#133: Behind the Bima - Special Elul Edition

behind the scenes look at how they got to where they are and what keeps them going welcome to behind the bema good evening I'm Robert from Goldberg and I am so pleased to bring you a very special edition from Aaron tissral from the land of Israel edition of behind the Bima with tremendous gratitude to our General sponsors the Kramer Senator sponsored in honor of our dear friends Ellie and Rena privilege spending some time in Israel this summer for Hashem celebrating several simchas visiting the family and took advantage of the opportunity while there to meet with some truly extraordinary people you know our rabbis encourage us that godo shimus sometimes when you're exposed to when you meet with when you were in the presence of great people the simple what seems to be casual conversation question and answer the opportunity to connect and to observe and to watch and to witness and to experience and bask in their life can be greater even than their learning greater than their Tech technical Torah teaching and so I tried to take advantage I do every trip and this was no different to meet with some Extraordinary People some I met with who did not agree to be included in this video series and even each of the conversations in which we were privileged to be able to take a snippet we were blessed to be have a broader and longer conversations on a range of topics we can learn so much from being in the presence of really truly great people who are plugged in and who are connected and who are fully present in all that they do and who lead in remarkable and extraordinary ways so we had the privilege to be able to meet with and to spend time with some really really special people I'm excited to extract some of their wisdom and some of their teaching some of their lessons and to be able to bring it to you first of all someone who's become a dear friend a teacher and source of inspiration to me and so many others revlio D Leo of course lost his beloved wife Lucy two of his daughters were brutally murdered by terrorists unimaginable Act of Terror a family simply enjoying a tool and marking the festive holiday and came home incomplete and missing three members and I connected Leo through that loss when he spoke about listening to our shiram and baraf Hashem we were able to spend some time together during his Shiva and have kept up since and I'm excited to be able to bring to you some of his inspiration of somebody who's gone through such loss and yet lives with such faith and he shares a little bit of that with us reviews always smiling always happy always positive always brilliant we had a full behind the Bima interview with him and we got a snippet a nugget to be able to take for the ello and to get ready for these days oh I went to his house on Friday night on Shabbos but Marcus host two to 300 guests every single Shabbos a scholar of Torah but really A godo of a great great person talking about what it's like to host so many people vihaska Weinfeld the Rob in the basement brilliant mind incredible Torah each end every week someone who visited our community this year and we're privileged to have a relationship with Judah Michelle a dear friend of mine for many years executive director of Camp Hask and an individual his book by Derek his must reading for this time of year and all year Roger exemplifies those teachings and I'm so excited he shared some of his wisdom with us Schneider a dear dear friend of mine someone I've been connected with for a long time and I love yeshiva's Torah shraga and deals with students in their Gap year and is doing amazing things in the land of Israel alter shlita the Guerra rosh hashiva of Shaw alter his Torah is incredible again an extraordinary gave us significant time and shares his wisdom with you and Shiva makobal a great Sadiq of yerushalayimer of gamliel the holy of holies of positivity and inspiration of Galileo's extremely truly special talking about living with with faith and how to feel the presence of Hashem always and forever throughout our day and throughout our lives each of them shared when they hear that word eloh what they think of and what it means to them and I know I was touched and inspired it's transforming my elbow and I hope it will impact yours as well so as we are counting up towards the significant time a time that shouldn't make us be filled with anxiety and panic and fear and worry but belief and confidence in ourselves and our ability to transform that this be our year to dream and to picture and imagine who we can be and make that a reality please enjoy the special conversations with these extraordinary people from what was a remarkable trip [Music] okay with my dear friend lady we were dear friends on the shamas for years before we even met in person and of course we all know the tragic circumstances in which in which we met but my life has been so enriched and I and the rest of the Jewish people are so incredibly inspired by your resilience and most of all by your faith by Ramona by constantly speaking about both Hashem and the Jewish people a new Devotion to both so for people who struggle people are going through their own hardship large and small and who feel shrimp doesn't love me where is he how could he let this happen it's obviously a difficult question and no one has all the answers but how do you every day seem to demonstrate a continued faith and passion to Hashem even after the horrific tragedy you've been through so thank you um I have a quote from my Rabbi Ephraim Goldberg and we're shares but uh the trick I think the strongest trick has been to focus on the good and I should try and not think so much about the bad and people came up to me and said to me uh many times what can I do and they've listened to me their problems I said to them look you just told me your business is going bankrupt that your marriage is on the Rocks the kids that's been cute I said but at the end of the day you've told me five problems you've got I can count on one hand I said at the same time uh how many miracles happen to you this morning right you got out of bed that's my Rabbi Ephraim says you got out of bed your feet work there's Gravity the Water Works you've got uh you know your your digestion work I said that's an infinite number of Miracles so I said a practical thing you can do and I say this to the kids as well and this is something that Lucy has been our kids doing start a WhatsApp group with one friend with you know two or three friends and every day getting the habit of sending three things that were good that happened to you today I got to work today this morning uh there wasn't too much traffic I had a lovely conversation with a friend you know my coffee today tasted beautiful that's that's all right and and just getting the habit every day saying three good things happen because people are out of a practice and we look at life and we focus on on that it's unbelievable it's it's intellectually people can know that you can Journal that you can add them up and see one column is such a bigger number but it's still our mind goes to to what's missing and what's difficult if you could send one message to the Jewish people if you could take out a billboard if you had a bumper sticker If you could broadcast a message to Clyde Israel around the world what would be your message as we're entering a little over coming to this what is the message to Jews around the world so I think you know it's coming uh well we're in the time of two Vats you were made to return and uh there's no greater returner to return to land of Israel and as we've been discussing the majority of the Jews in the world now live in Israel are 50 million Jews in the world and seven and a half or more live now in Israel the Mitzvah to live in Israel is now the writer is a Torah Mitzvah and a lot of rabbinical Mitzvah so all the heterium all the permission uh not to come to Israel in the past which depended on the book of making a living and so forth no longer apply according to uh as I understand it so the message that I miss rails to come back home the economy here is fantastic the people here are fantastic the culture is fantastic don't believe what you see in the news if you see anything negative about Israel it's as we said the Citra Akra are trying to prevent you from coming back home the people are fantastic on all sides and I can testify that I walk in the street in Tel Aviv and halfway in Jerusalem in mesharim and I get hugged by everybody and YouTube will get hugged by everybody whether it's physically or just emotionally well spiritually everyone here our brothers and sisters and we live together in peace the Harmony and things are only going to get much better from here probably I know I speak on behalf of the Jewish people in continuing to send you our love and our strength and our comfort for you for your children for your family and we continue to learn in memory of at least the younger girls I know I subscribe and print out each week to prepare vote and so many others do we thank you for channeling so much of your pain into inspiration into love and into positive messaging that we're all continuing to learn from Hashem should give you the strength to continue to do it and to inspire and to teach us thank you for your inspiration for me and keep those and we'll ask your incoming and uh and keep inspiring me thank you thank you so much [Music] to take advantage of the special time everyone's time to have an image of what they want what is that great you gonna look like if you don't know what you want who's normally you're gonna get it's for service else in minority he made a warm solid teeth block of gold it says Nicholas he had to explain to him and even that was difficult so we had to show him an oracle age he had to show him an image of them at all if he wasn't going to build it anyway the whole thing is to be a miracle why go into such a glance to describe exactly what it's going to look like an English of it and he answers [Music] foreign [Music] foreign incredibly indebted and grateful to you for opening your home to me to my family to visit of the holy places and holy spots in this holy land and in this holy city of you shall I am this home is one of the holiest it's not only a basement of Torah this has to be the greatest in the world because in a few hours from now two to three hundred people are going to be in every nook and cranny corner and out the door and down the path all coming to celebrate Chavez together with you and you and your family generously hosting and it's just an incredible example of the whole world the revampus home and I just want to say ramakras won't allow me to so uh we'll have to without his paying attention we all need to partner we all need to help because two to three hundred people you know there are people who have 20 guests on Rosh Hashanah 20 guests loved on Thanksgiving and they talk about it all year round that they're prepared they have to cook they're at the shop they had to come up with a menu to host 20 people imagine having 200 to 300 people every Shabbos people many of whom have nowhere else to go people who want to feel in a place of no judgment people who need a little love people who want to shop this environment people who are tourists people who are Seminary Yeshiva students people who have no home no roof over their head and this is the address they all come to and it's not a burden that should fall on the macros family alone so I want to appeal to everybody my family is going to sponsor at least they Chavez everybody should have a hilac.org m-a-c-h-l-i-smachus.org and do your part everybody you don't have to peel you don't have to cook you don't have to set up you don't have to clean up you don't have to give up your home all you have to do is the easiest thing there is to partner which is send a little bit so that you can be part of this incredible Mitzvah to the 300 people every shop so in Marcus maybe let's start with that what's the secret tell everybody how do you create a Shabbos meal of 200 300 people can feel it I can tell you how we can have one additional person yes if the Rob well it's it's not just speaking about but come tonight and maybe teach us here in in in the environment in Shabbat this will Elevate I mean the number the number that you government may be exaggerated I don't count the events of people but I could tell you that compared to the uh 14 million Jews in the world it's a very very deep version it's nothing it's like you know I mean one of our dreams is that everyone should have Shabba everyone should have a home and everyone no one should be alone on especially on Shabbat especially and uh so yeah I don't I don't think these numbers are so so impressive that's right Hashem if everyone everyone will do this so we'll start reaching Universe higher and higher numbers I think the the key is so many people are looking for love so many people are looking for a certain family environment that don't have families certain people looking for Shabbat certain people are looking to come to try to prove that religion is so ridiculous so they come and think like I think I forgot what a show that and then yeah so there's it's a wide variety of people and then there are people who just are spiritually hungry physically hungry curious and they all make their way so what advice would you have some struggle they had an image or a vision or a dream of their Chavez table they would have a family they would have guessed and all you would do is sing and share the Victor and it would be elevated and the reality kicks in and it's hard people are tired they're distracted how does any advice any practical tips how to run a Shoppers table that people feel connected that they love that they want to come back to first of all I don't think I don't think numbers are necessarily the issue I think that one person is a whole whole world [Music] sustaining one person is the whole world so it doesn't seem in terms of large numbers one additional guest is probably not that taxi and not that burdensome to most people if it is not someone maybe they could direct them to somewhere else where I don't feel that it is a burden because you know we have a concept as a concept of adults says so let's say someone doesn't feel I can't I can't yet open my home I need privacy I need relaxation I need my space okay I mean so so that other person down the block was willing to have someone or that other individual from the from the civilians so that's also that's also a very great very great accomplishment I think that to genuinely uh appreciate the people that come the concept of your thermometer balance but they're not that I'm I'm giving you'll eat my food that's not my food but even eat my food or come to my house not my house either except it's the house of Hashem Greg Miller said this way you put a misuse on on the doors you think it's your house but even if you you would make believe that it is my house and you would make believe it is my food I I think that to to understand at least just the fact that they come what a great what a great opportunity for anybody that's that's hosting and what a great opportunity not to look at it as if the person who's the host is is the giver and the person entering is the receiver perhaps it's the opposite in the end how do you engage people how does how does one practical suggestions how to make a Shabbos table that people want to come back to I think that if a person is genuinely connected to shabbat and themselves there are different ways of reaching levels of perfection but if it's genuine it's sincere the matters that are stated in an honest way in a real way I think often speak for themselves I think there's a a certain appreciation of the genuine nature of a real Shabbat one of the greatest gifts one of the greatest gifts that Hashem gives us so many people in the world even people who are religiously observant I'll show you I'm sure you know that they don't view Shabbat as a gift okay I keep Shabbat you know I'll read thousands of wars and if you want to shut that over you know so I think to to show the the positive songs The Glory The Joy the radiant to expose people to that now in addition to being an incredible cast of this home this extraordinary holy space and home it's such a it's supposed to be here so urban office of course is a teacher of Torah is a rebbe a RAV and uh yeah let's say I learned from my students okay a student yes so ello we're in ello and it used to be that people heard the word hello and the walls would shake and reverberate and people would tremble and they'd sit there and they'd fear LOL and still what does ello mean to Rabbi Marcus that word ELO from when we dance until now actual rush kodash and as we're going to count up the days heading to The Young and the rhyme what's a Kabbalah what's something to take upon ourselves how can we immerse ourselves in this month so they're not just days on the calendar but they transform us I can't tell others what to think upon themselves I can tell you what I think about a little bit on on a little I think about um foreign the needs of others to think not only not only about ourselves not only got our own needs not only that our own year not only about our own health and our own economic stability but maybe ishary and maybe the more that we can solidify a connection with others maybe that's the preparation for free um I've often thought that the reading of Rosh Hashanah morning in the Torah is the reading that the gemara quotes as a proof text on the vacation when when does God bring the special blessing upon Abraham Isaiah it's after Abraham prays for the welfare of others so maybe that's part of the key available to broaden our perspective maybe not just work on ourselves in terms of Our Lives also working on our connection with Hashem of each person is a reflection of Hashem that's one of the ways to get close to Hashem also unbelievable I think unbelievable I I um you know I came in today I know there were there were there were guests there are people who just show up they sleep over they're invited you know about them you don't know about them they sleep in this home they sleep in the car they sleep in the courtyard it's just a welcoming inviting loving place that people know with no judgment and with open arms they're going to be able to find find an address how does how does one open their heart to make that room for other people you know it's one thing to to write a check or drop off a meal or drive carpool and someone went through a difficult time but to literally share your space your home to make it available and open for anyone who needs and and people in need in a way that makes it challenging or compromising maybe they don't maybe they they eat a lot maybe they speak rudely maybe they don't maybe they bring an order with them maybe and how does one bring with family on board to be willing to share their space and their home in in such a way to love other people I don't mean to be repetitive I really don't but the concept of your home and your space I think that's the area of error if I consider this to be my space so there's no more available for me it's mine is it but it's not my space I mean this is the space that I've been given as a gift it's the home of God this is the god space what a privilege to live in yeah all places in the world that with all the respect to the flower I mean I couldn't agree I hope it's not that you know yes in the center of the world so of course one feels a certain sense that this is not Invasion it's as much their home as it's my mom anyway because I happen to them here you know they could also be living there children pick up on that and therefore they chosen the grandchild they all pick up that that's the that's the family philosophy I hope so you have to speak for the children yeah this they're like yeah cooking and then surely that's something that and it is on my way we tried our best to inculcate this value and hopefully in a way that I think they will also appreciate it and they will also be involved but thank God we have the children are married and their homes I hope much greater than this one for those who have not yet read the uh the wonderful book on Robinson attorney markless it's a much safer we're in the Montebello we learn a special emphasis on Muslim personal growth and that's it's a Muslim safer it's impossible to read it not be inspired and want to emulate and imitate but also another big focus of the book which I'm sure doesn't even scratch the surface of the truth of which Robert Marcus is a great partner and an equal example is anemuna and that's the last question I'll ask and I'm so grateful for opening on particularly as this place is about to be transformed with tables and chairs and packs and cooking and serving and it's unbelievable and everyone should come and volunteer peel cooking volunteer come in and join the Shabbat I'm gonna join too because if the only people who come to your house are needy people it could be if you're watching also I don't know what needies to find this but you know what it say it says if you open up your home why so then four people will feel comfortable so I studied it and they'll put me on the noise is very close to the heart in this area he says don't don't limit your home to poor people because if you limit your home to poor people poor people will not feel comfortable they'll feel like that I'm going through the house where everybody has to know that I'm so but if you're sitting next to someone I don't need this house yeah so everybody should please come so if you want to invite them invite everybody not to volunteer invite them to participate and their body will camouflage the people who everyone's invited in any in any capacity and make it possible again at macquest.org to be able to continue your house so so not only example I'm kind of examples of immuno so just to close with a little bit of a of a sensitive question one that I think that people need a lot of physics and I and all are continuing to always strive which is people know sort of conceptually of course there's Hashem is a creator of the universe so we talk to him we do Mitch listen his expectations of us but then in the personal moments of of struggle or tragedy or loss are you sort of In from from enormous and consequential to sometimes what what could be defined as a smaller inconsequential anything that that can be fixed or replaced or repaired and in those moments people feel where's Hashem does he really love me does he really care about me does why would he cause this pain why would he take that person why would he even just stand by and be a spectator to the hurting to the pain to the loss that I am experiencing and and the rabbit son who's whose energy is still felt and light all over this not only this special home but but all the world left this world at such a young age and and such a painful for you for your family and and for all of claw Israel and yet you at least from from my limited perspective still have that positivity and that optimism and that hope and that joy for life and that emuna and that faith in Hashem as a palpable real presence in your life all the time so what would your message be those those who are struggling who feel far or distant or even abandoned from Hashem how can they continue to find him and lean in on him and know that he's in their life even after suffering difficult or or the ultimate the ultimate loss which is of a wife a mother a grandmother a child a family member someone Irreplaceable the ultimate sense of tragedy first of all I think in terms of our perspective as people let's say who are connected to people who are going through these struggles or people going through it themselves but surely the community those you know friends of theirs or relatives of theirs I think more important than the question is how do we explain God and which is important I think is is reaching out and providing a an environment of closeness to provide even sometimes just the shoulder to lean on or to cry on if a dog God believe is going to interpretation but somebody's going through difficulty and we we can't speak in the name of why God does what God does uh maybe there are certain people I mean we'll share a battle maybe the people know more than most Alabama but it's probably yeah it's challenged by this very question so I surely can't answer the question about your benefits so I assume you don't expect me to to speak you know um right and then one answer sometimes is sometimes in in hindsight looking back at something maybe when a person is going through it it's impossible to to see uh maybe maybe that's one way of understanding maybe to understand a certain level of humility before God that we don't understand everything that there's a greater picture that were only shown certain small pieces of the of the great puzzle and maybe to get through the difficulties I think in almost everyone's life there were stages which looked very dark and somehow they got through when they were going through it when they were going through it it seemed like it'll never end and it looks like an another turn in a tunnel another tournament and then finally they get to the end and maybe if they can look back at the time that they themselves the person's life when everything was so was so hopeless and yet they were able to emerge in a triumphant's way maybe they can help them so maybe focusing on a past event in each person's life or maybe focusing even in the even in the the painful aspect I don't want to speak about ourselves but you know our family of course what was the tournament with Andy's uh departure but you know over the years I think the children the family learned to to appreciate so much of what Annie did and still in a certain sense still doing you know indirectly of course through her teaching that there's a certain sense of well we could focus on the on the great laws we can focus on the fact that thank God and he was alive in this world for 57 years that's 57 years of blessing could it have been you know twice that yeah could have been twice that Brad Hashem has a reason and I think that in each situation I count one's blessings to look at the the positive side to look at what what is there what instead of what's the the part of the cup that's still full I said we've got that's exactly all this one one possibility I don't know I don't know if that answers the questions very meaningful very meaningful and meaningful by personal examples so much thank you opening your home to me to my family to visit it's one of the highlights I know whoever's watching you all know you all know Rob Goldberg so this is the person you're leaving or maybe he's already leaving the whole world my humble blessing from your shall I am to you is that you should be able to move forth with the great Beauty and the great love and the great wisdom that you've been doing and bringing bringing so many people closer and closer to themselves and closer together it's Israel is it all right so I should do it and the ritual 14 billion Jews and then at the same time afterwards seven and a half billion lunges and bring about the highest levels thank you so much thank you not only for teaching us to the words thank you for teaching us the example and in this special home I hope everybody will will partner hope everyone will come and experience the magic that is a Shabbos meal at the Marcus home and we'll partner to enable everybody to be able to have that magic everyone should be blessed with the sweetest year and anyone going through difficulty I hope that when you see this when you see this video by the time the video is over all the all the problems dissipate into nothingness and all of them should be solved and get get journey and uh but first of all with my first Kabbalah is not to give up and let's be hopeful that as I get older I'll connect more and more with Ellen I'm not throwing in the towel I'm not giving it up now in Practical terms I think you know evil they say is Russia Davis why why would ELO have anything to do with let's see about him so you know that um there's another Rusty Davis that appears in the Bala Turin where he says that um I think that's when when the heart is alive Oreo we live in the world and we see nothing we feel nothing we're not sensitive to anything and we don't we we don't connect with everybody um but the more person tries to come to Milas solo start singing Because the world is so beautiful there's so much to see and connect with their abundance level and not to live in a world building uh occupied with ourselves with our needs with our with our ego but Ben still look out so foreign [Music] makes the extra effort when walking outside here the birds chirping and see the grass growing and within the sitter and within this farm and within the food one seeds to find the culture bar for when each of these things even even more of an effort novel I think that you know the the the the the man actually you know has an implies and and a person could I think that to many in when you know this season comes around The Thrill Is flow on a different level and the it's an opportunity to open your heart and open your eyes and and connect with the the next mother eventually it's hard to say practical you know because what's it mean practice to connect more does one have to disconnect from other things so some good and it's obviously disconnect more from technology there are distractions there is now respite there's wasted time but sometimes some people there were there were people who took a Tinus dibler when speaking the whole month of Allah I guess they were disconnected to connect more but in our generation there's one need to disconnect in order to connect or you can connect either within the existing connections well you know there is a plastic anxiety in basically when is the anxiety in they silicon let's face it again so you see that this that was your basically it came it has to be anxiety in there has to be exclusively that you don't have to block out things in order to create a sanctuary foreign in order to create a mocking for for The Sinner it's impossible to just throw in you know the the heat is Crave in the same bag I mean it does there does have to be a certain amount of disconnecting but I wouldn't say a tiny stable because really I mean talking to Eden isn't itself enough like you know the the result says that every morning before we done should say have any metabolism so yeah I give an example that is some directions right so this is moving on but what you just said A Rainy metabolism so it's really about about doing it and connecting with people and and and and the you know the the freeholders brings the name of the safe they'll yo rabbit brings in the name of the Safeway America that the Russian David Seville was which means that it's about reaching out to people it's not about you know being absorbed with yourself once said that he walks on Earth in keeper with a sour face he says he said the person should create a pleasant atmosphere so listen I was Labor I think is kind of extreme right of extreme because especially the science labor is also who affects other people let's say a tyness of eating face you I mean foreign [Music] there's no question about it but at the same time we're immediately if the person has to uplift the spirit because you know axis doesn't lead to anywhere but we know that I mean if a person feels down he's not going to go anywhere you know my review of crime was soccer and said about mijo is what's happened to be you remember Israel is a positive thing why should they leave he said but the key is that if it's racist Hearts to the extent that he can't function and he can't do what he's meant to do now which is go to war that's that's not the year of that the other floor carrying it around that's that's the that's not the year that that that that you described what is interested in the year has to be empowering as it says so really uh uh through Euros your minds to make a person more alive and and and and and and the and that's just all them paralyzed if it trializes a person it's it's it's coming from the wrong place amazing thoughts well thank you Ross thank you for allowing me to talk to you thank you for hosting okay okay well [Music] thank you for tremendous opportunity and conversation very quickly I don't know how to get a mindset available by beating ourselves up is it a time of anxiety or worry and panic a time of cynical what is it really Judah do to get into the Owl monsters yeah oh just to paraphrase what the Rob just said the only saying these days that we're we're clapping off hate and we're trying to wake our hearts up and trying to get beneath the surface of who we really are and study our intentions and our motivations and we say that God is the one who examines the heart we will imagine that what God is seeing is all the garbage that we scroll through and all the bad stuff we did and all the missed opportunities and that's how we have to make right because mentioned write down all the bad stuff we ate to notice that we can correct our behavior and then here I shouldn't have dessert then I should say this and I had stink eye on that person here and have a disrespectful my parents and I yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah I'm a liar he always says is that that stuff is not a secret like that that stuff is not it's toughness to go through search through the garbage we stink if we spin around in the mud it'll be dirty really what this time is all about is to kind of like wake ourselves up and touch that point in our hearts which is which is beneath the surface the late Partridge all the good stuff the Mitzvah so good intention oh yeah I really am but who I really am not all that business and as much as this Darkness the light is so much much of this password the truth is so much more real all that other stuff doesn't last it doesn't it all the things that I did holy that I did positive where I grew where I was generous and magnanimous and really myself and to
