Is Rosh Hashanah on Shabbos Dangerous?

This is Dov Laski with our question and answer where in a few minutes we try to answer listeners questions. Listener writes, do we need to be more scared about this coming year that Rosh Hashanah comes out on Shabbos because the last two times it happened there was a big tragedy. The tragedy that happened in Meron on Lag Baomer and of course the tragedy that happened in the south of Israel on Simchas Torah. So, do we have to be worried and what can we do this year so that it will be better? Well, I'll answer the first question. Yes. The Gemara says that when Rosh Hashanah comes out on Shabbos, we don't have to hear a shofar. And when you blow the shofar, HaKadosh Baruch Hu moves from the throne of judgment to the throne of mercy. And when you don't blow shofar, he doesn't. And therefore the Gemara says that any year when Rosh Hashanah comes out on Shabbos, you have to worry more about that year. So, what can we do? We have to be strong. We're going to have to spend more effort to be able to get a positive outcome. Um I will share with you just the insight of Reb Moshe Feinstein where he says that there are different reasons that are brought down for the key of shofar. The Versed you go and brings down 10 reasons. And one of them is to remind us to listen to the words of the Chachamim. And since the Chachamim told us not to blow shofar on Rosh Hashanah, if we go into Rosh Hashanah saying it's not that we're not blowing shofar, it's the Chachamim told us not to and so we are accepting upon ourselves the words of the sages, then that can act as the power of kishka. So, uh every one of us, if I had to say one area that we should strengthen ourselves in, I would say to strengthen ourselves in accepting upon ourselves the words of the khakhamim and of the sages and to treat it with the proper respect and dignity.
