96: High Steaks

hi this is w Lasky and welcome to the rabbi Orlovsky show and whether you are listening with our friends over at Torah anytime comm whenever you watch or listen to your podcast it's so exciting to have you along and you know I was I was thinking that I've been talking about topics there's a couple of podcast things that I mean I had one that I went to the other day my last one really elicited some quite a response in fact evidently unintentionally I made a lot of people feel guilty and so they all felt like they had to write me and say no no we really do appreciate feeling that my intention I was the fishing compliments but but thank you anyway but the I just trying to make a point about you know when we go and ask people for help that was appreciated so I thought maybe for a little change of pace that we just do some straight from October which I haven't done quite in a while now one of the reasons for this is as you may have noticed that I usually gear when I speak on the podcast either to whatever mo aid is coming up whenever holiday I say holiday although some of them are days of tragedy but I try to to put it towards that or I speak on the parsha and since of course we are in different places in its show and and include sleds so I've been trying to avoid that but I have tried to speak about themes that perhaps will apply to the general house of the mid bar in general and that's what I want to do now I want to speak about a an interesting contrast that takes place and and safely buried but remember this from we need to write an essay in high school compare and contrast yeah so we're gonna do one of those now compare and contrast yeah there are two stories two stories that are very similar the first one was back in parties but Lisa yeah the people I'll say I I such a hard life we have Zachary no it's a dog I should know him a triumph enum we forgot the you know we were we remember that fish that we used to have in Egypt Kishu iam the single day mud taste whatever you want kinda strange by the way that they would complain about it but it didn't look like it sometimes things supposed to look like it they came out with a soda called Pepsi clear it tasted exactly like Pepsi but it looked like water and nobody wanted to drink it because didn't look right did another great look for it same thing happened when they came out with green ketchup purple ketchup did look like kitchen things look like the way we expect them to look now sometimes that's because that's the way they appear in nature you know tomatoes are red you expect them to be read in that groove you know not purple and of course the Pepsi tree is is black you don't expect to see it clear you know but but we expect things to look like the way we look for them interestingly enough people assume that bubblegum is pink the default color for bubblegum and in fact is a color called bubblegum pink yeah and the reason is because the guy who invented bubblegum the only the only coloring food coloring he had and the factory at the time was pink that's why he made it pink so let's sort of set it in motion but people expect things to look the way that they do right that's why in the New York area I don't know about every place the New York area March 17th you can go and get bagels that are green bagels and some people are put off by Green Bay cones that's not how they're supposed to look yeah so sometimes you have a great bagel but it's not really edible anymore so you're just adding in food coloring anyway and and Rashi says I couldn't borrow who has to offer a defense of the man the monk is there a gun who ain't no cater bitola like crystal shorter envelope to be talking about do be sure before or but also so Lou goes for your time gonna see the money get in your life hate this for 40 years and now you just about to go there itself and you're never gonna see a piece of money again in your life and you're complaining again about the money it's so interesting that just before they're never going to have it again okay so you can argue there's a certain psychological reality yeah when the trip is almost over that's when the kids start to go crazy the car you know well it's almost done we're almost there I don't think that's what's going on over here yeah this is when you're complaining about the money when you're about to go into each other let me see the money again so he's so guys you Sharon look her synchro's Moussa which I have often said in the past is one of the best mooses forum I have ever seen its collection of shelter which of these is the most important it's impossible to say now all of these important you know there was a big discussion here in Hertz shell I don't know if I told this story I apologize if I did yeah back in the earlier years I'm nothing about in the 40s 50s but I it was either in the 60s or 70s then people raised money and they bought a Rolls Royce and the course of in color could ride back and forth to the fascination and it was an outcry materialistic expression you know who needs a Rolls Royce my waste of zebra money and other people said no it's the Mitzvah of you know being macabre across and makalah and went back and forth I don't know you know and I'm not taking a position I'm just telling the story I know it's enough to get me cancelled in the canceled coaster but luckily nobody can cancel me so my own podcast anyway but you can't fire me I quit anyway but so interestingly enough when they wanted to import this Rolls Royce they they couldn't find there was obviously no rolls-royce dealership so we get somebody else to agree to become the rolls-royce dealer and it's a lot of bureaucratic is the word we use here in this country you know and we really wasn't with him for one rolls-royce but they convinced him it was a first set and he agreed to do it so self-support the end of the story is that Israel decided to use rolls-royce engines in their Jets and they contacted rolls-royce I said no you have to go through our dealer some break-ins ended this multi-million dollar contract for me yeah Israeli government to them so in the contrast of last week that note deed goes unpunished no good deed goes unpunished it shows your good deed gets rewarded yeah but anyway so so is that the most important thing but they're people happy they're listed in our list of consorted when after by some a scholar there are certain certain mitzvahs that that people look at it that's where they that's where they're drawn towards you know so everybody has everybody has something that speaks to them so if Publishing's farm i know people like to publish farm yeah there was a very wealthy Jewish fellow who was in fact the inspiration for the movie Wall Street and somebody had a lot of money and he used to give money to libraries yeah the fishing for my book so he went to somebody went to him try to get money for some kinda occasion and he says he says no I only give some libraries this is why is that because I like the smell of books so if you do you might want to you know if this is where you go you might want to republish the legacy it was more so because as I mentioned I think it is such an important what's the work it's that's my opinion in any event you know it's interesting I've seen people who impersonate me I don't think anyone's ever picked up that phrase in any event and I think I use it a lot and I'm thinking now I'm not really sure I've never tried imitating myself because I do a pretty good girl a ski racer anyhow marry rent so he stays he shares says like this they were sitting in the Midland yeah surrounded by the Ananya kavod drinking from the bay air and eating mine and Mun was as is described left different whole different lifestyle why would I why would I just jump into that unprepared let's see if I can in fact managed to eat enough I can't can i eat regular food and function like a person that's what the Mossad I'm said give us buzzer come his meat but there plenty of meat right but any animal that they Chef today they eat as a carbon slummin let's come on nice and kimonos is like is like mine it says super natural food I want a regular in Parsons for a right so the turret refers to a regular meat as bussert either I have attained their yeah I have an [Music] ongoing it's called discussion with a couple of friends of mine who are foodies and they of course eat their steaks properly which is still alive frankly bleeding in red extra extra rare and I can't even relate to it they even eat some with actual raw meat in it which to me is just one of the most horrific things that keep us imagined it's like having those rare fish sushi it's just just the possible you know I had a student in North America he was teaching English in Japan and his friends took him out to this fancy restaurant and they take a fish and they stick it on a pole it's still alive and they slice it open and it's still moving and you eat it I mean that's very fresh fish yeah he says I I was so gross that I couldn't eat it and as we were leaving the chef said don't ever come back to my restaurant insulting me so so they they like it could cooked very very rare yeah I like it where it's cooked you know where it looks like it's brown I'd be a little red left to it but for the most part Brown you know depending on the cut of meat not actually well done medium well I've managed to eat medium on occasion and we had a discussion once with an Israeli and Israelis and I'm generalizing here they make a roast they don't make like it was like that you know they they boil it up they bought though it's much falling apart you know a friend of mine Sean Katz who is a caterer and he was doing a consonant once and they were like spare no expense step right up and brew it prime rib roasts and he roasted them to adjust you know perfect and and you know you're running a rare to get somebody things take care of and he gets ready to slice the prime rib and he can't find it just looking around and he says to his assistant where's the primer because oh I I started to slice it didn't look like it was cooked so I decided to boil it up some more filled with gravy and all his prime ribs boiling up to them I was loading with him at the time and I remember he just came in a sign telling the story anyway so I say so he says so they said to him the foodies you know they said why would you eat your meat like that you know don't you want it like in like a steak so he says why he says you know he's there cuz so I can spend more time shoeing when it's soft it's easy to eat what am I alaya delight I need to do up my animus watching this exchange and there was no way that they could possibly explain to somebody the joy of having a stake in having to chew it up he's explaining why it's so nice to have a roast that's falling apart that you could just like you know eat it very easily thinking to myself how do you explain the joy of eating a steak adviced us that's what they meant when they said the sativa steak and you know my goodness you know I mean there when I was in America give me a moment just to reflect used to go to America and I used to speak I used to have hundreds and hundreds of people who told me that my towards changed their lives but that was the main thing the main thing is I'm shopping I ran out of Folgers and so my nephew came and brought me two jars of Folgers but I'm already half way through one of them by this rate I have mmm less than a month left or I'll be out of Folgers again I know I'm gonna do I drink fall juice everybody's here drinks taste this choice which is basically ground water I can't I can't taste to it they say bulges as bitter as desired it's not it's not Starbuck Starbuck stays like it's burnt you know and this at least it tastes like you drink a cup of coffee what a fella give a cup of coffee yeah but you know but I would bring a and something's indoors and bring back steaks I have a son a lawyer you know he said I gave him my package of American steaks no he says he said he said eating it he says it was so delicious I started to cry but today there was a tailor but I said when I was going to buy my family pack of rib steaks they had this thing called cowboy steaks but this is enough meat when I went again when I used to travel you know in the old days so I would at times when I had enough points build-up I would be able to take one of my kids come with my kids or or a couple with me of America you know so I took one of my one of my married couples to me and when should we win it was in February and I had a speaking gig in Miami so we went down to Florida and well they were just blown away but Miami in the in the in the width of time ah my wine says you know he get this rebel used to come down to Miami you know for the the window he says we had a Fabrice and we're learning we're learning in my backyard under the spreading grapefruit tree and he says to me you know this is goalless but as goalless goes it's not so bad I had to be very careful because they used to do my memory wine impersonation and there were times I couldn't get out of it I would sit here for weeks at a time so I'm sure you understand what I'm referring to some people in this room were old enough to remember back I forget it but there yeah so so we went out to the restaurant blessed for it Frank if I later forego and it was basically steak house you know and they all had these like ignore mistakes I can't eat like that I'm an old man know have a little boiled chicken and some prune juice you know and I'm done you know they were having mixed drinks you know they have a guy there with mixing of drinks and big big steak in other words can I can I eat verse at IVA and still maintain a level spirituality now what you learned from them is Adam is no they were not able to it was very hard that's one of the things that terrified them when the mariahlynn came back and said you can't handle this it's because you are not going to be able to handle this lifestyle this requires a better person on you today with it to be able to eat the satire and to be able to maintain it the story with the satmar rebbe but he never slept in ever in ever ate apparently yeah yeah curcumin netsuke was going down to Miami that seems to be a theme here today whoever density was going down to Miami and and his the such Barabbas is listen I am an apartment there you could use my apartment I was like a hotel in five medicine soda Yakima comes down and as the cleaning lady I mean you know erase what she was doing in the room yeah and so of course he's the pumpkin mousse or Nick you know thank you so much for making the room so clean you know she says don't thank me see that bed I haven't touching in weeks I don't know where that other guy who was here slept but he never slept here sad my rabbit didn't sleep the guy by tells the tell the rabbits into to send in the rivers lunch so the boy says to the Rebbetzin the rubber asks for his lunch so she said Marian all the years are married for him he never once asked for food if I didn't give it to me wouldn't eat it all so when the guy in used to eat because I used to bread because I use a kebaya whatever it was you know soaked in water and he threw it down this basically is a shouldn't have to taste it so that he wouldn't have to deal with food but there are obviously this is is a kedusha in food Dashami says you who they used to save up his money and buy every new fruit that came out because the timing of the payrolls shows Tommy tire shop is young did only Shabbos are negatives we would have the the finest food enjoy it yeah it'll much madam shim untaek him says bearish Hashanah it it could meet the drink good wine I'm the oh my ding and maintain that level of kedusha yeah so challenging challenging it's easy you know if you if you keep yourself in a safe place I know that's a term that came in since Trump was was elected we need safe safe places safe zones well we don't have anybody challenge us what we think when we experience I wanted to go to Orlando for Pesach I'm pretty sure I told the story already so so we drove down a van of supplies it turned out that everything that I drove down I could avoid down there and some Florida better don't deliver to the house have to drive down all these things but okay yeah but we drove down and we went from New York down to Florida that's a long corridor you have to get down and we ate a dinner in Baltimore because we were supposed to leave it ten o'clock in the morning and obviously give you an idea what time we left we got to Baltimore for supper and remember of the participants were like you know okay let's let's just stay here for the night already I know I had to be because my mother was coming in and I wanted to get the house ready you know so so my son-in-law he stole mayor or a BA those families originally from Georgia he speaks this language everybody from down there is automatically a truck 10-4 good buddy so I look at him so he says we'll just drive you know we'll get a couple of hours under her belt maples stop at Richmond or something and I mean at least we'll get started it was okay so we'll get onto the van he starts to drive it and I looked at my go and so of course everybody falls asleep man and he's just trucking don't Carolina my son wakes up and he's like so we stopped at a motel someplace in North Carolina I'm not sure where I think it was the town of Mayberry and we spent the night I'm gonna take a shower and slept in a bed now this this was like this wasn't like a motel six this is like a motel for three you know but everyone was like thrilled was like the best night sleep [Laughter] yeah the morning got back in the road this was great because I knew that if we got stopped by a cop you know you show me speaks the language you know how's it going yeah I'm just Chuck BAM do to Florida got a bunch of G's here I'm transport anyway so we're going down and we're hungry and someone looked up online incur shipping and it said from Silver Spring till Florida is a kosher desert so you stop in someplace and what do you buy you buy junk junk junk junk junk it's all there is can't sit down have any real food you know so I remember I think it at the beginning of it we remember we were first getting on the road we we stopped at a Target or Walmart and when supermarket section was fruits and vegetables and things it's like the only nutrition we had yeah so so to be able to eat the condition oh good to be able to have that that sense of what I'm having is kadosh and maintain the same level of the Munn and everything that I eat that's what they found frightening and that's the challenge challenges to be able to live as spiritual people in a physical world and that's what they were afraid of before they went to Edsel time says a desire to share that's why they complain about the Mun because they like you haven't you've been babying me giving me special spiritual food can I eat regular food am i up to salads yeah so that is our challenge as we go through life to live the spiritual life in a physical world today they have bus at Ava never have meat meat meat byproducts nothing with meat meat byproducts and I know if anybody's coming from Israel from America the Israel you want to bring us some American steaks or American frankfurters they just do them different there I don't know why I moved here 32 years ago and twice in my chicken Franks I found a feather twice everyone knows that they do not make frankfurters and salami head of the best guts but at least in America they have the dca to grind it up first there you get big chunks those you have a salami the whole things just a hoof but anyway those uh these are these are some of the delights that he's again he's get my for just coffee and I would get like Troy Chinese noodles put my chicken soup because that's how I grew up there's again alphabet noodles I know oodles and noodles why they taste better when they're shaped like letters I don't know why I can't tell you do I have to spell it out for you any event so uh just just just keep me mine dig next time you having a frankfurter on a regular roll we don't know frankfurter Rozier either it made him wince and angels I got room you know mustard sour crab anyway I'm digressing I'm talking about those people who eat Buster tell you about them you know of course
