hello everybody this is Sookie and this
is the revlon ski show I'm sorry it's
right after / my head is killing me
it was really just an excuse to show off
my new revenue ski show mug which a big
sadiq who wishes to remain anonymous got
this for me because he felt that this
was important for the show and he also
those of you who are technolog s-- will
probably notice that the sound quality
has increased dramatically Casillas
abroad has a new microphone and he
doesn't want to be mentioned in fact he
mentioned in an email that he's actually
burnt off the tips of his fingers so
that he should not be identified but I
would
he's also the person who filmed my
episodes in America so a big shout out
yeah cuz I'm always surprised that there
are people who enjoy these little shout
outs in fact I got an email from a guy
named Joe in Lakewood who said what do I
have to do it again a shout-out I said
what do you want me to say say just
mention Joe from Lakewood the big bow be
talking okay Joe and we want to welcome
you to the show whether you are
listening unto her anytime or wherever
you listen to your podcast so watch your
podcast we're definitely happy to have
you along and we have our sponsorship
this week it's a reforged lame up for
you know showed up at the ben alta Yenta
we ask everybody to please have them in
your thoughts and in your prayers and
it's a sham that should have and mr.
before and that's it we are moving along
moving along now we have to firm we're
on our way to Pesach there was a
suggestion from a few different people
that we should maybe do some special
podcasts for the week before Pesach
leading up to it since people are going
to be frantically cleaning if you're
lucky if you're unlucky you will be
frantically packing
to go away to a hotel I have gone away
to hotels and I have stayed home and I
definitely think packing up is much
harder but bear in mind I have eight
daughters yeah so we used to have an
entire room just for everybody's luggage
that was a job in itself I did mention
this already
my mother last pay so she went to go to
Orlando so normally if you stay home
there's a lot of cooking and a lot of
shopping in a lot of cleaning a lot of
serving if you go away a lot of packing
and a lot of schlepping and your whole
life is upside down and if you rent a
house in Orlando you get to do all of
that and we got to do everything the
packing this thing it was special but so
during that week when people were either
packing with people cleaning or whatever
it is then maybe we have a series of
special podcast so you know give me a
little shout out tell me if that's
something you think people might be
interested in and if anybody wants to
sponsor a special getting ready for a
pacer podcast I might I might do some
things on the seder because I used to
give a on how to give a successful
seder so maybe we would do a little
things on that but you know you know how
to contact us remember Loski dot-com
slash contact will repeat that at the
end of the podcast but it was an idea
there's an idea okay this week now we
are well into viagra and Vayikra is one
of my favorites for him because nobody
learns it unless your cabeza brisker
most people don't like this I when I was
teaching in seminary I had an extra hour
at one point and they said what do you
want to teach I said I'll teach me okra
now it's amazing I've gone around to
girls high schools around America I used
to speak in high schools and and I'd say
okay high school ninth grade tenth grade
11th grade 12th grade what do you learn
voracious schmoes permit bizarre every
place I went to a hypnotist made this
guy forget the number of five they don't
count to ten one two three four six
seven eight nine ten
so that's why you gray you figure is the
number five every woman hypnotized into
forgetting about so when people do learn
via Krupp
they learn parshas code ocean and all
those kind of things so I suggest that I
would teach a class on via grow so
really what are you gonna do I said
first semester cut Jim second semester
terrace and and to me I think that this
is such a fascinating area because
because when I was younger I was younger
so I had an innate fear of cut Jim
Congress like most people and also is
right these are the things we learned so
I remember I was learning with a cover
ISA and they came up so siggy ins I am
and I couldn't figure out was
agricultural stuff you know and after
that we came to a SIGINT iris and I was
like now I would skip this he goes oh
this is also agricultural stuff I said
no it's worse it's Paris yet but you
work on it so I said the first one we
need to cut Jim's like I'm gonna do the
timid Tyra because everything here is
important and I give this example
because I think I think it's it's such a
dramatic example and it's from this
week's partial partial meaning and that
is the concept of math Sheeran now you
always use this when I want to bring an
example of how everything in Torah is
relevant and connected so here's the
question let us take the liquidus dead
Sherrod's which always pops up whenever
we want to talk about two men Tyra yeah
his dead shariats falls on apples
hanging on the tree do the apples become
tummy
oh yeah your responses no they don't why
cuz they're Marla Concord they attach to
the ground there's only something as
attached it doesn't become talking okay
you pick the apples you put them in a
basket and a dead share it's falls on
top of it now what are they Tommy no
because they do not become Tommy
unless they become wet intentionally
okay so you decide what would make these
apples really yummy is orange juice or
orange juice
anyway you come from but orange juice so
you take orange juice and you pour it
all over and then you dry them and a
dead chair it's falls on top of it do
they become tell me now
no because orange juice is not a liquid
it's very yummy but it's not a liquid
only seven things are considered liquids
and they are known by the mnemonic
device of yad show hot damn you're this
yayan wine dolly is vash which is honey
shin is chemin just oil this is call of
which is milk Tess is tau which is due
the last Dollard is Dom is blood blood
is a liquid can buy in shuffle the dummy
combined yet dalit and mam is my M it's
interesting the last thing in the list
is actually water these are so I put my
fruit outside they get covered with Dew
and then I dry them and then the dead
sure it's falls on it it's not tummy I
didn't want to do it has to be
intentional but I wash off my apples so
they should be nice and clean and then I
dry them and now a dead sure it's falls
on it to become Tommy an obscure halakha
right one that doesn't really pop up too
often I was in show laughter my roof
rabbi mordechai Kornfeld from the duff
yummy advancement institute comes to me
and he says nothing is a coincidence
recked there are seven masks in seven
liquids and there are seven Young told
him five from the Torah and to Madeira
Bona two from the rabbi's Rosh Hashanah
Yom Kippur
so kiss pays off and schwas and with the
Rabanne on is of course Hanukkah and
Purim so he says if there are seven
Moscone it makes sense that there are
seven holidays that correspond to them
now I'm not gonna go into this in too
much detail suffice it to say I
developed the sheer on every one of
these liquids and how they tie into that
particular holiday maybe pace up we'll
talk about before Pesach but if you
think about it you can line them up it's
really not that hard okay give you a
little time till the next podcast could
try to work it out on your own
but the amazing idea here is and by the
way every time I say this over to a
tongue holcomb they add another insight
into it which is just absolutely
brilliant I'm making more of an effort
to translate I I tend to speak sometimes
in she wishes broccoli wrap is granted
directly and I mentioned last time that
I got a email from a non Jewish person
who watches this podcast and he wrote me
back he appreciated the shout out and
he's actually gonna be making hallelujah
and and I've gotten emails from people
who are not yet religiously observant
but find this subject fascinating so I
tend to forget sometimes to translate
terms and the amazing thing is that a
yeshiva guy considered me like Lamesa it
was mama suga Volvic and he thinks that
English isn't your mind it's it's
English you know it's it's a tricky
thing you pick up you can pick up this
bra my father used to tell the story
about this little old lady she go
the idea this just named me finally
someone says y'all versus the time how
do you say open the window
open the window putting on an accent
there's not necessarily qualify for room
knowledge at the language Steve Martin
who was meeting back in the seventies
and I says he goes to France I'd like to
go to the hotel please and the guy goes
you just write the de jure I was like
what's that you're saying so the first
thing you do is you tried an exit I
would like to go to Zod please it
doesn't really help you but anyway so
I'm making more of an effort to try to
translate these things but I'm sure you
can line these up two liquids together
with the various holidays if you give it
a little thought yeah we'll talk about
it we'll talk about it we got gosh well
we have a half-hour except for our
special permission which I'm sure you
saw and we only got through here for the
material cuz the battery's all burnt
there but anyway so so you have to find
relevance now I gave a Sheeran parshas
meaning many years ago and I called it
pata Romania iris marriage Gopi of
cadavers nos for those who are not
familiar with your neighbors does it
means to be going to us it means to
steal somebody's mind is a chimera zonka
neighbors that such an hour to trick
somebody those you were doing defy me
the the folio page of the Talmud a day
so we just had cameras on his diocese I
can't do something to trick you
so the Camargue use examples like invite
somebody to come to your house when you
know they can't come or you have to open
up a barrel of wine anyway so you're
like huh you're here let me open up his
barrel wine is if I'm doing a few it's
good name is Dawson yet I'm doing it I'm
doing it just to trick you the prime
example of this and I've been in this
situation I'm sure
people have as well you were supposed to
meet somebody someplace and you forgot
people forget we talked about that two
weeks ago yeah
people forget so the guy calls you the
next day and you suddenly remember you
were supposed to meet at me like oh my
gosh you know I know you're trying to
think how to explain it you know you
don't just say yeah I forgot about you
so guy calls up and he says I'm so sorry
you know I know you must been waiting a
long time I got caught up and I never
showed up now you have that moment where
you can say I was okay as long as you
can Avis dies the ever since to say it's
okay I wasn't able to make it yeah but
I've seen people you know do even worse
where they yeah where they say yeah yeah
listen I waited but you know if so well
I just gave up what was I supposed to do
[Laughter]
it's interesting but nothg enables now
as you know this is this is old old
names I know people don't really know it
but it's a fascinating story yeah Don
Rickles who was a comedian he was
friendly with Frank Sinatra who was a
famous singer who was much more famous
than he was but they were friends so one
time they were in a restaurant and
Sinatra was having dinner with some
friends and he was out with this girl
that he was gonna marry you know so he
goes over the Sinatra and he says listen
man you know I'm with this girl I'm
dating her I think I might marry and I
want to impress her so maybe you could
stop by and say hello
sure anyway he finishes merely walks
places hey Dad how you doing he goes
Frank can't you see I'm eating over here
use it use it specifically to be able to
try to make yourself look more
impressive important than you are
yeah but with my Shapiro once said in
the shear until the story and it's show
whenever she was coming to bushel I am
where he's coming to they take out an ad
in the paper one of the front papers so
no I rebola
ear and you know scientists tell me and
it came out that this one guy took out
the ED himself mystically but you know
people try to get it so I I called the
ship pottery mania and a number of
people came because I thought it was
about Harry Potter and it wasn't it was
about a clay Ferris earthenware vessel
I'm using the ice-covered vessel I don't
know why they translate Calum as vessel
a vessel is boat people use it for
utensils dishes coded message that but
it's a type of something that's made out
of earthenware and the dinner is that if
it becomes Tom a there's no way it
becomes ritually impure there's no way
that you can Matata it you can't purify
it you can't put it the Bigfoot can't do
anything you just have to break it so
the break and and that's what I really
wanted to talk about the special dinner
of a cliche reason why it was that way
there was some people very upset me they
said I'm never coming back then I
thought it was just clever I try to find
clever clever terms to use I'm not
trying to hurt anybody I look for clever
ideas maybe used to say I don't come to
you sure but I just like to watch the
titles so clever yet I thought this was
a clever title think I felt that I
misled them pottery mania but but here's
what's fascinating people come to Israel
and they go around these ancient sites
and they find broken pieces of pottery
they sneak them in their luggage they
think that their integrities smugglers
bringing out these piece
is broken pottery so let me just
disabuse you of this pottery was
basically the disposable dishes of their
type it's like you found the plastic
fork
but that's what pottery was it was used
and broken it was understood there were
maybe millions of pottery vessels and
all the broke broke a battery don't be
too impressed with yourself yet but but
that finally brings me to what I want to
talk about this week was my way of
introduction yeah and that's the
following I want you to take a moment to
reflect on this idea disposable plates
disposable things right we all know how
incredibly important this is we know
it's important you can go into a paper
goods store and see somebody sprawled on
the floor with a napkin and a plate and
silverware and they're trying to arrange
things in just the perfect color
coordination everything has to be just
perfect there's probably nothing in this
world more transient than paper goods
yeah designed to be used and thrown away
but tremendous amount of effort is put
in put into it okay let's be Malamud
squizz you're making sure brokers and
makalah that's legit open parenthesis
there was a big issue here years ago
where there were these people who
collected stuck of money I think and
they bought a Rolls Royce
I brought a Rolls Royce so that the
hustle and Kalla could drive away in our
little choice and there was a big
discussion was this legitimate was this
not legitimate and you know and
and there were those people who said
must be Miss America's gonna come
interestingly enough in order to be able
to bring in a Rolls Royce you have two
rolls-royce dealership you'll be
surprised that many years ago in Israel
there was not a large demand for
rolls-royce could be today - it's a
certain level car somebody told me they
knew some with the rolls-royce they were
driving out in the middle nowhere and
their muffler fell off and he made his
way to her to a service station garage
and he the guy looks at me says I don't
have parts for a rolls-royce so he calls
rolls-royce a half an hour later a
helicopter lands with the new muffler
and instructions how to install it
wow that's unbelievable and yes the
person I wished oh you who says you'll
take it up with rolls-royce so he called
rolls-royce several times and they
wouldn't they wouldn't respond to me
sent them letters so finally he got
ahold of somebody he says listen I was
driving around nowhere and my muffler
fell off and rolls-royce sent a person
with a helicopter with a part and I'm
trying to find how much I owe and he
said sir this never happened no no I
could thank the service station there I
wasn't complicated landed he says sir
mufflers don't fall off of Rolls Royces
[Laughter]
so you can imagine a car of that caliber
was not in great demand over here in
Israel so they convinced some guy from a
different auto dealership to register
himself with rolls-royce so that they
could bring in this one rolls-royce
years later the Israeli army decided to
buy rolls-royce engines for their for
their airplanes and they contacted
rolls-royce so they said well you have
to go to the local dealership says what
dealership this guy one rolls-royce the
army comes in to bite housands of
rolls-royce motors from him yeah and
people say no good deed goes unpunished
look at that look how beautiful that is
yet sometimes the good guys win anyway
so you're picking up the paper goods for
the hosting college maybe some mythical
husband color is very nice yet paper
cuts are ridiculously expensive you can
buy very high-class paper goods all
different types now listen this story
isn't the only thing I wanted to talk
about this weekend this guy made a shot
of Chef rockers and he went out and he
bought glass dishes and he bought
flatware inexpensive flatware real
glasses real glass dishes for the meals
okay to step up real glasses and reals
so a real flat where it was it's over
but real flatware stainless steel flower
it's still considered more harsher than
the question of paper goods
anyway he served all the meals at the
end of Shabbos he put them in garbage
bags and threw him away and everybody
went crazy
so were you throwing it away it's
perfectly good he says if I spent more
money on paper goods and threw it away
you would have no time sorry but I did
this because it was cheaper than buying
nice paper goods and now you have a
tight on me and nobody could explain why
this was so disturbing yeah so the
answer is I think deep down everyone of
us understands that we live in a
terribly disposable society the Gomorrah
and shabbos discusses how much you have
to carry out in order to be 5 yeah how
much of a thing is considered valuable a
broken piece of pottery is considered a
clay on Shabbos if you could use it to
put on the top of a bottle as it as a
cap
how big a piece of cloth is considered
to be macabre to me that still
considered a claw at the net Chester a
shred so it depends for a regular person
312 m by three talking for a per person
3x but oh by 3 it's bowed three fingers
by three fingers a little rank because
there was a time when you didn't waste
my father when he passed away and his
basement they were broken toasters
broken radios broken tape because he
couldn't throw me they well you'll fix
it you'll fix it I had a tape recorder
IKS tape recorder that I was using to
record my sure and once upon a time and
it broke it was a Sony I brought it to
Sony and they said doesn't pay to fix I
said why is it so good typically guess
what I'm gonna charge you to fix this
you could buy yourself a new tape
recorder that's more mature clothes and
a higher level it's a better piece of
equipment
I had a printer a color printer you know
laser printer it was great and I had to
go and buy cartridges and I went to the
store to buy cartridges and I said you
know they don't really make this print
anymore the cartridges are somewhat
expensive I said yeah but I I got the
print that's a good printer and he said
to me what you're going to pay for two
cartridges for a black-and-white and a
color cartridge for that same amount of
money you could buy a new printer that's
faster and has a fax and is a scanner
and comes with two cartridges I said
what do I do with the old predict let's
throw it away I said but it works the
ink will be too expensive it's not worth
it I held on to that printer for two
years
I tried to give it away nobody wanted it
because everyone made the same Frenchman
that this guy in the in the angst or
said it'll cost us more money for the
cartridges and it will for that and
eventually I just took it and threw it
away and it bothers me to this day
because we just get rid of things we can
we can dispose of everything things
don't have any value my I don't know if
I told this story or not you know my
father's parents were very poor and when
my mother passed away so my father got
her payoff plate and her matzo plate he
brought him in what was called at the
time a five-and-dime
these stores like like a Woolworths you
could buy things for five cents and ten
cents they buy cheap there were these
two cheap glass things with like little
printed pictures of Pesach on it you
know those were her that was a seder
plate then and I'm not to put she paid a
nickel stun yeah we used to changeover
and Pesach we used to clean up for
Pesach none of that scared anybody the
one who had to carry those plates up
from the Pesach cabinet up the stairs
every step was like the last mile
because it was understood my father
never spelled it out but it was
understood and if you break those plates
you don't have to offer any explanation
just leave just take your things and go
and and this was like it was like
nothing and today you you can go to
places where they just throw away the
most amazing things twisting my garbage
you'll need him who needs him anymore
it has been observed by better people
than me that this has extended over into
our personal lives things don't have
value we can dispose of things we can
dispose of people we can dispose of time
we can dispose of
money people spend money on things that
is just just astounding it's astounding
when you think how valuable things are
we all know this yaagh Raveena risked
his life to go back at night to get the
pocket on him because to its addict his
money is his cost timez's life there was
an article in the jewish observed on the
shelf at the time this was the only you
know her ad publication that existed and
this Rebbe wrote a letter to the editor
and he says at the end of the year I
have a big box in my room with mittens
and gloves and scarves and sweaters and
boots and winter coats that nobody comes
to clean if you remember those like
Nursery Rhyme you bad little kittens
you've lost your mittens and now you
have no separate a kid leaves his winter
coat someplace mother says where's your
code because I don't know
no problem just just get rid of it I was
giving away old clothes I must have told
this story I was giving away old clothes
and to this one come on
I'm bringing the boxes mama says I can't
give this to somebody to where we only
take top-quality clothes she picks up a
jacket she says look at this I can't ask
a poor person to wear this I said good
because that's my jacket I just took it
off so that I could carry in the boxes
the business would you telling me is
what I'm wearing now isn't that good
enough for really with the tops with the
top with the best it's a pity we have to
learn to appreciate what we have in our
lives everything is precious you didn't
get anything that you don't need in this
world and if you
of it that means that occurs Berto who
is going to ask you to do something with
it
there's gonna come some purpose for that
so let's think twice before we dispose
of things and people in our lives
because you never know when they're
gonna come in handy that's it for this
