hi this is Deborah Lasky and welcome to
the river a LOF ski show and this is the
last episode in the wrapper Olaf Ski
Pesach program as you can see it's
already pasted ik the sign unfortunately
we used it before pay sucks so it's
comets matzah so we had to cover it over
with plastic and I have my official
rabbi Olaf ski show mug which is already
now for Pesach hmm there's a little bit
of a tinny taste to it but that's fine
yeah you know what the cup said drat
soiled again anyway
so good my dear good night to everybody
here and this is calm OE and it's so
nice to be spending colloid with you and
as I've mentioned many times in a
blatant attempt at self-promotion
perhaps next year we will have the
actual Ruby allows keep a sex program
and we can all spend pace F together and
with a little bit of luck we'll actually
be in the basis of Mick - and then you
can see me wearing might be God them I
will be doing carbon ice assuming I
don't pass out I might I spoke to some
of the base of minish I might be in
public relations
but however that's kind of work it's a
sham next Pesach we should be together
in one way or another
next Pesach we will be together because
Hanoi there's always special Hanoi
concerts and activities and things and
it's a special time for family and you
know we've had a lot of requests since
our Purim show I've gotten many many
well I've got it there was one email
that actually my wife said wouldn't it
be
wouldn't it be nice to bring back Yaakov
and so since this is our special
homemade program I have my special guest
Yaakov Arlovski and so I am honored to
have Rabbi Yaakov wallowski with us
again only you know this is like the
firm's and a half ago so so the last
time you were there ever Alaska and I
was the guest and now I'm the rebel
husky and you're the guest in fact I'm
not only the guest would be nice because
you know a fella might is uh is such a
you know family time and since you're
like family to me and you always have
been
Yago in fact grew up and he he had eight
sisters later he got two brothers when
he was sixteen years old again another
brother so he'd have someone to play
with and but picked him up in the
playground he looks nicely going so
sometimes you know I just say you know
what keep the fire but the the fact is
that I thought it would be nice to talk
about colloid for all the people out
there you know they didn't have the
benefit of growing up in my house and
you know there was some fond colormode
memories in between the beatings anyway
yes what do you call annoyed memories oh
wow Oh father another child now I am no
I am I will tell you if you're if you're
mentioning that part already is that
it's it's amazing to me how much you
were able to do back then because I have
one child now is just about four and we
when I was growing up you had kids
sometimes it went from high older
teenagers younger teenagers young kids
older
and you have to find ya 11 kids and you
have to find something that everybody
will be happy with together Wow you know
what I mean I have the one kid and so I
I think that was that was amazing how
were you were able to find different
different stuff to do every year and a
pairs podcast when I was talking about
the Seder I said that's the challenge of
the Seder is you I had a sailor with
people in all different age groups you
have to find a way of making the story
relevant to all different ages but it's
the same thing with you know with a
family trip that you have to soak myself
knocks over the pillow you have to
really think about it I have to tell you
that from my experience I think food was
always something there buddy together
yes who works for all ages at all
besides it so I kept the Jewish people
alive for thousands of years in poor
health did you get a man and there was
this professor from Harvard who was
there and I must have been talking about
my theater this is recently on a podcast
but you know and he starts going into a
whole thing about how Jewish food is so
unhealthy terrible it is it cetera you
know and you know we would just looking
forward to lunch by that boy yeah so
what all right so let's talk about the
food because my audience loves food in
fact somebody just asked me realizing
you always tell the cupcake story what's
the recipe for the cupcakes this is not
a cooking show okay I'm not going Ramsey
and I'm not who's the other Bobby Flay
yeah no the one with there with mixed
other videos Oh Elton Brown Brown yeah
my Alton Brown yeah I just shared some
of my mother's recipes to try to prove a
point now people are writing in how do
you make cupcakes is a limit yeah and
although we do have we make wonderful
Pesach cakes here through the miracle of
potato starch and and you can make with
matzo you can make muffins you know and
you can take them out of the oven put
them down put the butter on them they
tend to be a little thick
especially since I used kabura smaller
matzo meal and
way that lasts a long time a little bit
goes a long way but yeah so what are you
thinking of well I'll tell you I yeah to
me really I think it splits into two
there was the a lot of the years that we
went away you know you being a famous
world speaker and we went yeah we
traveled often you know throughout my
childhood I'm interrupting I don't know
if you guys what what how did it affect
you the fact that I was so famous like
the people do guy hug you risky son
announced like that but what did most
people have no idea why I always there's
always there's no people I am so I'll
tell you in uh I really worked at my
benefit almost like when I had cancer
and because there's no there's nothing
in the world to really open doors and
get your way by coming in and saying I'm
sorry I have cancer and then you're
right away the first time line yeah
they'll let you in where you get you get
free things as that's just the nature of
things so some of these people died from
it so you know it's terrible handicapped
kid you know and they put this people
circle around looking for a parking spot
this guy pulls up on a handicap spot
takes out his handicapped kid somebody
says some people have all the luck
yeah so so that was at least second to
that I using your name to open doors get
get places so very rarely do I speak to
any English speaker ever I'm talking a
person who speaks English not a speaker
who was an English speaker and very
rarely do they not know that I'd right
away just say allows you like oh yeah
the famous right so good warez minute
they said oh you related to the finish
over last year I say nowhere laughs kids
are very common
I've heard about this guy now this is
true this true I meet somebody wants it
he goes this is my is my brother Muncie
and he says oh this is my brother you
know Deborah Orlowski goes the speaker
says yeah the funny one says yeah in
Yiddish I said no he says you move is a
funny rabbi Orlovsky Guerra cousin who's
bigs in Yiddish so I realized that
Deborah Orlowski is like pyroar avi Mela
fits its again it's a title you know and
in every language is a governor laughs
Kingdom you know you could have fooled
me with you - I have to say there was
this one we get we can't hit the London
just being you
we stopped there for two days you and
some speaking sufferer was on the way to
America and they sent this guy to pick
us up and he picks us up we're driving
in a car and since we're walking listos
big-endian you dish literally the whole
time I was like 40 minutes ago he's
dropped us off and the whole time and
you're like yo yo yo and when we came
out of the car and I whispered to and I
said I don't use big Yiddish and you
said I don't so I think we both don't
know what he said till this day so yeah
so so we went away we go so we went away
a lot we went away to hotels in a minute
away well look there's there's the the
prepay sock cleaning preparing cooking
serving cleaning after the meals and
that's that's that's rough you know so
being being here the way the way we grew
up is because being the only boy out of
8 girls when I was growing up I had my
only room so when it comes Pesach time
everyone has to clean up their room so
most of the rooms at 2:00 or 3:00 where
you could all clean up together I had to
clean up my room on my own but there's
also
I'm not saying in a bad way I was very
neat and it I usually finished first but
the the there was I think the very
strong bonding part about the clean pays
out in our family where eventually
everyone had to just kind of you know
meet up from all the bedrooms and used
to meet up in the living room dining
room kitchen and there's always like a
loud blast music and there's sprays all
over the place and and shibata's and and
and who knows what and there's always
ordering food out of the house and we
have the lobby right outside the house
and just eating it was just like a
non-stop going in a lot of people here
and you always had students would come
and help and neighbors that would just
drop by for the fun so there there's
there's definitely a lot of fun of
having peace out in the house but again
not after cleaning and fine stain and
nice hotels indications a nothing wrong
with that you know like that kind of
thing yeah it was missiles nephesh you
know to go away for pizza I had six
offers this year Wow
I told them I only go with the entire
family it's nine limbs and some people
say it's not that you're not worth it
but you know it's not budgets I do we
said are you out of your mom so I mean
the other people also felt that way but
they have a little class you should I
took it and leave my butt so then when
we stay home so what was called my like
yeah so alright also you know like you
kind of kind of differentiate in between
the times where we went out and the
times where this I think a lot of people
could relate to is that you kind of wake
up a little later especially with all
the girls this vacation and then you sit
around then it's after the breakfast
with the matzo brei recipe that's an art
form podcast sometimes you would make
french toast which you think the matzo
just went a little bit put it in the
better and then fried you could even
then head in a layer of like jelly or
something and put another one and fry it
you're gonna break up some cereal and
like schnitzel wouldn't fry like that
alright this is not this is not a cookie
jar like we said yeah and so and then
comes a time where we basically sit all
around and we say what are we gonna do
today
then each one brings up one idea and
another one basically then it's
lunchtime and more the peasant is my big
barbecue for supper and those days are
amazing I have to say we love those days
but some of the children never get out
of their pajamas all day they're just
waiting for a reason to get dressed and
that reason never comes people say you
know like a two meals a day three days a
day and now else we have one meal it
starts when you wake up sometimes
there's a break - it seems like
inflation agiels oh we had that one year
in one of the hotels yeah that we can
right yeah the key nargis yeah we didn't
have to worry you go outside I have a
special comment section up and that's it
then just burn urban right every night
hey so I've been dealing with any
particular trips that were you went off
that's got a day trip thing we did we
did we do know a lot of a lot of these
trips they were there were more local
trips that we used to do a lot of the
column or trips that you arranged for us
you and mommy of course with trips that
we did together with with other families
from the neighborhood or from around
there were friends that a lot of them
had kids similar ages and stuff yeah
there was one year in particular that I
remember that we rented a bus with the
three other families and we went all
around we went to the set and did on the
sand dunes and we have famous pictures
of all the rabbis slide the sand dunes
we used to go plenty of times so the big
parks we went to gonna you show those
who know the parks here in Israel always
like barbecues and kids were playing
with the balls or you know frisbees and
stuff like that it was it's very hard on
a big family like this to get a time
where you have everybody together you
know people with different schedules
different ages and when you have a time
like this
everybody's just sitting together out of
the house you're just you know chilling
together a plane and just enjoying the
time I just have the fondest of memories
from those times those though the trips
were amazing I I want to throw out for
my audience it's really it's kind of
late now because it's sort of calm like
I may have mentioned this in earlier
podcast but you have to plan colloid
otherwise every day will be like that
magic day that Yakov describes but you
get up late and you you make eggs and
matzo brei in the French toast you know
and you know then you sit around and you
wait till everybody comes and you talk a
little bit then it's time for lunch and
then you make the matzo pizzas lasagnas
I know that kind of stuff this is and
again for people who who don't eat the
process I don't I don't know what you do
I really have no idea but for people
with your breath you know there is no
physical limit to how much Madson cream
cheese you can run gg's then your mice
and butter your mutts and jelly and then
you start combining you realize what's
happened you know what cell is carrying
you away i I have to tell you that that
the the greatest memories I think we all
had as the kids was the way you always
used to pack up the lunches that when we
went on these trips because we always
used to make the matzo lasagnas and like
you're saying and bring all the spreads
and mommy would bring just the the the
the enormous amounts of junk food
whatever you could have potato chips and
mounds and mounds of chocolate I don't
know why based on Decatur was mostly
fruits and vegetables
my son remembers it differently
little pieces of chocolate to give each
child you know but for the most part it
was mostly carrot sticks and cucumber
spirits in fact you remember that time
we used rock chocolate chips and each
one got one forget that was great and
this is always a struggle you gotta find
a place where you could pack you know
Park the whole group in it so it's
always over 20 30 people and you gotta
find a place and thence try to strap the
plastic together then no is wins ever
the year the barbecue oh well which one
and the bonfire oh that was fun but they
don't remember I say well I say who came
with us or is that uh we had the Shapiro
said okay now sight editing you now all
these years you might have some a
massage yeah cope with my shaman for
many years speaker would be there he
would run block for me and he would make
all the points that I didn't want to
particularly say and he knew knew
exactly what to do or not handle let me
just tell you if you can't get through
to him you call me over there I think
that what was good about about that
specific barbecue is that we found a big
part that had everything in it including
a big place to have a barbecue with
tables and everything and there was the
courts to play ball and there was big
grass places and there was little parks
for the kids and it was it was just a
fun time when you have that many ages
together and we all sat there and
everyone brought guitars including
myself back then you know like every
shave bar you gotta know at least to
carve on songs and yeah what a fake
someone get to our stuff but it was it
was very nice we had a you know the
famous Shapiro singer his uncle is also
famous cousin and he was with us and
they were singing it was just comes it's
into the night and it was just uh it was
just beautiful and we drove home then
and right away I think we
because he goes along free from their
long journey right but uh what why do
you think that is that the piece on
begin the chocolate uh holiday it's like
you never see people buy these amount of
chocolates ever I'm like they do they
don't pay something people just you know
what do you go shopping for paisa and
psychologically you think that there's
no food and so whatever's there you buy
but now in America there's much larger
thing to buy here we have less of a less
of a variety so for those of you who
don't live in a it's show in America
more or less every hash cuff is reliable
there's a few of them that we know we're
not reliable for the most part all day
much girl preserve HST to hear whatever
you eat there will be somebody who will
tell you it is closet rate and my mr.
Casas trade this there's nothing that
everybody agrees on yeah but there are a
few of them that are like a little
sketchy and it kind of started for
Pesach and you know if you were sticking
to like but that's and Reubens or
whatever it is you know you you there's
nothing this potato chips in the
struggle yeah so why they brought in
from America ones I think a lollipop
yeah with a fancy hush California or
something else and it's a big problem in
Russia lion because there's a min aghh
not the cotton seed oil which friend of
mine was making a person hotel and he
asked which level Salman if he could use
a particular hash gopher because they
might have can seed oil which little
Salman said to him so what so he says
what's a MIG you wish but the figures
you like that D cat's eye which long
said it's not seem to know about that
even though his family was you shall me
for generations but but they that that's
how it works so so ever a lot of the
stuff comes from America its cottonseed
oil in it so you know rely on that then
you know you left with those little bags
of potato chips I think they have apple
rings you know
apple rings mm-hmm and does bars of
chocolate that's why that's what you
remember because you know otherwise via
for the sparse party viewers would kid
knows they have they have it all yeah I
mean they make bum bum miss Lee and I
said to elbows I mean I said to his
Friday's fella once I said well you know
you guys get kidney is on pace up you
know there's so much stuff you can eat
me says don't be jealous because of that
we have to say Snickers everything's a
trade-off as my father used to say so
what do you think about these Hollywood
concerts hey you got well I'll tell you
to be honest for some reason the way
well the way it was when I was younger
the main concerts were always took his
time for some reason Pesach was always
more of like trip times and and so kiss
was more conscious not because they
weren't concerts there Dewar but that's
just the way the way we did I knew
merica we when we went to ybc concert
one time with the cover and Ella grace
there are all the way back then we had a
cousin of ours that his brother was in
it then so I was in America at the time
and we went there and that was that was
fun hotel where I'm from free pay the
concert you were up on stage well yeah I
did a picture with you okay fine you
don't need you wanna you wanna remember
why no tell you who the exclamation mark
was doing your concerts right that's
right who's giving out balloons and
sweets this is out throughout the whole
time that's fun and there was one of the
hotels where we went to Lipa Schmelzer
concert that was also graden and that we
got big oh yeah double yeah Bay who in
fact made me a special birthday message
maybe we'll take a quick look at the
double got a message happy birthday
ribbed of it what can I say it's a big
one the big 7 oh just kidding she
Shimla's Akana as the Mishna says
recognize a beautiful beautiful thing
you've had white hair and your beard for
quite a while but I mean I saw it
already pasted off you know a bunch of
years ago but um
you'll never be an old man that's the
truth
you're always young at heart and you
speak beautifully and you should
continue your amazing work inspiring
people all over the globe making us
laugh making us cry and just to use your
god-given talents to inspire people
continue what you're doing
for many many many many more years
you're only halfway there so you know
we're looking forward to to seeing you
for many more years with happy and
healthy years mid-session knock us from
the kids
Shalom by is hats luck on your hello
with your children with your tell me
them and wishing you to go mahai ll hi
oh and happy birthday you remember that
oh god baby oh of course
it's horse of course he was great he was
great a very very nice guy oh so yeah
yes very nice that was so I guess I
guess I take it back I guess I did do my
guns with America I think in America yes
yes I think when we weren't a hotelier
they brought Hakeem something and they
so this is really where it's either a
very good to pay with that tacky I don't
know how I'm sure my life would day I'm
gonna do it unless it was just that long
ago that they were in at the time I I
don't know I I don't I can't remember
America they got a great adventures we
did we did go yes we went to great
adventures was always raining
he's always raining cold well we went to
Orlando one year you took us all to
Orlando with grandma's last year we had
a great time yet no I
I ran black I took care of everything
but first of all the air conditioner
wasn't working in our house it was like
a 90 degrees in there you know and no it
was terrible
but but everybody went to the park 70
parks and nowadays we did all the parts
swimming whatever they wanted and do
that also for the kids it was great that
was and there was a little pond there so
I went to tackle some things and one of
my sudden was was actually going to
title their face that and then of the
president alligator so in retrospect it
was a good thing that he was not title
there and we they called the police and
the police said he's he's a small
alligator so we really can't it was
water but it was still scary and then he
said the police said you well you were
there well I was there yeah it was it
was actually on Yom Tov Cheney and he
came out and I called the nine one one
at a time because being an idiot from
Israel you see you know the kids are
throwing ice cubes at him he's catching
them it was terrifying to me so the
first guy who came he said oh there's
nothing we could do this they live here
and you know I mean I'll just go back in
the water but when in fact he didn't
hours later another cop came he was a
more serious guy and he told us go go
away and he's like they could like jump
40 miles an hour or something he was
like he'll eat all of you
bunch of little kids and they then they
ran away and then they brought him put
him in they put this spray around those
terrifying those I love Florida but most
of the time they don't get you because
they're dying from the Zika mosquitoes
I'm kidding by the way I don't want any
angry emails from Florida everybody
should have a wonderful time and you
went back there oh yeah we went back and
we had a great time in like we have a
great time with you also but I think I
think with you as it all fell on you and
you were doing also the cooking and the
cleaning and the hosting and you I said
I said I'm going to spend pesos with my
mother right and I want everyone to have
a good time but we did it I was Michael
yes
the next year we went back and we looked
a little bit better how to do it and I
went with some friends and I was us
always terrific
the one thing I'll tell you because we
you took us to parks also throughout the
years not on colloid and and and the one
thing about on Pesach has not been able
to buy anything literally except water
and that that's a little hard you got to
pack up everything but they don't really
let you bring it in believe that side
come woke up my two miles in the cold
anymore the lines are just you know
forever and uh that's that's that's the
one thing you know when you go to the
regular part you just want to buy
yourself an ice cream or some chocolates
or you know in the whole box of
chocolates whatever it is you know and
all these stores that sell all the the
the candy and the cookies and you know I
mean Disneyworld or all these places and
the old kosher but yeah it's paisa you
know what are you do so yeah yeah and
you have a crime we have to pay so also
because this is land is owned by the
Jews really everything's on better Jews
we control the bags of the media I'm
kidding there's no I'm just kidding
although we do control American policy
Elana Meyers good Benjamins baby
how do you make all my meaningful like
fun and meaningful or like religious
meaningful I'm thinking religious
meaningful ah yeah this is one of the
things if we ever make the raviolo ski
pays out the program with the Alaska
family because I said this on a previous
podcast that our whole family is like
incredibly tongue yes yes we could
really provide the entire staffing the
whole thing yeah for sure so but the
problem is this is this is serious there
I'm not saying this as a joke you know
right yeah cuz of them maybe they don't
know cuz we were joking before yeah I
don't even know if anybody's watching
this way to Nikola hello
I know my wife is right at least you
tell me she did I don't know she really
did what I this is my grandson's support
animal takes on the plane with him
anyway so know there's a lot of things
is that there are people who go away for
Pesach and it's basically a vacation
that happens to be on pacer right so
it's not that kala mode is your feeling
that this is a young tip it's a holeshot
mode but it's bigger mo a you feel like
it's like vacation time yeah it was uh
an ad years ago for a hotel in Orlando's
ears but I don't know I haven't seen
this since but you know basically it's
they were selling Disneyland and Disney
World and you know you have a hotel and
it's just you know it's Mickey Mouse
friends to Seder you goofy that's the
four questions you know you know it's a
it's a vacation it's a vacation but it's
not a it's that a medical muy well
there's no question that the years we
stayed home I'm saying if you're talking
about the feeling of Pesach yeah there's
no question that the years we stay at
home you know you feel paisa especially
I don't know how much you spoke about
the way you used to clean at least when
we were young
today a little older but back then when
you were younger and you had the
strength we clean I mean we clean like
nobody cleans and everything was covered
I mean India so my kids get married do
they go to other families and they're
just horrified like how can you eat in
this habit I was gonna market a
self-cleaning house we eat just like you
the big metal door you closed it fry
everything they might vacuum it buy new
stuff and for some reason we always used
to do it because comments it was like
five o'clock in the morning yeah I've
gotten it better
I'll get it better yeah these years yeah
but it used to be just endless what did
you do I think it's from is the right
way it's only so much checking you could
do is the hot wax is crawling under the
bed you know and the bottom of would
catch on fire I had to tell you that
there was this thing you did I don't
know if you did it consciously or not
but it's like that now I do when I do
the because comets they used to give you
the feather and the thing and the candle
and used to walk around and and you know
everything's clean or you know at least
we cleaned the whole house and you know
they're hiding the ten pieces of bread
you know and usually they write it down
so that we don't buy actually lose one
and forget it places there are horror
stories you told me throughout the years
but wait a day this person did not write
it down and it's and they the guy found
nine pieces and he couldn't find the
tenth piece ain't no way he checked
everywhere they sit down to the Seder
and the air conditioner goes up so
here's a good idea to write it down
in fact it was this terrible story last
year I just bitterly were nervous about
gross
but that was serving this woman calls
the ROVs and says listen my husband did
the dicus comments and he only found
nine pieces of bread he says he has said
here's the kid looking yeah she calls
back it's 12 o'clock at night she says
12 o'clock at night he still can't find
it I guess you can't you can't just
though you have to he has to find it you
know so she calls back it's 3 o'clock in
the morning she says I can't they have
to make this say that tomorrow I got my
strength can I give my hand anyway so so
we know it's there you know it's there
we know more or less where it is we're
gonna hide it hard and every time you go
around looking at the thing and when you
cut something you would say uh-huh
things you put it in it was like oh my
god I found the treasure it's right here
you know I ain't gonna gamble for that
uh-huh but from now I go around and my
wife literally it's sitting there right
there it's like she puts a special yo
Hammad's table with him all the pieces
don't even look just take them off oh I
forgot about the treasure hunt speaking
of which because there was years you
used to do for us a treasure hunt and
those those were amazing because the
clues were impossible they were terrible
you used to use different systems of
good mattress katanas worship tables and
you couldn't know if it's in English or
in Hebrew and sometimes it was only a
word and you know we could have bought
but but those those those were good and
then used to take us out to eat after
Faison it was always supposed to be the
winning team or whatever but then we all
in our family we all winners
so they really I think that me and I
think I speak on behalf of all of us it
was just the the the fondest of memories
it was just and I'm sure you put a lot
of work into it cuz even now when I do
with my family there's a lot of the you
know just the thought process going into
it and just
executing it well one well you know it's
if you take the time and you really
think it through
figure out how to make something
meaningful and you can really add to the
colloid so those of you who are watching
this I hope now you're inspired to also
eat a lot and sit at home and decide
what should we try to do today and then
eat some more and a lot of do we just
the right amount I think that's more or
less the takeaway from this show I want
