okay good morning bogartov sorry we're a
couple of moments late but glad that you
are here
i'm actually shocked and stunned when
people show up not because everybody
knows how to make pesox so well but
every year i essentially say the same
thing
and i'm tempted to just pray press play
on last year's pre-pesach workshop but
there are new questions
that arise and there are people making
pesach for the first time and so it's my
pleasure
and privilege to go through this
exercise together it's part of the
healthy and holy work it's part of the
holy avodah of preparing for pesach and
that's one of the points that i want to
make together this morning
is that
rather than view what we're about to
discuss and spend our time on as a
burden
it's a privilege
it's incredible opportunity you know you
could do the exact same activity
and you can be doing it reluctantly
hesitantly and bearing a burden or you
can be doing it with excitement and as a
privilege as if you're running to
something i'm trying to think of an
example or a metaphor for that you know
it occurred to me you're gonna have to
go on a long walk in our jewish journey
in which you feel you're heartbeat all
along you feel your pulse you feel how
exhausting it is you're miserable you're
resentful you're anger and you wish it
was over or if somebody says to you
you've won the lottery i have a billion
dollar check waiting for you you've got
to walk a certain distance to go get it
you're going to hop and you're going to
skip and you're going to jump and you're
going to sing and you're going to
whistle and you're going to say i don't
even notice how difficult how hot how
long the walk is it's all the context in
which we see something and why we want
to be doing it and if we envision and if
we picture that it's an incredible
source of reward then we're happy to do
it and if it's absent of meaning and
purpose it feels like a burden
and so i think that attitude when it
comes to pesach is critically important
but let's get started i want to first of
all thank our sponsors
in memory of his beloved mother
ravi pomeranz who is on the third day of
pesach thank you so much for sponsoring
this pesach made easy workshop hopefully
uh nishamula and aliyah and this of all
the hours saved of spring cleaning
rather than of pre-pesach planning and
that simchas yantef the joy and the
happiness that people can come into
yantev with should be a great great
swiss so as i mentioned even before we
dive into the specifics which we're
going to do our normal tour of the house
then we're going to take a tour of the
kitchen we'll take a tour of the
supermarket and go on lots of tours
together today you know to be tested for
corona before or after this tour so
we're gonna go on this tour together uh
before we dive into the tour itself is
to take that step back and again the
attitude i mentioned last week in one of
our shiurim
i think without exaggeration i could say
that how our children perceive what they
hear us and what our attitude is as we
prepare for pesach can literally have an
impact on whether they will be from or
not
if we want inspired and passionate and
devoted
children and grandchildren then they
need to hear us have a love and a
geshmach and an excitement and an energy
and an enthusiasm when it comes to
preparing for pesach though we countdown
to when that opportunity arrives that we
can't wait to be able to go through the
holy work of cleaning for pesach and if
the hero is miserable and forbisten and
negative and complaining then they're
going to say what do i need it and what
do i want it
if they hear us acting like we're slaves
rather than free people then they're
going to choose what they perceive as
freedom over our slavery
so it's so important like everything
else that we do before one engages in a
mitzvah you say
this is a bracha that is recited
on that mitzvah
and there is no mitzvah there is no
barakah rather that we recite on
cleaning for pesach in a sense there is
in antiquity maybe they first cleaned
badika's comments that was the search
and destroy mission was the night before
pesach and you make abraham your
comments there is a bracha we don't say
abraca when you start already say some
quest torah you start already on motse
hanukkah or you start already purim
there is no bracha on cleaning but our
mindset and the kavanagh and what the
bracha is meant to do why do we say
abraca before we do a mitzvah we're
focusing ourselves we're making a
declaration that we're going to be
mindful i'm not just waving four weird
species
i'm taking my spine and my heart and my
eyes and my lips i'm taking the four
kinds of jew i center myself i ground
myself i calibrate myself you make a
bracha before the chauffeur and i
brought them for you like candles and i
brought up before you put on fellaini
why do we make that bracha
center i'm grounding myself i'm about to
do is holy activity it's not just it's
not just random and it's not just
mundane it's holy and it's elevated and
i'm grounded and i'm centered and i'm
thoughtful and i'm mindful and i'm
conscious and conscientious as i do it
and the same attitude and consciousness
is what we need to bring towards this
mission of cleaning and preparing our
house for pesach pesach is this yanta
for freedom and liberation it is this
holiday that is transformational it is
the holiday of faith and i'm not just
looking for comments throughout my house
i'm looking for what it's represents
is the ego and says arrogance and says
temptation and desire and hamas is
addiction and
is all that is inflated in my life that
needs to be deflated not like tom
brady's football but deflated in the
sense of humility deflated with a sense
of modesty
and can anyone say that our house is
clean from muhammad
i don't mean leaven i don't mean
bread i don't mean of the five grains i
mean spiritual comets
our homes from one pesach to the next
become unfortunately they become filled
because we're humans not because we're
bad people everybody's human so maybe
there was gossip shared around our table
maybe there was envy for what our
neighbor has maybe there was arrogance
or ego that got in the way of healthy
relationships in that home and from that
home towards others that means that
there's spiritual comments all over and
when we are looking and searching and
when we are destroying the comments what
we are saying is not only physically we
are collecting muhammad which is 11
which is that which is inflated
rabbi is like muhammad to the sahara
that's why hashem what do you want from
us so worship what can we do there is
this leaven inside ourselves there's an
ego there's arrogance there's a sense of
self in us
and that's a barrier it's a boundary it
struggles we are contaminated with it
when we do vidiq's comments in my home
and i know this is not why you're here
so i'm not going to belabor this point
but i think this introduction in this
context are critical
because to obsess about is tom's good or
no good how do you kasha the carrick
this year and is this product and and
not to see the big picture and not to
zoom out that lens and understand why am
i doing this what am i trying to achieve
what feeling am i seeking to generate
what environment am i trying to create
for my family
is one of the greatest disservices that
we've had
to focus on the on the micro
and to be obsessed with the minutia and
to never talk about and to never center
ourselves first by establishing why are
we doing this and what are we trying to
achieve is to lose the forest of the
trees is to violate the whole reason
it's to go from freedom to slavery when
we're supposed to be going from slavery
to freedom so in our home on
tonight this is not our idea it comes to
shame
and others we have this little talk with
all the children when they hide the
comments and when we go look for it that
our mindfulness and our thoughtfulness
as we find that
in each of their bedrooms in each of our
bedrooms and in the shared space in our
home is that we're each identifying what
is the comments for me this year what do
i need to work on what am i trying to
purge or get rid of what am i trying to
obliterate or destroy
what do i need to meet fire with fire
what fire is raging inside me in the
wrong way that i need to throw it in a
fire
so that fire can meet fire and destroy
it what do i need to work on am i
jealous my envious my arrogant am i
egotistical am i looking at am i saying
am i listening to the wrong things am i
reading the wrong things what do i need
to work on that i need to get rid of and
my kids when they each hide their piece
of comments they think of that thing and
then we search for it and the next day
and the next morning and everybody says
when we come and we burn the muhammad we
all re-articulate and we recite what the
hamitz is that we're working on what it
represents and then each takes their
comments and throws it in the fire
you understand how transformational how
impactful that is it's not just hurry
everybody we have to do this quick quiz
comments before we can have fun we got
to get this thing out of the way where
did you hide it give me the hint i don't
want to do it take as much quickly as we
can but there's a spiritual there's a
metaphysical
there's something big that's happening
there's not just a spring cleaning we're
not just cleaning our house physically
we are cleaning our house
spiritually whether you live with a big
family and many people whether you live
alone
we are cleaning our house we're cleaning
it out from that negativity we're
turning that corner it's going to be a
place of light and a place of positivity
and a place of modesty these things are
so so important
even though that's not why you're here
and i'm getting the look on your faces
that it's time to move on but this is my
this is my big hang up i just very
quickly the haggadah says the russia we
sit at the table the russia's mava does
this work for you and rabideran of
baylor
he asks tori asks
really
pesach knight that's when the russia is
bothered tisha bobby's okay with yom
kippur fasting 25 hours he gets through
him
sitting in trouble all day rosh hashanah
that he doesn't ask questions about but
you're about to have four cups of wine
and delicious food and you're gonna bet
to sit and enjoy the whole night family
talking that's why he's asking
on a night of four cups of wine that's
when he's bothered really
so you know what he says
he says we have it wrong we think the
russia is asking
us
what is this whole seder what is this
but he's not asking finally he's sitting
down and he's looking at his mother and
his father and he's saying
all i've heard you do for the last 30
days is kract and complain and grunt and
sigh and moan and groan and be miserable
what is the point of all this work for
you
so do we want our children to be a
russia do we want them to turn into a
russia because they see us as
our yiddish is an avodah
is it all miserable and negative and are
we off
you know or are we supposed to come to
the table
as i like to say the only bitter thing
at the pesach cedar table is supposed to
be the herbs not the people
leave the bitterness find the freedom
and the joy and the geshmak and what
we're all trying to create what we're
all trying to achieve leave that sense
of an avodah understand that when i'm
doing it towards a holy mission and a
holy purpose
it's a whole different attitude i
personally have never been pregnant i've
been around somebody who was several
times
and it's uncomfortable and it's painful
and labor pains are incredibly
uncomfortable but to birth a healthy
child
what a person is willing to endure to
undergo
so there is some pain and discomfort
before pesach in that process but it's
to birth the yantaf of pesach it's not
to arrive at the table of shemata it's
to arrive at the table a free person
with a home that is clean and pristine
and not contaminated with ego and
arrogance and envy
and all the things that bring us down to
purge and to get rid of that and to come
and arrive at the table in the pure way
the great rabbit that's kodash the
piazzetta i didn't see this inside i saw
someone quote it if i plan to look for
it apparently says
that a jew can only connect to the inner
essence of pesach through that scrubbing
and cleaning through that preparing and
getting ready why
just like a human being has within our
body all these organs but we don't know
they're there there's a heart that's
beating but we're not really aware of it
we have lungs that are breathing but
we're not really aware of it you know
what happens then when you work when you
press them if you go for a run around
the circle
it's a gilgal somebody who worked hard
for pesach who's not happy with me let's
fly
so then what happens you go for a run
around the circle and all of a sudden
when you're done your heart's beating
and your lungs are working overtime
and by working by pressing yourself now
you're highly aware of all the organs
inside your body
so holy piazzetsna says
only time to find the hidden holiness of
pesach is by working you got to get the
spiritual organs working when the
spiritual organs are pumping and working
that's when you tap into the holiness
and the beauty of pesach and that's what
we're trying to do and that's what we're
trying to achieve stay mindful stay
focused do what you have to hinden
let's get ready we're about to clean for
pesach get ready we're about to cook and
kasha for pesach get ready here's what
we're doing and why we're doing it and
it transforms the entire experience
because there's a lot you have to come
to the pesach table and you have to come
you have to experience simcha people
forget or they neglect that there is
and we should not be doing spring
cleaning this is the essence here now we
press play on what we talk about each
and every year
what is this
what we talk about each and every year
spring cleaning versus pesach cleaning
every year i hear people complain the
torah the rabbis
it robs me of my happiness the misery
the work the effort i'm a smart it's
nice to talk about freedom rabbi but
that you had to be prepared for based
off
and they don't sound like that but they
do sound like that
but that's not the halacha and that's
not the torah doing that to you so what
we're going to go through today is what
the demands and anything that you're
doing above and beyond it you're welcome
to but don't blame the torah and don't
blame the rabbis don't blame hashem and
don't bring don't blame anyone in your
home or your family you can come to the
table well rested and happy and prepared
and spiritually prepared
having learned and listened and attended
shiurim and read through how god does so
the key thing that we're going to focus
on
is the difference in distinction between
peso cleaning
and
spring cleaning and spring cleaning
if you are on a ladder
if you are on your hands and knees if
you're holding a toothpick or a
toothbrush you are doing spring cleaning
not pesach cleaning
if you're following the halacha you
never need to be on a ladder you never
need to be on your hands and knees you
never need to be moving a major
appliance out of its spot
if you're following the halacha
and therefore i contend that you can
clean your entire house in a matter of a
few hours
a matter of a few hours
if you want to do spring cleaning and
empty every drawer in every closet
and every bookshelf
then do it
in november
do it in august
do it when you have time during the
three weeks do it during sphere do
spring cleaning whenever you want don't
blame the torah and don't blame halakha
follow the halacha pesach
take my life into my own hands is not a
big deal
cooking is a big deal it's many meals
and many guests
kitchen cafe can be a big deal but
cleaning the rest of your home doesn't
have to be and shouldn't be we have a
torah prohibition of owning
we in fact have many prohibitions it's
an unusual halacha we go through this
every year there are three positive
commandments
or we have to get
commandment to tell the story of the
exodus of leaving egypt three positive
commandments five negative ones what are
the five negative ones
you can't eat a mixture with comments
and then we have unusually by europe
you cannot see
your own you cannot find muhammad you
own this doesn't mean that you can't see
muhammad in general you'll want to walk
through the supermarket and see the
shelves that have hammers if you don't
own it but you can't see how much you
own you can't find
it's unique there are five
characteristics of chemists that make it
not only unusual make it unique number
one we have a special prohibition not
only against comets but against mixtures
containing comets
normally there's one prohibition and if
something in ingredients is in a mixture
such that it is um
identifiable it's a problem but here the
torah gives us a specific prohibition
against even a mixture of muhammad
number two we have two prohibitions
against not only eating comments you're
not even allowed to possess
is our arch enemy for one week muhammad
is
the absolute arch rival our adversary
and you're not only not allowed to
consume it or eat it you're not even
allowed to possess it that's by your
abba matzah you got to get rid of it
number three we have a positive
commandments to dispose of comets not
only do you have to eat it you have to
dispose of it in fact according to some
if you've cleaned your house so well
there's no comments anywhere to be found
how do you fulfill the mitzvah of your
comments
how do you burn comments on our pesach
how do you fulfill the mitzvah of
tashpisu
there is a mitzvah not only to have the
result of a home free of muhammads but
to actively destroy humans how do you
fulfill it review the big discussion do
you burn it can you throw it into the
wind can you flush it down the toilet
how do you fulfill the mitzvah of
we have a separate prohibition of
burning comments number four
you're not only not allowed to possess
you're only not allowed to eat it you're
not allowed to benefit from it
so there's a question can you own stock
in a company that owns
can you feed humans to your dog can you
gift comments to a non-jew who has no
prohibition of hamas
these are all questions because you're
not leaving a lot of benefit it's number
five
and this is the one that's going to be
the sticking point for us
is also
prohibited even in the smallest most
muhammad negligible
not prohibited in a kazaas or kabeta in
oliver and egg
is not prohibited of some large amount
hamas is prohibited in any amount at all
bimashu even a tiny small amount what
constitutes clements
what is the definition of this search
and destroy mission we're about to enter
together we're going to go around home
we're going to take a tour of a home and
talk about what we have to do well what
are we looking for what is this arch
rival what is this enemy what is this
great adversary known as hummus
says comets comes from the five types of
grains that we passed
namely
wheat spelled barley oats or rye any
mixture made from the five flower of the
five types of grain with water that sat
for 18 minutes or more is comments if it
sat for 18 minutes or more that is kham
it's the five grains what about kit neos
kidney is not
what is kidney is a big discussion
ashkenazim adopted upon ourselves in the
middle ages
that for one of two reasons its debate
either because legumes beans legumes
lentils they used to be sold in bags
and sacks that were packed and in order
to bulk them up and to weigh them down
flour was added or grain was added it
got mixed in so ashkenazi the middle
ages said
if we allow you to cook or bake using
them there's a good chance you're going
to consume actual comments nobody has
the ability to filter through these
legumes and these these kidneys and
eliminate the real humids the grain
you're going to come to it
so it's a stringency you're not actively
eating comments but you might come to
comments so they said no kidney us
number one number two possible
prohibition is anything that can be
manipulated
and turned into something that looks
like comets is prohibited these legumes
you can grind and turn into flour and
from that flour you could make things
that look like bread and if we allow you
to consume those you might come to
actually eat bread
today you go to the supermarket and you
have kosher pasta bagels kosher pesach
rolls kosher
if the rabbis were alive today they
would have said that's probably that
certainly would be included in kitten
yes according to that second reason
fired and the contemporaneous fired him
did not accept the prohibition of
kittenius ashkenazim did accept his
prohibition of kidneys one thing we all
know all agree on is that kidney oils
absolutely is not comets it is a
stringency that we follow which means
that if a person is sick they get a
kidney
a child can eat kidney us if kittenius
makes contact with your
utensils they're still kosher they
should just be clean they don't need to
be cashed you could eat in the home of
asparty if you're invited for a meal and
pesach they should tell you what's
kitteny else for you to avoid don't eat
it but you could eat off the rest of
their dishes because kidneys is not
we just treat it with this stringency
kidneys is nullified even though it's
also common it's prohibited even in the
most smallest negligible amount kit neos
because it's technically not
is we apply bitto it does get it does
get nullified it does get nullified so
we have to get rid of the hummus in our
homes not the kidneys in our homes
you're allowed to own it kidney is not
prohibited to own it's not prohibited to
benefit from so if you're feeding your
pet kittenios that might be your best
option it's permissible if you're
feeding your child because all they'll
eat so many baby formulas have kidney os
in them and that's permissible for a
child or for an ill person that is
permissible okay so that's the
difference between what is clements and
what is kidney we are looking for
chametz in our home hamitz results
instantly when the grains are exposed to
hot and
salted water or to water so we have to
be very careful
prohibited with anything why is it
not important right now it's fascinating
but we're not going to get into so how
do we get rid of comments we employ
three separate parallel methods number
one the gemara seems to say the
beginning of sakham that bittle would be
enough
let you in a little secret technically
speaking from a biblical standpoint you
just stand in the middle of your home
you fold your arms and you say i hereby
relinquish any ownership of any comments
you're done preparing for pesach
strictly speaking biblically speaking
you're done bittel i hereby disown i
disassociate comments it's not a problem
in you it's a problem in me but we're
over we're done i have no relationship
with you i have no ownership over you we
are done bitterly strictly speaking
bitter hummus is good done
i
what about baara
you're going to see the comments in your
home you're not violating by era
says
you only violate by iran when it's your
own comments you're seeing but that's
not your comments anymore you've
relinquished ownership however we employ
a second method
called vidiq
we say that's not good enough and why is
that not good enough
what are we worried about
that you really you can't break up that
relationship with comets is so strong
that you know what's going to happen
that intimate donut that's in the
cabinet that last one you were holding
on to with the crumbs oliver shalom mr
intimate
mr anthem and allah so the best one we
had a big discussion which is the best
entrance but i still maintain it's the
one with the crumble on top that even
when you finish the donut
stuff some extra in the box a little
bonus for you
not the chocolate ones the vanilla ones
or whatever the other ones are anyway
you see that emotional relationship with
the donut so what's going to happen you
did bittel you declared on air of pesach
i don't own it i don't relate to you
you're not mine but then you get really
hungry and you really crave the donut
and you discover and you find it there
you may come to eat it so the rabbi said
even though bittel technically can work
don't rely on it because imagine if you
can have comments all over your home
comments you claim to not own anymore
because you've declared it ownerless but
then you get hungry for some you crave
some you're going to come to eat so we
employ a second method and the second
method is called badikas search and
destroy we go and we look all over our
home to find the comments where it lives
where it resides and we eliminate we
destroy we purge it from our homes so
why do we still do bitter if badika is
enough why are we still doing bitter
we have to cover our bases in case what
what if we didn't find the piece of
comments so what if there's still
comments in our possession in our home
that we didn't find now we're going to
violate by your buds on pesach so we
cover ourselves by doing bittle so we
say hashem i'm looking all over my house
without comments i want to get rid of it
that ate sahara that ego that arrogance
that inflated i'm getting inflation i'm
getting rid of inflation i'm getting rid
of it all over my home but you know what
if i didn't find something i also
declared ownerless so we employed both
and then a third method the third method
which we don't have time for but we've
spoken about in the past past isn't it a
harama a legal loophole but the third
method is
what happens to my scotch and whiskey
collection
very valuable very expensive
so i'm not ready to get rid of it
and i'm not really ready to declare it
ownerless because i want to have it back
after pesach so we came up with this
legal loophole called selling
how that works again also for another
time so that is the principle the
three-pronged attack that we are going
to employ and engage in order to get rid
of the comments in our lives now what do
we have to look for where do we have to
look for it this is what's critically
important and this is what
differentiates pesach cleaning from
spring cleaning pesach has gotten away
from us and what was purely voluntary
what was a humra what were stringencies
that people volunteered and they're
entitled to
if you want to
drive yourself crazy wipe down every
surface use a toothbrush and a toothpick
clean out ceiling fans on a ladder and
you were gonna be happy and skip to the
seder and not blame anyone then do it no
one's stopping you
it's beautiful merit you're gonna go
above and beyond the scrubbing and
cleaning
more power to you
but if you wanna know what halacha
demands versus what you are doing that's
extra
here we go here we go definitions of
muhammad
of sikh and of possession are all very
clear
areas and places where comets never
brought do not need to be cleaned or
checked
everything i'm telling you right now is
not from goldberg 2022 apologizing
defensive to the people who are bitter
about cleaning for pesach everything i'm
telling you
you have to search all the places that
you are worried that enters
the rooms of the home have to require a
medica that's what you have to check
any place that is entered so number one
if you know that you have a place that
did not enter do you need to check it
no
when is the last time you sat on your
ceiling fan and had a sandwich
when is the last time you sat on a
windowsill and had a sandwich
when is the last time you moved your
oven out from its wall and sat in the
space that it once sat and had a
sandwich
any area where hummus is not brought you
do not need to check any area number two
principle number two any area number two
that will not be accessed over pesach
need not be cleaned
so
your toaster oven your sandwich maker
your blender your food processor
you're not going to use them over pesach
so you know how you prepare them for
pesach
every year amigos my minute of
ranking on my mother my childhood
memories of watching my mother with her
toothpick and toothbrush and before she
put the appliances away driving herself
and everyone else crazy she's a holy
woman doing holy work i'm saying this
lash
in her praise but
with those appliances
sitting for hours cleaning out and
searching and finding and disassembling
and assembling like the mishkan every
little piece of hummus
did she have to do that
no why
putting it away so you know what the
preparation is of all those appliances
my favorite part of getting ready for
pesach because i do the kitchen i help
out in the kitchen i take the toaster
and i take the blender and i take the
food processor i take everything and i
put it in a cabinet you know how i get
them all ready for pace off
with one little piece of tape
you put them in a cabinet you put them
in a closet you put them in a box and
you put a little piece of tape over it
and they are now ready for pesach not
from goldberg this is the
anything that will not be accessed over
pesach need not be cleaned and need not
be prepared need not be checked
put it away seal it
and pledge that you're not going to
access it that's true for any rumor
space in your home
if you have a room which is dirty but
you don't plan on going in there over
pesach a piece of tape over the door if
you have a garage if you have a
refrigerator or a backup freezer that
you're not going to access or use a
piece of tape
the parts of the kitchen that are not
going to be used on pesach you know how
you prepare them for pesach piece of
tape
that's it
so in other words unlike the way many of
us were raised or thought was
that you have to empty and wipe down
every shelf and every armoire and every
cabinet and every dresser and every
closet all you need to do is walk around
with the tape tape is your best friend
on air of pesach
tape is absolutely your best friend in
the entire world any area that you're
not accessing
you need to simply tape up and it is
prepared and ready for p i is that a
cooler a leniency some newfangled idea
for the people who don't really want to
be religious that is the halacha that is
the halacha now if you want to empty out
and wipe everything down
spring cleaning that gives you some joy
that makes you feel satisfies your ocd
tendency then feel free just don't blame
the rabbis
or torah don't become a shemata and
don't be fabishna and don't become the
russia at the seder mob
all in the name of doing that spring
cleaning so now let's take a tour of our
house
any cabinet closet room that will not be
entered can simply be closed a piece of
tape and the kitchen cabinet drawer
cover will not be used need not be
cleaned any appliance food processor
sandwich maker mixer bread machine need
not be cleaned just needs to be put away
just needs to be put away
so
let's start with the bedrooms
bedrooms these comets brought into that
bedroom in many cases yes people like to
snack late at night people like to bring
food into their room
in many cases yes and it needs to be
cleaned and you need to look and check
and make sure there aren't crumbs even
negligible small amounts hummus is also
even a nothing the mission brewer goes
out of his way to say that if you have
little children at home all bets are off
if you have young children at home then
all bets are off where's this quote from
mishnuburu
because when you have young children
there is no place that hummus doesn't
enter
hamas is brought everywhere at all times
however if you don't have young children
at home then you know which areas in
your home it's entered in which they
didn't you have rooms and spaces where
you are confident
never went
so you do not need to drive yourself
crazy so when when we look through what
i do summits at night and when yahweh
really turned tremendous credit prepares
and cleans the house for pesach she goes
into each room and she opens the drawers
she moves the clothing a little bit
aside and confirms that there's no
sandwich
confirms that there's no pretzel
confirms that there's no cookie or piece
of cake or leftover hamantaschen does
she take all the clothing out of every
drawer wipe it all down no
i don't think she does she doesn't need
to
she does she doesn't need to and you
don't need to
in the closet do you have to go no
you have to generally look over each
area areas that you know comets never
went and give a survey of that area to
confirm that hamas is not present there
and it is now prepared for pesa
you have a bookshelf with books
bookcases with books i have a large
library to home
i am not in the business of opening book
halo vi i open those farm all the time
the overwhelming majority is farm
and the have deal books and bookcases in
our homes
they read once in a lifetime let alone
they're not opened every year
we don't generally hide pretzels
sandwiches and cookies
in the books
so if you learned a particular farm you
know as farm that came to your shabba's
table and you generally love to learn
your parties foreign
while eating the khala or the dessert or
nibbling and finishing up those
delicious blondies so then you need to
check those few books that you do that
with but the books that you know weren't
open the entire year the bookcases that
you know were not accessed the entire
year
you don't have to take out all the books
and wipe down all the bookshelves and
rifle through all the books
so we've just eliminated enormously
enormously we have just narrowed down
the cleaning process from a survey of
the areas where comets never entered not
needing to take out ceiling fans i
remember climbing ladders and ceiling
fans and wiping down ceiling blades
i remember moving appliances out from
the wall why don't you need to do that
crawl spaces
crawl spaces if you're climbing on a
ladder to clean a ceiling fan or taking
a toothpick your toaster food processor
if you're scrubbing grout with a
toothbrush if you're emptying wiping
dresses closets linen pantries crawl
spaces if you're shaking out books that
haven't been opened in years you are
doing spring cleaning you are not
preparing for pesach stop blaming the
rabbis
by the way any food that's not
categorized as edible meaning a dog
would not eat it is not called hummus
so the fact that behind your oven or
behind your refrigerator in some space
there might be some
little crumb that made its way if your
dog would look at you and go i'm not
eating that then that's not called
hummus hummus is only that which is
edible and edible to a dog you don't
have to check for crumbs that are less
than a gazias if they're dirty or soiled
and wouldn't be edible to a human mishna
bureau
submission number explicit mission guru
you do not need to check for crumbs that
are less than a kazias less than an
olive that are dirty and soiled and
would not be edible to a human so
what is halakha demand what are we
looking for what is this mission and why
do i contend it takes only a few hours
to prepare your whole house no matter
how big it is we're going room to room
confirming there's no comments larger
than 30 grams and edible that's what
we're looking for that there's no hummus
larger than 30 grams and still edible
and that can be accomplished in a few
hours and you don't need to break your
back you don't need to hurt your knees
you don't need to climb and you don't
need to bend and you don't need any
small sharp instruments
so we need to all be very careful you
know why because the does say this
does say
that
we need to come to the seder table and
enjoy
writes
you have to be happy and joyful and
pleasant to be around
you have to have a good and positive
energy
this is a positive biblical commandment
you're going to ache and practice and
moan and complain and be miserable
you're going to forfeit and violate a
positive biblical commandment of islam
and says
this is not a male a man
this is true for women as well everyone
needs to come happy and joyful and
positive and so on and so forth so to
clean our rooms to get them ready that
is what we need to do that is what we
need to do that is what we're looking
for that is we have to go around so
before we get to the kitchen any
questions
any questions before we get to the
kitchen let me just apply this in terms
of some of these specific spaces
as we said the major appliances don't
clean them put them away major cabinets
or areas with a lot of helmets don't
clean them put a piece of tape over them
same is true in a toy room we have a
playroom a lot of people have young
children at home have a playroom
and you can have comments that enters
playroom because again with kids when
they bring food into that playroom it
can get into all kinds of things plato
is clements itself so the same thing
applies in the playroom
leave out a few toys for your children
or grandchildren to play with that are
cleaned or that you clean and everything
else shove in a box put a piece of tape
over it and your playroom is ready for
pesach
don't drive yourself crazy don't be ocd
do not create mental health challenges
in the name of religion
do not
put away tape up and you are ready to go
floors and and carpets vacuum i hope
people vacuum their carpets regularly so
just your rotation a vacuum in your
carpet once a week twice a week however
often you but just vacuum your carpet
before pesach and don't bring comets in
there after it was vacuumed sweep the
floor and don't bring comments after it
was swept
dressers do you normally have a sandwich
behind the dresser in your bedroom
it's not an area the comments has
brought then an area of the comments
goes so there's no reason you need to be
moving it moreover unless you intend on
moving the dresser to have a slice of
matzo pizza in there on halamoid then
you don't need to you're not going to be
accessing it on yantef so you do not
need to be moving
appliances or moving furniture or
climbing a ladder or going down on your
knees or going down on your knees we'll
get to the kitchen in a moment but books
we spoke about toys we spoke about couch
now you should
between the cushions of the couch there
is hummus it should be cleaned anyway
that's not spring cleaning that's
mentioned kite clean whatever's there
anyway and again that shouldn't take too
long move the cushions and vacuum vacuum
the floor sweep the floor clean the
cushions
open each drawer dresser and look
through it and make sure confirm there's
no comments tell you what else you're
allowed to do you can engage your family
to participate in getting ready you ask
each child you're in charge of your
bedroom i want you to fulfill this
mitzvah give them a little spiritual pep
talk comments represents we're going to
search for it what do you need to work
on this year how do we want to be better
and now go look through your things
you're not going to trust trust and
verify as they say so with your children
you're going to engage them but trust
and verify so we're going to have a
mitzvah called badika's comments i do
that when i search our entire house i
open every drawer but still doesn't take
me that long how long does it take to
open a drawer and look yes there's no
sandwich yes there's no pretzel yes
there's no blondie yes there's no cookie
how long does it take
open each drawer look through a little
bit
glance look through the items sitting on
top of the dresser or on the nightstand
and make sure there's bahamas there
that's it that's all one needs to do so
that is preparing the house
and now we go on tour of the kitchen
questions about the house
right now
okay hold on one second crumbs that are
inedible even by a dog are not hammets
even if they're bigger than a kazaas so
if they're inedible to a dog
they're not even if they're bigger than
a gaza is shocking or tough then base if
bays
and if they're less than a kazias and
dirty and soiled and inedible to a human
then they're not humans so the
difference between the edible to a dog
and edible to a human is whether they're
smaller or bigger than a cause
yes
windex
is it edible
so if it's inedible it's not hammers
even if it has an ingredient correct
if it's inedible and it cannot be
converted into something edible then
it's not comments
yes
we'll get there we'll get there
hold on
anything about the house okay let's rush
right to the kitchen you've all been
here with me before so let's move right
away let's look at the kitchen
where should we start in the kitchen so
first of all again the best part of the
kitchen the most fun in the kitchen is
your piece of tape you roll the tape
first thing to do is walk around and say
what am i not allocating for pesach so
we have a cabinet or two that we're
going to put our peso things in that
needs to be wiped down and that you
should put a piece of
paper or towel or something on it but if
you're not going to access it for pesach
then put a piece of tape tape is the
greatest friend you ever had major
appliances go in box tape them up
cabinets taped up
so your whole kitchen right away now
eighty percent of your kitchen's ready
for pay stuff
just because you had a roll tape eighty
80 of your kitchen is ready for pesach
what about the cabinets you're going to
use empty them out wipe them down put
some paper towel good that's the
cabinets sinks
it depends what your sink is made out of
sinks can be captured let's give a quick
primer on cash
we believe tom kiker not only do we have
extant physical present pieces of food
which are prohibited so hammets we said
is also
but we believe no same time there's a
concept that food can impart taste to
utensils you can have a sparkling clean
utensil
but if something it was cooked in it an
imparted taste into it it still has the
status of that food even if the food is
not traceably there even if the food is
not there sparkling clean pot but the
cot pot was used to clean meat to cook
meat you can't use the pot to now cook
dairy why because tom kicker it's no
saint tom it parts tom kicker tom
taste is like the icker is like the very
thing that it was
however we also have another principle
24 hours after a taste was imparted into
a utensil it's considered stale it's no
longer there
taste cannot be
potent taste does not last 24 hours
after 24 hours it's no sentamlev gum now
it's no longer a positive pleasant taste
it's no saint tom lifgam which means
strictly speaking from a torah
perspective what do you have to do to
make your non-kosher pot kosher
wait 24 hours that's it by waiting
as long as the sparkling clean whatever
taste had been imparted to it is gone
what do you have to do to make your meat
pot dairy or pyruv
wait 24 hours strictly speaking but we
don't rely on that
it's called the benio or eno banyama
within 24 hours of the beniomo more than
24 hours of innova
why don't we rely on that we don't rely
on that for very good reason
most people have more than one pot
our kitchen is filled with utensils and
pots and cutlery
so imagine if you had a different clock
and stopwatch for every one of them
because there's a lot of steak if it was
really 23 hours and 58 minutes
and you thought you could now cook dairy
in your meat pot you're going to have
basil
you're going to have comets
so because we can't really keep track of
those 24 hours we don't rely on that
biblical pro that biblical definition
of 24 hours aino banyamo so what we do
in addition is we caution
however
part of our strategy of capturing is
waiting 24 hours because we also can
reverse the status just by waiting and
then on top of that we cash her
so
in cash ring we have different systems
that we use
depending on how the utensil absorbed
the taste
proportional to how it absorbed the
taste is the method that we use to purge
it of the taste
so
if it absorbs the taste with liquid we
use liquid to get rid of it so for
example if you cook the corned beef in a
pot boiling in water so how did the
paprika meet through the medium of water
how will you get the meat taste out of
the pot
hagala the medium of water you'll put it
in boiling water
however in oven if you used fire or heat
to impart taste
barbecue then you need fire or heat in
order to get the taste out
so no santa so quebolo
the way that it absorbed is the way it's
purged how does the walls of your
microwave absorb taste
not through liquid
nor through heat but how
steam
the microwave works somehow i explain it
to you another time except i can't even
do that because i don't understand it
but somehow the microwave works
not with heat and there's no liquid but
steam
so how do you get the flavor the taste
out of the walls of the microwave steam
cabolo cockpolto however absorbed it
tasted so that is the principle those
are the principles of kashring that's
how we kosher there's one last thing we
have a rule in koshering we have a rule
in kashrus
called bittel
bittle means that most foods
at a ratio of 60 to 1 are nullified
they're no longer discernible they're no
longer contributing so we treat them
like but they're not there how do we
come to 60 to 1 and that doesn't apply
to everything there are different ratios
for different foods but when it comes to
non-kosher 60 to 1 is the ratio so if
you put something something a drop of
milk fell into your challenge and it was
a ratio of 60 to 1 you're good to go by
the way you're good to go not only that
you can eat that challenge you're good
to go that you should eat that challenge
the
says what if a person says you know i'm
so mahmir i'm such a holy roller i don't
want to eat the challenge that a drop of
milk fell into even if there was a
thousand to one i'll give it to my
non-jewish housekeeper
are you more righteous because you do
that
kiss kaichuba says you're a cofer
cofer you're a heretic a heretic it's an
incredibly strong language it's episode
juba writes you know why who said you
can't have milk and meat
god
he's the same god that said if it was 60
to 1 you're okay you're good to go
so guess what now you're trying to be
more religious than god
if you're trying to be more religious
than god you're not serving god you're
worshiping yourself you're a heretic
you're a heretic don't be more righteous
than god god said it's prohibited and
god says it's the way is permissible
don't be holier or more righteous thank
god okay so those are principles that
are critically important now we can take
a tour of our kitchen
how did the how does your sink absorb
comet's taste
through what method
liquid
what happened you had dishes in your
sink and you ran the hot water over them
when you're washing the sink
that's how your sink absorbed taste how
are you going to get it out
liquid how do you kosher your sink by
pouring pouring boiling water over the
surface of your sink now that assumes
the surface of your sink is a casual
surface
not every material that absorbs can
purge
some materials don't absorb
some absorbent can be purged some absorb
but can't be perched
not all materials are created equal
so metal for example absorbs and can be
purged earthenware absorbs but can't be
perched
glass
doesn't absorb or purge that's what we
pass again the whole year you could use
the same glass from eating dairy if you
have a pyrex dish you can cook
you can cook a meat casserole and clean
it and then cook a
cheese casserole
glass does not absorb or purge however
ashkenazim are strict for pesach sparred
them or not svaram will use the same
glass for meat for hummus and fur and
for pesach
so depending on the material metal glass
earthenware they're each different
so if your sink is made from metal a
stainless steel sink
that absorbs and purges you could
caution it how do you casher it clean it
wait 24 hours
and then pour boiling water over the
surface of it in order to kasher the
water has to be boiling shaken ark uses
the lotion of mala a babos
that's an adamatopia alamata p is a word
that sounds like what it is
a babuo sounds like bubbling about us
bubbling the water is not just hot when
is the water ready to kosher with not
just when it puts off steam it has to be
bubbling blah blah blah blah blah blah
blah blah blah blah
blah
so when it's that hot you take the pot
now people make a mistake whether it's
the counter or the sink they think you
can splash the water and you start it
from here problem is when you do that
when the water first hits the surface it
hits it's hot what happens by the time
it gets to the end of the sink or
counter it's cold water you're not
cashering you have to walk with it and
you have to caution it
over the entire surface you have to be
spilling it over the whole surface and
not just splashing or running with it
it's not tisha cabana tahara it's rather
your cash ring if you understand what
i'm saying don't worry you're walking
with the pot and you have to cash it
over the entire surface so depending on
what type of sink you have will
determine if it's a
an earthenware sink
well they call that porcelain sink you
cannot caster it if it's metal stainless
steel you can depending on the material
i highly recommend
we today are very blessed making pesach
today
the age of technology hashem has helped
us incredibly your phone
and your apps are your best friend right
after tape your roll of tape is your
best friend and your second best friend
is your phone with its apps if you do
not have the crc app and the starkey app
and the ou app those three apps
app application download them on your
phone or if you have the internet go to
the website or if you have a friend or
the library print them out
because we are blessed to live in a time
where you have incredible incredible
resources if you have the book they're
great to read i tried to memorize it
over shabbos if you have the app you're
better because you can search it as a
search function whatever you're looking
for but
the incredible leaders we owe a
tremendous debt of gratitude to the crc
i say this every year star kou are
invaluable they're wonderful i find the
crc's most user-friendly
i find it's the most moderate opinion
and i
highly highly endorse it crcosher.org
or the crc app just hit the pesach 2022
and you've got everything shopping
guides endless cash ring guides and
lists ingredient guides endless you've
got everything i'm not just saying that
so you don't call me although that's
definitely a huge benefit of it but you
can look up and for yourself find almost
everything you need so as we're going to
go through the kitchen you want to know
is my sink crusherable or not say you
know i had an incredible kitchen
designer who came up with some material
no one ever heard of we imported it from
italy crc heard of it look at their list
of sinks and they'll tell you whether
you can cash yours or not materials
granite stone
wood formica
marble this incredible number of counter
tops today crc's got a list of every one
of them and a beautiful spreadsheet can
you cash it or not so your sink you're
going to clean it well leave it 24 hours
how do you define his leave in 24 hours
means that no hot liquid hit it
what's going to happen your
husband or child is going to go into
that sink and they're going to put
something down not realizing you've
started the 24 hour countdown clock and
they're going to pour something cold
down the sink or put their used cereal
bowl in the sink and does that restart
the clock i get this question every year
multiple times a year and it's always
about a more on husband that's why i
feel comfortable saying it
the answer is it depends if they put
something hot down
or porcelain hot in it restarts the
clock
however if it was cold you can wipe it
down and the clock continues and goes
the minute in our home is who did i tell
you is your best friend
tape a big x goes over the sink when the
clock begins you have to be a huge super
to not see the big x over the
whole sink when the countdown begins the
clock starts do not put anything in that
sink for the 24 hours so clean it well
wait 24 hours
yeah you could do that too put something
over it you clean it well wait 24 hours
and
then
cash for the sink by pouring boiling
water in the sink that is the sink
don't forget to also cash or the knobs
of the sink they need to be cleaned very
well
don't forget to casher the spout of the
sink and then many things today have the
pull down hose to reach hard to reach
places first of all you have to turn it
over to kasher the spout
some of the guides say that if you have
a filter on the end you should replace
it for pesach if it can unscrew you can
pour it put it in a pot of boiling water
and cashew for pesach if it's a filter
that i don't know how humid is getting
through there or why that's such a
concern if you have the hose be very
careful it has the hose by definition is
made up of small areas make sure they're
cleaned well
and pour the boiling water over wee
paskin it's a big debate can you cash in
rubber or plastic you can cash your
metal
you cannot crush a ceramic can you
caution plastic is a big debate we pass
in the ou the crc pascan you can cash or
plastic hard plastic hard plastic can be
captured so the hose of the sink some
say better not to pull it down and use
it to hold pesach or you can pull it
down and you can cash for that pour the
boiling water over the surface of the
sink over the knobs over the spout over
the rubber hose that is coming out of
the sink as as well okay any questions
about the sink yes
oh good
good some have a special cashewing pot
there's a minute you saw some of the
special cashewing pot however
however the halacha is and many rely on
any pot that hasn't been used in 24
hours
pot a milk pot of fleshy pot any pot
that hasn't been used in 24 hours can
can be used for cashew okay sinks yes
you should clean the crevices of the
sink before you casher correct because
otherwise when you pour that boiling
water you're just going to continue to
impart the taste of the
chamois
here's another rule though i don't know
how it would work in your sink but any
area which is hard to reach or you're
struggling with cleaning this will be
very relevant on the accordion plastic
around your refrigerator door
is spray a caustic spray because
remember what we said
if something's inedible even to a dog
it's not comets so if you have a spray
of something caustic something which
will make it inedible something poised
not poisonous i'm not trying to kill
anyone in your kitchen but something
caustic and inedible you can make it
you could take away its identity as
humans
identity crisis so you could take away
its identity as christ as hamitz and
then so so in a hard-to-reach place i
don't know if you should do that in your
sink
but
you do need to clean it well before
pouring the boiling water let's go right
over the not over the sink
what's over the sink nothing let's go to
countertops the natural next place to go
clean the countertops well again 24
hours nothing hot can be put on a
countertop for 24 hours pour boiling
water along the surface of the
countertop you can't again run and
splash it you have to walk with it and
and
hit the surface as best as possible each
of the surface areas of the countertop
with the hot water as you go what
counter tops can be captured for mica we
pass skin can be captured now a lot of
formica has a lot of scratch and
crevices maybe then it's best to cover
it because it's hard to get in there but
if the formica is fairly smooth it can
be cautious clean well wait 24 hours
pour boiling water granite can be
captured even wood can be captured but
it's complicated often has scratches and
cuts in it so it's difficult
if you're either concerned that you're
not going to kosher well one of the
principles in the locals of kasharing is
that if it's delicate and you feel
you're not going to kosher it well then
it's not considered casher so if you
know yourself and you're going to be so
delicate when we redid our kitchen
several years ago because we had a
different pipe break when we did our
kitchen several years ago and the next
year pesach i was all prepared to cash
in the kitchen as usual my wife told me
not over her dead body
why because when you splash that water
everywhere it doesn't just hit the
granite countertop it runs down into the
cabinets and now it can warp the cabinet
doors and the cabinets and everything
else so that was the last year we cashed
our countertops with boiling water but
we covered the countertops and i want to
tell you right now this is just a
personal editorial comment not a halal
comment when i was growing up we had a
very we had a white formica kitchen
and they we had specially made for
pesach um
hard
boards that were made to fit the
countertops and they were covered with
like a blue like a royal blue like
trayless blue um
paper that what's it called
contact paper on them and you know
someone's job we cleaned the kitchen
when we were ready to convert the
kitchen to transfer the kitchen we
carried those up from the basement we
don't have basements here and the kids
you know we loved it it's like a puzzle
which piece fit in which place and it
was great but you know what the result
was for the week of pesach the kitchen
looked different when you looked at the
kitchen that week you knew it was a
pesach kitchen and moze paisa when we
reversed it and you cleaned and you put
everything away and you wiped it down
and who is going to take it off and put
it back downstairs in the basement all
of a sudden the kitchen looked like the
rest of the year kitchen again and we
now have that in our kitchen again
there's a side benefit it's just an
editorial comment this is not halacha
but i think it's a beautiful benefit
that your kitchen looks different your
home feels different so we did the same
thing we made
semi-permanent and it's a puzzle and you
fit it on top and you store it during
the year and you there's no hot water no
burning yourself no warped kitchen
cabinets no worries that i really hit
the surface but you've got to cash out
the countertops and the backsplash
because people put pots down all the
time that are hot that hit a backsplash
so you've gotta not only cash or whether
it's with boiling water or with covering
you have to cover or casher both the
countertop and the backsplash if you
want to know about your particular
countertop whatever material it's made
out of quartz granite stone doesn't
crc's got it all look in there check it
that is the method of caution we've done
sinks we've done counter tops what's
next let's go to the
microwave how they cache our microwave
we already said now it's very important
to know that a microwave has glass into
the glass tray ashkenazim cannot cash
your glass we follow you don't cross
your glass so the first thing you do is
take the tray out
how do you caution that tray by putting
it in a box with a piece of tape over it
it's out you can't cash through the tray
take the glass tray out how do you cache
the rest of the microwave it's got to be
cleaned well usually there's a little
fan a little grid over in a microwave
particularly that area clean well if
you're concerned did you really clean it
well or not spray something in it clean
it well
leave it 24 hours
again protect yourself from the morons
in your family a little piece of tape
over it will help them remember not to
use it for the 24 hours and then
microwave safe styrofoam bowl or cup
filled with water in the chamber of the
microwave
put the microwave on long enough to
produce and fill the chamber with steam
10 minutes 12 minutes in the microwave
then importantly fill it up again move
it to another spot and do it again why
because whatever spot the microwave safe
place was sitting on is not casher so
you've got to do it twice in order to
hit the second place that's a casual
micro clean wall wait 24 hours and heat
up water in a microwave safe utensil
until the chamber fills with steam then
move it and do it again so that you
casher the spot where that utensil was
as well and your microwave is now kosher
what if it's a convection microwave
then you have to kosher it the same way
you do in oven so we'll move to the oven
anything else about the microwave no
good yes
no
no it's not cautioned well enough
plastic wrap the plate's got to come out
plate's got to come out how do you
caution the oven
we will talk about in a moment yes
it's a big discussion
uh the oven how do you cash in an oven
if you have a self-clean oven then you
turn on a self-clean cycle
self-clean hits a temperature which will
obliterate anything its path why do we
distinguish between self-clean and
non-self-clean
because we have two types of cash ring
with fire we said cabolo polto you purge
taste the same way it absorbed taste
so
there are two ways that you kasher what
we call libon kal and libun hammer libon
gomur libenkal is a light fire
versus a strict obliterating fire so
when you put your oven on its highest
setting that's a liben cow when you run
the self-clean cycle that's liben gummer
when you here's one difference normally
with koshering we wait 24 hours to add
that extra layer of protection because
after 24 hours everything is kosher
anyway ain't nobody no sentiment but if
you're using liben gum or you do not
need to wait 24 hours liben gomer is so
strong it obliterates anything in its
path you do not need to use liben gummer
so if you run a self-clean cycle you do
not need to wait 24 hours and you don't
need to clean the oven well because by
running the self-clean cycle and if you
don't believe me
put a wooden spoon in the oven and run a
soft clean cycle and you will find a
pile of ash on the bottom of your oven
that wooden spoon will not survive a
soft clean cycle it obliterates anything
in its path
so a self-clean oven cycle you do not
need to wait 24 hours you can also if
you want to by the way kosher the grates
of your
stovetop you can put them in the oven
when you run the soft clean cycle and
cash the grates that way
the grates if you have a gas oven not a
uh glass top stove
um by putting them in the oven itself
what if you have don't have a self-clean
oven or you're afraid to run some people
don't want to run the soft clean oven
they don't want to run it till the end
because it can burn down your heart it's
so hot it's unbelievable the whole
kitchen is hot so then you clean the
oven well
wait 24 hours and put it on the highest
setting for an hour
clean it well wait 24 hours and put it
on the high setting for an hour that is
the oven that's the microwave and that
is the oven those are the countertops
and those are the sinks
we move over to the stove top
yes
right so
even a three hour would be enough if it
hits that highest setting and stays on
it for a little while it's enough yeah
um
let's talk about the stovetop stovetop
so the old gas stove top that at a pilot
light
you casher by covering all the area
underneath the grates
and you caution the grates by leaving
the
each the stove top on the highest
setting for 20 minutes all the fire is
going to automatic kosher the grate on
top of it you cover everything else and
you're good to go that was the old days
when we lived up north that was the
easiest way to cash her and that is the
proper way to cash for a gas top stove
what about a electric stove with the
electric coils so similarly not glass
top the electric top i don't know if
they make those anymore
you turn each of the coils on until they
turn red glow red they're castered and
you cover the area in between the tin
foil including the knobs or you can
kasher in our home we take the knobs off
and we put them in a pot of boiling
water we caution them we cover the area
behind the knobs but the knobs itself
you can you can casher lastly what about
a glass top stove
glass top stove
glass top stove every year the agencies
come out with different ideas and
suggestions but i'm going to stick with
what we've said all along that i spoke
to my rebellion and this is what we do
turn the burners each on high till they
glow and they're captured don't do all
four at once because it's incredible
heat you can crack your glass top stove
so do two at a time one at a time 10
minutes 12 minutes until they glow and
that area is cautious when the whole
when they're cool don't do it when all
the burners are hot and this is
complicated how to heat the water to do
it but pour water over the surface of
your glasstop stove even though we pass
constringently that glass can't be
cautious even oscar nazim technically
hold the ken so even though we don't
rely on that for pesach here it's an
additional layer and then most
importantly try not to put anything down
on pesach in the area in between the
burners
so the pot can go on the burner the pot
i get asked this every year even if the
circumference of your pot is bigger than
the area of the burner it can go on the
burner
but try not to put down the spoon or the
lid or anything in between the areas of
the burners several people sent me this
year apparently i don't know which
scientists were working on this but they
came up with
like it looks like a towel that you
could put down on a glass top stove and
put a pot on top of that it doesn't it's
not dangerous doesn't it's not flammable
and you can put the pot on top of that
which i guess is an additional layer i
guess it's going to add a humra if you
buy that and it's pasta you still need
to crush the glass top stove but it's an
added layer of putting it on top of that
so that is how you cushion the glass top
stove as well do not cover your glass
top stove you will break it it will
crack
no matter what anyone writes or tells
you don't cover it been there done that
don't do it so leave the burners on high
till they glow and they're kosher
an additional stringency pour boiling
water over the surface of the glass and
not when all the four burners are hot or
you'll crack a glass top stove most
importantly try not to put anything down
in the areas between your burners on
pesach itself
okay
good last
yes that's why all of this is
long before glass top stoves nobody was
talking about there's another major
appliance in your kitchen that has a lot
of glass in it and nobody talked about
how are you allowed to kasha namely
your oven door
so you see that we are relying on
and it is possible and it's a big
discussion why i said leave aside the
lundus in the background of it but
that's how you cache the glass top yeah
you don't have to let it wait for 24
hours stove top you should clean it well
leave it for 24 hours first
yeah stop top you do awesome the only
thing you don't wait 24 hours is
something you're doing liben gomer on
which is the self-clean oven
everything else you need to wait 24
hours
correct
correct but everything else you have to
wait 24 hours no you don't run the self
clean twice
no
no the racks can be captured in the self
clean
and in the oven itself correct some of
the stringers do to cover the racks for
pesach if it wasn't self-clean but
right
right no right because that's steam this
is heat so that's why it's different you
don't need to you don't need to do it
twice yes
until they glow red they say 10-12
minutes till you see them actually
glowing red
so they would singe a fire correct
that's it dishwasher can you cash your
dishwasher maybe
again some have stainless steel
dishwashers we said you could even cash
your plastic hard plastic but a
dishwasher is very difficult and
complicated to casher it's filled with a
filter on the bottom and grates and
crevices and small and cracks and racks
and it's very very hard so some say it
can be i recommend you don't i know
that's not pleasant for pesach but i
think it's very complicated and
difficult to casher for pesach and i
recommend not cashing it if you're
following the opinions that you do so
again clean it well especially on the
bottom the filter and the great well
wait 24 hours and run it on a cycle
carrick can you caution your kerg
machine you're an espresso machine the
answer is yes what you do is clean it
wait 24 hours take out the area that
holds the cup with the pin put it in
boiling water and then run a cup through
the kerrig and a coach lapays a cup
through the kerrig and now your carrog
is kosher for pesach do your cups need
to be kosher for pesach we'll skip right
to ingredients for a moment the answer
is yes i spoke to ray fishbein the head
of the crc last week and he told me some
extra trade i don't even know some
ingredient that is in a lot of these
k-cups so you have to look at i think
the only pesach guide may have a list of
the cups aren't going to say oup
but we know they've investigated which
ones are okay and only use the ones that
they are
confirming are okay when it comes to the
when it comes to the carry
uh what else is in your kitchen that you
might want to cash for a hot water urn
can you cash in your hot water urn do
you need a separate one for pesach so
did comets ever make contact with your
hot water urn
if you never bought if you never
brought bread or comets to the hot water
urn then it's okay then you don't need a
new one
if you did or you washed it with vinegar
some people do or washed it with comet's
things then it's a problem and you
should get a piece of hot water urn your
hot plate your plata if it's glass if
it's a glass warming tray it cannot be
castered if it's that plata you clean it
well wait 24 hours plug it in and leave
it in for an hour and then cover it with
tin foil and you can use the same one
for pesach
yeah underneath that should also be
cleaned very well yeah because there's
steam that goes up there and then comes
back down it doesn't need to be covered
should be cleaned very well it should be
cleaned very well covering it can be
dangerous yeah
yeah the hood yeah you can't cut you
can't cover it
a regular coffee maker meaning like a
glass pot and so on
um
probably can't use
i don't know if it can be cashed
and it would need to be cautious because
not all coffee is automatically kosher
for pesach
and yeah the glass pot is is can't be
cashed unless you're sparedy unless
you're farty a lot of instant coffee on
pesach
um
what else in the kitchen hot plate
and the uh
refrigerator thank you we didn't talk
about the refrigerator the refrigerator
refrigerator should be emptied wiped
down cleaned
there's a minute you straw to
put something down in it be careful it's
perforated or you'll break your
refrigerator
observe the minute by putting down some
paper towels but you don't need to drive
yourself crazy
by you know arts and crafts project of
taping together paper towel to make sure
that every square millimeter is covered
it's a minute to keep covering it but
once it's cleaned it's cleaned freezer
should be defrosted because
if you have bread that got attached to
the frost on the side of the freezer so
the minute it gets to the frosted clean
it well and again the most important
part of the refrigerator the accordion
door rubber door around it clean it well
if it's hard you're driving yourself
crazy spray it with a caustic spray and
you are okay you don't need to clean
under the oven behind the oven behind
the refrigerator
or anything like that
no
not wipe it down just wipe it down yeah
and again anything that you're not using
on pace just tape up 80 90 of your
kitchen you're just going to tape up
you're not even going to clean at all
yeah that should be taped up for pesach
but what about a warming drawer so the
crc are the heroes on this one others
disagree with the crc says you can cash
for a warming drawer with a sterno
clean it leave it 24 hours
heat a sterno in the in the warming
drawer and leave it open a crack you
have to allow air to escape and by doing
that your your warming draw will be
kosher to pesach and you'll be so happy
you did it
that is the warming drawer
juicer
juicer i don't know how do you uh how
does comments ever go in a juicer or do
you must clean it with hummus things
though
does it get cleaned with cold water and
soap
um i don't know
cashewing a juicer let's see is it neo
u's beautiful picture here
sink faucet dishwasher hot water urn
tea kettle somebody asked me about the
kumkum
um tea kettle nitsagala pouring boiling
water on it stove stainless steel sink
ceramic sink faucet microwave
um i don't see it talking about i'll try
to look into the uh
the juicer the juicer um somebody online
is asking about steaming countertops
every year i talk about this every year
i suggest somebody should come out with
something and every year nobody does so
people try to go to bed bath and beyond
and buy one of those clothes steamers
and think you can caution it you cannot
kasha with steam
if the
taste was absorbed with liquid steam is
not liquid
so the only time you could use a steamer
is if the steam
when it hits the counter is producing a
liquid and the liquid is hot yaza
lettuce bow
industrial steamers produce steam that
when it hits the surface is liquid and
the liquid remains that temperature but
the overall majority of steamers do not
produce that
so i say every year somebody should
create a steamer for cashewing for
pesach that will meet the criteria and
get a hack sure and everyone can use it
to the best of my knowledge nobody has
and so i do not recommend using a
steamer to kasha
some people pour water along there
i'm not even going to say this out loud
because i don't want anyone to try
because it's crazy dangerous so i'm not
going to say it with an iron or a
steamer and heat the water that's on the
surface but don't even try it at home
very dangerous don't do it either pour
the boiling water eroy or cover the
counter is better i think we covered
cleaning the house and i think we
covered cashewing in the kitchen correct
yes
yeah i think that's fine
the bottom is on legs touching the sink
it's not actually touching the
base of the sink you're okay
it has to be meaningful enough that
taste is considered a clipper that is
not going through it so tin foil would
not be enough
tinfoil would not be enough it needs to
be a harder plastic or or something else
some board material or something like
that
okay any other kitchen questions
yes
oh good question
excellent so some of the minute not to
sell hamitz gamer
some of the practice that they don't
sell real actual comments so you need to
know whether something is real comments
or not and crc
very
conveniently has a list because we don't
always know what's real comments what's
not real comments um that's a stringency
some have strictly speaking many sell
all hummus so if you're putting it you
can even in your let's say your second
refrigerator people have a backup
refrigerator so you want to put your
unopened bottles or your non kosher
pasta ketchup your mustard in there you
can cover a shelf tape it cover it well
and you're good to go
you could also cover it cover the shelf
as long as you won't access it and
you're not accessing it then you are
good to go with it
you're good to go with it anything else
in the kitchen
yes
no
no great question you do not need to
let's talk about medicines and cosmetics
if you're cashering your sink and you're
only going to do flake shakes do you
need a sink insert
no because now you caution your sink
it's param and you're designating it as
meat so you're good
okay let's talk about medicines
cosmetics and toiletries and here again
we go to the crc when i was a child we
used to get a book in the mail
and it's great of allah who authored it
it was a great rev but also had a crazy
list of crazy
everything about everything and here is
the crc bar hashem is normalcy
all varieties of blush body sub
conditioners creams eyeshadow eyeliner
foundation ink lotions mascara nail
polish or women's pink shampoo stick
deodorant it's like there's been a
helmet are permitted to use on pesach
why
regardless of the ingredients inside
them why
not because they're not edible
to be humid it has to be edible nobody
eats blush body soap conditioner cream
eyeshadow eyeliner foundation lotion
mascara nail polish ointment shampoo
stick deodorant nobody eats any of those
things so you do not need to go with a
book to cvs and buy special for pesach
and drive yourself crazy and look for
these types of you do not need to
what about cologne and perfume
oh so here there's a little bit
deodorant different liquid deodorant
cologne perfume hairspray shaving lotion
sunscreen and wipes have an ingredient
called denatured alcohol denatured
alcohol
um can be edible can be edible and
therefore it's a problem
i won't say her name every year i say
her name people a former presidential
candidate's wife
who was an alcoholic would drink perfume
and drink liquid deodorant the addiction
was so strong that when she was denied
and deprived
actual alcohol it's edible an alcoholic
who's desperate will drink perfume
because the denatured alcohol in it
yeah so
these need to be confirmed to none of
comets so again anything inedible which
includes all the other things the soap
the blush the shampoo and so on they are
automatically kosher pesach because by
definition they don't have hummus
perfume and and spray deodorant might
contain and therefore one should confirm
what about lipstick who tried to sneak
in lipstick anna early on lipstick
mouthwash and toothpaste which contain
comments should not be used
starkey has a great list online crc has
a list online
uh star dash k
crcosher.org and ou kosher.org um they
all have great lists of each of these
things so that's when it comes to
cosmetics and toiletries we used to
drive ourselves crazy we do not and
should not um
with certain exceptions get a new
toothbrush make sure that you're using
toothpaste and mouthwash that
are confirmed to not have comets but
most of them do not
lipstick you do not need to buy a new
lipstick you can cut off the end of your
lipstick and use the lipstick as long as
it meets the
the criteria
and you're good to go what about
medicines
all medicine
no matter its ingredients are kosher for
pesach if you take a medicine that a
doctor thinks you should be taking you
must continue to take it
vitamins are not medicine the reason by
the way moshe held that medicine is not
food you don't make a bracha before you
take medicine
not consider eating onion kipper you can
swallow two tylenol and you've not
violated eating
liquid is different liquid is different
or if it's coated with something that is
a taste
some people like to suck on the advil
before they swallow them to taste good
advil is coated with a taste
or they make certain medicines that have
a taste that might be different but
medicine if you swallow it without
sucking on it if you swallow the
medicine whole that is not called the
food and it's not called eating and it's
not subject to the rules of humans so
all pull or pill or non-chewable tablet
medication with or without hammets that
one swallows is permitted
vitamin food supplements don't
necessarily fall in that category
sometimes the doctor tells you you have
to take that vitamin which for you as a
medicine and sometimes it's a vitamin
it's a nice vitamin that you take so
when it's a nice vitamin that you take
it might be a food and you shouldn't
take it unless you know it doesn't have
hummus if it's a vitamin that the doctor
said you need that vitamin you're short
on calcium you're short on vitamin d
you're short on whatever it is that for
you it's a medicine you need it then you
swallow it and it's non-chewable then
it's okay liquid chewable medications
contain kidney
can be taken by somebody who's sick as
we talked about kidneys earlier on but
an otherwise healthier person
should um
should only do it if they know that it
doesn't have kidneys okay that is
medicine
and
cosmetics and toiletries any ingredient
questions now when it comes to preparing
and cooking and cleaning
yeah wipe it down clean it but not for
pesach just because
yeah you have to drive yourself crazy
that's inedible it's not comments so for
the sake of your food you want to wipe
it out and clean it down but don't drive
yourself crazy
any other questions
one of the best benefits in the crc on
their on their app
under pesac they have shopping lists
click that and on shopping list they
have this incredible
before the app came out you haven't used
the princess when she went shopping
wherever she went the shopping guide and
conveniently they have either a check
mark an x mark or a triangle
check mark means acceptable without
pesach certification so for example air
freshener adhesive bandages this is in
alphabetical order as you can tell
blush body wash braces bleach
is all okay bags
brown paper bags are fine
um charcoal
oven cleaner these are all okay then
they have an x what's not acceptable for
pesach for example
cbd oil is not okay
beans bean sprouts or kidney us they're
not okay
uh coriander seeds are kidney os
um
plato has actual comets in it they have
an x and then they have a triangle which
is that it's okay if it has a pesach
certification so for example
cheese
baking powder
sodas
oil
orange juice they need to be kosher for
pesach so if you want to know does this
need to be kosher pesach is it fine
without it or is it never kosher pesach
print out your shopping guide or carry
it on your app and it will tell you
everything that you want to know i know
you're all tempted to ask me right now
what's the status of toms this year
what's the status of oil this year
what's the status of
water this year
look in the crc shopping guide i will
not be your crutch all right i'll be a
crutch what are your questions yeah
from um
what's coastal
i don't see it on the
oh
if you don't see it then it means it's
not but kirkland salmon from costco is
okay so you're good to go
if it's not there then you can't assume
it's okay
i don't know i didn't see it
apple juice crc just says has to have
kosher for pesach and the ou used to
list it that's why it's good to compare
and contrast because they overlap a lot
these agencies
yes
the barbecue can be captured it's a
little complicated the grates need
lebron go more so you need a blow torch
to kosher the grates and the rest of the
barbecue can be um cleaned and then you
turn the
you cover it and leave it on its highest
setting leaving kyle
or you could just get a new grape but
you still need to cash out the rest of
the micro the rest of the barbecue
with heat yes yeah yeah
question
[Music]
wegmans is a supermarket brand yeah
which we don't have here
why what page are you on
sixty-two is that what i told you then
you're good to go
[Music]
yeah what's the question let me ask my
contact right now
avocado oil
on face uh for the questions
how to crush our juicer
the other ingredient questions that have
come up
anything else
you don't need to buy new aluminum foil
correct
again unless
in the container of the aluminum foil
you think the chrome is dropped in there
right correct exactly then you're good
to go
what is
right but it's a but it's a cream
it's an edible you can't eat it it's not
presumes you're talking about something
edible if it's inedible it can't be
hummus even if it has the ingredient
that cometh would have yes
that's an excellent question
it's a good question should answer
starkey
it's a good question it's a guy i don't
know i followed the crc
it's an excellent question
wishing everyone in one moment yes
almost
yes you can run the self-clean cycle yes
most of all
happy
joyful save the spring cleaning just get
ready for pesach
next year together in your shalom
