hi this is Deborah Orlowski and welcome
to the rabbi Olaf ski show the first of
the year and I hope you year is going
well during this period of time which
some other guy in tells us is a sort of
a paradox because we know that there's
365 days to the year where you know this
because from the marble Rashi tells us
there were 365 days we know this because
when they are making the cat iris they
say they make 365 portions for one day
every year so we know that there's a
solar year and then we know there's a
lunar year which is 354 or 355 384
depends on the year come out different
ways but take it push it the potion
thing is that there's 11 days between
the lunar year and the solar year and
the villa guardian says that the
Astraeus makeover is that overlap from
last year to this year so if I
interesting concept it overlaps
the Rambam says when the year closes out
you have to look at yourself as 50/50 I
have 50% good 50% bad and if you reach
over then that pushes you over the side
the chasm mission I ask why do you have
to do too much
just do one more Mitzvah and then you'll
have even though the account so it's
love laser says because not doing chuhwa
during a service made chuva is so
serious that it doesn't matter how many
other misses you do that'll outweigh
everything this time of year this week
the focus on doing Shuba now is so
important
what kind of service gives a different
reason he says because it doesn't matter
what you do now the only thing you're
doing is creating for the new account
the old account school
last year's gone so you're 50/50 it
doesn't make a difference what you do
now so sometimes for Lovitz except for
chuhwa because Chava can work retro
actively it can make what you did last
year not exist in other words I'm 50/50
and I can take away from the bad side by
doing children Shubh is the only thing
that can affect last year interesting so
this is a very special time there's this
overlap between the two years there's a
chance for us to do two ver and the
importance of doing chuhwa during as
Sarah's made chuhwa is so important why
you hurt somebody and that person is the
hurt party and he comes to you to give
you an opportunity to try to work things
out and you don't say anything dear Josh
every Matsu how courage by Rojo is here
now
obviously he's not affected by time and
place but it means you can feel how
could his burro whose presence now more
the sense of a coach but a coach Bart
who is everywhere all right Sheamus here
ahsha was there Hashem is truly
everywhere right I think someone made a
song out of it but coach Bravo's
everywhere the word Olam is from the
word head alum it means that he's hidden
by the world and during his Harris made
Shuba he peels away the layers it's
easier to see him to sense him he's
always there but now the mask is coming
off it's easy to see him it's easier to
come close to him this is a time when we
really have to work on ourselves and
this is a very special like I said the
first one of the year and we actually
have a we have a product sponsor now
usually we sponsored in honor of
somebody or in memory of somebody but
now this is actually a product
and is coming to you from a new
dictionary called Talmudic via dei and
you might be asking yourself why don't
you another dictionary so I explained
this to you ok in simple English when I
was growing up what we had was the
Jastrow the Jastrow dictionary does not
have one word in it that you need unless
you know conversational aramaic in which
case you know i don't know what you need
to Jastrow for in the first place if you
just speak Aramaic so if you speak
Aramaic so you can look up the root word
in order to be able to conjugate it and
what the form is that's almost
impossible now jestro is really good if
you're looking for like names of plants
cities and Bevelle you know things like
that then I'll tell it to you but when
you have an actual word on the line that
you're trying to figure out that's just
not what it's so good so there been
other dictionaries that have come along
this try to help you but what they did
over here tamil to be odd though is
something that's really different what
they did is it's set up according to
every dolphin Shas and you go through
the particular word and it gives you the
translation of specific words that you
need they probably don't give you a
hockey Namie right now the kind of
things that a general words but the
words that on the duff now I was an
extremely successful Gomora Rebbe for
many years and I'm not saying that a my
own I'm just repeating what I heard from
my tell me them and what I used to do
when I was starting out is I'd have a
prep Shearer and we would go through the
DAF I get those who need it if your
skills were good enough you might need
this but I go through the diver I'd make
sure you know where the punctuation is
where does the lines start what is the
line and where is it fit in yeah
then I would just translate certain
terms or certain words that you may or
may not know
just to give you an idea now go and
prepare the kamar but if you have those
keywords it makes all the difference in
the world to being able to prepare the
be able to learn DAF Kumari and that is
what this is it's set up Lafitte adopted
move shots so that if you happen to be
learning Yuma how appropriate and your
uncuffed s on the base so it will
translate for you how position and hot
Cove and the neat Soto's give it to you
you may or may not know those words if
you do that's great if not listen I'm a
big proponent and learning tomorrow not
just reading a translation not just
going through that to take away from
that I think it's a wonderful thing but
you have to have Judaism as an open book
you have to be able to pull a safe off
the shelf and be able to learn it that's
as far as I'm concerned that's the ABCs
of Judaism and I can't tell you how many
tell me them I've met who've had such
terrible experiences with kumara and
they've just given up and to be able to
open up enough and give you those those
tools necessary to be successful I think
is just a tremendous thing so this dish
Canary covers all shots and a single
hardcover volume or you can get 25
softcover editions that are obviously
easier to schlep around for more
information visit the website Talmudic
calm and you can get a 10% discount off
the order of two or more volumes so you
and your Cobb Russa you know each have
your own copy and you can get the soft
cover individual machetes that are not
sold anywhere else if you're ordering in
Israel you contact Tom Udo Israel and
outlook.com
for a limited free delivery and it's a
wonderful thing we want to thank them
for sponsoring the show and it's nice to
have a product like this that obviously
understands the importance of what we do
here in the Rebbe alaskey show inspiring
people and individuals and I assume this
will be the first of many corporate
sponsors that are going
be contacting me and you know I'm
waiting of course for various you know
when the food Expo comes up so I'll be
cooking you know some of the things
coming along yeah speaking of which I
got a an email someone says you don't
give desserts
you don't give desserts it's true it's
true I don't give desserts the reason is
because my mother almost never made
desserts she said she'd make an apple
pie that was terrific I don't have the
recipe for it unfortunately we'd buy
cake at the bakery that was more than
enough cuz there was almost nobody left
at the table
nobody ever left the table to lay down
you would just slowly roll onto the
floor from your chair my mother would
serve for Antonia this is a reshammiya
half uh honeydew melon and then gefilte
fish she'd make her own gefilte fish it
the girl was the day to make it she
grind up the fish meat don't think it
was feather-light yet but just made
pieces like this you know then you have
a good filter fish then she made chopped
liver then she made stuffed cabbage then
she made fricassee yeah then she had
choice of soups she had cabbage soup and
if you got that it came with pigs of
lankan oh she had chicken soup and then
you could have either regular noodles or
healthy fat noodles and Chinese noodles
to put it into the soup and chicken my
father used to put in kasha yeah and you
had all that stuff into the soup and
then for the main course she would make
a turkey and a brisket with all the side
dishes to go with it with the turkey she
would make sweet potatoes and stuffing
and with the with the brisket she'd make
a potato cocoa and luxan kugel and and
creig's catch a virus I remember one
stuff so really there wasn't too many
people still at the table when it came
for I came from desert and by the way my
mother served the same thing at the
Seder now get my father ran the Seder
very quickly but as I you know got more
into things I would just took me longer
than say the Haggadah and the courses
would be lining up down the table I
don't know how anybody made it to the
afikomen but so we weren't we weren't
really big on desserts but I will tell
you the following it's not my recipe no
it's not my mother's recipe because like
I said we didn't make this in America
those you anneristo may not even know
what I'm talking about
in America there's a treat that they
make this time of year it's called
peggeleh and take a lot a little pieces
of dough that are fried in honey that
are stacked up in a little beehive shape
with baking cherries and
counter-intuitively nuts because we
don't usually eat that sunrise shoshana
analogous come a trio of egos as hate
and so it's sin and we don't want that
in there but that's how they make they
make it the whole things coming with
honey and you pull it apart and you eat
it and you find every cavity in your
mouth and it's incredibly painful I love
it so when I go to America if I'd have a
trip during ello I bring back peggle
already have it if not we would make it
ourselves
it is a patch gun you have to be deeply
dedicated to do this if not then I don't
know what to tell you I live in areas
show there's no take a look one year
Brooklyn bakery actually made tangela
you ever gone by teyla and they said it
was such a mess and so difficult they
never did it again the sacrifices I make
when I live in Israel because for some
reason they don't have any Jewish food
here I don't know why
kreplach you know America you going to
take our place and get kreplach anything
what here you can only get kreplach
on this special kreplach holiday
before Yom Kippur before hoshanah Rabbah
and before Purim
otherwise there's not a to be
found in this town and I say that if you
can make eight different salads out of
eggplant then you should be able to
provide kreplach for the Jews of Israel
but it's not there
likewise I can't get any prune
hamantaschen I don't want hamantaschen
with chocolate in it okay that's not a
hamantaschen that's a guy chocolate
cookie I didn't this year you know the
famous of arise man the brother of the
good of Madison where a discourse of
being this past year for Shabbos and
Irish even turbid Hasina and he's known
for course for his Navi sure and he
would which is really broadcast all
around the world and when his son
happened to be in my shear yeah Benji
was a good friend of mine if he's
watching this give him a shout-out and I
did this rant on there's no firm
hamantaschen now
oh well known fact that Reger iseman is
of course part of the famous Reisman
bakery family and that year before Purim
I got a giant box of prune hamantaschen
and I tell this story over all the time
because maybe one day I'll get more but
it's hard to mail the kreplach from
America because they you know they
probably go bad but you know I don't
know why it's so hard to get the Jewish
before take a lot so I have to make I
make tag la before we Shoshanna because
it's a sure thing
so I get the recipe from classic kosher
cooking by mrs. Sarah Finkel you can see
it this is so used it's taped together
already this is this is our go-to book
and she has a great recipe look at this
take a look really say that this is a
go-to I'm not saying that stop yeah and
it's we get the recipe from there for
those who are unaware
she would sometimes meet buffer and
she'd say will you learn says you know
in the mirror he says oh you know my son
Matt he's there
so he says Matt nan who you know not
Finkel he's a you know he's in charge
because you mean with nothing speak he
was nat Finkel in Chicago before he was
with no sand speak think old and this is
his mother's recipe this is our mother's
cookbook it's a knack anyway this is the
recipe old-fashioned Tagalog you can go
look it up for yourself
it is a patch kit and a half but there
is my suggestion if you're looking for a
dessert that's one of the few desserts
maybe before the circus I'll give you my
daughter's honey cake recipe that she
uses but like I said we we we never
baked when I was growing up there was
can buy such great stuff in the bakery
you know there's this woman told me she
was my son FS every Erev Shabbos to make
collars for her family and one week she
was whatever happened there was some
incredible she couldn't she bought
collars her children were so happy you
have to make really good college to you
know to beat some of these bakeries I
mean they they you get such good stuff
today there's so many cakes and cookies
and things but like I said when I was
growing up nobody was left at the table
when I came to dessert you know so I was
like we have all this stuff and then a
cup of tea oh yeah yeah but anyway
that's that's the you know so here's my
here's my honey cake recipe go to the
store buy honey cake and I call that my
easy honey cake recipe many event we're
coming out of her Shonda we're in the
Astaire's makes you and it's a time when
we have a special opportunity it's
brought down
and hallo ha that you take on Homer
during a serious match or something you
do not intend to keep doing the whole
year now why are we pulling a fast one
on a college bar oh ho
no because this is very important
yeah the Southwark akan says that we
went seven weeks in the desert till we
reach the point that we could stand a
tyrosine eye and experience a guillotine
ah but it says it was a Gilad screen at
the yam soup the splitting of the red
see that God revealed himself and it
says what a shift car what a slave saw
at the sea you Chris cope and Busey the
great navi the great prophet didn't see
sir Southwark says because sometimes the
coach burrow who lets you see the goal
before you there so I won it during the
first week of the year do something that
I can't keep up
I'll give you a simple example right
depends will you diamond but doing a
sales meet you over we have very long
sleepless and I normally go to a seven
o'clock minion and slickin starts at
6:20 except on some Gedaliah we start
6:15 yeah oh yeah I managed to put in a
few extra sleepless and and I get up
then I go and one year somebody said to
me you know if you went to darling
everyday at 6:15 or 6:20 you'd have much
more time in your day you'd have much
more of your morning I said that's true
but I would also die no then I I can't
do that the only way I get through a
sense my childre is with coffee now
having said that there was one year was
an of these things always happen enough
and somebody was talking to me and I
said I can't talk to you I got a I got a
have a coffee I didn't like the way that
sounded so I took him myself that I
wasn't gonna drink coffee from my
squirtle until after Yom Kippur and I
got through that sleepless without
coffee
okay but that was only because I was
trying to prove a point my natural
stubbornness carried me through but
normally I could do it I could do it for
we can get up very early for a long
sleep us during says me trooper I can't
keep that up the whole year so what am i
doing we're fooling the coach merical no
for one week we're showing ourselves I'm
capable of more I'm showing you
something you're not holding by yet but
you could you could you're just not
ready yet and that's okay that is more
than okay it's so nice to have a taste
of something that I'm not quite ready
for yet I grew up in a home that wasn't
shy my shop is when I was a kid we would
every now and then the school would take
us away to a community that were shava
shava shava
I was mind blowing that kid I was kid
I mean I became so much I was at 12 so
but so took men I was much younger
just to see it and I might not have been
ready to do it yet but I saw this now is
something that could be part of my life
and that's always important you have to
be able to see the destination where I'm
going so this week we're gonna try to
live life a little bit more than we
usually do it's the first week of the
year let's start off on our best foot
and we don't try to do something that's
impossible we try to take on something
that's a little bit harder for us to
keep yeah it's brought down and so on
our path Sock'em it might have been that
the Baker was not Jewish and okay all
the ingredients were kosher and the face
the key part but it was possum it was
big plane engine and and so at least
assessment Yuva you want to have pasta
so now here inherits show it's not such
a problem yeah because we have a lot of
juice
I mean America there are a lot of stuff
with good hash caucus that are baked
goods that are very very yummy yeah
full disclosure they are very yummy yet
so I don't want to take upon myself that
I'm never gonna handle them again I have
a nephew who relied on promotion
Feinstein in America and he ate things
with what relationship cause all of her
companies and it gets Myesha what we
called today they called static olive he
felt it was like a tequila in fact Rabbi
Frankel probably a good of a Long Island
put together a Contras of different
questions he asked with David Feinstein
and one of them was should a person be
mock bid if he normally realized over in
Russia should be marked with during a
serious mate shoe but not to have color
stamp and what David said no but Mercia
didn't hold it was a even so but
okay but yeah I'm at my table Brava yeah
so so he went to get married goes down
the Hopa and afterwards they went into
like the custom room you know in America
you know that the caller has a room and
Hudson has a room you know and in Eretz
show the cousin you know has as his room
it's called the it's called the hall and
kala has a room it's called the bathroom
and we're not when I quit is but the you
know so empty was his brother Tommy's as
he went into the room and just before he
went down to the chuppah he had his last
Kit Kat
they were the wrappers over there
because he was gonna take on after you
got married you know the keep hungry it
is less KitKat yet so okay there he says
my children people who may not be mocked
Mia and pass you throughout the whole
year during this week we take on a
little bit more we do something else
because it's it's such a special week
because birth was so close we want to be
better and listen you know many women
out there know that when their
mother-in-law is coming to visit they
clean the house in a way that's
different than the way that they clean
it normally because they mother was come
first time I met my future the autonomy
the cut cases who live in room at Beit
Shemesh there was nothing on any of
their counters I couldn't do that if I
wanted to I got enough room in my cabins
to hide everything
[Laughter]
yeah I remember what am i doing is when
she was dating you know so they picked
over the house and you know she has that
none of the children be around you know
it's like all the children were locked
in the back room until they were ready
to get more serious you know and then
they were allowed out they were so
excited yet but I could not hide
everything yet so when your mother was
coming you know yeah you try to clean on
a different level could who's right here
I want to stand a little taller I want
to speak a little nicer I want to put my
best foot forward put on my best face my
coach bro he's right here with us this
is this is the journey that we
experienced from Russia shun TM Kippur
the usual shall be Matsu he's right here
why would we let that opportunity slip
away
and so that's what we are it's so
interesting that some Gedaliah comes out
during assess my children because it's
really been related but you know
the story is the story is that after all
the Jews went into gullies the little
youth folks stayed behind never kind
that's it didn't even wanna you stay
here and he took Gedaliah who was a big
Sadiq I put him in charge and this was a
golden opportunity after the burn
and after the ghost for those Jews who
had such good excuses I never made it
cuz I didn't have a good job I never
made it cuz I have any money I didn't
make it cuz I didn't have any heroes I
didn't make it for this for that when
it's over I'm a victim of circumstances
everybody's gone it's yours you got the
run of the place sometimes you're going
to show there's no seats to be had and
telling us is not so many people you
know you get a whole road to yourself
you know that is probably one of the
greatest moments in a person's life when
they get onto the plane and it's mostly
empty get a whole row for yourself lie
down delightful but when you understand
that you have this opportunity
coach borrow who's right here so what
was what was some Gedaliah these people
had another chance they had everything
to themselves so what they do they
killed Gedaliah gotten through hunting
that's angry he came in XOS everybody
and that was the end that was the last
chance this week is that chance that we
have to be better and during the year we
have all kinds of things going on and
all kinds of problems and but this is
the week coach Burke was right there
with us he's got his arm around us
so how's it going a chance to be close
we want to be a little better don't have
to be perfect
I don't wanted to be perfect trust me
think of me a lot of years but the
person to be perfect this guy once said
to me I feel like a perfect idiot
I said nobody's perfect I try to be
perfect I don't have to be perfect
the my goal this year is to be better
and the goal for assessment rumor is I
put on the tie for the picture I'll comb
my hair if you happen to be one of those
people don't usually do that you know
I'll make sure that I tuck in my shirt
I'm gonna look as good as I can because
Chris Burke was right here with me
that's a serious my children such an
opportunity how the coach Bofill gives
us he's right here and he's gonna stay
with us till Yom Kippur close close
close he's coming closer and closer
every day we're coming out of Russia
shut up
we blue chauffeur and a Kurdish bar who
moved till the key said then to the keys
they are after him and now he's in a
generous mood mercy he wants you he's
come down he's come to you he's
mentioned more than halfway he went all
over this room I have all the way down
here with you now's not the time to
ignore him that's what it's lit blaze it
means when he says if you don't do too
but now when a cruise brokers come all
the way to you that level of apathy is
that's not a Jewish heart can't you
can't be that empathetic better care
couch bar was there and this is hard for
us because
don't believe in God don't take that the
wrong way but I'll prove it to you you
davon e ba ha ha oh my god I mean that's
you well yeah would you think you were
domine - nobody go ahead ok Avraham I
remember an Omaha boy I love that guy
ok it's luck you know he was ready to
give up his life for me now ok I have to
tell you this is really uncomfortable
well one second you know I was always
standing there not really
now if you go down Brooke I thought
shamon God's standing like oh hi let me
keep going ok yeah and it it doesn't
affect you
that's why mace is from the word nice
Sian because when a miracle takes place
it's real hard to doubt her cutters
burger whose existence and because of
that we we feel more of a sense of like
wow as janice made true ver is that well
it's that mace as the torah says we go
into russia shun a confident that i Shem
will make an ace for us and save us this
is this is that time of year so mister
Shem we are gonna take advantage of this
time don't let opportunity slip away or
as my father said to me once when I
turned down one what he considered to be
really golden opportunity he said to me
when opportunity knocks you have to open
the door he said opportunity is knocking
a Kurdish burrows right here let's take
advantage of his presence for us to be
able to turn our life into the life that
we want it to be and that's it for this
week first year of the year for his
podcast of the essay whoops for a show
of the year
forgot myself for a moment and that's it
I'm gonna find out more about the show
you go to reveal Alaska calm you can
find about
events you could contact me you could
make a comment you could sponsor an
episode go to the sled rugby Alaska that
come slash podcast click on the sponsor
an episode and you two would have an
opportunity perhaps to sponsor the
memory of somebody or to push a product
or services yeah we we will work with
corporate sponsors at this point anyway
so that's about it that's it for this
edition of the real a ski show
I'm Deborah Orlowski and this is the
raviolo ski show
