61: A Heavenly Embrace

[Music] hi I'm Deborah Lansky and welcome to the special circus hollowmade edition of the rabbi Olaf ski show and whether you're watching on tourney time or have you watched or listened to your podcasts thank you for taking our time during your unitive to be able to listen a podcast is it's sort of like like a murder case that you know if you don't solve it in the first 48 hours so then it gets much harder same thing is true with a podcast that most of the views take place like in the first 48 hours so I assume you're watching this during circus otherwise you know like eating mats on shoes has a certain appeal but the crunch isn't quite there anyway but I was so nice to be able to be with you we would be filming this in my suka except for two reasons one is it's so hard to move this bookcase out there and this has become so identified with the raviolo ski show to the point that two couples came from America just to take their pictures and the bookcase that's it some people go to the Geisel some people go to my bookcase this is the robbery Alaska show and we might you know see if we can arrange like a green-screen kind of situation and then different people could introduce the Revel a ski show we could put on this farm in the background digitally or maybe we could just you know we've always been saying we're gonna make up a big poster that you could do the rebel ask each other directly from your home and see if anybody watches it but it's so nice to be able to spend this with you so like I said we would be doing this in my suka but first of all you know I have to move this farm out there second of all the acoustics are not so good you're outside and you're listening to all the neighbors and all the banging dishes and things like that so we're in my home we're in order to be able to create that best atmosphere for you we turn off the air conditioning and people are sweating and just to show the amount of effort the perspiration that we put into this show and I've gotten many as we reaching the end the next podcast is going to be the anniversary show and and as we reach the end I've been getting a whole bunch of emails about people who tell me how much they appreciate the show and how much it's really added to them and encouraging me to continue doing this and it's a sham hopefully we'll keep doing this like I say we're almost done with a year a previous podcast that we did before Yom Kippur about forgiveness got probably the most reaction of any podcast I did and two different directions one is validation there's a lot of people felt like I was hurt so badly I'm not ready to forgive yet and it was nice to hear that that's okay and that forgiveness is a process and then I got a whole bunch of emails giving suggestions of how you could overcome that pain and be able to forgive somebody and we'll probably talk about that on the later podcast but first I want to thank our sponsors and this is an honor of the bar mitzvah of Yaakov Shmuel shankha Mazel Tov whose birthday is of Shonna robber yeah and whose Bar Mitzvah will be parshas voracious Mama's coming up what a tremendous similar Yaakov was a big fan of rabbi Olaf's key which shows what an intelligent and incredibly morally sensitive young man he is and of the podcast well you can't get quite more discerning than that not every 12 year old is able to appreciate what I say although to be fair when I used to write for the ha Madea somebody said to me I'm so glad you write for the hammer diego's I tried reading Rebbetzin Heller's article and it's so deep and so philosophical and then I read your article four-year-old can understand and I thought that was great no it was great that's not my only story like that with Robertson hella we were once on a panel in in Manchester in England and a encounter conference my good friend every yway Rubenstein was running it brought us out and the final question was what's a good Jew and Robertson hella answered essentially along the lines of the my around how do you define good good is something that serves a purpose and does what it's supposed to do a good cup is one that doesn't leak you know things like this and I said you know what a good Jew is take a look around this room look at the people who came out yeah to be able to spend the day learning Torah look at the people from Liverpool even though there's a major football match that soccer for my American friends today they came out here in order to be learned oh this is a good people that's what a good Jew is I know his tremendous applause and afterwards somebody said you know Rebbetzin hell you're just too smart it just goes over everybody hell it you know it's just too far for people that's why I'm glad we have our laugh ski here he knows how to speak but those of us who are the podcast aficionados know how that's not true and that there's so much depth and meaning normally people don't even realize it because of the entertainment value but I remember I had somebody once I was listening to a tape he used to come to my shear him just because he was having a good time and he was one of the tapes and he says I didn't realize it you see a lot of deep things I said what are you trying to kill my partner sir just say I'm funny there's lots of people saying deep things yet but those who obviously this young man yeah coach Shawn understands that on a deeper level and the the dedication continues we look forward to seeing you again in Los Angeles at on Shea MS yeah my good good friend Robby Summers who we were in yeshiva together and Ariel 1975 out of time and he was one of the people who was assigned to try to be a good influence on me obviously unsuccessfully and my and my roommate very hrabowski in Boca Raton I'll give him a shout-out he was specifically put in my room positive influence on me and he always felt bad that he never achieved that but but anyway I I say listen you know you don't know how bad I would actually be if I didn't have the influences in my life but anyway wish you a big Mazel Tov and you should have a beautiful Bar Mitzvah and you could sing that song those two kids was a Dustin and a VRAM you know they have the the Bar Mitzvah song you know they put up and a ton of dough time that was it I get them mixed up all the time right it doesn't know is one of those do you know that when you have two names you know that gets it you know you know that's why I never had twins cuz I told my wife I was gonna name them L dot and made that and I just thought that's just too much fun when do you get a chance to do that I know whatever members that has so on goes something like on your Bar Mitzvah day and it was very catchy to my kids my kids love that album they used to play it all the time so big Mazel Tov and my friend revery summers I'm sure will be bringing me out to Los Angeles again and it's always nice to be back in my own stomping ground but as I mentioned it is circus and so I spoke last week oh how Circus is such a special time and I used to sit with my father in the sukkah I used to reflect I want to share with you another soccer memory which to me was very dramatic in America the closest young TIFF you have to being nothing ish mean answers because the since they took the second a similar I just mean that Terrace amazed it's MCAS target it's a first - immediate area so there's no soccer except my Suffolk you know and it's no doubt meaning you say trills Geshem which is always a lot of fun you know but for the most part it's a but we hear in there it's rel we do our goodbyes to the suka I know Shauna rambha just as Yakima was born and hoshanah Rabbah but we left the souq event to go to the hospital but but we we you know we have our goodbyes to the suka party and an America they used to do a tantrum eating a terrace and I remember when I was a habit I'm so the receiver would sit in the sukkah and he would sing certain songs only during that list leaving the sucker on Schmidty had saris that's when he would sing certain songs damn one of them is a haunting Yiddish song some people know it and some people don't we sing this in my suka on the first night of circus and it is so beautiful it is in Yiddish and as we have established many times I don't speak Yiddish I managed to drag my way through this song every single year those of you who are actually Irish speakers first comment on this is my Yiddish and it's a Bissel sh'mey raba yeah i hope that i make up for it inhale moving the song is to me a circle of clean Brecht Allah give me nah let me rise circle again I so dig them down meet the bacillus hi they took me in circle of an acht a circle or a cleaner a little suka from boards you may not make it and so I made myself a Sukkah and I covered the roof but that Bissell us huh with a little Scott Disick's a meter in circle uh but not I sit in my circuit light event accountant boys dog dish Felton when the left Olaf selections is feel him is me Raph here ich by if mask me a kid and the bread left a la table there handguns still it's a cold wind blowing through the cracks and the candles looks like they're gonna get blown out and to me it's a finish when I'm making kiddush and the little lights the candles are burning so still Samaritan gave me that poison is it red via my death toll ugh yeah I see Stubbs's havoc and za hooked Mitch leg Tattler the sucker felt I the first course with a pale face my daughter brings in she stands back and she says with fear tateleh the sucker felt the all time that the sook is about to fall down Zionist kinda hope this kind sir now they're there sir garnished time bong don't be an hour don't be worried sook is not gonna fall down is a Haitian girl that's 5000 yeah and the circle as each day Afghans long hiiiiii shankha it already is butts 5000 yeah about 2,000 years and the circle of a state not God's love I do lives in a sucker for 2,000 years we've been living in a sucker because a real sucker came down hi Rafa man who yo Kim are you Kim la new asuka's David Ha Na fellas right the base of mikdash it described as a sucker that falls down it's it's a it's a sucker and we say that we want to rebuild the Sioux community the base at mikdash and I'm just putting it out there because I know there are many musical people who appreciate this podcast and I'm reaching out to them from the bottom of my heart you must write a different tune to those words yeah it just drives me crazy is it just it just goes on and run huh come on oh you Kim la new asuka's the of it haniv our last know your game la new asuka's da da no father ha how long can you do it you have to sing that for a week that's the only sucker song come for some after buckle gecko but that's more generic yeah but the only around my yoga and that's it you need something a little more lively yeah sometimes tunes are like that they just they just seem to repeat themselves you know there's only like one part one's a little higher than the other so my musical people out there I'm hoping that next year's podcast on circus I'm going to sing you our Jara come on I might even have you on the show if you can get to Israel anyway if not I'll just send you a copy duplication you didn't I'll talk to you what a beautiful song is so moving so one thing we sit outside in the sucker and we sing it and we think the suckers gonna fold them it's amazing we're not in the worst time of Jewish history I know any time is the worst time of Jewish history yeah but but we've gone through some pretty rough times yeah we're and so could discussed the shot secondo when they weren't allowed to build a sucker how they had to build it in secret I had a Rebbe in Hanko a woman who was in Germany before the war and he describes how they used to build their sucker on their porch under the wall so that they people couldn't see it was a very low Sokka that they'd be able to go in and sit it oh my god so we had some rough times today of course the the anti-semitic events are on the rise but it's not like we're where they're killing people in the streets which periods of time that we had there were no actual pogroms taking place and most keep things in perspective you know it's not nice when you come to your Shore and there's a swastika sprayed on the outside but but it's not the same thing as whether he used to Club Jews in the streets so I'm saying that well not in the worst time we went through some pretty rough years where it looked like Torah Judaism was not going to survive Devvarman gorian once said he wanted to preserve may of sharm as a museum so people can see what judaism used to look like when people don't don't remember hashem today when when you see Tori Judaism growing I had a fellow in North America he told me was growing up in England his father used to take him down they didn't keep Shabbos but Sunday morning they used to go down to the old Jewish neighborhood his wee boy LOX and bagels and and herring and it's a take a whiff children this is Judaism that's what we remained that's what that's what people had and a Sukkah I had a brother who didn't become a Shabbos until later in life but he was looking to buy a house so my father said there was a you know they used to give you a way to know if it was a Jewish neighborhood drive around in December and if you don't see too many holiday lights up then it's probably a Jewish neighborhood but this was like September October so my father said you know he says my father what am I supposed to do he says both drive around a look for sokka's yeah so he drove around and he finally came to Willowbrook in Staten Island he found a lot of suckers but he is the fly in the ointment if there's no holiday lights that tells me that there's Jews if there's a lot of suckers it tells me that they're religious Jews and so suddenly he ended up in a very firm neighborhood yeah he's always a little embarrassing on Saturday morning when he would drive to work and there's other people going to show you but but a souca souca is something that's it's it's way past matzo ball soup it's way past bagels and cream cheese you know it's it's it's it's way past the Passover Seder or or Yom Kippur asuka is something that is intimate and that's why a lot of people don't keep it yeah [Music] it's it's it's it's how many people even know about Sookie so or understand what it's about when I was growing up I should shun everybody knew about Jim Koepp everybody knew about Passover every knew about no one knew about source no one knew about focus these holidays didn't make it in I knew a guy who was working in Manhattan you know he took off for different holidays and things and so he tells the boys he says I can't come in you know whatever was Tuesday Wednesday it shows it comes to the next day he says there are two other Jews working in this firm none of them ever heard of course you're just making it up shrew is circus two out of the three of the shows regardless does that make it in big time yeah it's so interesting among among the certain groups of Christians who are very careful I know a fellow who used to make his living selling Doug meet him to Christians they want to have a set you know the four species Chris it's in the Bible and they would celebrate Tabernacles circus they build their little Tabernacles and it's it's amazing thing that there are probably more Christians keeping it than Jews I'm not sure if that's a true statistic but neither do so I could say anything I want anyway but but you know Circus the zodiac Kurdish says well the gomorrah says ideally a circuit should have four walls it's kosher with three walls and it's even kosher with two walls and it's erisa Pesa a little doorway and that's in fact the word soccer the Samak is surrounded on all sides the Huff is surrounded on three sides and the hay is two walls and it's erisa Pesa that's the word suka but the zyre cutter says you know what two-and-a-half walls are that's how you take somebody around 1/2 a little piece over here you're going to suck in a cobra who's taking you around it's something special it's beautiful it's intimate and it's a pity that people miss out on it people don't get a chance to experience it and I spoke about this when we spoke about our pacer homo Aid forced teal limb time with the family one day I'm gonna have my perfect circus I'm gonna stay my soca is that many people they're busy running around going to a attract CEA's as we call it over here at Alexia's you know they go to attractions they go to things that go on trips to go so they're just sitting in the sukkah ok so there's all those traveling so could tricks it if you have a van you can open the two back doors and put stock on top of it they came out with inflatable suckers you know they're people who can have snapped together suckers yeah what can I tell you I've always been a sucker for soca you could just inflate but but but to be able to sit my sucker beautiful thing it's it's such an opportunity to be able to spend it together as much as you can take advantage of you sucker if you can't if you can't if you if you have little kids you have to do things with them that's great hopefully you reach the point where the older children will take the younger children away and you can stay in your sucker yeah Fira Tish you suck us in you sucker people come in I'm a piece of cake yeah it's always nice it's always nice to have a piece of cake but I haven't in the socca that's like a lay shade bazooka yeah it's a great time the only chance you get to use that terrible terrible joke what brother do you make if you sit on a piece of bubblegum Laish a bazooka you can use that one and yes you do that's a lot anyway but it's so beautiful beautiful time to be able to be in the sukkah just to be able to enjoy it and that's it's Manson casino there is not a time of year when we waste more money I mean I mean waste money I'm gonna put this into absolute terms on a normal day what would you pay for a palm branch not much trust me on this yeah and the Gemara used to say they would buy them and separate them and time together and make up room who's paying for palm branches because I'm so kiss for a good Lula it's so hard to find a good Lula but you find a good lulav oh I love those the big thick green ones you nose ah but they send them all to America along with all the good fruit we get the leftover fruit here here's your but there's the export but what you pay for a little citron the citron market is surprisingly extremely limited they're basically lemons with bumps you never find them selling them in the supermarket because there's not that much of a demand for its citron might as well get a lemon yeah so you know if they sold them as a fruit how much would they go a pound no I can get a bag of its program they were in course too much but here so kiss so you spend all this money on an astragal is my only love does my raw voice willow branches trust me nobody wants those and as soon as Circus is over I have no value the kids go around and collect the s rhogam thinking that their mother will make it into s rock jelly some people do but between me and you very small market for s rock jelly you don't find people going out they go to buy jelly they want grape they want strawberry yeah nobody nobody's looking to buy themselves Astro jelly it's just not that popular guy supposed to do something with them I guess but considering what you paid for it you every night the homage is jellies costing you we waste money well spending on things it's probably the most expensive holiday I mean assuming that you don't insist on buying kabura hand Matz's and you know and buying every product that comes out and pays off of you if you have pretty simple I have I know somebody I know that when people come to him you know they they're collecting for chemical the Pisgah you know that they need money for their Matt says he says I will buy you all your matches for paisa same place I do I know Sharad I by hand Matt says you know in the bottom because no I only get from a special fabric since then you don't need my money you were too rich I'm not rich enough to buy hormones assuming you buy regular masses and you don't try to buy the fanciest type of things you know eggs and dairy products and you know meeting chicken you know like like during the year you'll find that pay stuff is not as expensive a circus and a sucker in the circuit decorations and the food for the meals and they that would mean it that's why we read on circus coelus heavily heavily Co Hevel all the money and all the stuff it's not important it's not important how much we put into these things how much we're worried about getting the finest things we leave our fancy house and we go into a Sukkah and we live in their little house without a roof and we sit with that kind of sparkle because whether we realize it or not that's how we live our whole life is jank that's 5,000 yeah and the circle of a state napkins long 2000 years we've been living in a Sukkah time said to a person we asked him where's all your furniture in your curtains and your carpet and he said I'm just passing through we're just living in a Sukkah this world is temporary we're going to this world is a prisoner to the truck line of Olam haba today to the banquet hall and here we're not living we're in a sucker we live temporary we live simply yeah you can live very nicely simply don't get me wrong yeah but every wine tells the story when he was a Rovin Miami and he had a Caruso with this red book he says we were sitting in our back yard under the spreading grapefruit tree and the river says we have to remember that this is goes but as goes goes it's not so bad it's okay we can we can they got you have a very comfortable suka a beautiful sucker yeah like I mentioned last time about my sleeping sucker you know the world I'm a pest that I roll that the sonically crawl in there and it's a delightful delightful and you could be comfortable on the sucker but you have to remember our life is eventually to get back to its shell and build cyka stuff and I know fellas the base of mikdash that's our only real place in this world when Yakov Aveeno comes to the hunter bias he says man I rahama come I said this muhkam because the only muhkam that we have is the basement dish why because we gave ace of a limousine and we took Olam haba it's the stories of Frenchmen Levites he says what kind of an idiot is Asaph you trade Olam haba fallen hase what's was Oma's it piece of black black bread and her Nana and I turn up for that you give up Olam haba he says then I got to America and I saw ISA wasn't so stupid but because we gave ace of this world what do we have in this world there's only one muhkam that we have and that's what when Yaakov goes away to build the car you saw coach Burke will make sure he stops in the heart bias the muck on my Mick - my Nora omocha my zan this is the place this is the this is the the essence of where she lives in the souk us Dov it in the in the dwelling of a cottage berroco with that with the Trina hanging above us somebody wrote in he was so impressed when we sang both lovey he sent in the words to be able to put on the under the video there the video down there it's a you can see the notes he says that everyone should be able to sing along and I guess we'll put up the words here circle if you want to print them out and sing them with your with your family and enjoy circus ah what a beautiful beautiful time to be able to sit in the sukkah the coach Burcu holding his arm around us I was being able to enjoy not worried about all the physicality he'll have like Oh Helena Callas it's all nothing it's all Hellas is a steam it's an illusion so nothing the amount of time and effort people spend on stuff amazing thing so mid-session is a mastaba forget huh let's be happy on this beautiful beautiful yontiff and next week is our anniversary our first anniversary show so anyone would like to sit in special anniversary greetings maybe we'll read them on the show and because got to kill some time on the anniversary show and that's it for this week if you want to find out more about the show you can go to River Alaska calm you could leave a comment on this episode you could sponsoring episode you can have to get in there because we're getting a lot of sponsors people realize what an opportunity this is so they were backed up in our sponsorships will fit you in because I like you yeah ke why why because we like you and you can find about upcoming events and all kinds of nifty things and that's it you should have a beautiful circus I'm Deborah Orlowski and this is the Reb relapse Keisha [Music]
