you have to review so you can do both have a system we're starting from page one i think there's approximately 300 pages so you start from day one and but also at the shabbos table you could just pick a topic you could ask your kids around the table okay what topic do you want to learn about tonight i want to do the locals of shabbos i want to do the locals of brahos we have chapters on the barack of um and and other you know various broncos but not the regular brexit um and what whatever whatever they're interested in it's it's set up in a way that either one they could just you know pop open to any page at any time amazing so everyone's reminded thank you so much everybody else that comes for years for your tremendous words and how you do my kaiser and uh we want it we want our mother one
