hi this is doug dolowski and welcome to
the raboyolowski show
[Music]
and whether you're watching with our
friends over at tour anytime whoever you
watch or listen to your podcast as
always we're happy to have you along
and this episode is sponsored
anonymously
in honor of my wife's birthday his
wife's birthday not my wife's birthday
my wife just had her birthday
um
and uh it uh it was a big one you're not
supposed to mention a lady's age but
let's just say that there is a minute to
make a big celebration when you pass
this birthday because according to at
least one shita you're not
curious
because as it says in
pakistan i don't want to say which
birthday she celebrated but just uh
the
children made her this beautiful
celebration and uh one of my sons moshe
yehuda who you saw on the waterbury
music episode
um which
at this point is the highest watched
episode because evidently he has a lot
of friends
[Laughter]
and uh that's our number one episode as
it happens so he composed the song and
my sons and son-in-laws all sang it uh
i would put up a copy just so you can
hear it because the brilliance of it is
really something
uh that's unique i remember just
watching they made a music video out of
it and i thought
what a talented group
of uh people
my family is it's uh
it's amazing anyway so uh
so it's not my wife's birthday it's his
wife's birthday anonymous mrs anonymous
and um
uh
which is a partial
my best friend role model and most
fabulous mother of our children may
hashem grant you many years of simha
nachas and true closeness between you
and me and you and hashem isn't that
beautiful
what better gift is there to give a
loved one on their birthday than to
sponsor a rabbilowski show
um
we're slowly trying to put together the
numbers it's hard to get it down but
there's about 10 000 people who listen
to this show
and uh the torah
and i i would say as the song goes torah
and simcha
ready to go right
because uh a lot of people just
write and say how much simcha they get
from this show how much happiness and in
this
day and age
we need simcha we need to be happy so
all that of course should go towards
mits hashem your your wife's birthday
and it should be a tremendous thing for
all of you
okay we're uh we're doing tefila we
mentioned uh we're in the middle of a
series
and uh i started off by listing the
different types of things you can do
with the tevilla the sheva
and bakasha
now i want to start getting
into
um
a slightly more practical thing
there's uh
as i mentioned
that tfila is called avodah shabalive
avodah it's it's work
it's effort
feel it does not
usually come easily to people it's
something that you have to struggle to
achieve and to make meaningful
i heard a story many years ago
i'm not going to say it over in the name
of the person i remember hearing it from
because i met the fellow years later
and he heard that i quoted this story in
his name and he didn't remember saying
the story so i won't quote it in his
name anymore
uh
but that's okay this has happened to me
before where i've heard things from
people and even though my memory is not
the best i do remember this because it
made a deep impression on me and the
person doesn't remember saying it i can
relate to that people
quote things back to me that i don't
remember having said
my daughter was just listening to a uh
to a share
and the fellow quoted me
saying something i have no recollection
ever having said
and uh
i see it's the kind of thing i could
have said
it was the famous camaro with represent
which says we pray that had a student he
had to repeat
everything over 400 times for him to
understand it
and one time he told him listen i'm
gonna have to go to a chevy brachas
afterwards
and he said it over his usual 400 times
and the boy still didn't cop
he says my high what's different today
because i was nervous the whole time you
were gonna leave
he says okay i'm not gonna go i'm gonna
stay till you get this and he toured it
another 400 times
and the bosco came out and said
you know we prayed there is uh a venom
haber
the question is that he asked is why
didn't the boy get a bus call
so he says babilovsky gives an answer
because the bosco didn't want to have to
repeat itself 400 times
no i have no recollection of saying it
but it's the kind of thing i would have
said you know
so uh in fact one of my most famous
expressions
uh that i use when i'm teaching massive
shacharim
is that most people live the life that
happens instead of the life that they
want
i don't ever remember having said that
but
uh when i taught in seminary the girls
had a board where they would put up
their favorite quotes of the week
and i happened to pass it by and i saw a
quote from me
and it said
most people live the life that happens
instead of the life they want i said
that's brilliant i don't remember ever
saying that so now i quote the board
instead of quoting myself because i just
don't remember yeah that's what happens
sometimes you forget your own thing
there was a famous western
actor called john wayne
and he had this particular way of
walking and this particular way of
talking so there's this guy rich little
who's an impersonator
and he says one time i was on the lot
and john wayne says little come here
i come over and say yes mr wing
says i forgot how i do my walk show me
how i do it
[Laughter]
uh i remember reading
when they made the uh the song we are
the world
so they pulled out a whole bunch of
different music stars and one of them
was
uh bob dylan
and everyone knew how bob dylan sang
because i would not be so
learned everybody i'm not
like a
rollins stone i know this because uh one
of my brothers used to listen to him
when i was in high school and he would
blast
bob dylan
going like this
and i would lie in my bed with a wet
washcloth on my eyes and pray for death
but uh it was you know so by the time he
was doing where the world he he didn't
talk that way
and they had to remind him how to sing
it like bob dylan because he wasn't
singing like bob dylan anymore right so
the person who told me the story doesn't
remember having told me the story so i
won't quote him but
uh i remember hearing this story
uh ben gurion
who was prime minister in the early
years of the state
um had a uh had a friend who uh
who was uh
from
and uh
he was meeting with ben gurion and at
some point he looked at his watch
he noticed it's coming to time of mincha
and he says
you know
david you have to excuse me
and he goes in the corner and he does
what is known in the vernacular as a
quickie minecraft
we've all we've all done these on
occasion where we suddenly realize uh
kind of pressed for time or in a
situation and the plane's about to leave
you know you got to do a quickie minika
you know he goes in the corner he does a
quickie mancha
and when he sits back down
then guardian looks at him and says
you called that a milka
it's a very interesting insight you know
um
ben-gurion famously said when they
wanted to
recognize reform in israel he says
the shul that i don't daven in is
orthodox
there was this uh attitude at one point
in israel it was a strong sense
of uh
of of identity you know it's either real
it's not that's it i mean i go i mean i
participate but at least i know what it
is yeah
so uh
so you know what it was is you call that
a milka yeah
um
there's a book called
skull caps and switchblades
about this uh from fellow who teaches in
an inner city school
and he didn't want to wear his yarmulke
so uh
he would wear a cap
and the first day
the principal who is he describes him as
a very tall large black gentleman
calls him in
and says
the dress code is you can't wear a cap
in the school
put on your yarmulke
sometimes sometimes we need other people
to remind us you know what's really
important so david mcgregor says to him
you call that a minka
he says no
but because i do that three times a day
every now and then i come up with a
meaningful feeling
he says if you can say you've had a
meaningful feeler once in your life then
i agree
it's worth doing that three times a day
every day of your life
to say i've had one real feeler
somebody has to have a
time i don't have kavanaugh anyway why
should i buy the davening
i'll wait till the spirit hits me
the spirit moves me and then i'll dub it
so
because slime says i'll give you a
marshall
most of the jews in europe lived in
small
villages
now if you got a town of 50 people
you're not going to be able to support a
lot of businesses
uh
out of town communities
uh
want to have
the
pizza place
if you don't have a kosher pizza place
you're not on the map
yeah
i i spent the showers in denver
this is years ago i don't know the
situation today
um
but uh
i went out to denver and uh one one
thing i noticed is that there's no air
oh call me crazy i've gotten used to
breathing
[Laughter]
it might be a bit of a luxury but that's
me i like to breathe i the whole time
i'm panting they keep telling me drink
and i said i'm not thirsty i'm dying
there's no hair
people people in denver get used to it
yeah but um um
so uh when i was there there was one
restaurant on one side it was milking
someone said it was flashing that was it
and i was asked a number of times uh how
come new york jews don't move out here
to denver
i said well
based on um the air air flight that i
had in order to reach this
mile high mountain
uh you're really inconveniently located
you're not near anything you're in the
middle of the mountains that's one thing
i said but besides that why would a new
year jew move here they said what do you
mean
we have lakes we have swimming we have
hiking we have water skiing we have
fishing
uh we have i said okay okay let's back
up
new york jews don't want to do any of
that
[Laughter]
when a new york jew goes on vacation
they find some resort hotel and they sit
in the lobby that's it
they find a chair and they sit there for
a week and they say when's lunch
i said that's it they want to do two
things they want to shop and go out to
eat that's it you've got one restaurant
here that's just not going to be enough
yeah
i said this once to someone i knew in
flatbush i said i don't know all you're
doing brooklyn is go out to eat all you
do is go out to eat he says how could
you say that he says my rebbe came in
from richmond i went to the airport and
i picked him up you know
i brought up to brooklyn i said really
and what did you do so we went out to
eat
i appreciate it yeah
i find
i was talking to somebody from brooklyn
and i said i'm going in with my family
and we're trying to decide what sites to
see
you know do we want to see uh you know
the empire state building uh statue of
liberty you know and we had like a
brooklyn day you know what should we go
to he goes well of course go to
pomegranate
for those of you not from the new york
area it is a very large supermarket
i said are you for real you want me to
go to a supermarket because it's not
just supermarket you know they've got uh
they've got uh um
mayonnaise in a tube that comes from
europe i said is it better than
hellmann's because no then what do i
want it for
he says well they have aged meat uh they
have edible flowers you know i said you
know what i'll watch the yalili video
and i'll go through all the aisles and
see what's there yeah
well i need to go and see a supermarket
yeah it's a different perspective when
it comes to food yeah so if you don't
have at least a kosher pizza place
you're not even on the map nobody's
going to come to your community
so there are towns
where they raise money to open a kosher
pizza place
so that they can be considered a real a
real community
yeah
so uh
very exciting
so uh so
if you're a small town you can't support
a lot of things hard to keep a kosher
pizza place going so a little shtetl
as i probably had
you know
butcher who would check the chicken you
know before yanta maybe a cow
um probably maybe i had a baker
at a grocery store well it was about how
much could you
support 50 families yeah
so one thing they didn't usually have
was a watchmaker
there's 50 families
how many people are buying watches and
how much watch repair is there to do
so there were traveling craftsmen who
would go around from statel destato they
had a circuit
and
they'd come into town
okay
maybe there were 50 watches in the town
maybe less
so you got a day's work maybe two days
work
you know to fix the watches
so he made a circuit around he'd come
once every three years
so
the watchmaker comes to town everyone
brings their watches
and he starts looking at the watches and
he puts him in two piles
he says these i can fix these i can't
fix
so people said what's what's the
difference he says
these watches when they stopped working
they just put in the drawer and left it
there
it became a little rusted
it doesn't pay to fix it i'd have to
take out every single piece and sand it
down and just buy another watch
these when they stopped working
their owners kept winding them so they
stayed well oiled
so there's a spring that's broken or
this piece that i replaced
but at least it's still in working
condition
if you dive in three times a day
so you keep
the machine oiled so that when the
kavana hits you when the moment hits you
you have all of the skills available
but a person that doesn't darven
we think we'll suddenly get a moment of
inspiration and then we'll
open up a sitter
yeah you're right if somebody nebuchad
is sick or something terrible is going
on then maybe you'll reach for you to
heal him but a person who doesn't dive
in the
dominating muscles become atrophied
and the
gears become rusted and it becomes that
much harder for you now to be able to
sit down and dive in
therefore whether you're diving with
cavano or not diamond
three times a day
and so
the saminyanim will
be more to your liking and others not
there's a story uh with rahulna
came
and was trying to decide between two
yeshivas
and this one has these mylars this one
had those milers they were trying to
decide which one to choose
and the footness said
sit in each bass madrish and just learn
for an hour
and see
which one appeals to you more
because at the end of the day
a
uh yeshiva is a tsinor it's a pipe
that's going to bring down your shepherd
of torah and not everything hooks up to
every pipe you know there's different
sizes and each one has to go and be
attached to the one that makes sense for
it
i say the same thing about mignano
now it could be you live in a small town
i mean so small that they don't even
have a kosher pizza place right so then
that's it you don't have much of a
choice this is your minion you're going
to go you're going to make it work and
but if you live in a large community
and somebody said to me you should
always live in a town with at least two
shulls
all right
i said why a couple of reasons
one is if you sleep late you don't go
so sure you can always tell everybody i
went to the other minion
and the other one is
that um
you know every jew needs a shield that
he doesn't dive in it says i wouldn't
dive it over there
you only have one jewel what do you do
yeah you have to make dumanyan but
anyway uh
so you live in a small community with a
small show
i grew up
in north merrick long island
it's amazing some people have heard of
merrick
merrick is a very jewish upper middle
class neighborhood
on the water a very nice place i lived
in north merrick
which was a
lower middle class
mostly catholic
we had a sacred heart
school in
north america
i remember when i was growing up the
merrick public library
they had
audio-visual
materials it was a big fancy thing you
could do north my republican library had
like four books you know i mean if they
were out you had to wait just sit there
it was much less exciting yeah
so um uh i grew up in north america so
um
my father was one of the founders of the
east meadow jewish center which was a
conservative synagogue was about a mile
away
and uh when i got bar mitzvah i didn't
want to go to a conservative synagogue
anymore so i found there was an orthodox
synagogue the anger of north belmore
it was a mile and a quarter away
this required a tremendous amount of
commitment for me because
walking was never one of my strong
points
yeah
and
i have been wrestling with a weight
problem most of my life
i in fact had
a copy of the first edition of the
atkins diet
i started dieting uh with atkins when i
was 14.
and i always had a problem with it so
when you're heavy and you gotta walk you
know
so i would walk a mile and a quarter
friday night and back
i would walk shabbos morning and back
i'd walk from her and off and back
because i couldn't get it right
and uh that's uh
it's a lot of walking of course with
chavez yeah for a fellow to whom walking
does not come easily
so um uh but we decided to go there and
it was a
small show
maybe 40 families
i'm not even sure if it was 40 families
it was it was a real small show
that was it but we were lucky to have
that
and in fact
as i would walk from north merrick there
were people from east meadow
for them it was three miles to walk
they would walk to be able to find a
from minion
so you don't have a lot of options
available
yeah
uh i had a friend who used to travel
around
for his business he would send them to
different places
and uh
and he said if when i was in the town i
would look to see a kosher shop
he's english that's why he says shop
i'd look to find a kosher shop and buy
myself something to eat
and uh and one time i was sent
you know my company sent me to this
place
on long island called the five towns
so i saw a
closer story one of the guests i'm
indeed
i walked
two stores i saw another coaster shop i
stopped to get some id i was nauseous by
the end of the block
and i didn't even go through the whole
neighborhood
[Laughter]
so if you have a lot of choice
that's wonderful
no you can try to find a million if you
don't have any choice you never need a
choice
but if you have a lot of choice you have
to decide what minion works for me
um
some people like a minion that goes very
slow
takes a lot of time gives a lot of time
to say things
yeah they don't want to feel rushed
i feel like uh
they're always going through sugar
december too fast they don't have time
to say all the words
they want they want to dive in slowly
yeah
other people do not want to dive in
slowly
they find it slightly oppressive they
want to dive in fast
whether that's uh right or wrong is
irrelevant
it's just if you put them into a long
minion they start to go crazy
they start talking they start
you know my brother has a minion in west
hampstead
and he tells people it will go quickly
but there's no talking
you want to talk go to a different
minion
here there's no talking we will not drag
it out we'll move it quickly but
no talking
so where there are other people who love
to go to benjamin where they're talking
they enjoy it
i may have told the story uh
my rebbe
who was makari of me ra my yakov whale
does that sound
he said there were these two guys
talking in show and i said to them you
got to come to schuler talk
they said sure i could talk and i could
dive in at home but i got nobody to talk
to i got to come to schuler talk
[Laughter]
it's a
uh it's a challenge i find talking
control gets me crazy
it gets me very upset
yeah
my brother goodalia who lives in muncie
who's one of my heroes
um
is a much nicer person than i am now
that jeans worked out differently in the
family you know i i uh i get a lot of my
dad mate
he's a really really nice guy he always
was anyway
he went to a gateway shop at tone which
you know gateways makes these chapatanim
for
from people for inspiration
he says i got i got to show a little
late
so i ended up sitting in the back and i
never like to sit in the back because
that's where the talkers are i like to
sit up front but okay the front was full
so i sit down on the back
comes to crease the tiger
and these two guys are talking
and it's disruptive i can't hear
so i said please
you know i can't hear the laning they
said okay
a minute later they start talking again
so my brother says to them you came to a
gateway champion because you want to be
inspired because you care you're a
little bit more interested in yiddish
guy
don't come here and talk to the
darpaning go outside if you want
they said no no you're right
a minute later they start talking again
so my brother says to them i'm a kohen
and in the schools of you not talking
during davening i give you a bracha that
you should have a large prognosis this
year
at least stop talking
he ended up one of them came over to my
brother and said you think all i care
about is money
and i would have said obviously that was
the only way i could get you to shut up
but i said my brother's nicer than me
and
he uh
he said no but i knew a person like you
would know how to use the money that a
kojo baruch who gave you to help clyde
yourself
but okay i know some people like to talk
during davening and and
if you've ever been a shul
where they talk during divining and the
rabbi keeps stopping keep stopping
giving those looks
the look
that they get
from
certain people in the congregation
that if they were on the level of
the rabbi would turn into a heap of
bones
if they were on the level of shimba you
would turn into a pile of ashes
such hatred that they have
they want to talk during david
and you could try stopping them but they
want to talk people want to talk they
got to talk
so some people
they like that kind of minion other
people don't some people like a minion
that's very long other people don't
some people like a minion where the
people are friendly
um
when i first
moved to my new apartment i used to dive
in
i had a minion that was in a mcclot it
was at a bomb shelter
and um
it was small
but if anybody walked in
somebody would run over and get them a
chair
find a spot to put them that they
shouldn't have to stand
and everybody said kachabas at the end
the people were very warm
there's another show in my neighborhood
where i remember when they put in air
conditioning
i overheard this conversation they said
oh we're getting air conditioning he
says i didn't know your shawl could be
any colder than it already is
it's an amazing thing
the rub there was a cohen and i'm a
cohen and an aired shell you dukhan
every day twice on shabbos i used to
dominate during the week on the shabbos
for years
the rev never said a word to me not a
hello not a good job it's not a show
nothing
now
okay some people like that they want to
come in they want to darven they don't
want to be seen don't give my name don't
give my identification don't show my my
green pass here in israel they have a
green pass if you've been vaccinated uh
you can get in you know
you know i don't want to show my
agreement and i want to be identified
other people like it people say how are
you what's going on
i have a good friend yeti shapiro he's
right now working on building a shul
and uh
and he says in america
a shul is your life
people become part of a kehillah
and you have a place to share your
simchas share your tragedies he says in
itself and we're generalizing but
there's two types of people those who
generalize and those who don't so i'm
generalizing
um it says in israel people just want a
shul to david
they just go and they dive in and
they'll very often go to the closest one
and so they don't have to walk too far
and uh you know they'll dive over here
but to seek out a shure that's going to
be a part of you
um
that's why very often your community is
is your building
were your friends or your family
but the the shield people don't really
have a sense of community it's a big
problem if bulma's outside said to me
that this is
uh the worst thing that happened to the
american community is that when they
started coming on aliyah they didn't
establish
uh an american
vod
that could represent americans
they uh
they got lost
lost in the shuffle very often happens
and people try to find a place
you know
i live in harnove
and uh
not to cast dispersions on harnoff per
se like i say this happens in a lot of
communities
um
a lot of people don't know each other
robertson este amish started an
organization to try to get
people to
you know have
have friends have connections
you know come together with things
because it's it's such a problem yeah
but uh
it's also built on the side of a
mountain so some people use the elevator
hop they go into a building take the
elevator up to the next level across the
street take the elevator back some
buildings don't like this
they put up signs it's only for
residents people can't use the elevator
yeah
so um
so there's one guy's waiting for the
elevator and someone from the building
sees him and says uh who are you
visiting
he says i've lived in this building for
six months
he says oh welcome
[Laughter]
so some people want a friendly show
where people are are warm and they and
they participate in your life
but you got to find a place where you
feel comfortable going if you wake up in
the morning and you're in dread
i i gotta go i gotta go to school
it's a terrible thing
um when i first came there was really
only one shull around in the area where
i was living
and it was
ridiculously overcrowded
so you'd come to david ing and you had
to find a uh sitter you had to find a
clemish and you had to find a seat
mama cohen so i gotta go durkhen
so i go to wash my hands i go to dark
and i come back my seat is gone my horse
is gone my center's gone
so you end up standing for the rest of
davening and there's just not enough
room
you take three steps back to
schmonastery and someone slips into the
spot
oh yeah yeah
and i would come back so aggravated
every shabbos my wife said i'm going to
ask a shiloh that it's awesome of you to
go to school
because you ruined shabbos for yourself
and everybody else because you're so
miserable
you can't go someplace where you're not
going to be happy
you got to find a sure
um and and as i always say if they don't
have such a show start it
be proactive
you're not a victim
you can take uh things in your hands but
you have to find a minion where you feel
comfortable
having said that
most of the time when you darven it's
not going to be a truly meaningful
feeling to get as as david ben-gurion
said if you can get one truly meaningful
feeling in your life that's an
unbelievable thing
we struggle we struggle i'm going to
talk uh in the next podcast about you
know methods to be able to use to try to
help you concentrate and and focus on
this but
but the point is
you gotta play to win that's what they
say in in lotto yeah in the lottery you
gotta play to win
if you don't if you don't play the odds
of you if you don't buy a ticket the
odds of winning the lottery drop
dramatically
i would say almost to zero
if you buy a ticket your
your odds are also close to zero but
they're a little higher because at least
there's a ticket with no ticket what are
you gonna do if you don't dive in the
gears will rust
you're not gonna be able to to to
when that moment hits you when that
inspiration hits you to be able to do it
so the first thing is you have to dive
you have to dive don't worry
if it's uh as sincere as it should be
don't worry if you're just running
through it
don't worry that it's not good enough
for anyone else to hear
just davin
three times a day
i think that's how it goes anyway
so uh that's it you gotta focus you
gotta dive in first thing is
you gotta show up
you gotta play
and then from there we can figure out
how to make it more meaningful
okay we're up to our question and answer
uh segment
anonymous asks
how do you pick your questions do you
reply to people who contact you
i pick my questions by whichever one
happens to be on the paper that is put
in front of me by my producer
this is called the scientific method
i took journalism 101 it was one of the
four college courses that i took in a
vain attempt to try to get my make my
parents happy and eventually i realized
i would never make my parents happy so i
wasn't gonna spend four years in college
and still have them be unhappy but um
uh but one of the things they said in
journalism is the most important story
is the one that your editor cares about
so uh you know if you know his uh his
wife is the president of the garden club
then for sure write a story about the
garden club it's gonna it's gonna make
it into the uh into the issue it was
very interesting and uh
news is uh
is always um subjective how it goes so
whichever questions i happen to have in
front of me those ones they answer our
plan is to answer all the questions
we have hashem enough of podcasts and
it's not like we have been inundated
with questions
and some of them are easier to answer
like how do you pick your questions
that's a pretty easy one to answer
and do you reply to people contact you
yeah i do i do try to reply but a lot of
it depends on the question
so if it's a short question
it's easier for me to respond right away
if it's a
complex question
where i have to give it thought
and time so i uh put a lot more uh
effort into it so i don't answer it
right away and the problem is that you
know the little window in my email only
holds a certain number of emails and
then it starts to drift down to the
bottom i actually have to scroll down
and find the emails that i didn't answer
so
every now and then i do that i take an
afternoon and i say i'm going to start
answering all my my old emails and
somebody was like i sent you this
question a year ago i said i know but i
you know didn't scroll all the way down
yet
so yeah i really do try to contact them
but depending on the type of question
um
it
takes more time by nature i'm more of a
verbal person uh writing does not come
that easily to me
and so i
takes much more time so like
when my kids
you know
send me an email or a text i usually
just write back and say call me because
it's much easier for me to to answer a
phone call and express myself than to
compose it
also
emails are uh
a terrible medium for communicating
and that's why when you find people get
themselves into trouble it's because
they're responding in uh email talk
where
it sounds very abrupt
because people are not gonna
write all the things they would say if
they were talking and so they write it
very short and you know it comes out
sounding harsh at times
so i very often will
write a reply and i'll look it over and
i have to rewrite the whole thing
because i don't like the way it sounds
so yeah i try to answer all of them but
it does take time
yoda kravitz asks being that you so
often use comic characters as a muscle
what are your thoughts on wokeness
taking over the comics industry
this is such an excellent question and
i'll give you some background
i basically read comics in the 1960s
for those of you who are
uh comic book aficionados
it was what was called the silver age
the golden age of comics was like in the
40s
um
the just a society of america
um
the old captain america things like that
40s 50s
and then it died out and in the 60s it
made a revival
and uh
that's when the flash went from you know
jay garrick to barry allen and uh a
whole bunch of different characters
changed that's when um
uh the green lantern became hal jordan
you know
um
as opposed to uh the old green lantern
there were there were different um there
were different chains that took place
that was when i read comic books i was a
kid
i escaped into a fantasy existence it
was very good for me and because reality
was not that great
and i i used to read these comic books
and i found it very interesting and
often educational
they deal with a lot of scientific
principles and
things from history and
very very interesting
at some point i stopped buying comics
right obviously you reach a certain age
by the time i was a teenager i was not
reading comic books anymore so my comic
book years are a
very narrow span of time
as
comic books began evolving
and uh including
um
relationship
and
stuff like that
i would never have read comic books
under those circumstances
but i did when they were relatively
harmless and it was just
you know the good guy fighting the bad
guy and coming up with some clever way
to be able to uh
for superman to get mix of pixel x to
say his name backwards that's not easy
yeah and other kind of things like this
but that was those are the kind of
things that i read i i didn't really
see when they started getting more
modern and edgy
yeah the edgiest i remember is
um
spider-man
best friend was
uh harry osborne
who later became a hobby goblin but he
ended up
using drugs
he turned to drug use and i remember it
was the first comic book
that didn't get the comic book seal of
approval there's some kind of little
seal they put on because it was too edgy
that was considered too edgy
so uh
all standards are going today obviously
so um
i never read them
but
the very fact that you have to turn
around
these characters and uh
morph them into something else
is just just terrible the whole thing is
terrible
i'll give you an example there's this
move to
make james bond uh black
or a woman
or black woman
or a black trans woman you know
i don't know what
you know
james bond is british
he's a british
you know fellow you want to make a black
superhero there are plenty of them you
want to make a black action hero
what they were never black action heroes
there were plenty of them why don't you
make a black action hero that's not
enough black action heroes out there
in history you have to take th the white
guy and and turn him into something else
for what
and i feel that way about everything
why are you twisting it
there's a
it's an amazing thing because you know
if a white person dresses up like a
black person that's racist
but if you want to take
uh alexander hamilton
you know and and everybody in the
american revolution make them black
that's okay
that you can do it the other way i don't
understand why
just keep things the way they are that's
the way it is and uh
i don't know why they would mess around
with it but once
once comic books started getting into
you know
these kind of personal
issues and sexuality all this kind of
stuff it has no place
kids are not should not be reading this
um the purpose of comic books is to give
people the idea of being a hero and
being brave and
you know that's
that's what's important that's what uh i
i think the message was so yeah i think
it's a terrible thing and i
would urge everyone to boycott comic
books
that um have messed around in that way
i happen to read a
news story
everyone knows that
captain america's biggest villain
was uh
was uh red skull
they both got the same super serum stuff
and one of them turned evil one turned
good i mean okay
you know
your arch enemy is always you just in a
different form
uh that's what the joker is to batman uh
that's what um
general zod is to superman it's the same
character only the reverse flash to the
flash that's how it goes
so red skull is captain america's enemy
anyway
they had a comic i only i only read
about this in the news
where red skull is writing his 12 rules
for life
which was written as an attack on jordan
peterson
who wrote 12 rules for life
yeah
clean up your room take responsibility
stuff like this this is red skull
so jordan peters and i saw an interview
with him and he says
so someone said someone goes well i see
that they had to make you a nazi he goes
oh no it wasn't enough to make me a nazi
they had to make a super powered nazi
they had to turn me into a superhero
nazi not just a nazi a superhero nazi
because i say things like clean up your
room
[Laughter]
so yeah these things do not deserve the
time of day the the industry has been
taken over and like i say
it it's always a danger when i make
these cultural references but i'm going
back so many years obviously to the 60s
when that's when i read comic books
i may have mentioned this once upon a
time when i was teaching in remy centers
yeshiva
so um
i i referenced mad magazine
which
doesn't exist anymore but um i also read
that as a kid in the 60s you know they
had this thing spy versus spy he was a
little cartoon
so
afterwards very center said to me you
can't mention mad magazine
it's uh
filled with inappropriate material now
i was shocked
when i was a kid it had corny jokes and
you know silly stuff but it wasn't it
wasn't off color
now
you weren't even allowed to mention it
so yeah
um
uh
there when it comes to superheroes i'm
i'm only making references to the silva
age that's what i'm familiar with i'm
not really familiar with the golden age
and i really am not familiar with
anything that took place afterwards
and uh
i'm just
filling in uh those aspects
okay that's it for this episode
