hi this is David Alaska and welcome to
the special Pesach program of the raboia
last issue this is the obviously the
small audience can't have more than two
people in the same room anyone in itself
so so it's one person was clapping next
time what will look like it's the
special Pesach program of the River
Alaska show you know this is very very
special Pesach because we're we're in
lockdown and there are a lot of young
people going to be making their first
Seder not by choice yeah there are some
older people who being very careful not
to be exposed which is of course
reasonable and so there are certain
parents disinviting their children not
that they haven't waited for this for
many years an excuse I would love to
have you and the kids but but so so I
thought yet this year because I just I
just ran through a little bit of last
year's basic program I was so incredibly
impressed by how well I did it yeah then
I don't think there's really much more
for me to have to say yeah so I got to
focus on something very specific this
your especially because they're gonna be
people who are gonna be running their
own Seder and I thought what I would do
is try to give you some good insights
now we had one last year and I noticed
that I really only focused on one aspect
so I I'm not going to do actual
I'd like to do something a little bigger
than just luck but you know I
always say that the most important thing
yeah everybody has to see themselves as
if they came enemas right which means
that it has to be a message that is
relevant to where we are in life and who
we are as people
and to the participants and the Gemara
tells us that the youngest child asks
the Manish tanner
if you don't have a child then the wife
asks the husband if you by yourself you
ask the questions to yourself
so it's interesting at the end of the
day we have to answer all questions of
the same we have to make it something
that's going to be relevant not just for
the participants but also for ourselves
and specifically in in these times when
there are communities and biosocial
Incheon Mase where people have suffered
so many terrible terrible tragedies it's
it's important for us to be able to take
the basic message and as best as we can
make it meaningful for us so I would
like to actually start the Haggadah
and last year I in the podcast that was
entitled her go to insights I basically
spoke about the Kadesh of her thoughts I
want to now move forward yeah so the
first thing we do is after we break the
middle matzah and we start the Seder we
lift up the matzah and we say laughs
mama son of a are they me try again
co-defensive a gang called it sir if you
save a year's resolution
I showed up they were shown above an
area that was the timber for these this
is the the way he used to say it is the
bread of affliction this is the bread of
affliction a lot of Manya
the whole apanasana biorhythms right
there our forefathers ate in Egypt Oh
who are hungry come and eat who need to
make Pesach come and make paisa now we
are here next year we'll be internet
shell now we are slaves next year we
will be free and this is a very strange
paragraph because you know is it dimbo
confess us if you want to be part of the
curtain pass out you have to join before
the schita before the kerbin is offered
you can't look in Pesach night and say
oh my gosh I forgot to take care of
being in the Camorra can I join us
you can't you had to be there when the
carbon was brought to be shifted and you
can't suddenly wake up later and say oh
I got left now could I join now
so what do you mean well who a need come
and make this up and we say anybody was
hungry come in and eat oh we already met
kiddush so that's kind of strange
wouldn't you inviting the guests before
kiddush why would you be doing it now
yeah so this is the matzah that we ate
in Egypt because there is a duality to
the matzah there is the matzah from
Egypt and there is the matzah that we
baked after we came out of Egypt and we
say they've read did not have a chance
to rise and they baked it as much as
when they got there
those are two different monsters and
that's why when it comes to gambling I'm
Aaron it says monsters ooh' and the
apartment house says matzo zoos are no
Oakland this matzo because we ate matzo
in Egypt the night before so you have to
understand about a Pesach Seder
there's let's talk about what the minds
with the pesos say it was supposed to be
you brought your car professor in the
Mesa McNish and the cabeza was to be
eaten by a labyrinth by a group of
people who are joining together you want
the group to finish the compass off
because anything is left over becomes
noise are and you have to burn it and
you don't want that to happen to the
Corbett's you wanna make sure you eat it
but because it's celebrating the freedom
and the redemption you can have the
Confessor as your main course we sitting
down and eating ah I'm so hungry
there's that so therefore it's sort of
like dessert it was a dessert the
afikomen yeah was the the matzah that we
eat at the end of the state of the
afikomen is safer to the Confessor yeah
at the end and everyone got a COS eius
size of an olive of the meat the idea
was to make sure that everyone ate it
after they were already full
and you wanted the people to be able to
finish it so the the Corbin has to be
less than a year old so a sheep or a
goat that's less than a year old I asked
somebody I don't know if he knows but he
but he certainly sounded authoritative
how many cos a sim can you get to a less
than one year old sheep or goat he
estimated 50 cos Aysen so since you want
everybody to finish it and was going to
just either cause ice of it because
they're gonna fill it beforehand
so that means that every hapara was
phone I need 50 people how many Corden
pass after they bring the Camaro says
that what year they did account and
there was 1.2 million carbon Pesa that
were brought assuming it was on 50
people to a carbon let's say the guy was
wrong and it was it was less you talking
between 30 and 50 million people who
were bringing the carbon Pesa
30 to 50 million people and you had to
eat it within the walls of the old city
and you couldn't be upstairs you had to
be downstairs the next time you complain
about your Seder being crowded just
think about the fact that 50 million
people were eating their curtain
pheasant was having a seder
inside of the walls of the old city must
have been unbelievable yeah every city
was on top of each other so what was the
Seder obviously the focus was the
curtain Pesach which was on the table in
Matz's Aurora blue you will eat it with
Madson barovik Mattson mara were the
subsidiaries to the to the curtain
passer they came along with it and
that's why Hillel felt that since the
matzo and Mara are coming with the
cabeza he would take the roast lamb put
it in the matzo with Nomura and put it
together now if you use the matzo that
we have today so you know when you do
koi riffin you just take the lettuce in
the mat see you think about the old
thing crumbles on you you picking it off
of you and since it's not the same but
in the old days what was matzah the the
gomorrah gives you the recipe you take
flour and or water you mix it up as a
dough you slap it on the side of the
tunnel and then you peel it off today we
call that a lava mine h10 or yeah they
call it whatever it's one of those big
round like pizza types of bread
so now you understand hello made a
little more sense you take one of these
you put in the roasted lamb you put in
the lettuce you roll it up you dip it in
the Carozza s
he invented trauma that's where Shauna
came from it was Hilla and then you
would lean back on your couch because
you know you see people trying to do her
say boner I didn't share without any
arms you know they had a couch then
leaned back on the couch they had a
glass of warm wine because they were
their wine was concentrated they had in
three parts of warm water - it started
up so you lean back on their couch with
their shwarma and they have warm wine
this is to be a much better religion and
that's why one of the four questions was
during the year we can eat our our meat
boiled or roasted or pickled or you know
how we wanted faith and now we only eat
it sleep because the Confessor was the
center of everything everybody was
focused in the crib and everyone had to
be photographer all right everyone had
to go and get Fritz with the may haunt
us a week beforehand everyone had to go
to the mikveh everyone had to yeah
you're sitting there be conducive attire
right inside the walls of eurasia life
with your carbon you can imagine that
was that must have been a mind-blowing
experience that was a seder asks
some sign from why is this in an Aramaic
why are we writing this in Aramaic and
he says because this was obviously added
in later after the Corbin and the first
thing we say when we start our Seder
we've already made kiddush we've already
sat down we start off by saying the
following this is a ke lu Seder this is
a shadow of a real Seder you know why
don't have any confessor so anybody who
wants could come in and join right now
because these all bets are off yeah and
that's what we say now we hear it next
year will be and it's found that were
slaves next year we'll be free because
that's the that's the bottom line that's
what we try to give a cross if you will
a virtual Seder
yeah so that we should know that this
this is not the real Satyam that we're
supposed to be shooting and then we do
the - kinda like I say if you have a
little kid a little kid I'll say it if
not I'm an only kid the only kid I'll
say if not the wife asks the husband not
then the person says it to themselves
however your Seder is working - 10 Li
letters every cordless there's only one
question why is this night different
than all the nights all of the questions
are there to point out a contradiction
the contradiction is I know we have
happy holidays with Luis we have circus
we've porn I know we have said holidays
- Shabazz shavasana Tamas what's today
as today a happy day or is it a sad day
well I see we're eating matzah which is
lemon laugh Munya it's poor poor bread
better suffering
I say we eating murder which is bitter
that tells me that this is a sad day and
then I see we're dipping and we're
reclining like wealthy people what is
today is today a happy day or a sad day
why is this night different than all the
nights why can't I make this into a
night that I can understand and that's
the question the question is the
contradictions of the Seder night on the
one hand it looks like we're being
slaves and the other hand it looks like
we're being three people so which one is
it
and the answer we give is Ovid mi n
olaparib erm it's Ryan
Ovid mi you know our you know the
perimeter is right
[Applause]
my mother borrow them it's ryeom we were
slaves to pyro and Egypt you'll see I
know I shovel Academy showed me and the
car was rented to you and God took us
out that's the answer
I remember a bad
Moshe Shapiro said clearly that the
current peso has a commentator with
thanking God that he took us out yeah
from Egypt and and that's why when the
kid says she macaw La La's I don't swim
car mate so Marcela
all the night sweet comments so the way
we usually read that is or than ite or
comments or matzah but you could read it
as all the nights we limits and matzah
when do we accomplish some answers only
one time Anna Corbin Tatum you bring 40
breads 30 of them are matzah and 10 of
them are comments so he's saying
obviously this is a corporate either so
how come we don't have any hummus with
it
I remember going
so somebody said to emotional it's
equipment re there why are there 40
Matz's don't make sure give him a look
and we all ducked because we understood
promotion meant is it's conceptually a
carbon tight that not that it's actually
a carbon toy dough yet but I guess he
appreciated that this was the fellow
doing the best that we could with the
skills that he had so he says cold dip
Vanier said big a foul Russian que vocês
40 Roger was very quick he would come up
with these things very quickly yeah I
remember once said to him you know you
should always have milk with coffee and
before you dominate right for shoppers
here milk and coffee why cuz just go to
the mikveh beforehand and in Yiddish
coffee is cover and her love is 40 so it
equals mikvah
so much it says you don't need milk you
can just put it in a glass it also
equals 40 anyway so he was very quick
yeah but it's conceptually a Corbin
tighter
what's a Corbin tighter Ackerman tell
you there is after you find yourself in
a life-threatening situation you cross
the sea and again we take it for granted
today that the boat will come across you
have no idea how many shipwrecks they
have been throughout history you cross
the desert you you were sick you get
better you get out of jail after any of
these things you would bring in Corbin
take them thank a coach borough today we
don't have the carbon we still have the
concept that say I'd be able sue this a
dog to celebrate after I died I got
better but two major doctors told me I
was supposed to be dead I'm and I had my
heart attack and apparently a coach
brought would they want me so he sent me
back so a of course on the anniversary
since I've done that as dramatic as my
brother my brother who was shot yeah a
disgruntled employee shot him he turned
his head so instead of the bullet going
into his head it just shot off the tip
of his nose and and one went through his
arm it could have gone right to his
heart so he makes a pseudo I was on her
show Arama and he credits the fact that
he was in Shore and he was beating the
house shyness to beat the didn't down
that's the reason that he survives but
he makes a suicide no every year in Iran
but yeah
so the first year when he first came
back from from the hospital and he made
his first soon as I got so he asked me
to speak somebody said to me you know
I've never been to one of these do you
bring a gift I said you know like a
bulletproof vest
you know man oh yeah
anyway I went to speak a bit as soon as
I said uh and he was wearing a bandage
on his nose it was one guy he was giving
out bandages everybody put on their nose
you know in sympathy yeah recognition
but but in any event let the speak this
is ID uh and I said you know there's an
obvious contradiction in the
super-psycho and that is that with
thanking for a Cause berroco for the
fact that after I became deathly ill I
got better
thanks for nothing like a guy who throws
somebody love of a bridge that jumps in
afterwards to save them you know so what
do you want me to do thank you for
saving me after you're the one who threw
me in you made me sick you put me into
this situation then you got better screw
you better you should have done this to
me in the first place
bismillah soda which is the feeling we
would say when we brought carbon tumin
yeah into a session basilica Bowl the
front of bernando come to him with
singing with happiness
EW Kia sham hoola Kim huis on ooh
he made us ve'lo in math new and not us
now there's a Korean exceed over here
that means it's red one way and it's
pronounced another way below I not know
we belong to him but how its that's how
you pronounce it but below anak knew and
not us I'm very strange yeah a Korean
exceed but they both sounds exactly the
same
I don't know what the difference is
between low with the llama Dalits and
hilum and a laminate of bugs yeah what's
what's the difference it both sound the
deafness a
see read it as Dookie I generally care
my sham is God who I saw no he made us
fellow enough whom we belong to him oh
you can read it as a sham boiler Kim he
made us below enough to indict us so
which one is it
yeah so the answer is
and all depends depends where you're
holding in life whether you read it as
low we belong to him were low and not us
so why everybody had a famous story as
guy comes to him and he says you know
he's encouraging him to come and spend a
few weeks learning initially but he says
rabbi I don't have to learn I
already have a great relationship with
God he says you do he says yet God does
miracles for me he said he does he says
yeah this is what what do you mean one
time I was driving my motorcycle on his
Mountain Road and it was very narrow and
overs in the truck comes swinging around
and ran me off the room and I fell off
the side of the mountain and I'd land it
among rocks and I had nothing broken I'd
the wind knocked out of me but that was
it and I was fine
God does miracles for me so no I said to
him
that's unbelievable I have only one
question who pushed you off the mountain
if you believe that God saved you you
have to believe that God arranged for
you to be pushed off the mountain it's
does that it's not to God's Deluca a
sham who look him
Hashem me the Soraka man who alo Kim is
also the meters at did we only have one
God the same God who pushed you off the
mountain is the same one who
miraculously saved you kind of tell
he was once in a cab and the guy lost
control and he headed to the side of the
mountain and the front wheels went over
the side before he was able to stop the
crap and he turned the kind of telling
me since you see God does miracles for
me and he says I took out a piece of
paper I wrote down Weinberg phone number
and I handed him and said this man wants
to ask you a question
hey that means that I coach burro who
pushed you off the mountain and and
saved you and now you want me to say
thank you so the answer is if you as I
shared a similar ball in front of
redundant be happy when your Judaism and
if you're not happy so I'm going to put
you in a situation where you're going to
be in trouble and you're going to come
looking for me
so no Heiberg said to this person is why
would God push you off the mountain and
then save you I think he's trying to get
your attention I think he's trying to
tell you something I think he wants you
to spend a few weeks learning in ushiro
but the current day there is telling us
that when we bring to be quorum we make
a little speech and that's the speech
that is at the second half of of the hug
onto the floor sukham bet wiedersehen
and basically what we're saying is we
went down to Egypt and we became a great
nation and then we started to assimilate
and then the Egyptians did evil to us
and then our Shem took us out and saved
us those are the four cooking with our
show the end of that little speech is
and the broader starts well and now I'm
bringing you my first fruits and I bring
it with happiness and I celebrate
because if we're happy being Jews and
we're happy doing what we're supposed to
be doing there's no problem I saw some
worked on a story I apologize I forgot
who broke down about the rebel rebelling
Mela and his brother at the river
position and the tool that were in
prison and they wanted to dive in and
they realize they couldn't dive in
because the slop pail which was their
version of a toilet yeah
the slop pail was there and they
couldn't dive because it was there the
remember really love starts crying in
ribs Usha but finest position traditions
are you crying we're doing a booty
session if a Karishma rojulu says that
we can't dive in because of the slob
bail then by not vomiting we're doing
resolution the person was bringing this
to explain the fact that we can't dive
up and yon him now so he says the slob
hill is letting us to rest on a sham
let's celebrate
I don't know the exact - and all the
in the other cells they caught on
it was mentally the guards come and see
what's going on here you know so don't
say I don't know the Jews are singing
because they have a slop so yeah then
I'm gonna take it away they think it
hasn't in they look at each other they
go okay now let's David because whatever
comes away if you're happy you're happy
your vote is a sham you don't need
anything else if you're not happy coach
Michael has to remind you
who asano the low anak knew and that us
we're not God cuz bara who is God we
think we know better we think how we're
supposed to do things
oh yeah life stuff huh filled with
challenges when something happens it's
if a cutter on foot throws you up the
mountain and then miraculously saves you
he's trying to tell you the low enough
that with another it's not us but if we
understand below and after when we
belong Decker's vertical that we don't
need everything else
Hashem lilyc in everything everything
makes sense and so therefore when
something happens we're obligated to try
to figure out why it happens and what
the meaning of it is for us on a
personal level the Kornberg used to say
the Gomorrah says that just before baby
is born the Moloch hits him right over
here and he forgets all stomach in the
womb he's taught all of the Torah and
when he comes out the mouth hit somebody
forgets him so he says what's the
purpose of teaching the baby all the
Torah and then having him forget it it's
to teach you that all of life is
remembering the truth searching for the
truth that you're you know inside
so what's truthful Christianity Islam
Buddhism secular humanism science what's
what is the truth
so now says is to teach you that when
you start looking for the truth the
first place you should look is right
under your nose
and when I said it my brother's suicide
dog was and maybe if you can't see it
because your nose is so big gun is to
shoot up a piece of it wow that was an
extremely poor taste but you know but
the point remains the same a good boy
who puts us through things so that we
can then stop and say okay God you know
two doctors told me I was supposed to be
dead and I could rebel kept me alive and
old every day that I wake up is I'm
living on borrowed time it's extra time
now big boy I forgot the coronavirus are
you worried because I'm over 60 and I'd
I'd be easily a heart disease you know
sign high risk and I said if God wanted
to thank me he would have taken me
already he had the chance
obviously doesn't want me it was just my
brother's yard site he died a young man
I said young man he was was over sixty
but but though that's young my mother
made it to 89 so my mother sitting Shiva
for her son and everybody would come in
she there's the same question why why
did God take him I said to God take me
I'm old yeah my life is over take me
he's a young man he has children to
marry off white why God what did you
take him now what do you answer a mother
who's lost a child like that elderly
woman who's not well so I couldn't fly
because I was after my operation so I
called them to come over my mother on
the phone
and she said to me why did God take him
why didn't God take me I said God
doesn't want you you're an old cranky
lady my brother Jay he was a lot of fun
[Laughter]
that's the first thing anybody said that
makes any sense
it was the end she was in a lot of pain
she's 89 she was really suffering
terribly and she she told whatever
visitors I'm trying not to be so cranky
so maybe God will pay ya
but you know friend of mine it was the
terrorist attack of Ben Yehuda and he
had pieces of shrapnel and his skin that
they couldn't get out and somebody has
doesn't hurt and he says no but it gets
cold I feel like getting cold inside of
me so so he says so you're gonna go back
home and he says no every bullet has a
name on it yeah nothing is random
because you're Brock one knows who you
are what's gonna happen yeah so so the
kerbin Pesa yeah as we sit down to the
Seder we asked to manage to know is this
a happy day was the same thing and the
answer is both I'm with him I you know
love Ireland Australia we were slaves
tomorrow and God took us out but it's
not that we happen to be in bad
situation it was just bad luck that we
were slaves
cuz burrow home arranged for that to
happen because that's what we needed to
happen if we didn't need it it wouldn't
have happened we suffered what we
suffered because we had to
mr. Smith says and the gomorian Broncos
which says you should never favor one of
your children because of the money that
was spent buying Joseph a nicer coat as
Miguel go we had them going down to the
stripe Agron shops and toys resist what
do you mean we already knew from the
visitor song we were gonna go down to
Egypt see he says the winter been so bad
if it didn't come about through Cinna
didn't come about through hatred it went
there in something we got what we needed
to get in order to become the people we
had to become we don't always like the
way it plays out but it's not bad luck
then just happen to be amazing amazing
amazing concept so when we sit down to
the Seder yes there are contradictions
there's sad parts and happy parts
because we understand that the sad parts
didn't happen on their own when you
bring a curb and toy though you don't
say oh I just have to be in a bad
situation
I wonder if Monty Berger say you know
it's a comic book reference you know how
much I enjoyed those he said he says
people have the impression you know that
Jimmy Olsen finds himself in trouble and
he had this little button he would push
on his watch and Superman would hear and
he'd fly in and save the day
that's where the control is to just bad
luck we had found ourselves in trouble
no
baroque was thus able to push through
off the mountain is the same one who
saved you
things don't happen by themselves it's
not just by chance
Homer Simpson I remember reading quotes
once and a bathroom Billy reader they
juxtapose quotes from Homer the the
Greek and an Homer Simpson and it was
interesting how many times they overlap
but he had this one quote where he said
I had never been a religious man but if
you're up there
save me Superman I see how it works I'm
with him a hero love Aramis Ryan and we
are remembering that and we're
celebrating that and then a Shem took us
out and saved us and that's the that's
the first idea that I wanted to focus on
when we come to the Seder that the Seder
has a certain melancholy to it you eat
an egg at the Seder why because the same
day of the week that the Seder comes out
is also the same day the week that
Tishman comes out fishermen will be a
Wednesday night Thursday this so
[Music]
it's not just acute coincidence it's
because the tissue bar when we look at
the carbon
above it says the machine will be born
and tissue buff it will turn around and
become a day of similar it's gonna
change around eyelid in Maggie knew it
was horrific beings and and starving and
children being used as bricks and
slaughtered for their blood and what a
terrible to have experienced and we
understand at the end that all that was
a necessary phase for us to become the
people who were supposed to become
otherwise it wouldn't have happened it
wasn't bad luck that's the first idea I
wanted to bring across we will talk more
about face up and be special hey so I
guess that's it for this week if you
want to find out more of them to show
