hi I'm Devin alaskey and welcome to the
special permission of the rabbi Alaska
show and when you're watching a tour any
time however you watch you listen to
your podcast we are so excited to have
you along as we approach the Purim
holiday which is going to be a very busy
week for a lot of people for the Deaf
yogi people we of course making a sim on
the Christmas after Broncos for a lot of
people that will be finishing their deaf
yummy for another seven and a half years
when they'll once again learn massages
Broncos boss Shabbos blah Manuka this is
my certain certain sectors for us of
course mr. sham it should go well but on
what is per day we will be making a bris
for a new grandson who is just born and
wash em sin cos and sin cos and of
course there will be perm guess we
should mention that one as well and for
those of us who live in New Rochelle I
am Shushan Purim and I have to tell you
that when you live in you shall I'm and
I'm living here 32 years your
perspective changes dramatically because
to to us that is perm in fact you don't
even realize perms going on for the rest
of the world what is porn for everybody
for us is nothing yeah it's just it's a
it's a much better day because I used to
remember when I lived in America you
would go from tiniest Esther straight
into the Megillah reading and you were
hungry and yet a headache it was hard to
concentrate yeah and now you have a day
you'll have to get ready for sure she'll
go from honest and good Magilla like a
mensch
of course in america they had the
shoeshine program as a day to be able to
recover from the you know the ordeal of
for him and we don't have that but but
that's okay we don't have a sundae
either over here so as
uh-oh John used to refer to is the
Shabbos Shamy
shall goalies so everything's a
trade-off as my father used to say all
right before you afterwards but it
certainly means the busy week filled
with a lot of a lot of excitement in the
year and in order of this I have decided
to put on my Donald Trump toy and that
is the theme for today I don't always
have a theme I decide the truth my
producer usually makes up the main but
I'm giving you the name for today and
that is make purim great again
[Applause]
pointing at people random there's a TV
show that I have not seen but I've heard
people quote I think it's called Adam
ruins everything
I think this was basically this guy goes
and shows you all kinds of things that
you thought about it and you believed
and stuff and he shows you how the whole
thing is a mistake so the alternative
title for this is robbery illowsky ruins
everything so I want to talk about I
want to talk about Ferb
I want to tell a story that I may have
told you already but but it definitely
bears repetition one of my daughter's
was getting married
and the other side asked are you gonna
put out liquor for the boys and I said
well I'll definitely buy a bottle that
I'll keep by my side for my friends who
come to the casa de and give them a look
hi him but why would I want to just
apply a bunch of issue about him with
alcohol doesn't seem like that's the
best way to go and he said to me no no
the father's like to do this because
then the boys dance more Leba dick and I
said if my future son-in-law doesn't
have any friends who want to dance and
celebrate at his Casa unless they're
drunk tell them not to come so the boys
brought their own bottles but I remember
was something that hit me over there and
I got very upset and I told this over to
my son Yakov who in fact was on my last
Purim podcast and America and he said to
me Abba you don't get it and he's right
I don't get it I'm the first one to
admit it I don't get it the the world
has changed and I have not changed along
with it so I probably mentioned this
during my seminary series I don't know
if I did or not but he said three rules
in my class there's no talking there's
no cellphones and there's no gumshoe
and girls would break these rules at
their peril because I can be extremely
unpleasant when I want to I know that's
hard to believe because I'm such a
wonderful person but you know you can
get upset sometimes because I only have
three rules and I have a different rule
I have a rule that once you've been
assigned in for attendance you can go
outside I don't care if you come to the
rest of the class I don't care if you go
to sleep I prefer you not snore but you
know I just have three rules when you're
in my class make sure your cell phone is
switched off because when it rings it's
very disturbing to other people don't
talk because it's disturbing to other
people and don't chew gum sounds girls
would always asked about the gum chewing
you know but what's what's with a gum
tree and I said the Queen of England
doesn't chew gum anybody whose hardship
doesn't chew gum you know you'll never
see them doing something like that and
your crush if you don't know it yet but
in this room you're very Kruschev and I
expect you to live up to my expectations
and most of the time in the close to 20
years that I was doing it there were
very few exceptions and it's such an
insane thing because I always felt like
because I said a certain standard you
know people people rose up to it in fact
one time we got a memo to read to the
girls and I said I'll read this even
though I don't know what they're talking
about but I was asked to read it
no no texting during class don't talk
during class know there are all kinds of
things that I said I'll read this and
I'll give you a paratha that the other
teachers should see you as I do and it
was interesting that in my class the
girls understood that there was a
certain standard and they they kept up
that standard
I left seminary years ago it was after
my heart attack and but my daughter was
still teaching still continues to teach
the seminars and she says to me Abba you
would not be able to handle it today it
would get you crazy
because the world has declined and
people know this yeshivas that used to
have a particular standard they took be
students they had to switch to a
students just to stay where they were
because everything is changing the world
is changing and as I always say the
world has changed and I have not changed
along with it
I still share the thoughts and the
feelings that I got from my parents and
from my rib a him and the values that I
always believed were eternal values
which are not anymore they're not all
really an example I'm sure I brought
this example before but it bears
repetition all of the books I'm finna
are today worthless because all the
books are kind of are based on the basic
principle that I am the parent you're
the child I tell you what to do so now
the books are kind of will tell you how
to say it
what to say etc but the underlying
assumption is going when you talk to a
kid today the kid says no and you're
like didn't you get the memo you know
I'm the father you're the child this is
no sorry and you can't make me
let's face it most of parenting and
education is a bluff you all know that a
teacher says don't push me because you
don't want to see what I'm gonna do
that's true neither does eat sugars they
really have no idea my daughter who
later - in seminary you know when she
was younger she still this joke you know
this big monster comes he says do you
wanna see what I can do with my big
hairy hand in my big hairy lips like no
no go away he comes close and says you
want to see what I can do with my big
area head and my big hairy lips he's
like no no please you know and it comes
over loud you get the idea and for he
goes okay he goes
but you know there's a certain editor
that we're building things up into it
into a pinion it's a big problem don't
make me come down there or what look I
just don't feel like walking down there
there's an old pasta dish a joke story I
don't know what it is I might be hearing
the name I'm terrible with names I
forget them but he he comes into an end
and he says he says I was like a room
for the night
says he everybody says no he says he
can't stay here says don't make me do
what my father did I was like oh my gosh
you know so he goes into the room many
and he says how dinner now we're good
but you don't have any money don't make
me do it my father dead so they bring
him a meal he eats it goes to his room
and it gets up in the morning and he
says where's breakfast like but sir you
haven't paid for it
don't make me do what my father did so
okay they bring him breakfast he
finishes he gets ready to leave he goes
just tell me what did your father do it
slept on the street and I'm hungry but
it sounds a lot more dramatic yeah so um
so when I was talking about this you
know in the drinking so my son says
miyabi you don't get it the world has
changed the world has changed and it's
true about everything I'm married 37
years one of the most poignant moments
of my life was when I went to the
bedecking I was being danced down with
my father my father-in-law surrounded by
friends yeah and we're dancing down the
band is playing I had a really
exceptional band yeah and my father who
is very hard to impress I don't know if
I've ever brought that across he said I
never saw a band like this that never
took a break they were playing the whole
time the whole time anyway
see going down to the bedecking and
there's something so poignant
so beautiful so special about it yeah
today people go down I've seen this and
they put rows they do a little dance why
because the moment of the Baddeck in
itself is not meaningful enough I have
to create something artificial in order
to be able to make it meaningful because
the thing itself has lost its meaning so
I believe this particular area is
nowhere as clear as when it comes to
perm and I'll explain to you what I mean
perm used to be but I took the people
more in my age group but I always used
this line I said you remember when perm
was fun and everybody laughs because
they know there was a time when perm is
fun
I don't know that I can give a date to
when it died but it definitely died at
some point but it used to be fun yeah
people would place put on a clown wig or
red nose and you shall I make they buy
these Turkish Fez that they put on their
head they wear sometimes you could put
on a funny toy you know
okay so then they were the people would
you know put on the the full gorilla
suit you know I mean you know those are
the exceptions you know and people would
drink they would drink okay two times
did get a little tipsy you know one guy
in the Shiva would get really drunk and
everybody would you know he was an idiot
he made an idiot out of himself and
everybody had fun at his expense frankly
do you mean you know what it was like
wow that guy's so cool look how wasted
he is yeah and and they were you know
drinking people used to make shots -
there were no themes anybody themes I
don't think we had cellophane we used to
make hamantaschen
and get a little bottle of wine but if
he's fruit maybe I know what people who
did all of a more elaborate you know I
mean they'd make a kugel they take a
challah
you know and you'd said the little thing
some people would throw it a little cute
thing here and there and you'd go to the
Megillah reading kid's head Greiger's
those little party crackers I go Greg
Greg Greg Greg Greg Greg Greg you know
and they say come on you know those
would you know back in the flow of it
and then we go on you get through the
crea relatively unscathed and he said
dad you have a serger which was
essentially a shot to sue that maybe I
had more family and it's something very
special
now for me it's particularly poignant
because I grew up out in Long Island as
I mentioned I did not come from a shomer
Shabbos family I got from when I was 12
and and I had a Rebbe Yaakov Wales at
South who invited the whole class over
his house for a perm student in a
neighborhood I'd never heard of before
being a young man from Long Island
called Borough Park and so my friend's
father agreed to drive us in and he took
us to sensual to to hear the Megillah
and then we drove and I was astounded
astounded because when Jews from
Brooklyn like my father moved out to
Long Island there wasn't enough room in
the car full of the holidays so Pesach
Pesach made it or should even keep her
made it that's about it Purim didn't
make it didn't make the cut
no neither did
the truth
my father kept circus but but most
people did not yeah and and so porn was
like and I don't folks anything like it
remember they were from school as far as
I could remember
so we got a bar fight and suddenly I
come here and it's a young TIFF kids are
walking around and costumes people are
delivering shuttle come on us I mean I
remember we've read about this in our
little reader in school but I never saw
it before it was something astounding in
every house was making a sudha it was
like before young TIF people were
cooking
everything's so exciting we sat by a red
B's table he starts giving us wine that
we never drink wine you know you know
his vibe
he took us outside to dance in the
street you know it was it was for sure a
life-changing event for me one of the
most dramatic moments of my life I would
have to say was was that first poem that
I really kept and I've always tried to
keep that up for myself now obviously
when you know I I was in you shiva's it
was a whole different experience because
I'd have my my buckram of my house or
would I was an NCS wired her menses why
is it one my house we'd have a perm
sudha but it was basically again a fun
meal people laughing people talking
etcetera what is firm turned into you go
to McGill reading nobody has those
little Greiger's anymore people are six
foot Gregor's grow back reg reg reg reg
reg reg reg reg reg right over you your
bones are shaking people bring air horns
and remembering cap guns and the kids
are shooting off their cap guns until
this the smoke fills the room and you
can't breathe I was once at a wedding
just goes to show you that great ideas
are not always that great yeah they put
a box of sparklers on every table and
when the Husson caller came in they
douse the lights and everybody
stuck their sparklers into the candle on
the table and the whole room was filled
with sparkles it must have made a great
shot and then the sparklers go out and
one by one they fill the room with this
acrid smoke and people were dancing and
falling by the wayside I just remember
that the saxophone play is standing
outside the door play but he couldn't
breathe good it was it seemed like such
a great idea you know and these kids
shooting off these cap guns that this
smoke fills the room you can't breathe
you know and that's already the ones who
just have cap guns are the people coming
with like m16s you know I mean like you
know ak-47 assault rifles and I mean
it's like the more noise I can make so
the the better I am in general it always
makes you wonder makes you wonder
alright the purpose of it is to stay
about a mullick what is Amalek yeah
I'm alike as we mentioned last week is
suffolk about your circus tries to cool
us off do you think that makes for a
better career set Magilla i think it
makes for a better experience of
appreciating the story i don't think so
there was a wonderful cartoon and
muhammediye I don't know how many years
ago maybe 20 years ago maybe 30 years
ago I'm trying to remember I haven't at
home clip somewhere and it says porn 50
years ago and you see two Yudin with
patch jackets and each one is bringing
to the other one a shelf - with a few
homemade treats and the exchanging Aetna
smiling at each other it says today you
see two people in two different rooms
talking on their phones and they're
surrounded by these gigantic cellophane
wrapped packages with you know pre-board
items and this is a bit for a more
meaningful shot - doesn't make for a
more meaningful experience I don't think
so
I don't think so we've we've lost that
man
Jake of it or you know you have to have
a theme and so the theme has to
everything has to fit into the theme and
so you're not necessarily sending
anybody things that they actually want
just fits in nicely with you a theme
yeah I remember more I shudder had this
wonderful column firm it was so funny I
actually saved it I don't save much yeah
and just it was like like a Purim play
you know what was goes on in Perm it was
hysterically funny this fellow comes in
and he's like I've got such a headache
already
you know he says oh don't worry I have
my f to perm theme the shallows - you
know it's got tylenol in it and you know
whatever it is because you know
everything has a theme to it every year
the kids who were still left they I was
like what are we gonna do for him what
are we gonna theme and I said I have an
idea how about we make the theme perm mm
I don't bake some hamantaschen a little
bottle wine guess what they roll their
eyes and say ah but you don't get it
nope don't get I don't get ya
the only idea they were throwing around
that seemed to get an appeal was make
firm great again which is the
inspiration for this podcast yeah
so get like a red bag you know and quit
Trump related things in it but what does
that mean that boy did it yes just have
everything in the shape of a tea I don't
know what it means but anyway you know
this the this used to be something that
was so warm so nice you I was sending
you something that was meaningful to me
that I wanted to share with you yeah and
the drinking is completely out of hands
so me one of the highlights of my poem
which I cannot enjoy anymore is I used
to go to visit with Marsha Shapiro and
I'd sit at the table and he'd always say
to me new
Dominion and Hashem ketch complain about
those you have watch this podcast
understand the significance so I said
yeah let me tell you story Ramat Eshkol
was a changing over neighborhood it had
a lot of older israelis it was not meant
to be a religious neighborhood for
example didn't have any suka mere
pursuit but young couples as the as the
community aged realized they could get
themselves an apartment at a good price
and so the neighborhood was in flux and
it was starting to change over so the
person says to me I live in one of these
buildings and there were a lot of older
secular people who live there and a
neighbor of mine ad Shiva guy decided to
perm night he's gonna make it's gonna
make a Missy bar for his friends a new
plastic music and with loud and drinking
and goes and I saw the people on the
floor keep opening their doors the older
people are looking down the hallway they
didn't know how to stop this they had
not seen a party like this and it was
very disturbing so my wife went to knock
on the door and tell the wife of this
young couple you know you disturbing the
other neighbors and she said screw me
and her mind your own business don't
tell us what to do a whole thing like
this so this is the story it told us
relation and he got very upset I'm good
at that and get various service tear up
no I'd you give them a pot she says says
first of all there's no onion of of
drinking at night the drinking is only
the day and it's only part of the sudha
the drinking is only wine and the
drinking and he used to say this is his
drinking if only for people who are over
40 he said because the purpose of
drinking is Nicholas II I in for your
it's a soda and I'll tell you 40 there's
nothing inside of you that's worth
coming out I had an addendum and what
does come out is much better if it
stayed inside yeah and he's very upset
you going to permit and have no
consideration for other people which
brings me to the top
him I don't know if they have this
experience everywhere in their cell we
do they hire limousines or you know
horse and carriages or whatever there
you have some kind of stick now hold on
to you sugar guys come into your house
and they sing and they dance and then
they ask for money and then they do a
whole drunk routine some of the guys are
drunk sometime are throwing up you know
you give money not enough that there's
not that you know they make a hole make
a hole in another way
I remember one very prominent yeshiva
came and no bunch of drunk guys they
were acting stupid they asked me for
money and I said why there's a bunch of
a heinous why would I give you money
I said you're coming in here claiming
that your yeshiva where people sit and
learn so instead of sitting down like
mention you know staying over different
area and instead of acting like like a
bento would act you act like an idiot
and then you expect me to give you money
and so a couple of the sober guys were
like no no no pay attention they try to
drag him out is not going to go there's
a couple of these drunk guys that
knocking over things you know they're
spilling things it uh-huh
I said I said no you don't get it you
don't get a dime out of me I don't give
a bunch of drunken the animals the money
you tell me you told me they're so hot
yeah Bonet tell you gets my family crazy
but when my son is their home
you know the Tatem he'd hear them bag on
the door and he would go outside first
and he explained to them the rules
so anybody's drunk don't bring them in
sit down nicely I'm trying to drag him
into a dancing circle say over the rad
Toya you don't be polite whatever he
gives you say thank you
so the amount of Tatem who come around
to me have dropped dramatically so
somebody said to me no it's fine it's
fine I understand that if you know if
you're a a couple with two little kids
you know and a bunch of sugars come in
and dance in your living room you know I
mean
probably adds the affirm you know and I
don't even mind if it's a dancing but
when people acted not nicely it's uh
it's it's it's and I understand that
what do you what's the message you're
trying to give a crew us but that's what
porn is act like an animal get drunk I
might as event people throwing up at my
prom Sudha yeah when I was in yeshiva
many years ago many years goes by I too
used to be like one guy get drunk and
perm was on Friday and this guy got
drunk didn't wake up to moti Shabbos and
he walks in he's so proud of himself
William would you drink I said it's so
impressive
come my freshman you missed kiddush the
eraser you missed my roof Krish Medea
Raisa yeah you missed the Shabbos Judah
next day you miss Chris at i-i'm if to
have Tyra you missed the kids show yo
you mr. Suder show y'all push I'll show
this you know you miss Mendeley Matt Wow
why would a great what a great myths for
you did what a freshman there was one
time that he ran in usual I am Shushan
Portman came out on a Friday and and
this guy comes to show and he's like
he's screaming he's carrying on your
dancing and he's Okoboji opposite he's
like he's I guess he was drunk or he was
acting like he was drunk there's a fine
line between those two and so I finally
turned to him and I say you're in a shul
and this is Shabbos stop it
and his friend says yeah he can't help
it he's drunk I said they'd take him out
of here
he doesn't belong in a shul what is what
is this what is this a drunken party
this is Sheol this is Darwin kodesh over
here with governing if you can't do it
then go outside to come in here and act
like an idiot that porn becomes an
excuse to act like an idiot
they're doing a poor meal and an rotten
sometimes that remember Shimura solution
applies also on the farm I can say
whatever I want do whatever I want Jeff
Kurr that's not that's our firm is
supposed to be promised this day of such
tremendous power of - fela I know people
spend the whole pearl diving co-op wash
it yacht
anyone who puts out their hand the king
will grant your request and perm becomes
a day for them of tremendous feeling I
may have mentioned this if I didn't last
podcast they have these things called
the Shiva Budokai Yehudi yeah you know
they go and they said learn I asked this
sir admission and Mishra wouldn't permit
he says no that's not the din that's not
the abode of the day yeah since there's
an Indian of learning something at the
SU dub that's a did in the student here
in Yerushalayim we have a didn't to say
over some hopeless Pesach because it's
thirty days before Pesach and Shushan
poem comes out obviously which is also a
plug for our special Pesach program
that's gonna be coming up second year
that we're doing a Pesach program and
it's a you start learning help us
Pesach already 30 days before so should
we cut the Mac leg so that's coming up
so can I change things I don't know if I
can change this it's very hard to turn
back the clock time is marching to a to
a conclusion and someone told me a story
about it was Tish about afternoon and
people going crazy
someone cuts it will go crazy so they
set up this kind of like you know rope
trap and anyone who worked at the base
matters they would pull the rope and the
guy would dangle from his ankle you know
i'm tish buff anyway the rebel walks in
midian realizes the river and they catch
him and he's hanging upside down like a
vase the Rebbe goes they'll encourage
and he says a coach bro what do you want
for these people anymore they don't
understand anything just bring Michelle
already this nut there's no point to
this anymore
that was some years ago and as a wise
man once observed we already hit rock
bottom and we started to dig so so it's
it's not it's let's make perm great
again let's make a nice shelf - it's not
crazy yeah that that we're going to
deliver the people let's make let's make
a a nice Sudha with singing and divert
IRA yeah let's let's let's make the
Megillah reading something that doesn't
become you know onerous like I say
imagine if you live anyplace else
besides you Vishal I mean you're coming
out from a tiny sand you're sitting
there and these people are making all
this terrible noise and you know and all
the smoke and everything I think it's
possible to recapture at least on some
level and Stephen Covey's the seven
Habits of Highly Effective People speaks
about your circle of influence you have
a circle of influence that includes you
and if you work on yourself you can
expand it out and include more people
and so more people come into your circle
of influence because they're drawn to
what you're doing there's no expression
build a better mousetrap and they'll be
the path to your door and if we could
figure out a way to make part of
something that once again is fun has a
certain purity to it has a certain
Tamira skate to it yeah but that are
given crazy so I think there's I think
there's a value to that so that's our
hope that's our prayer that we're gonna
make this poem a really old time
for old-time religion give me that
old-time religion give me that old-time
