Hi, this is David Olowski with the para
in five where in five minutes we give
you an insight into the para that
hopefully will help to enhance your
shabas because as we've said many times
sometimes uh shabas has a name like
shabas or shabasone
but when we we say it's parasv
it's not that it's paras it's shabas av
that that that para captures the shabas
now av There's a lot of famous sukim in
it. You've got some mazon and you've got
uh a reference to el already starting.
We've got a lot of great stuff here. I
want to focus on one of the famous in
this week's para.
And now what does God ask from you?
to fear God,
to walk in all of his ways, to love him
and to serve the Lord your God
with all your heart and with all your
soulm
and his statutes
which I command to you today.
Wow,
what an amazing concept.
A mother says to a kid, "What are you
complaining? What do I ask from you
already? To do all the shopping, to do
all the cooking, to uh to clean up the
house, to take care of your brothers and
sisters, you know, to do that. Is that a
big deal?" Yeah, it's a big deal.
[laughter] Usually when you say, "What
do I ask you already? Take out the
garbage." You know, it's like, "No, what
do I ask from you? to love God with all
your heart, with all your soul, to serve
him, to be to be in awe of him, to keep
all of the mitzvah, do everything. Is
that such a big deal?
Seems like a seems like a strange thing
to say, but we have to put it into a
context. And Rashi puts it into a
context.
Even though you've done all of this,
God's mercy and love is on you.
Nonetheless, this is all I ask.
So,
there's a concept in Christianity called
original sin. It's the most original sin
ever in the whole wide world. Right?
That what? That because
Adam and Eve ate from the tree of
knowledge, you are cursed. You can never
find redemption. And only when God sends
down his son to die for you, uh, can you
be forgiven otherwise you are stained
with sin and there's no way to remove
that. That's called original sin. Uh, we
don't believe that in Judaism. But the
closest you could get to that is the
golden calf, the avive
for the Jewish people. The kazal tell us
that at Hari we reached the level of
kod. We were on the level of in before
they sinned. And had we received those,
those first tablets,
freedom from those tablets, freedom from
death, freedom from the freedom from I
mean that would have been it. We would
have gone into the world the way it was
meant to have been. We would have undone
everything and we built the ael and we
destroyed all of that.
And so that would be our version of
original sin. And that's what the story
was through all of avoids
just focus on doing mitzvah but that's
only one of the categories
having proper
uh loving God being in awe of God. Yeah,
to be fix all of our midos. All of these
are areas that are essential to a Jew.
And that's what Hashem gave us at Hari.
And now even though you built the Ael,
even though you served the golden calf,
even though all of that, Hashem forgave
you. And you can continue to do what I
had originally put you in this world to
do when I gave you the Torah. Because
we're here to be able to live lives of
spiritual greatness. And we don't say,
"Well, after you did this, it'll never
be the same and you'll never be
forgiven." And you know, no, no. You can
now go on to be able to live great and
meaningful lives.
We should be to that in our lives.
Shabas.
