hi I'm Debra laughs keselowski show and
welcome to our special pre circus
program as we get ready for a circus it
says in the Terre about the Dalit
meaning the four different things that
we take for a costume ahem
but yomaira show you will take it on the
first day say that has ow what do you
mean the first day it's the 15th of the
month should have said we'll take it on
the 15th of the month and so the sages
make ad Russia they learn out of his
puss ik y is sook is called the first
day cuz it's the first day that you have
a chance to sin no you come out of em
Kippur and you have to build the sucker
you have to decorate it and you have to
get you dialed meet him and you have to
do the shopping for Yun Tiffany do the
cooking for hunter and this year we have
a Shabbos in between last time you ever
sharpest of Shabbos and then it's a
review under that out so so tight people
don't have a chance to sin so it's the
first days of a chance to sin and I say
it's just good planning if you plan it
out properly miss Tommy to be able to
sin even during these four days and
Ralad over is that I'd very often do so
there's a proof that you know if you if
you plan things you could put up your
Sokka get you don't mean them get all
your food for you and still do a sin it
takes a certain determination and
organization but I think if you really
put your mind to it but I mean you can't
sit yeah we send away the Sutton on Yom
Kippur there's no sentiment a problem
and Yom Kippur is is a time when we are
living out of this world out of this
world and that energy propels us towards
focus because circus is that time when
we're half in this world and half out of
this world
now I had students who lived most of
their life like that they would have
been in heaven but
the idea is that we're in walls that are
regular house we don't have a real roof
for those of you watching in Chicago
roof yeah we have a temporary roof
it says if we're in this world and not
in this world for a week we're going
through this process circus this is a
man in San Jose no it's so happy because
we're confident that we did true volume
Kippur we're confident that we were
forgiven and now we're going to suck his
mind somehow saying we're gonna
celebrate
yeah we're gonna party that's what it's
about
simply visitors whoever he's the party
in the basin mikdash now I share with
you memories the memories I went to the
Hebrew Academy of Nassau County and we
had school during colloid the reason we
had school is because they felt like
there are a lot of kids who would never
see a sucker unless there was school the
school built the sukkah and they built
the sukkah that was mokuba when I was
growing up it was a metal frame with
canvas sheets and these large bamboo
poles on the top and it had it served
the purpose it was a sucker the wind
would blow and the walls would flap em
up you know and he was usually freezing
New York at that time and and it was on
my synagogue we also Ida sucker
people who came this one suka they go
out they make it is you know now is it
basically very few people where I was
growing up and it's oka now I was I went
to a synagogue in East Meadow which was
a more Jewish neighborhood I lived in
North America which was a distinctly not
Jewish neighborhood and we were one of
the very few suckers in North America
now my father who was not a sentiment
fellow part of that I ran off to the
fact that he was a Polish again and
that's how you would talk hi my Waco
chimera and I remember my grandfather
used to talk the same way you know is
that kind of like its I may have told
the story already but there's a spoiler
she it is on his deathbed his families
gathered around mrs. Marshall Union says
yeah slain below you here says yeah Hika
you here says yeah then who's in the
store that people are not that emotional
you know I mean yeah this man is on his
deathbed he's all the senses don't worry
pop you know we plan the funeral and get
you a beautiful hearse
we're gonna get you no limousine for the
family it's gonna be a beautiful affair
the second brother says what do we need
a limousine for we all have our own guys
get there in a hearse and we'll drive it
our course the third son says what are
we into her side I got a station wagon
you know put down the backseat but they
didn't take him to the think of the
cemetery the father cause my friend says
get my pants a walk it was only two
times that I remember my father becoming
sentimental Dan right emotional the
first was the day after my casa I
remember this it was the first Firma
Casa de in the family and I'm gonna take
from I mean you she was she was the one
you know and it was it was beautiful was
really very beautiful I have to say and
and my father said you have to be
careful because sometimes people wait
for you when you're going out look for
the fussing collar and they robbed them
so I'll take all the gifts
and I'll give it to you tomorrow when
you come by the house okay
it's a good gifts and the next day I
come by my collar I'm married Mannie I
remember when I got engaged I was
allowed to sit on the couch in the
living room that was the first time in
my life my parents at six boys oh and we
would you know tear the house apart I
mean like yeah every now and then my
father would move something to find all
hole in the wall so my mother wanted one
room that was an adult room that she
could have people and she fixed up the
living room she put these nice couches
she put down carpeting we were not
allowed to walk into that room if for
necessity you had to cut across he
didn't have enough time to walk around
the entire house which we usually did it
was a plastic runner going through the
living room you had to walk on the
runner to get across you couldn't do
that and I never said on the catch when
I got engaged my my mother invited
McCullough into the living room and I
guess I was allowed to come with her
which between me and you were highly
overrated but in any event but you know
so so I I came with my collet now the
first time and my father's eyes watered
and he said I wish my mother had lived
to see this and that was the only time
that he ever mentioned it after that
whatever he would talk about the wedding
he says I was a man after hundreds of
people there was a it's crazy that
moment no men do we felt it was it at a
time that's when he built his soca now
so that you appreciate this my father
was a florist
my father was an interesting fellow he
did a lot of different things but he
ended up becoming a florist he was very
creative very creative Philip had
florist in a nursery and he says the
sukkah is supposed to be the Harvest
Festival it's not supposed to
pretty bad out of canvas in bamboo it's
supposed to be something that's that's
life so my father nailed up a wooden
frame made a wooden frame and then he
nailed trellises onto the wooden frame
if you don't know what trellises are
these wouldn't laddus like works we put
them all around and then he brought in
boxes of cedar greens and an America
florist often decorate arrangements
would see the greens and he and he got
see the greens and he wired on the
greens on the entire side and then the
other side of the sucker so the entire
sucker was made out of cedar grades and
then for the stock he put down some
slats and the entire Scott with cedar
grades there's what smelled beautiful
and it looked beautiful and he would
decorate it with Indian corn which I
have not found here in Israel it's corn
that grows and different kinds of colors
and things he would hang Indian corn
gourds now here in art sell I have
bought gourds because there's a mimic
and Cora to eat gourd and it's gigantic
large green thing but in America they
have these decorative gourds which are
these small things that come in
different shapes and colors and gorgeous
we'd hang them from the from the ceiling
the Indian corn he bought autumn leaves
it was the florist and the entrance was
covered with autumn leaves as well as
different places around the walls and
otherwise he had dried dried flowers
with : straw flowers and he covered the
outside all over with this rough silence
and then he brought potted mums plants
and put them around the outside of it
and it was they used to bring groups to
come and see the sucker
it was it was something that was so
magnificent just just to experience my
father would go out and eat in the
sukkah the whole week the whole week
he'd come home from work you know my
mother would say he wants up because I
have it in the sucker it's in the so
good in him and there was one that was
the first night okay it was very cold
and I was an FPT those you unfamiliar
with the term I was a fiery about you
but I remember one of my first year as I
told my father I'm gonna sleep in the
Succa he says me you crazy you'll catch
pneumonia I said the MS Leslie was like
I took my bed out for in the sukkah and
of course my father was wrong I only got
bronchitis but I tried that trick but
you know but like you know
anyway right but I used to sit with him
at Masuka and that was the only time you
would wax sentimental for some reason so
cos he had these wonderful memories of
circus and and many we talk about his
father and we talk about his mother he
never talked about these things it was
only this hooker there was something in
the sukkah that that just took it to a
different place and at some point my
father started making he didn't call it
simple as business or a reason I make a
Sukkah party you start inviting people
and it got bigger and bigger he had to
have caterers there chafing dishes and
all kinds of things going on it was it
was quite the happening I've tried to
imitate that in my own small way I've
never been able to duplicated what my
parents did with that with that
beautiful beautiful silver jewelry if it
was something that was out of the world
in fact a little fun but it's not really
tying into circus but it's a good buddy
I don't even know how to explain this to
your generation if you're my generation
you understand but
there was this Mateus that was called
the candy store a candy store
it wasn't dabka candy but you go in
there and buy soda now today if you want
to buy soda or if you're from the
Midwest pop soft drink what have you
call it yeah I kept soda yet that you
didn't didn't just get that you would go
to the you'd go to the candy store there
was a soda fountain
they had a faucet that Seltzer came out
of and they had syrup and they would put
the coca-cola syrup in and they did the
salsa and they mixed it up and I gave
you the drink on the spot and the these
things don't exist anymore obviously and
they had ice cream and they had malteds
and they were all kinds of different
things you know in the candy store and
they had other stuff that you needed
like grace cigarettes and they're all
the important things yeah anyway this
was a dying breed so when I was growing
up my father found this candy store that
was going out of business and he he
bought the soda fountain it's a whole
sort of mountain he pours down into the
basement and he set it up and he put in
a compressor said it would make sense
a-- and for the singers busy show ever
he filled up all the flavors of of soda
and hit ice cream and a malted machine
and he had you know all the different
toppings in a maraschino cherries in the
and the wet nuts and they whipped cream
my one of my brothers he used to run the
when the soda fountain down there you
know and and it was it was just
something that was so spectacular and my
parents was some hobby the sukkah
mahabad circus I remember it now it was
just something that was so glorious when
I come into suka so okay so maybe next
podcast we'll have a chance to see my
SoCo yeah but it's it's basically I have
a little hotel here in there out the
walls are made out of stone
and I have a pergola and we have the
Scot Lynette saw that you roll out you
know the mats and it's distinctly not my
father so there's no Indian corn and
there's no gourds and there's no water
leaves and there's no potted plants and
there's no straw flowers and there's no
seed of greens yeah but yeah I feel like
the PIAT that we say on Yom Kippur you
know a line of Chiara Valen okay live a
little
God with nothing with nothing yeah but
but I have a coach ahsoka and we
decorated you know my daughter Mendel is
really the one at this point was in
charge of it they my eighth daughter
she's she's the one who's usually in
charge of that and everybody else is out
of the house and she really fills in a
lot listen when you're the eighth girl
you better you bet you have something
live up to you my seventh daughter I
named a bat Sheva and my eighth thought
I was gonna name her batch Mona but I
didn't I went with I went with a
traditional name from one of my one of
my mother-in-law his aunt's and I had he
braised I some of the names they changed
other names and my my Hayley I named it
for my mother-in-law his mother you know
I said named Ralph your mother is her
name was really raffle when my Miriam
was when I told my father I send a few
mother
her name was really Miriam so so I asked
this was Fantini I said what's her name
it's min don't okay I'm not crazy about
that but I'm gonna do it right I told
Madeline I named him indels and my
she never liked that name
[Laughter]
just in case you're wondering you will
never get it right as we say in Hebrew
ain't chance chance you get it right
anyway but so she does a lot of
decorations and one of the decorations
that is most popular not just here now
it's relevant also in America are paper
chains I had somebody come to my suka
one six well it was pick chains for the
picket chains would you hang paper
chains in your house no I would
definitely consider it a lot of fun you
know when you have a little kids they're
running around making trouble yeah I
mean everybody like to make paper chains
at different colors and things and make
enough of them you can hang them all
over the place yeah it's very very
exciting paper chains now that's
interesting why we decorate with paper
chains and on the subject to change his
interesting thing he was supposed to lie
again the lulav you're supposed to tie
them together yeah my son Warren knows
already cuz he helps me with my yeah
I'll meet him by which I mean he gets
him for me and not that I wouldn't do it
it's just that I give off pusle race I
don't know why it is one year I put the
most expensive little up from one of
these places came in a closed box I took
it the guy said to me I took it to the
Pasic the price exceda it was good yeah
so somebody's in my house checking my
little living cos I think it's puzzle I
said it can't be it's got a hutch girl
who did it so right my Simon Thomas
Moser lives across the street for me and
I said I'll pray through him Iseman so
he says you know how hard it is to find
a puzzle live i wanted to make rings i
was going through to try to find a
puzzle whoever it's almost impossible
let me see I hear that's puzzle
oh yeah yeah it's so that's why I just I
try to keep it protected so that I had
the least amount of contact with he's
fixed it actually goes back to the fact
that as I mentioned my father had a
florist a nursery and all the boys
worked in the store except for me he
asked me if I would please not come
because I evidently give off rays that
kill living things this is a deep cut
but there's there's different types of
kryptonite you know no one knows the
green kryptonite that kills Superman but
there's different types one of them is
white kryptonite that only kills plant
life evidently I've been affected by
white kryptonite the best I could I
mean I have artificial plants that have
died on me I mean just forget about it
on the I'm the black thumb of the family
but you know but I tell them I don't
like those very small cutter clocks
kocha clocks are those little you know
woven things that you put on to the
lulav to hold it in and when you get the
real small ones you stick in you know
your husband loving all the leaves come
home I like the wider ones and then you
have to tie them together you know and
you make the ring supposed to tie them
up cuz to keep supposed to be tied up
until the end of circus of shudder ABBA
and then we take the Rings off so that
the lulav can flow freely says the SH
law because when you unbind the love
it's a symphony Segre what is the
happiness involved the FLE free flowing
lulav now so that you appreciate this
yeah your March around with the love and
the Eric and you have to say the whole
shyness it's a little tricky when you're
holding the lulav all tied together and
the Eric and a sitter so they make this
much fun a card I mentioned this once in
shear and the young lady told the father
and he sent it to me Chicago yeah
there's a band that you can wear around
that has the vaginas that you can read
it on your arm as you're carrying it
this was a game-changer for me anyway
but the guy behind me who's usually much
taller than me has the article circus
master which is twelve thousand pages
and weighs 52 pounds I know because it's
hard for him to maneuver it so he rests
it on my head as we're marching around
you know and that's that's really quite
challenging yeah and there's always
somebody poking me with their little
especially it's not okay I used to be a
magician so there's this trick you know
where you put a magician in a box and
you stick in all these swords you know
you have to be able to avoid them you
know so I have a little practice at this
but these little element coming at me
from all directions so now all I need is
for you to pull off them and you know
now you can have it like a bullwhip so
it's a it's a challenge at Sookie's
there so I thought you know the only
time the eraser when we say full hallow
for a week I've seen eight days of
course circus the padishah rim one year
said anyone who says oh no ha Shem but a
lot of qivana will have all that feliz
answered well you can imagine and show
that year I know somebody I know how the
place was rocking you know came to the
Rebbe at the end of the year incident I
don't know I said it with all my
component I didn't get it answered he
says there's the wrong honor
oh no Hashem
Kiani there huh I'm your slave any of
the huh then huh I'm a slave my mother
was a slave p-taff the limo's say right
you don't have to tie me up I'm not
looking to escape I want to be a slave I
was born into slavery I'm good at it
this is where I want to be yeah if you
say to a Kurdish bar Who I am you a
slave I want to serve you then we break
the chains well I that's the reason that
we decorated a sucker with paper chains
easy to break out of
maybe that's why after a whole week of
holding the Zulu lovin and then and the
estwick so tight we take what the Rings
and let it flow and you have the huh and
I'm us a honey of the car and I'm uh I
just I noticed that the musical episodes
get higher views so I'm gonna have to do
a lot more singing
yeah he's after them I say
[Music]
anyway open us up we live yom kippur out
of this world and you know be a vote of
the coin god it was so careful you have
to go like this go like that and bring
the dime hear me that when you're all
done you reach the culture code ocean in
the michigan the coastal ocean was ten
armas by ten hours and we had the our
own that had poles that were ten hours
lon
and the cohen gather on yom kippur had
to get in between those two poles
carrying a spoon of incense in one hand
and a pan of hot coals in the other how
does he get in between the poles well he
could jump but if he spills the coals or
the incense we lands in the air and he's
finished they used to tie a rope them in
case he died if you're good at limbo
Donna yeah you can go underneath I
wouldn't recommend that considering
especially considering that Aaron was 10
I was tall um little of the neck and and
and and then then they like come and I
want to go home I wouldn't suggest that
so how do you do it so because I'll say
because the Aaron wasn't tell face
Malcolm it didn't take up any space
sided student once asked me why did a
coach borrow who make the cars
readership 10 I must play ten hours and
then he put in the arm with the poles
ten hours long and then he had a problem
how the cone together was gonna get in
there and so he made the disappearing
Aaron trick why didn't he just make the
room bigger I said good Kasia but
goodish lucky up because in the base of
Mick Dodge the room was twenty hours by
twenty hours and we put the our own in
the middle and we stuck the Bulls all
the way to the end so we had the same
problem this wasn't an architectural
floor that we solved by a miracle
the reality was that the aroan is not
tow free smoke home the our own is
outside of time and
face when you reach the base of mikdash
and you get into the Koscheck adoshem
you're in a place that is beyond time
and space you are literally out of this
world with a physical and the and the
spiritual meet says yakima vino my no
your aha Malcolm was a look how awesome
it is says about Durham no respects is
our own it's the Ark where that goes
that's where the neighbor comes down
it's the interface of Shimon Verret and
so we work and we working with work out
wingman out of this world and now we go
through suckers we were slowly going to
the process of integrating this world
and that world that we were in that
world of yom kippur reach the end we say
okay we're not in the kosher good ocean
well it take off all those rings we're
gonna move beyond all limitations we're
gonna be out of this world in this world
that's the happiness of circus circus
were sitting in a building but we're
Taha's Khan Fiorina
it was absolutely amazing we are having
this intense experience you know you
have seven weeks it's fierce armor and
it leads up to show us which is called
at saris and each week we focus on one
of the me dice pressing forward to
Ferris it's a total capitalistic stuff
and circus we finish which Meany at
saris it's also at saris but we only
have seven days and and every day we
have to put in an entire week of effort
and every single time we're moving
slightly beyond slightly beyond past all
of our limitations that's the amazing
thing about Circus Circus is a time when
there's this intensity it takes place
and that's where the camera describes
what happened the best make their own
circus says by nightfall the young
Kohanim would light these drug
Cantus lamps on top of the higher bias
and every courtyard was lit up and you
wish a lime it was unbelievable and then
that people would come to the basic
McNish and have someone special even a
party the whole night and before dawn
they would go off and they would draw
the water and they would march it back
and they would blow the chauffeur's and
they would sing and they'd bring it to
the base and make touch and they would
bring the carbon Tom 'add I bring the
morning offering and then they would go
off in the oven chakras and then they
would come back and they would bring the
Musa for furring and then they would go
off and they would davon rusev and then
they would go through the go through the
process you know of the rest of yontiff
they would they would eat their sudan
then they would learn Torah and they
would bring the afternoon offering and
me with that vanilla and then they would
eat another sudha and then they would
and then they would again you know learn
Thai right and before you know it it was
time to start the party again and they
did this day after day after day
Esther Kamara when did they sleep if you
had to sleep you put your head down on
your friends shoulder for a little bit
and then you went back in stay how
intense this time is there's no sleeping
during this time there's nothing to
sleep we're living life we're out of
this world we're in this world and out
of this world
the closest thing we have to being dead
is sleeping the gomorrah says sleep is
one sixtieth of death if you want to
experience what death is like you go to
sleep talking to these teenagers once I
said what's the greatest pleasure in
this world may said sleep I said no
you're kidding me so if you have a day
off so sure I sleep all day
I said need a vacation so what I mean
two months in the summer I slept the
whole time
I said why but you can't wait till
you're dead you'll sleep prep so one of
them said no cuz I'll never have the
pleasure of waking up and going back to
bed
but if every now and then I can open up
the cover is a everything's still here
close it turn it over go back to sleep
I'm fine
we lived Yom Kippur we went out of this
for people like my luck and my look I'm
down sleep we're out of this world
angels and then we go into the sukkah
we're half in and half out we want to
live life we don't want to sleep it away
little children don't want to go to
sleep now I don't want to drag them up
to their beds they don't want to go down
the guy's leg I'm gonna miss something
get to be my age someone sent me a
cartoon once you don't sometimes in a
bar they have what's called a happy hour
you know where the drinks are half price
whatever it is this is when you get to
be my age happy hour is a nap oh yeah
you're just sleeping my life away not
circus so there's no time to sleep we
have to live life the lipids are fullest
to have to enjoy everything eventually
we can go back into our house and go
back to everyday life and live things
the way that we need to but until then
live life to the extreme live life to
the max that's what Circus is any of the
and I myself eat after them I say
right take off my chains
unshackle me set me free I could serve
you so much better hey take off these
ropes think of these chains I'm not
going anywhere I want to serve you I
want to be here for you I want to do for
you let's do it together
we're in the sukkah
it's true you give me an amid store that
completely surrounds you when you go to
the mikveh and I made an oblique
reference to the mikveh experience
somebody brought me and said you never
finish that don't worry we got and we're
not even done with that first year yet
going to the mikveh completely encases
you when you go into the sukkah it
completely surrounds you it's a mitzvah
that you can live in that becomes part
of you so that's it go build your suka
hang your paper chains make you a sucker
as beautiful as you possibly can heron
air its shell eyes do sleep in the
sukkah sometimes I have the opposite
problem it's too hot to sleep in the Sun
I friend of mine who married a girl from
Miami they have air conditioning in the
sukkah it says otherwise you can't stay
there because if it's tire has putted on
the sukkah if you're in pain you can't
stay there so if it's too cold or it's
raining or it's too hot you can't stay
there usually though it's beautiful I
sleep I have my regulus we can I have my
little sleeping suka I have the Ameerpet
you know my little porch off of my or
from one of the bedrooms
it's the wall its tenth bottom is high
enough so I just lay out the stock on
top of it and I crawl into it yeah and I
just sleep there so nice she wake up in
the morning too fast you bang your head
into the sky okay but you know but but
oh so nice just to be surrounded so
we'll talk more about this next week
when we talk about our suka I have a
special circus podcast and until then if
you want to find out more about the show
or this episode or make a comment or
find about upcoming events of a book and
I'm cupping a van tour you sponsor an
episode or anything you go you know the
drill you go to River Alaska calm and
it's all there waiting for you and we
should all have a beautiful yontiff this
is Deborah Orlowski and this is the
reverie Alaska show
