hi this is D olowski and welcome to the
rabbi olowski
show and whether you're watching with
our friends over at toy time whoever you
watch or listen to your podcast as
always it's exciting to have you along
for the
experience and you know we're in the
middle of doing our shabas series of
course a number of the G Torah told us
that shabas is a shmir Shir shabas
shabas protects us
I think it was sh who said more than the
Jews have kept the chabas the shabas
have kept the Jews and um uh
we um we
are uh going through different aspects
of chabas so I did the right now I want
to do the
zirus I did the Friday night zirus and
uh I got some feedback that it was kind
of technical
you know it's not like you went into it
but Ian you went through it pretty uh
quickly you gave a little bit of
explanation which is what I try to do
try to make it meaningful if you want to
go into it in Bean I'm not averse to
that I have a Shear that I give on
Sunday night um here in ell which is I
guess Sunday afternoon in America Sunday
morning in Los Angeles maybe Monday in
Australia I don't know but uh uh but the
point is that uh you know I can spend um
many many hours on one BR
of and developing different uh concepts
of it so like we're we're we just
finished out
sikim and uh you know we had a whole
class on the difference between sadik
and and um and we had a whole class on
Gat sedc and so I I could go into this
in a lot of depth what I want to do is
try to inspire people to say Theus and
hopefully make them a little bit more
accessible to people so is it going to
be a little technical it's a little
technical suck it up you know what I
mean sometimes you can actually learn
something here on the rabbi lowski show
it's
okay know we have that too we try to
have things for
everybody so every now and then I say
some kind of brilliant Insight that is
my
complete own idea that has no basis for
anybody or anything and sometimes
borders on kir and I'll say that and
sometimes I'll say over Schoen that I've
heard from great people and sometimes I
will give recipes but right now I'm
doing this
mirus so live with it and we have a
sponsor for our zirus part two sponsored
anonymously in honor of my parents 41st
anniversary I got to tell you there was
a time when that sounded very very old
to
me but as I approached my 42nd
anniversary I have to
say now full disclosure right and I'm
I'm not uh I I wear my heart on my
sleeve everybody knows everything about
me you know so uh I'm I'm turning 65 on
giml
shvat and uh
every now and then I turn to my wife and
I say we're in our
60s which is something I I just can't
even wrap my head around from my mind
I'm still a young couple I I feel this
way because I've avoid maturing over
these years but you know but I remember
when I was younger and I would look in
the paper and I'd hear about a
40-year-old man and I'd think to myself
wow that's so old and now I'm almost 65
and I read in the paper about a
40-year-old man and I say wow that's so
old 41 years can I know her you know the
great thing about having a 45th
anniversary is you're already looking
towards your
50th and uh I don't know what you do on
the 50th Anniversary you know almost
anything you do will be anticlimactic is
it's such a big accomplishment you
married for 50 years yeah um you know
25th
anniversary which I I had already yeah
it's kind of hard to get to 42 without
passing 25 you know and that's always a
pretty big one but 50th Ann AR you know
remember one year someone sent me this
uh this online birthday card with a
little song on it you know I don't
remember all the words to it but I just
thought you
know uh Happy Birthday what have you
done that matters happy birthday each
year you're getting fatter happy
birthday you have not accomplished much
but at least you you didn't die this
year I guess that's good
enough so that's it you just have to
stick it out you know anyway thank you
for all you have done and continue to do
for me always and being true role models
for me in all areas of life I hope I can
continue giving youas
and and thank you RAB olowski for giving
us another thing to bond over wow we a
pleasure and uh uh we should go on and
uh all of us CL so boy do we need them
and tough times tough times so uh during
these tough times we're focusing on
shabas okay we did in the last episod
the Friday night mirus and now I'm going
to do the shabas day mirus and as always
I'm only doing the ones that I sang in
Yeshiva the the ones that we we didn't
do I I I can't really tell you because
we didn't do them so uh
um whether selective or
not we start with KES kadaba we had that
in mentioned k k is
thees that you make in the morning
that's the Mitzvah
of you get with the Kish at night that
is the night Kish is
mitv the day is mitv called K and in
fact the gar makes clear you could just
make a bar
piffin some people add in the POS and
some people of course add in all the
little paragraphs that are with it um
but if you're ever stuck and you don't
have a sitter or a bener just make a b
pin you can't go wrong K all right and
then there mirus and I'm using them for
my bener in order of appearance and
again the ones that we did so uh y y we
didn't do so I can't tell
you you know next episode of mem we will
do uh Tunes because I'm not doing the
tunes now I'll get somebody who's better
at that than I am but uh B Elon is very
long and every tune is a challenge
because of that and I sometimes mix it
up and do each stanza to a different
tune just because it's so long but we'll
go through it now it was written by bar
how do I know because the first four
letters of the first four SP standard
spells spells out bar and the next three
spell right
okay blessed is the highest God who gave
us rest yeah is is a emotional spiritual
rest redeem our
soul from all the suffering and
[Music]
groaning and he will seek out uh your
city of Y that has been pushed
away and will take away uh all of the
groans and the sadness of your
people uh if you keep
shabas that's obviously based on
the
right you your son and your daughter so
I I
believe that instead of just saying you
know men and women Ben ubas is because
there is an aspect uh in Baron of the
family and giving over to the children
with this
zmer um if you keep
shabas I always thought it's interesting
there are different types ofas
right say but why does it
say and one of my kids gave me what I
think is a very simple answer it Rhymes
okay but this was written by Ron you
know I mean this this stuff this isn't
just cute little things that you stick
in there yeah so uh
why at one time I saw a bener that had a
leut of mam on it I can't find it now
here I am doing mirus and I can't find
it
but I remember seeing they were selling
it and it's basically a bencher just has
little insights and this question has
bothered me for so many years and I said
if it gives an answer I will buy it and
then of course I can't find it but uh
but I opened up right to that why
is he says this is a Min that's made in
a frying
pan and says the
leuan even if your shme shabas is hard
and dry like a fried cake not white and
fluffy like like a Spong cake it's it's
it's hard and
dry who still wants your
shabas yeah this is a response to the
people who think you know if I can't do
it 100% why should I bother doing it
it's
okay
better to do it sometimes
yeah i' I've told this story back in Mya
Series where the way I heard the story
was there was this from person who was
meeting with benorian
and uh he looks he sees the sun getting
ready set he says I'm sorry I have to
die and he goes to the corner of the
room and he does what we call in the
vernacula a
quicky when he comes back benan says you
call that a m so he says no but because
I do that three times a day every now
and then I D with cavana he says if you
can say you've D with cavana once in
your life it's worth doing that three
times a day every day of your life it's
been
Goring so even if
is hard and dry
it he who rides up in the highest
Heavens the king of Worlds as
Amish uh to that we should keep the
shabas
E you uh made us he with pleasant
words um I I I think and I didn't see
this anywhere but I think uh you know
when hasem spoke at har we all died it
was a very difficult situation and it
says
very very hard words what do you
mean so I thought where did he say it
nicely when he said to uh the women
Co something soft so maybe this is like
I say
Ben right when when we're saying it over
to our children we say it over
pleasantly
all kinds of tasty treats and delicious
foods we dress up in clothing of honor
and we have a fancy family meal fancy
family
meal I've had secular people over my
house for shabas and they said what you
do here every shabas we call that
Thanksgiving once a year
we have a meal like this where we sit in
the dining room we take out the China
from the china cabinet you know says you
do this every single week it's a
Thanksgiving all the
time yeah and uh ashr which can be happy
or praised everyone
theyel you'll get rewarded twice all
shabas is is twice there's two
uh Brads this too everything everything
is doubled shabas is doubled sh
everything is doubled when it comes to
shabas yeah to everybody who keeps it he
who dwells in the
darkness if you keep it he will give you
a reward or give you a Naka an
inheritance in the mountain and in the
valley the valley has the advantage that
it's low down it's not hard to plow the
mountain has the advantage that you can
grow things on five sides on all four
sides and on the top Rashi explains so
you'll get in the mountain and in the
Valley now the gamar says that the you
know when it came to the to the GS you
know people want to make sure they got
mountains and valleys each one has an
advantage should Shine On You this rest
and this inheritance like the
sun everyone who keeps the shabas from
being
profaned um you will get the love of in
your
part and if you fulfill your obligations
of shabas again be Happ you'll be
praised
pleased that you gave this present to
this this is the end of the day the only
thing we can give to
is we
accept upon ourselves he has everything
but because he gave us free will the
only thing he doesn't have is US serving
[Music]
him we spoke about this the last time is
a thing where you desire the thing
itself to is called is
called day
of that's what God Called
It and uh if we protect it and keep it
we'll again be happy praise the if we
keep it
perfectly you'll get a
crown uh uh on on your
head yeah the uh the rock of forever
will make his his Spirit rest on you
it's very interesting you get a crown
because that is how the gar
explains with the crowns on their
heads right remember the shabas to make
it
holy
and this will put the crown thear on
your
head and so you will give to a person
happiness and pleasure all these things
you'll
get the The shabus Queen Is
Holy BR Rest In Your Homes BR comes from
shabas that is the source of
all yeah the story with
the where uh this uh fellow his son was
driving his wagon into chabas he wasn't
careful to stop at chabas Friday night
he was still driving his wagon so when
the you know made a stop in their Town
everybody was coming to get bras
so they wanted to tell the not to give
this guy a br unless he told his son to
stop driving his Wagon on chabus but
they couldn't tell him because by that
point was hard of hearing they would
have to say it loud and he would be
embarrassed so so the guy comes to the
to get a and he says what do you what do
you want from
me like we say in all BR comes from
shabas and if shabas isn't happy because
your son drives his wagon and your
daughter brushes her hair with a comb so
how can I give you a br he says I'm
going to go I'm going to speak to them
I'm going to be shabas he says okay then
I can give you a br everyone said no one
know know how he knew about the the
daughter with the comb that nobody knew
about yeah sikim so it's the source of
all if you keep shabas the br will come
into your
home that of course is based in the PK
don't do any
in all of your
dwellings there it is at the end again
sons and
daughters which is what we
said everybody has to
keep this is the most honored of the
days because on this
day the rock of all the world God rested
he chose this day because he rested
that's the
theme uh six days do you work on the
seventh day is for
Hashem on shabas didn't do because he
finished everything in six days so what
what it's telling us is
this why because otherwise you'll never
know it's
shabas do work on six days so that on
chabas it'll be clear that you're
stopping because hasem
rested mes it is the first day of all of
the holy days if you take a look in
Paras emor when it lists all of the Yum
to First it mentions chabas this is the
first shab shabas KES shabas is a
special day of shabas it's the highest
level
chabas um yam which is called
shab is
only you get the death penalty and
that's why the gar Milla says you get
six alyas on Yer but you get seven on
chabas it's
higher that's why we make Kish on wine
and we make
h on two loaves of bread the double
Miracle eat fat foods and drink sweet
wines key now it doesn't have to be high
in cholesterol when it says fatty foods
it means you know rich foods good good
foods right it talks about um you know
the fat of the grain so kind of good
fatty
grain
because hem gives reward to all those
who cling to
him clothing to wear and bread according
to your
measure and Meat and Fish and every
delicious
thing don't lack
anything
that of course is from benching eat and
be full and then bless
hasem because he chose you from all of
the people and shabas is that special o
between us and N Jews not allowed to
keep it's only for
us the heavens tell his glory and you
can see his fill the
Earth
[Music]
um everything is made from his hand he
is the rock whose acts are perfect and
therefore we recognize the world that
Hashem created in six days rested on the
seventh and so we as a testimony to
God's creation do that as
well
SH now this is a very interesting uh I
have a whole sheer on this you could
probably find it on t any
time the day of shabas never
forget it should be remembered like a
Corbin like the sweet smell of a
Corbin the Yona which was sent out by uh
Noah to see if he could find a dry land
to rest upon
it was on chabas and the people ask how
do you know that that was on chabas so
first out that says he
waited over again seven days so Vice do
it's talking about seven days which is
shabas and he sends the bird out and he
waits and the bird comes back and um it
says by Nightfall with a branch in its
mouth CU it waited till shabas was over
to pick the branch and it's brought down
to It's a Sign you can see and then when
he never came back and he found manah
that was on shabas 2 yeah so he found
manah and there everybody who is weak
will get strength from
chabas those who have faith honor the
days fathers and son
it was carved into
theem will strengthen
you now we talk about um M and it's
interesting that we go from the Y of
Noah
to we came in one
BR we all said which of course we also
accepted chabas
those who are tired God should give them
strength and again another reference to
um to
Har Hashem spoke on the mountain of Mo
again that would tie in with sweet
smelling he said both Z and Sh at the
same time
finish everything
beforehand strengthen yourself to keep
shabas G
yourself uh to keep the shabas now
here's the last
paragraph and the nation that is now
lost like uh wandering
sheep
should remember hasem remember your
confident and your
oath even though we've wandered and
we're so far away don't remember how you
promised not to hurt us not to anything
happen like you swore to Noah that you
would never bring another
flood so you'll notice the two major
themes here in addition to shabas is the
Mable
and and the connection is where when the
Torah was being given the nations of the
world came to Bam as is discussed in uh
the
to the world is returning there's going
to be another
mble and the world is going to be
destroyed and only Hashem will
exist and B him no Hashem promised it
wouldn't happen what you sense as a mble
is Hashem giving the Torah
owes and they
said oh good good luck to them because
just like the mble changed the entire
world forever so did the Torah and
therefore when you have an in the world
that is as much of a for the nations of
the world because we speak the truth and
they have to work so hard to cancel us
out and the same effect that the Mable
had that's the effect that the mat toyra
had to the world and that's why one of
the names for har is har from
ofb right we keep hashem's tah Hashem
Will Keep Us
it'll be a sign shabas is a
sign between me and
Hashem you can't do any of your normal
things you can't talk business or any of
your
needs you can't talk business and
politics just learn and become
smart
in chabas I will always find rest for my
soul shabas gives you a rest it's a
spiritual date that regenerates
you um the first generation that got the
toyra we gave
chabas m a
Wonder all the way to creation of the
world when I said
Rashi says at the creation of The World
God said that's going to be a reference
to the double portion of M that will
fall on Friday and none will fall on
chabas the BR is on Friday and the kadha
is on chabas that is how we know chabas
is built in the creation right from the
beginning of creation the first
generation
and we should always have this double
that Shas
brings he wrote down for
his his uh his nobleman his assistants
this
[Music]
is that the in the B MDES would be set
up on chabas which makes sense because
since chabas is the source of all
they would take the him which
represented the of for the food and for
all of their
needs
yeah that's why because the eating on
shabas ises like
the therefore you cannot fast on chabas
except for
y it's an HED day of
pleasure boss of a dog yeah bread wine
meat fish all the good
things you have to be happy you're not
allowed to mourn on shabas even a
mourner is not allowed to mourn on
chabas anyone who does on this day and
it's will
be so clean your heart be
honest
yeah your heart should be bis as a as a
cleaning agent make your heart wash your
heart and the four times the four
of all
right keep
shabas so that you
will is like a to be uh to be nursed
like a
baby be
fill from the light of my
BR yeah will
come and they will be
led and I'll give them all of the
pleasures
shabas shabas is for God
dra is
freedom everybody goes
free um so from all work we go
free and I will give you
my and it will be one after another
after another literally it means a woman
to her sister but it means connection
one connection to
another will be revealed on this day of
Happiness
big wear linen clothing with uh with
Rich dyed Crimson
wool M
Kai and think of the of the uh the
sages
yeah quickly prepare the meal like
Esther commanded right um
when when AES found out that
um morai was the one responsible for
saving his life he tells uh he tells um
Hammon quickly quickly hurry and uh
take um lead him on the when Esther
comes and says to I have a request he
says what I want to make a suit and I
want you and hamon to come and they say
quickly bring
hamon and medish tells us but most
people know it from the perm tape that
after they poured the the uh bucket of
Filth on his head when he was leading
morai they rushed him to come to the
suda you know even though he didn't have
a chance to wash up and change
yeah quickly like es commanded to make
the
preparations and uh don't worry what
you're spending got to work out
the to buy food and have left over you
understand you you you the way you
prepare for shabas is not the way you
prepare for anything else when I was a
kid you know so I would get a brown
paper bag or more likely back then I get
a lunchbox metal lunch box with the who
knows what on the outside and um you
know so you'd get a tuna fish sandwich
on White Bread a Hawaiian
Punch uh maybe an apple and a bag of
chips that's a great lunch but if
someone comes over for shabas lunch and
you give them like a tuna fish sandwich
with a Hawaiian Punch and apple on a bag
of chips they're not going to be so
impressed maybe they will depends on the
age group I guess but um shabas you make
all kinds of fancy things remember we
had these two girls from the very Li
they used to come to us very often on
Friday night but they never came shabas
day so I said to them once why don't you
ever come shabas day he goes everyone
knows you go to the good Cooks on Friday
night because anyone can make a chant
you know CH and a cou because but the
the the really fancy food is on Friday
night don't you want to come so we make
fancy
food Mak enough to have
leftovers you ever go some place where
there's like six people and there are
six pieces of chicken
I was one of six boys my mother always
cooked for an army didn't matter you
know even after there was nobody at home
you know I was I told I was coming you
know I'd be there for shabas you know I
was coming to visit so my brother would
tell me don't tell Mom you're coming
just show up because then she has less
time to prepare because if she knows
you're coming she'll make a brisket and
a
turkey it's just you know there's no way
no way the two of you are going to
finish all that you know so uh but you
make enough to have leftovers shabas
leftover shabas leftovers a concept here
it
is trust in me don't worry I'll take
care of you your shabas expenses are not
into whatever is given to
you how much money you're gonna have so
have byy fine wine for shabas don't
worry
the Redemption will come if you keep
shabas be my chosen
people
um so uh stay and we will pass through
to uh to this
GAA and then you will live before me
live before me and be filled with uh
with all the great things I'll give
you strengthen yourself
City to
Hashem yeah speaking of course about
J and bring us
to with happiness
rejoicing and
then we will sing to you
happily
us the
the and then we will get pleasure from
Hashem okay one more we're going to do
I'm not going to do Shas I'm Gonna Save
shalas for another time I want to talk
about shalas and the mirors that we do
on shalas and it's all part and parcel
of what we're trying to
accomplish
dra draw is of course freedom for the
Son and the
daughter and
uh give them like the like a apple of my
eye the uh wonderful things the the the
the the glory will never
stop because we rest on
chabas
[Music]
seek out the bikash and the which is the
front
chamber and sign of salvation of of
redemption make for
us a precious branch in uh in the
vineyard
me and uh we will uh DAV and
praise
trample
uhra the city in modern day
Iraq um and the medish says that's where
the final battle will be the Malik of
asov will run to batra before mash comes
he will be
destroyed
and also B which of course was the first
nation to destroy the B mikdash and
every Exile we're going in is just a
continuation of
B and there's a gamarra that indicates
that b represents yesel and the power
that the Arabs have over us so um
overpower
B
the go against our enemies with anger
and and uh and
Fury
yeah listen to our voice when we cry
out
elim and out in the
desert the mountainous
deserts you will plant all these
beautiful flowers and
plants those who are
careful you will give uh all of the
Peace like a flowing
river um squeeze them the enemies God of
Vengeance with the with a strong heart
the
M get get their heart and their
punishment yeah so give us that strength
instead
and open up our mouth and fill it with
songs of
praise your will be to our to give us to
our life and it'll be a
crown we will protect your holy mitzvah
shabas and keep your holy
shabas right shabas
sh like I say when I was in yiva we
didn't do it so I'm going to skip it now
not that it's not
significant but uh those
are
the um Zas uh of the day and uh it's
interesting there are some people I know
who are better at singing zus at night
and some people who are better at
singing Mir during the day each one of
them has their own character to them
because as we mentioned when we talked
about
Theus uh the
night we stress the fact that created
the world and in the day we stress the
fact that gave us the Torah and we're
keeping it because of the Torah and we
go back to that uh to that commandment
and it's you know on us and so the miror
each one of them that have been chosen
to be sung during this day
are uh unique to this now um I want to
do uh a uh a show with um one of my sari
friends who will explain the sari
ziros um which they have different ziros
than the ashkenazic tradition KES shabas
I think is the overlap and uh we'll have
that coming up and I hope to bring in
somebody where we'll focus on the tunes
because the Tunes in themselves
are and uh lend a certain power to the
words and that's it for now until next
time you can find out more about the
show by going to my website rowski dcom
