did i win this title isn't it
i have to remember you know i always
make sure to change the time
i usually button it but uh you know
this is on zoom anyway the recording is
so crummy you can't even tell what time
where
i keep disappearing in the background
over here you don't even like you know
sheesh
well michael left me
yeah
expects me to do this myself he keeps
saying so where's the next podcast but i
have to do it by myself
yeah
is this recording
i think it's recording so can you stop
it
oh let me take it out
he left me here anyway
let him edit it
all right hold on
he knows because i do a clap and then he
knows when to when to start editing
everything so i that's my cue
all right would they have to put on my
professional voice my rabbit
hello this is rabbi yolovsky
[Laughter]
all right
ready
hi this is dominic
[Music]
okay
i'm sorry
hi this is dominolowski and welcome to
the roberto show and whether you're
watching with our friends over at tony
time whoever you watch or listen to the
raviolsky show we're excited to have you
along for the experience
i got some bits of business to take care
of first of all we have
a
sponsorship
now you know we've fallen behind a
little bit i don't know if i mentioned
this last time but my producer's not
here and he left me to do this on my own
and you know i i uh
i'm totally irresponsible and there's no
reason that anyone should leave me in
charge of anything
so uh i'll give you a little idea uh of
this uh
sponsorship and this is from a good
friend of the rubble yolonovsky show who
is a constant supporter and uh listener
and and email her and you know just
whatever one of my favorite
this episode is sponsored on the
occasion of my 58th birthday the 26th of
tamu's july 6th
well a happy belated birthday
uh as this course for me a reformer
shleimer shalom and a good zebra shaney
amen
ala good to see all kinds of good things
and that brings me to oh i have two
other bits of business one is
uh i went to a early shabbos uh minion
uh here because i'm old the idea of
starting my shabbos student at nine
o'clock at night is just too much for me
because you know i i doze off in the
middle and stuff and
you know so uh i go to early chavez and
uh
my good friend and old neighbor uh howie
uh maizel's was the schlitz sieber and
he mentioned to me that his wife is a
regular
uh um
participant in the rebellowski show so i
want to give her a shout out
so uh
nice to see you
and then i want to tell you something
that i i wanted to do which i think is
very exciting i hope you find it as
exciting as i do
and that is
um that i uh
i was gonna go around i'll tell you
you know i'm not really good at keeping
things to myself
you know
somebody said to me once i i see
sometimes when you're speaking you pause
and you think if whether or not what
you're going to say is appropriate and
regardless you say it anyway
so i'll share with you i i i give some
thought to this yeah i really do so what
i wanted to do is go around to uh
crush it and important people famous
people and ask them i record them saying
you know uh you know
shana tova simultan to the listeners
of the robert elovsky show
and i thought that would be just like a
nice thing to put out before shashana
and then i said
you know what would be even more fun
since we have this online community and
i know you exist because i keep meeting
you
everywhere all around the world
yeah i was in arizona i found people
listening to the rabbi alaski's show
yeah there are people all over i get
emails from people in
in
countries that are not israel or america
or canada yeah
but uh you know who england okay england
also maybe other like weird countries
i i know people are very sensitive when
you're in front of their country i was
doing a program once in london i
remember
and this
i asked the question this girl starts to
answer
and uh
and i said that's not an english accent
she says no i'm from slovenia
i said slovakia
she says none of slovenia i said there's
a country called slovenia
i said you people are amazing every 20
people get together and make their own
country you know but you have your own
language and everything and she went
oh people don't find that funny i don't
know
being an american and even worse than
that in new york uh we know that
everybody hates us and we don't care we
revel in it but
anyway so people were listening all over
and i thought wouldn't it be great i i
need your participation to make this
work if it happens it happens it doesn't
doesn't
record
a short message of yourself
the queen of atmo wishing everybody in
our extended family of the rebellowski
show we're coming on
uh you know to our anniversary show
coming up but before rosh hashanah it
would be a beautiful thing if
my listeners would like a little
participation just to give a shout out
and wish uh sir simultaneous
to all the other listeners and
help us bring together this level of
camaraderie
because uh you know
it's it's you who make this meaningful
yeah
i'm basically sitting in my room talking
to myself
something that i have mastered over the
years
people say to me why do you talk to
yourself and i said sometimes i just
have the need for intelligent
conversation
but uh but we would love to i think this
would be so much fun but of course we
need your participation for that
okay so those are those are our bits of
business i need to take care of and now
uh we will uh go back to what we were
doing which was perky of us
this is our last round of thinking of us
and i went to take a look
i say i'm gonna do a mission i don't do
a mission i do one line
from one
uh mishnah in one parrot each time
there's so much to do i mean we could do
victory of us here
all the time you know if there's enough
interest if we had if we had real
sponsorships like you know people
actually wanted to do this i would do
this every single day
but right now it's like you know i'm
kind of pushing it you know
once a week as you could probably tell
but uh you know
go to the ravioli studios and
i i'm getting emails from people you
know when is the we want to be part of
the live audience we're live audience
i'm sitting here in my room in front of
a zoom camera
oh how the mighty have fallen anyway
but uh it's better than my my very first
one michael filmed in my room i was
sitting in a corner it looked like a
hostage video so this is a you know
a step further you get to see my
bookcase which if you don't notice
this one is falling over you see this
over here
it keeps tilting a little bit more you
know and uh
there are those who would suggest that
one day it will tumble
yeah
but uh
i think faith
has that ability to keep things secure
yeah
because as we enter into the high
holiday season all of our lives are a
little off-kilter
yeah so we need to we need to organize
them and straighten ourselves
um
it's uh
there's a beautiful
field that we sing in keep an eye
baked and it's a number of michelin
like the
clay in the hand of the potter who can
either form it or
destroy it and turn it back into clay
beautiful one but there's one that's
very interesting it says
like the curtain
in the hand of the rokin
who either makes the stitches go
straight or
or
they're not straight
you think okay i understand you you
shatter the glass you you melt the metal
you know
okay it's not straight and i have to
tell you that one always had special
meaning to me because it's
sometimes your life's not bad it's just
not straight it's just a little
off-kilter you know
it's not aligned right
so like that bookcase it needs to be
realigned
okay
uh let's do a a little picky of us from
parikshilishi
[Applause]
in everybody
happy beloved is a person
beloved to hashem that he created him
with selamela kim the
image of god
hebrews
an extra level of love as he told him
that we were creative and seldom it
brings up
beloved are the jewish people that
they're called
how precious is the show that hashem
gave us the torah the cliffhanger
islam
okay so i'm not going to go into all of
these points there's one point here that
i want to address
we are beloved
there's an extra level of belovedness
that hashem told us
so
it's one thing if you gave me something
very valuable
it's another thing if you tell it now
there's no vested interest from my
kurdish borough
my father
who
he he had such street smarts he knew
how to how to work with anybody and how
to get around anybody so occasionally he
would go with my mother to uh
you know
to some restaurant that was really
packed and it was a waiting list or a
show or whatever it is
and
you had to slip the maitre d some money
or he wouldn't even pay attention to you
so he would give him a bill the guy
would grab it and he says no no look at
it
here we go oh yes sir we have a table
right now
now i don't know what the nomination it
was but evidently whatever everybody was
giving my father gave more and he knew
how to move to the head of the line yeah
this was a concept that he used many
times when i was in yeshiva
day school and i would get into trouble
he had a standard response would a
donation help and very often the answer
was yes
[Laughter]
but okay yeah he's giving him the
abilities
take a look see what it is
and i want you to appreciate what i
which i gave you over there yeah
that's not what this is
this is something that is so much more
important
i want to tell you a story
somebody told me
that
he
calls
his son's
teachers
and his daughter's teachers to find out
how they're doing
and they say oh you know he's doing good
with this i'm good with that you know he
says i get a lot of novice and i don't
tell them he says
i don't tell him that i called
he said i want him to know
and i said do you understand how much
more meaningful it would be
if you told your son you know i called
you rebbe and he says you're doing great
in class
why would you hold that back
tells the story
that uh
there was a shiva in a house
and they bring him in to bring to make
dominion and the boys are all sitting
there
not one of them is from
and he sees the bookcases filled with
swarm
and he pulls down
and there's notes written all over in
the margins
he says he was
and he talks to somebody and they say oh
yeah he was victimized he says
so how come his children are this way he
says he never told his children
he never told his children
he did everything he did he did quietly
he kept it to himself
and he said
that's a mistake
if you do something good you should tell
your children
you should let them know about it they
should see it i know everybody said no
no we want to keep it hidden we want to
keep it secret you know
but the fact of the matter is that
kids
kids people everyone learns
okay i've heard this from many people
who have been honored by organizations
nobody wants to be the honoree to them
nobody because you know that they're not
giving it to you on the basis of
exceptional merit they're doing it
because they want you to give a
donation and uh
i know this for a fact i used to be in
jewish community work
and people said to me uh you know how
much do you want you know for you for
this honor yes uh right up
said such and such he says what i could
be honored at a national dinner for that
amount of money
why would i come to your little dopey
thing
you know
you know how much it's going to buy you
but there's another flip side when they
give it to you they're not just giving
it to you based on how much you're going
to give but how much you're going to
bring in
how many tables are you going to fill so
you have to go to your friends and say
i'm being honored i want you to come to
the dinner i want you to take an ad out
in the journal i want you to give a
donation and you know that when they get
honored they're going to come to you
and they're going to ask you
so i heard from more than one honoree
so this is the last thing i want to do
but i know that if i stand up and do it
other people will as well
so i'm doing it so other people will see
because otherwise they don't know
the amazing thing
and therefore when uh people would like
to do things quietly or anonymously
they're told
people should know what you're doing
because it sets an example for other
people
so we do something and we come home and
we tell our children
i used to travel years ago before there
was corona i don't know 10 10 15 years
ago and i used to fly all around the
country all around the world i'd speak
in many different places people used to
pay me to go and speak and i would fly
in airplanes and i had a carry-on case
and only i knew how to lower the little
handle to it and and it was like really
exciting i would go around and
you know
it wasn't that exciting i hit airports i
hate flying
airplane seats were made for lesser men
than me
midgets and dwarfs but anyway
but uh
you know uh once i got
points it was it was pretty good because
then i could move up at least to economy
plus you know and
the guy behind me when he puts his the
guy in front of me when he puts his seat
down it's not like in my lap you know so
so uh
i was on an ill flight years ago i
remember
and then the guy behind in front of me
put his seat all the way down and
you know the person behind me said don't
put your seat down because i'm eating
you know they bring around the meals
and i and i look at the stores and i
said where where do you want me to put
this
so he has the person in front to move it
up just you know so i could eat and then
put it back down on top of me you know
so okay but i'm not crazy about flying i
get very nervous i get nervous i'm a
nervous flyer you know
i'm always worried i won't have any
place to put my overhead bag
yeah i'm i'm nervous who am i going to
sit next to you know fight with the
elbow on the on the armrest the whole
time you know it's uh
the whole thing is tension so then you
get someplace and yeah you know running
around and then traveling it sounds a
lot more exciting than it actually is
yeah
but um
but when i come back
i would i used to do it at the shoppers
table when i come home i do a hazard of
the trip
and i said oh you know i got onto the
plane and then you know somebody would
sit next to me and suddenly they got
bumped up the business class i had a
seat empty next to me you know i got
there and this happened hey
so uh so i came back from one trip and
one of my kids said
so abba you're going to tell us all the
siata de shmaya stories that you had
and and i was i was moved by that
because okay i i was doing it to like
share with everybody what my experiences
were but my kids were hearing the siata
de shmaya
there's a tremendous amount of seattle
to destroy that
hashem because helps me out in these
trips and all the great things and i
want my kids to hear it
because
we all know this the famous thing you
know moshe
feinstein said what killed the american
jewelry was a schweitzer zaini
that uh
that everybody would complain oh yes
it's only interesting yet
i just saw a
a write-up
about uh urbach the love of tavario who
was nifta
and uh he said you know in old jerusalem
there was such terrible poverty yeah
so they said you know your grandfather
he lives with the same
poverty but all of his kids and
grandchildren were from what happened to
other families
he says because we never lived in
poverty
poverty was something that was there it
was the hunger was a constant problem
but no one talked about it
we talked about oh did you see the
beautiful studio that we see we learned
that nobody felt deprived
nobody ever felt deprived
when we're shocked went to see rebel
joshua's house he says how did you bring
up all these kids in this house
he says me so i married are you levine's
daughter
this
is well what's the story
he said you know ariel levin didn't have
too grush to his name you know and when
i got engaged
so he said oh and i'm going to give the
apartment
he's going to give me the apartment i
was going to give an apartment yeah
so the day of the casa he takes a rope
and he hangs it up in the middle of the
apartment and puts up a sheet he says
this half is for me mama and the kendall
welcome the other half is for you
he says that's how i lived
until the second daughter got engaged
and he promised her an apartment
so i moved into this place it's one room
but it's you know it's spacious
they say that
there wasn't enough room for beds
so half the kids stayed up all night and
learned the other half slept and then in
the morning they went to the issue and
the other half slept
they did in shifts
yeah
and uh
nobody felt deprived
let me feel surprised then you have
people where everybody has their own
room and they're deprived
you know they can't they can't double up
for one shopping so that guests could
have a place to stay no i can't i can't
give up my room i can't i can't
yeah
he says you didn't hear that what you
heard was
and uh
hashem and all the wonderful things
because
gives us so many wonderful things but
it's not enough that he gives it to us
he tells us i want you to know
i want you to know what i gave you do
you know how precious this is
it's an amazing thing you know we we get
so many good things in our lives
and
we should let people know
hashem
that's a straight story
it's an interesting story my my
brother-in-law of david lippmann
so he comes back he was in america after
he was in new york
after
the the hurricane
[Music]
hurricane sandy and you know the
electricity was out so a lot of the gas
stations weren't working those that were
were like you know
limited supplies he says so i waited
online to get gas
and slowly we're inching ahead and
inching his head and just as i pull up
to the pump
they ran out of gifts
and he looks at my kids and goes
so like that's not a siata dish my story
that's a terrible story and he says
why you think siata de shmaya is only
when it turns out good i couldn't who
had the gas run out just for me
[Laughter]
okay i have to figure out why but you
know but that wasn't by accident it
didn't run out of four cars beforehand
mom is just i pulled up
yeah
so uh
so when something happens
you say yes
amazing thing
so you say i want you to know
i want you to know
any kipper
when the
hazen says
so there's a little thing there in the
mahzarim where you can have kavana for
one of three things
either
riches
proper children
or rochester
which one should you be miscaving for
which which governor should you have
he says oh definitely for wealth
because when you're rich everybody says
you have codex and your kids are great
but penguins came home
and looked at his children he says
kendall
i want you to know
i turned down a fortune for you today
i could have asked like aspirable for
one thing i could have asked him for
wealth or that you should turn out well
i did it for you
[Music]
a beautiful idea
i did it for you
and i want you to know
yeah
i want you to know
and so
uh
when a kid of mine was starting you know
was looking to be accepted into
so the principal said i hear you travel
a lot
what if i need to get a hold of you and
you're not in the country
i said first of all as my father used to
say from your mouth to god's ears
i travel so much that you can't get a
hold of me
i said but i tell you the following
if you call up and say you need me i'll
cancel the trip and i'll come in the
next day and he says no not good i said
no no
for my kids for sure i would do that
i'm sure i would do that
i had a heart attack
i didn't know i was having a heart
attack
it was during my grandson's uh
but it was pretty bad i was pretty sure
i was dying i remember it was my
birthday
i said to my wife only taddi can die on
their birthday
and i've worked my whole life not to be
exotic i can't believe this is happening
to me turns out i was rape
but they took me away
and they did an angiogram
and they said i don't know why you're
still alive
you're not getting enough blood you
should be dead yeah
so they do uh
uh
a uh
they do a bypass operation
and uh
it was kind of rough i won't deny it i i
had a better time than most people
apparently on the ward
because i was so young it was only 55
you know a lot of these people were much
older you know
in fact my wife heard one of the people
saying no no he's not depressed
apparently after you have one of these
operations one of the side effects is
you suffer from the pressure
and
you know i wasn't depressed i was i was
annoyed
[Laughter]
anyway
so the kupah
wants you to
um
want you to uh go to a better chrome
afterwards to rest up like a recovery
place and they bring you these brochures
some of the places are gorgeous they're
on the water and they're nice and
you know but what can i tell you i'm at
a point in my life now where that's more
or less what i'm looking forward to i'm
looking to go to the retirement home you
know sit outside
you know with a blanket
this is this my mother used to say why
do you think when you get old you speak
english
because everyone i ever knew was all
spoken i don't know
my mother said i was born in america
where is this
why do you talk that way i said boss
but anyway
but uh you know i was looking for shorts
and stuff
and my wife said you know we have a
wedding coming up in a
week and a half
it might be a lot easier for the family
if you come home we'll keep it quiet and
we'll you know etc but probably better
if you recover at home
yeah
so i said but they're gonna pay for me
to go to one of these fancy places when
am i ever gonna have a chance to do that
again you know
they do this by the way when you have a
baby
baby uh women get to go to bed where
they take care of the baby and you know
so this woman you know she felt like she
couldn't go and
so she went home and then like six
months later when the kid was six months
she went
they were a little surprised because he
has all these infants of the six month
old in the
nursery mommy
but anyway so but i i told my kids i
said okay then i'll come home
my dear friend rabbi center from santa's
yeshiva it has a real name but you know
you know some people
they they're known by
who they are more than you know
so
it's known as the cover time as opposed
to michelle mayer cohen
uh simcha is usually known as
even though he's the urus american
you know so i represented to me
something you know so he called me up
and he says david where are you going to
be
i think it'll be better for the family
if i go home he says absolutely not
this is what he says to me he says i
will rent you a room in the renaissance
and i'll hire a nurse to look after you
i want you to go there and recover
i i cherish
that memory because you know only a dear
dear friend would would say something
like that
but uh but i said it would be better for
the family and so i came home it was
stupid
and i usually go crazy on tuba shot you
know tuba shroud was one of my father's
uh holidays because he had a flourish to
nursery and he was like
he he thought you know i should shut up
note you know the new year of the trees
very special occasion you know
but i always try to find as many fruit
as i can you know but obviously i
couldn't get too many because what was
being in the hospital and all and
i came home to which one we had a more
subdued little sunday you know
but i told my kids i said listen man i
turned out i better climb out of be with
you i hope you appreciate it
why because when you do something nice
for people let them know
let them know
who says listen
not doing this behind your back i want
you to know i gave you a clichemder i
want you to know vanimattan
when i was in europe david mary
garnovsky
who uh we had this close of having on
the show and admits to show we will
again
because uh
we're going to tell you with the the
present setup and everything it's hard
for me to have guests on the show until
we get back to the ravioli studios yeah
and um
but um
we used to have we used to have a
shabbaton very often it came out on
partisans by midfield
and he would always say the same rashi
all the time
it says the ayla todos uh motion of an
arrow and then the list iron's children
it says rashi
to teach you that
right if you teach your friend's child
torah it's like you're his father
and he would stop and he would look
around in the issue and he says
you're like my children
you like my children
and he really meant it
as groucho marx once said the most
important thing is sincerity once you
can fake that the rest is but he
actually had it
he really felt that way
he really cared and he wanted them to
know
and want them to know how i feel about
you
that's such an important issue
you know what bothers me i know you can
pick this up a lot of the podcast is me
basically complaining about stuff
[Laughter]
somebody said to me you know can't you
be a little more positive i said i can't
stand people like you you know like i
just you know
i don't know how to say hey you're a
muscle
anyway
um
uh
how come we only find out all these
golem stories after the person has
lifted and then afterwards you hear
about you know oh this man how great
they were why don't we hear about it
when they're alive
don't we write up stories about people
in their life
afterwards you hear okay once you know
who you missed out on or you could have
had an opportunity to have a have a
catchy would be close to it
yeah
some of them we know
yeah
my good friend rabiaco bear
yeah he's from south africa certificate
anyway
so uh he was very close to yoshi
and he used to follow him around you
know
in fact one day he walks in and he says
how'd you get in the the gate is locked
he says i climbed over and he says good
for you
anyway he sits down with rebel yoshi and
tells him all the rebel usher stories he
says these are the stories they tell and
he tells them all the rebel yoshi's
stories yeah i won't go through them now
would you notice them
i said what did he say he says he smiled
and said i see all the stories come to
you ramyakum
but gosh you know why do we when we have
to wait till afterwards to hear about it
we need to tell people and there are so
many things
how many times have you heard this where
somebody sniffed us
there's so many things i wanted to tell
the person but why didn't you
why don't you take the opportunity to
tell them now
why don't you why don't you
tell your parents how much you
appreciate them
i wish i had done that
i i have this uh
this running daydream
where i go to sleep and i wake up and
i'm five years old
i have more or less a day picked out you
know my first day of school
i started first grade when i was five i
i'm
obviously very advanced
and um
graduated high school at 16
it was only
you graduated after 11th
but uh but still i was i've always been
advanced
so uh
i never told my parents that i
appreciated the fact that they gave me
issue education
i never told it to them and and
i wish i would have come home for that
first day five years old called my dad
and said dad
thank you so much for celebrating the
issue
i never told him
my brother went to public school
i had one brother who was a genius so
they had to switch him to a private
school so my father sent them to yeshiva
and mary fidel convinced him to send the
younger boys so i started in first grade
i never knew any other school the only
school i ever went through
my father had done bankrupt
he had to rebuild he had no money he had
to go on a scholarship
i asked my mother when was it she goes
just around when you were born every
child brings their own muzzle she said
to me
but my parents had the really scrimped
safe to be able to afford to achieve
education
for the younger children
i never told my father i appreciated the
fact that he sacrificed to give me that
i speak about it after he's lifted you
know and i talk about it but
if i could go back in time
and say thanks dad
and i know my father i know when he
fully beats him he's like yeah well
anyway
he wasn't really good with that kind of
stuff
[Laughter]
that wasn't his strong point you know
it's a polish
the old time belgium you know it's like
i may have told this story you know and
the doctor was discussing the surgeon
who was going to do the surgery in my
heart surgery
so he was telling the family he says
okay tomorrow morning wednesday he'll go
in for surgery it'll be about you know
four to six hours and
and then uh he'll be unconscious until
friday so uh
you know
he'll uh
you know he'll be in the icu you won't
really be able to see him you know
you know and friday morning he should
wake up
so my wife and my children start
discussing who's going to be here who's
going to stay who's going to this i said
did you hear them
i'm going to be unconscious
i'm not going to know everyone go home
we've had a casino in a week and a half
you know we're gonna constantly take
care of everyone come back on friday you
know dab your eyes a little bit and say
oh we were outside saying to him i won't
know the difference
so the surgeon who was not a person
against
a pile of
i didn't know they still had those
and then i realized my father would have
said the same thing my grandfather would
have said the same thing you know that's
what it was like it's that polish a year
you know
publishing it is on his deathbed he says
are you here yes papa
he says uh he says uh marshall are you
here he says yes papa is
yes papa says who's watching the store
yeah
yup yup yup
somebody once saw him i was running
against his wife and shabbaton you know
and he calls up my father and says you
should have knackers your son was there
kids were singing they would be coming
from they were changing their lives it
was such an inspiring sight my father
said yeah we wanted him to go to college
you know but okay that was my dad but
you know
whatever i would tell him things
he would always be like yeah
i don't know
but he would tell anybody else you know
but we forget we forget to say
the most important people in our lives
we spend the least time for you've seen
this
you say to a mother who's more important
to you uh
somebody calls up on the phone or your
children so of course my children so the
person goes on the phone hi how are you
hold on a second hold it down
i'm serious you better be quiet
hi yeah how's everything oh really
that's it
i'm serious if i have to come down there
you're going to be sorry
why that's the way it is that's that we
take people for granted we take the more
important things are the less likely we
are to pay attention to them that's just
a reality
the most important things in our lives
we take for granted the
unusual those are the things that get
the most attention
so
happy birthday
yehuda
and uh those of you who
would like to send in a little video
message
to our shared online community i would
love to see it and in the meantime
go tell somebody
how special they are to you
go tell somebody something nice that you
did for them don't keep it to yourself
tell them love
say i'm proud of you son
yeah sweetheart i'm so proud of you
that's for your daughter if you're
saying that to your son okay
[Music]
uh
tell your parents if you're lucky enough
to still have parents you know
i don't have any parents
yeah
uh if you have any parents call them up
i want to appreciate how much you've
done for me tell your spouse
that's so nice all the things you do for
me
yeah
um
i heard david kaplan speaking once
before uh
yum the royal
and he mentioned you know people forget
that you know that a wife has to also
ask her husband for makila you know we
know he has gone too far
[Music]
so this is to a woman's group says well
does a husband have to ask his wife from
achilles he says no
he is the big
[Laughter]
we take people for granted they're the
most important people in our lives
so let's grasp this opportunity while we
haven't and tell people how much they
mean to us
well that's it for this show
