since I had three episodes of singing in
a row I thought another one might just
be pushing it so uh those of you who

any event I want to finish up the shabus
series and uh I got a lot of response
from all of the singing obviously me and
Arie goldwag U that became a two Potter
and my nephew Ezra and some of the S
mirrors so I got a lot of I don't have
them all here but I want to read you uh
an excerpt of uh some of the comments I
received and and um uh some real
fascinating insights and I want to share
this as we come to the end of this
shabas series and like I say it's not
everything but it's a few that I took
out at random thank you for your great
podcast I've been listening to ever

realized that either no one did or you
haven't read the responses yet I I read
the responses I don't always respond but
I always read just in case I'm the only

believe it went viral a few years ago

so no one sang it does seem that there

regarding the sources and composes of
some of Theos you were singing first the
classic uh which we always sang
in right this is uh this is
a connection here for you is a Ben
shenka composition from his Joy of
Sabbath album that album also has his a
and Mis as well as a sh that AB
Rottenberg sang as a cover on B menovsky
AKA
album many of the classics including Ben
Ing and kidish are probably from unknown
composers what were popularized in the
1950s on a series of Records produced by
the Wu Educational Department and Tor
masar most of those were put together by
silmore Seymour sment longtime Hank
music teacher I had him in fact yeah and
U we we sang a lot of different songs in
fact I don't know if you know there's an
English version to the famous tubish
song that we sang when I was in Hank
with ktis silam mitz the almond tree is
growing the Golden Sun is glowing the
Birds cry out in joyous Glee from every
roof and every tree Tu bishvat is here
the Jewish Arbor Day tubish vad is here

torton Hank 6 grade rby and
grandchildren Mikey Davis went to Hank
also had a slw of albums of the of all
theas the retical sumary of America also
known
as had a fundraising album in
1949 released many times over and up to
1960 in which some popular Ziro
songs
um uh were released I once spoke with
morai he schita who was in the Yeshiva
back then and he said said many of those
Tunes were brought over from BM that
were refugees from
Europe the album was produced by Rabbi
Abraham cron father of rabie pesak cron
who was executive director of the
Yeshiva back then I enjoyed the episode
immensely and I can't wait for the next

actually did have preparation for was

yet but trust me um I was listening to
the last podcast with Ari goldwag and
while it was entertaining and beautiful
I could not help but be surprised at the
lack of presented that's because me and
Ari are not we went to
Han in fact AR's Dad if you've ever been
up in the mountains there's this store
in South fosburg uh Murray socks that's
his dad so uh you
know
anyway um Tunes I was sure were velt
nunim I guess I am more closed-minded
than I thought uh no I listen
or or any other who would like to come
on the podcast and
sing we're happy to have you
yeah I'm reminded of a tune for the r
had mentioned in a recent podcast
something about a writer from the five
towns for a magazine I recall the r
saying then that he does not who the
composer is and I am delighted to share
that this is my grandfather R mha
Goldman's tune it was presented to
his kala as a gift and was published
years later as one of the many releases
in the camp shalva
series people who look out eagerly every
summer for the latest release and his
songs were the go-to in Jewish music in
circles some like his
Baron became literal Nim the proof is
that it reached even lisher shabas
tables he's composed tunes on Su Shalo
and
curon the tunes translate the words in
an uncanny way and reflect his Shish Han
and intense love for chabas he gave a
lot more to the community than just his
music people knew he was always
available with a listening ear and Sound
Advice sadly he passed on at a young age

one area where kids have little interest
they like songs of famous singers a few

since it doesn't have say so you can
sing it at any

never learned through zirus and now
every shabas when I see the zirus I get
a deeper appreciation based on the
research that I did so I hope that

I remember I I uh I got a letter with
somebody said that you know my son
listens we play it in the car and he
thinks you're Uncle Mishi so all I can
say is hey D D Dum which to me is one of
the funniest lines ever it was in the
second Uncle Mishi uh album they go are
you Uncle Mishi who teaches Jewish
children all about Tor msos goes that's
right well hey dumb Diddy
dumb I've just adopted that as one of my
by lines in
life that have deep meaning to be but in
any event um so uh so we come to the end
of chabas and like I say we finished
with
chalis but part of uh part of chabas is
Mala
Mala it is brought down in the gamarra
the same gar we brought down about shis
also talks about Mal Mala and the idea
of making a suda after shabas to
uh the now let's understand what's going
on over here the M
Mala
um
obviously if you have a friend
you uh when it's time for them to go you
don't just wave from the couch okay
bye right you walked them out depending
how good the friend
is I remember when I was going to Israel
one of the first times my parents came
with me to the
airport and as I was walking towards the
gate my parents were there like waving
and as I'm going down I keep turning
around and there's still
there made a deep impression on me that
uh there was saying sometimes people
don't want to let somebody go and they
they hold on to it

exceptional uh individual he's not just
a tremendous speaker you know uh but uh
as a person he's just an exceptional
person it's it's Kad to to listen to him
talk about his own life but uh but at
some point listen to this story because

levels um his father was listening to a
recording I don't think they had
cassettes back then it must have been
real to real um of uh of
shadon and he says to his family the
next time he comes to America he's
staying with
us okay anyway
um they heard he was coming into America
he took his bed and carried it up to the
attic he set up the room he dressed all
his children in big day shabas and they
went down to the docks to welcome him
shadan did not fly he took a boat and
came in they were all waiting there to
welcome him now the boat was
delayed because there had been storms
whatever the case was so it came in days
later than it was supposed to anyway the
representative of of the aoda were there
to welcome him and they said listen we
had a place arranged for you but it fell
through because uh you know the r was
late but we're going to find another
place and re cron steps phot and says no
no no he's staying with
us they said what what what you know and
um uh so everyone's like who is it this
guy so someone says I know who he is you

here till we find a more suitable place
anyway he stayed there for months stay

to Israel to meet the boat when it came

his father waiting for him so that not
to let it go so uh so of course he
became he became part and parts of the
family and so when pes's father died
young he was there so to speak to to
fill that void in the family but imagine
I I so don't want to say goodbye I fly
all the way to ell to say goodbye
again that's one of the many many uh
mind-blowing PES cron stories about PES
cron you know when he tells stories
about other people but I I find his life
just absolutely fascinating
anyway um so uh uh that's the idea now

the power of shabas continues into the
week when you are Mala Mala we are
taking the power of shabas and keeping
it with us and we are continuing
that Kad of chabas and bringing it into
our
lives
um B has a beautiful idea where he talks

came out safely from the

opportunity where we're able to turn
around and say okay we've had this
unbelievable

town if you um got tired of living you

die but if you stayed in this town you

interesting that there's a story with

um uh there's this
connection that comes when you malava

of this world you're

into this world and to be alive and to
be in the physical and the spiritual
that's
shabas that's where the
physicality becomes
spiritual so that there's no physical
Pleasures on chabas per se like I say
it's
not
right no the physical Pleasures are
themselves Rani they're spiritual they
take you to a new
place and that's what gives you the
power to come back and amazing because
if you have shabas then you're
already and if you just have shabas and
it's over and you close the door it
doesn't carry over into your life but
Mala Mala brings it over to
you now like old things you have to plan
ahead so you know that if you're going
to stuff yourself over shabas to the
point that I can't eat anything from
love Mala you can't eat if it's aasa
it's not it's not eating if you're so
sick that you can't eat uh it's
easier in the winter time when shabas
comes out early then shalis is more of a
challenge
um whereas for in the summer time Mal
Mala is tough so you have to plan ahead
to make sure you leave yourself enough
room that you can eat Mal Mala okay so
uh if you get by with with a with a
kazas but there are people who m
make they make a whole
sud like I say there people like Candles
there are people who um are are creating
this continuation of shabas so that
shabas is M into our lives I mentioned
this at one point in one of the earlier
episodes when we count to
yil seven years so we don't count 7 time

seven uh years but always on a higher
level

shabas our whole life is
shabas we don't have names of of the
days
right um in English there are names of
the days Sund day which of course is
named after the Sun Moon day which is
named after the moon Saturn day which is
named after
Saturn um and then the rest are named
after uh I think Norse gods Thor's day
you know stuff like that anyway um but
uh uh I think fry is supposed to be Loki
Friday anyway so um but they're named
after the north gods that we only have
one day that has a name it's called
shabas and then there's one day to
shabas two days to shabas three days to
shabas five six and then
chabas and there's Arab shabas and
there's Moi shabas and we only we only
tell time by shabas we live in
shabas and when you live in shabas
you're living in
alaba so we're either enjoying chabas
from Bel as Carri frees Us in or we're
preparing for the next chabas and
getting into the
shabas but Mala feeds that lose bone
that bone in our in our neck that's
going to guarantee that we come
back here
it's so uh like I said I didn't get to
read all the comments of which there
were many a lot of people um have have a
kuk from uh from strengthening ourselves
in chabas and like I said I started this
because the Tor who said that since this
terrible event took place on a shabas
and people were saved because they were
sh
shabas I heard a story not that long ago
where this guy broke down on the
highway you know and uh the guy pulls
over and and the guy is secular you know
and he says what's the problem he says
I've ran out of gas he says you have a
gas can goes I'll go get your gas and he
drives this is on the highway so it's
not like goes all the way down to get
the gas then he has to turn around and
come all the way back and then come back
again you know aren't that many exits
this is not the Southern State Parkway
you know what telling you can drive on
Onish for a very long time and he fills
him up he says what do I owe you he says
nothing it's my Mitzvah my pleasure
he saysi want you to see the bumper
stick I have in my car they walk around
to the back of the car and it's like
stop
the he says I want you to help me take
this off my
car and they take off the bumper sticker
they exchange it ERS and he calls them
from time to
time and uh and he says to him listen
why don't you come to me for for shamas
says I don't keep shamas I'm not going
to do that I'm not going to become
religious go I know but come I want you
to be my family let's have a nice time
bring your kids you know anyway he's
nagging him he's nagging him and he
finally agrees Sim to come so he was not
there in the in the village when the
Kamas came in and murdered everybody
because he was at this guy's
house so
shabas saved
lives I heard that the way that they
would get into the places because they
had the metal gates and the and the
fences is they'd wait till a car came
and opened the gate and then they would
shoot the guy so that his car would
block the gate and that's how they were
able to come in and uh do all the
destruction and uh there was one place
where they were thinking of keeping
shabas so that was the first shabas this
start to keep shabas and they couldn't
get
in so when we're
M um
shabas it was dying grunfeld but I'm not
sure who said more than the Jews have
kept the shabas the chabas have kept the
Jews it's a it's a the most powerful
thing says
the and I may have told this in an
earlier podcast you'll forgive me just
uh you know you get old you get old you
don't remember everything but uh says
you come to a store the store is
closed say okay you know maybe had to go
to the
doctor a week it's
closed NE maybe he's sitting sh two
weeks it's
closed maybe he's on
vacation a month is closed says well
maybe they're doing renovations they're
fixing
up but when they take down the sign you
know they're out of
business shabas is called an O It's The
Sign between us
and when you take down the sign then you
know you had a business and as long as
we have shabas then we know that we have
that connection
to and the more
we
shabus shabus is not just that we keep
shabas but shabas keeps us and so all of
us should be ourselves in our shabas
and we will uh go on to survive this
terrible time
and to see yhia the end of Goog and to
be able to go in to
the that we're promised
