hello and welcome to the rabbi Orlovsky
show this is Yakko Yakko an auskey
special USA edition of the Rebbe
Aronofsky's show tour anytime or Apple
podcast or iTunes or on the site rabbi
Orlovsky calm thank you for being with
us today
the good thing about a show that only
has a last name is that anyone that
carries the last name could really carry
the show so today I'm gonna be hosting
the show today
Yakko Yakko Alaska like I said and we're
gonna have a special guest today
now I just want to start by saying this
is not a show this is in fact a sheer I
don't know what was going on till now
here but there's a new sheriff in town
and we're gonna call this a sheer so
take out your pens and papers because
there's gonna be a lot of Magna Commons
going on so just please be be prepared
before we start with that I first wanna
introduce my first and only guest today
he's a world-renowned speaker a father
husband grandfather it's my father rabbi
thank you for joining our show today
thank you I'm excited to total I was
hoping to sew on this on this edition of
the perm show yes a lot of people see
you as rabbi Lasky how you are today
funny of hours Oh funny
[Laughter]
what we don't speaker travel the world
you had many jobs and people people
think maybe you're just born into it but
in fact that comes with a lot of hard
work there's a lot of history from the
beginning till now and let us see out
the dish mine for sure God has really
given me more than you know of the sake
deserve to the untrained eye I
definitely got more than I've been very
very good to me but it did not come
without hard work and a lot of self
making from the beginning till today and
I thought maybe in this show yes we
could start by even though you spoke a
lot about yeah so everyone who's been
watching all the episodes knows you
spoke about bits and pieces of well your
family your upbringing throughout the
history your career but I wanted to try
to do a little bit like trying to put
into proportion and try to see a whole
picture okay of the whole thing so we'll
start from the beginning 1959 you're
born ten o'clock in the morning January
January 12 12 to cold snowy day cold
snowy day shortly before my father went
bankrupt you're born to Martin and
Stella Orlovsky in the fifth out of six
boys amazing amazing that my father was
determined to have he doing one of the
dozen kids he wanted a large family to
this day it's a mystery to me why is it
always a lot of kids and we had six boys
which back then was can
bizarre you know there's so many
children yeah I was number five number
five you grew up in North Merrick Long
Island but most people never heard of
North America Merrick is wealthy and
Jewish North America is poor and
chemically and that's where I grew up so
there were very few Jews around and it
gave me a different perspective
definitely on life now you grew up
within a family who you would call
religious non-religious traditional that
is such a great question
that's a great question um the easy
answer is it was not reversed what it's
not true you know I asked my father once
what over with Orthodox the
Conservatives won now we went to a
concern of synagogue that's all there
wasn't so he my Frye said we're
conservative now my father works
Saturday he grew up with no indication
he dropped out of school
a Jewish education he dropped out of
school after eighth grade to help
support his family during the Depression
and he had a flower shop and the busiest
day was Saturday so he felt he had to go
for an awesome so I said someone said
what I always say this is we're
conservative so I said did you know that
conservative also says you have to keep
Shabbos he says okay we're reformed now
this was very interesting because people
used to give themselves labels not based
on their philosophy but on their levels
of observance so if you kept 30% your
reforms 60% your conservative 90% you
were Orthodox a hundred percent you a
physician that's that work that's why
you can have terms like conservatives
75% performative 43% you know and so
depending on what you did that's where
you went so the easy thing to say is
well my father and King Shabbos II
wasn't religious but we're talking about
somebody who after you went bankrupt
sent most of his kids to yeshiva you
always gave minded stock up
well that's our cue thank you for being
here with us in this show the Bell
you're the bells what's happening so but
he so this is what's important is it
every person has a disconnect between
what they believe and what they do right
there's always a disconnect there are
people when I was mushiya and he is
Shiva
I used to say guys listen this is a
serious issue but you don't want to get
up in the morning and you don't want to
learn it
yeah at night this is right I said well
why don't you go to yeshiva X he says
that's for bums
I said back that you were bum because
you don't like it but I don't want to be
any issue for buzz I said ah you want to
be an issue with good guys and be above
this is right because otherwise I'll be
influenced by the other bums so there's
always a disconnect between people
between what they believe and what they
actually do so if I was to look at my
father
hush goofily he was an Orthodox Jew he
was a non-practicing mother nitrogen and
when I say non-practicing I mean I was
something is hidden keep Shabbos but he
kept a kosher home and he gave a lot
it's stuck going and he and he worked
hard too I mean when I was a little kid
I had no even would've met my father
said to me Humera shakes up yeah the
well I didn't know what his chicks it
wasn't underwear will was I was like
okay my father believed in these things
these things were very important here
but he didn't have an education and he
felt they had no choice there was a
generation that felt they had to work on
Chavez so if you say was my it was my
house my house was not shomer Shabbos
but I think my parents were deeply
religious well there are things you you
think that when you grow up from a
religious point of view that were very
points of them that you could remember
that there was the strong points by them
my father would come home from work on a
Friday night didn't matter what time it
was
and he made kiddush he would go in the
kitchen of watch and I was washed but
here
why he'd come back he'd make a booty and
we'd sit down and never shy Masuda yeah
that was always something was very
important if you walked around the house
in your socks you got a smack what do
you want me to die that my father was a
sign of a Bayliss that was something you
didn't don't you know and I said this to
other people I've met other people who
grew up the same way no
shabbos yeah but it's not like the worst
thing you could possibly do how would
how our youngsters oh my gosh well
virtually of kippur we we always want to
show interesting enough he would he
drove her Shoshana but we walked on Yom
Kippur give me any would turn on lights
or anything you know nothing on onion
kid that was he he felt it very serious
this was a walk it was a mile when when
I became from a 12 so I was walking to
the to the synagogue for my bar mitzvah
and relatives kept pulling up offering
me rights so I didn't take any thank you
anyway but but they don't think twice
about it you know everybody official
that was so but on Rosh Hashanah we'd
come home and and my father would Colin
honey apple and honey and then it was a
meal that was bizarre
in the extreme I can't even put it into
words
yeah my mother would make it further but
she spent an entire day making gefilte
fish it was Federline enormous it was
the most amazing thing ever
yeah first you know this enormous piece
of gefilte fish then she had stuff
character that she made herself then she
made without a big plate of chopped
liver and my mother was very particular
about this there had to be a lettuce
leaf and then you put the chopped liver
and then slices of cucumber slices of
tomato and a ring of green pepper
and a radish flower when we first got
married you know I used to want to serve
chopped liver and my you know my wife
wasn't so happy about it because I was
so involved and finally she said I don't
want the chopped liver but my mother
yeah up liver sometimes she'd have
fricassee and then you can't the soup
she made two types of sushi cabbage soup
and she made chicken soup
you took the chicken soup and then it
came with either Alfred noodles or
regular noodles
there was kasha there was Chinese
noodles soup the soup mandolin and by
the time we reached the main course it
was bizarre so he came to the main
course and then she had an entire
brisket an entire Turkey and it was
sweet potatoes that went along with
turkey and stuffing and with the brisket
there was roast potatoes and they were
stemis and dessert was about $300 worth
of bakery cake I put a lot of emphasis
on the is it just me or every time
elapses get together somehow it becomes
all about the food I'm just you know it
was we didn't even get to eat like like
crazy and like that and it was let's
just say that they didn't look the way
that I looked for most of my life from
eating carrot sticks and the Seder you
know that my father came home from work
because it was like Easter time which
was very busy in the flower business and
he would come home he could go from
Kadesh to the meal in 20 minutes boom
and then the meal was the same kind of
real there was two types of soup there
was risky
then turkey enough and there was you
know and I took me longer because I was
you know what and the courses would line
up so yeah there was definitely nervous
to some food to my house you would say
they love the matzo brei I haven't given
out a recipe in a while so for those of
you Iike brough those of you don't eat
your props just pretend this never
happened but my mother would take two
and a half Montes machine monsters and
break them up and then put him in a
strain and put hot water over them just
so off them and drain it out and then
she would put it into a mixing bowl with
four eggs I think if I remember the
proportions you have to play around a
little bit and mix it up with a little
salt and then bake it like a like a big
pancake and you have to cover it on the
top so that when it gets cooked enough
you can flip it this was always the
thing my father would do the matzo boy
flip it over on the other side it comes
out golden and delicious my mother's
last Pesach we spent together and you
know the whole family and everybody
would go out and I would stay home with
my mother make matzo brei I'd make an
egg cream those you don't know what that
is it's basically chocolate milk with
seltzer
but they have to make it right you know
my mother had a matzo brei and sugar my
favorite things there are two she just -
she is my mother I think used to put you
know
sure some people food sort something
with sugar something puts here I don't I
don't want to be today they say miss
Gunkel adores no stop putting cheese and
sour here don't yet on my mother made it
okay
you want to come an eye on with these
newfangled things you know
that was a matzah fight you know and I'm
staying with my sister-in-law Shelly she
told me that they went once to Florida
and she went to the guy who was sitting
there making the eggs in the hotel inton
you're gonna make me a matzo brei I know
they don't make it the guy made it and
then everyone Minds it but that's that's
how you make about to my real mother my
mother-in-law and I'm not judging here
but she makes it scrambled like
scrambled eggs and matzah my
mother-in-law they don't broke so matzah
in one room the mix shut up all right
so we're gonna move on a little bit I
see I'm not gonna be able to go through
everything but let's try to get some key
key times you went to school in Hebrew
can be a hassle panting yeah started in
first grade at five
f-fine I was five years old it's my
birthday is in January but I was too
smart to go to kindergarten so your
skin.i skip kidding I really feel to
this day with those pieces of paper with
like chunks of wood still in it you know
yeah I didn't do I want to sort of read
about how how come you guys that Center
yeshiva day school but I want to jump
all the way to the end all right so
eighth grade don't jump to the end yet
yeah I just turned 16 you're giving away
the whole thing to the end I don't know
goodbye I realize now this is my let's
just say he's never coming on a show
alright so a trade yeah 12 years old
oh my god and you have a Rebbe Rabbi
we'll never Yaakov will that's right
talk to me a little bit about how how he
influenced oh boy now yeah I've never
Stannis in seventh grade I was I was you
know troublemaking so don't make I
thought I finally started to get some
social recognition you know I got thrown
out once cuz I wouldn't get a haircut
you know my hair was too long
and seventh grade and I started right
because I was friends with this other
kid Chemical I don't know whatever
happened to him but we were friends for
a while and they hang out this thing
called Razzles no reservoir they're a
candy but when you chew him up they tend
to go alright so they had this extremely
annoying commercial Razzles of gum no
rasuls of candy yes anyway so I so KOCO
had some Razzles chewing them up now
this rabbi couldn't stand it if you chew
gum incisors
you cannot chew gum in my class I said
that's what's not a government you can't
be technical
no it's a gum no it's a candy no it's a
guy we got the whole class going you got
so exciting work that so there's an Olaf
ski who misbehaved in school anyway so
that was more or less why was it so good
now during the minion me and my other
Ellen Harris we had a tour kissing
contest to see as they bring guitar back
okay kissing and there was a revenue in
the school ribbon will he was very heavy
he was bald and he had this high-pitched
voice anything another down and he was
loaded the fanatic in the school I think
we were kissing this to her and suddenly
this hand grabs me and drags me out and
destroys my said I think the down
banjaara and I was absolutely terrified
well I come in eighth grade chemical was
going I come to eighth grade and my
revenues are the will and we sit down
now you have to understand until then
all the classes were a brick bit of rate
the idea being that not only would you
learn punished and Navi and halakhah and
historia everything else you'd also
learned if read but if you didn't pick
up the imprint you would learn nothing
and that was the track that I was on
complex a nothing for all those years
because I just didn't know what was
going on I just thought so I said that
in everything wells class I'm like oh my
gosh no I have a fanatic of the school
the shul and he says ok boys you all
know me he says I haven't lost any
weight from last year I haven't grown
any hair from last year and my views on
life haven't changed either
and I thought oh my goodness this is a
real human being this person is willing
to poke fun and himself he's willing to
talk about life I was astounded and then
some kid reasoning because hey kid you
speak English right in America I tell
you I was ready to applaud I couldn't
believe it because everybody know to
play the game and even choose to play
the game and he told me yours ladies is
what am I going to sit down talking to
rich fool and I know none of the kids
understand what I'm saying it's more
important to me now
it was this trick with Reverend whale
that everyone knew that if you didn't
feel like learning you just say I told
you anyway
and he'd go on his read for 20 minutes
about teresina and as the years went by
I realized he was waiting for this
because this wasn't part of the
curriculum he was supposed to cover this
amount the businessman there's none of
that but he pretended to be shocked by
the questions but he did it in order to
be able to get us to hear the true -
that's what his whole goal was now he
made himself as a fanatic what was
fascinating I didn't find this out until
I graduated years later he had actually
gone to NYU Law School and his first job
as a lawyer he was he was starting out
and his boss who was Jewish talk to you
know go to the restaurant you know Dinah
and pick him up a cheeseburger he says I
can't system well you don't get me my
lunch you're fired
it says can't know what fighter so he
said no he just he's graduating law
school he says so what am I gonna do I
just got another job don't happen again
he went to liquid whereof Aaron was and
he said pennilyn Wow and and he came in
his wife had a master's in English
literature he was his mother was the
famous mrs. whale dr. whale in Borough
Park who was this woman pediatrician
they were very educated they were very
with it but he came in and he knew that
he had to become sort of a caricature to
shake people up and he would always say
this Longo's you you can love me or hate
me but you'll never forget me
because I'm not gonna let you just sit
there I'm gonna shake you up and that
was his goal he had a bunch of these
apathetic Long Island kids in the 70s
who didn't care about anything and
everybody was apologetic and I read this
and he says this is what the Torah says
if you don't like it tough well I saw
this is a personal challenge because I
forget so myself is something
an intellectual and I could argue very
well but I was very well-read and
acquainted and I would raise different
points and stuff and he would just cut
me to pieces and I was unaccustomed to
this so I would go and I would speak to
concern rabbis and to the other people
know their questions and stuff and I'd
come back in and he just cut me up the
pieces and I realized at some point oh
my gosh this is true and I remember I
said to my friends I said let's fight
with this guy he's and they said just
ignore him he's a fanatic I said but
what if he's right
they said ignore him anyway I couldn't
do that cuz if it's true it's true let
me let me just say say about them
because they're being sincere being what
we call it by Seamus this is something
that you also raised us to me even
though I got in trouble in school
questions with teachers and stuff and
this is something that where did this
come from that it was always stronger
than if it's true you're gonna do what's
true and you're gonna do what's right
because it's right and you don't care
about what people think you don't care
about what people do we have to just be
sincere and do it because it's the right
thing
I definitely got it from my father my
father was you know he was on a tour and
Scandinavia my father's story is our
third Scandinavia and they're sitting at
this table but they were sitting yet and
my mother had left her sweater on the
table and this waiter evidently threw it
on the floor so he was this large Aryan
looking fellow and gigantic like
Schwarzenegger yeah my father was a
short scrappy guy but you know a system
would you do this table is not for the
Jews it's for the Germans
this is ya step outside my mom's like
body condemn it this guy would have
killed him didn't make a difference my
father would do it with it when the
councillor
you shall I used to be in Arab Jerusalem
it was during the Intifada and one of my
kids was born and we had them go get a
birth certificate and I said dad listen
you know I think we should take a cab
you know that's all right let's go park
there so I'm driving around there's no
parking space right over there there are
these 20 Arabs just like hanging around
in the mob that's okay let them say some
this is come on mother oh my god it
would have died if I didn't care
my father came things were the first
time in 1960 and a half a year after the
six-day war and they would drive me to
the Gaza Strip and everybody's staring
at them this looks of hatred and my
father says stop the bus he says I'm
gonna buy some nuts want to do the sugar
nobody arms a little bitter because I
actually think they get back on the bus
that was my dad my my dad was fearless
yeah that's right it's wrong and that's
why you know I say the difference
between his philosophy what he did I was
there I remember was wouldn't you Kippur
and he says to the rabbi him to consider
synagogue because I really should come
on Shabbos I really should do more you
know and he says to look money in a big
family you give a lot of charity you
working to support your families that's
a bit my father started yelling at him
he says you're the rabbi you were
supposed to tell me I'm doing the wrong
thing I know I'm doing the wrong thing
don't try to tell me I'm doing the right
thing so I definitely grew up with a
sense of this right in visual yeah and
if we got this in a consequence if we
jump to there than his life he really
ended up moving right by a show right
now his kids he became shomer Shabbos
and after this heart attack and he was
supposed to die you know doctor said no
and he says it will actually have a sign
some shoppers and then there was a
snowstorm he couldn't walk to shore and
he said to my mother that's it we're
moving no three of my brothers were
living in West Hempstead so he says to
the agent I want a house this is what
what are you looking for
it's got it I gotta be able to walk to
show on the snowstorm that was it it was
his only requirement he finds his house
and he I remember when he first bought
it
you know and they bring me down to see
it I said I say I say this is a piece of
garbage
that's how he was he was definitely
Thomas you know I mean not that he was
always consistent I never always
consistent I always know what's right
that doesn't always do what's right but
at least I'm back you know people say
how can you know that what you're doing
is rubbish you have to justify it to
yourself otherwise have you live with
yourself I said I'd rather know what the
MS is and say I'm not doing it then
pretend to you know justify what I'm
doing by making up a false philosophy
which is what some of course so when
when do you become from that yeah it was
probably around November my bar mitzvah
was in January was part of November then
I started for me the hardest thing to
give up was TV so when I first started
out I used to put the and the best shows
came on Friday night back then so I used
to put the TV on the shot clock that was
that it was my mercy 1972 this was 1972
and and by the time I get my mitts I
gave that up it was a few months you
know and I started working we have many
many foreign editions with many that's
the Mickey Mouse clock
I'm at the usual regular ski studio
quality control but anyway so I started
walking there the conservative synagogue
had an orthodox menu downstairs Friday
night I used to walk there and I would
come back you know and I started taking
on things for myself to you know give it
all there so but timing each other
Mitzvah I was shot you already show
Michelle and your Mitzvah was harshest
boa
for those who missed that episode but yo
gosh a mimosa
beau el faro l.e.d.s libo it's not worth
the Rose you have a piece of sponge cake
isn't Manischewitz why anything are you
ready yeah so you spoke you spoke about
that already yeah and now you're
graduating eighth grade
thank you yeah if the timer was 19 Hank
went up to the ninth grade and then it
ended the high school starting with
tempera so remember where was your
ribbon 9th grade
she was my remember you eighth grade he
was my memory 9th grade and it was my
reverie in 10th grade oh I kept myself
back they wanted to move me up and I
wanted to stay with Mary well I stay
with him for three years
11th grade they made me move up but I
just I have to tell you that so many of
the things that I sing and do are REME
well isms but I've given it my own spin
so they don't come across but you know I
he would speak so straight and so common
sense and so logical that it was just
it's just such a breath of fresh air
so on target and he was also very
provocative mm-hmm I've been accused of
that myself
no simply for the shock now now if you
remember we had a bunch of Concerned
kids in there in our school Salomon chef
that closed down my class had a lot of
conservative kids kids kids whose
parents we could serve rabbis of Kansas
and somebody left a Silverman Center on
his desk he looks he goes ah boys what
is this now those of us who are Willis
we do already something's happening you
can see it coming like before because it
must have been instead of massive an
actor they took it to us with me he
provoked us right and then Elizabeth she
has amazing you know so they took boys
they don't believe in Kerberos him boom
on the floor me at this point I was
wearing a little button that he gave me
gonna say I am Abed
[Laughter]
what are you doing it hits god's name in
it he says listen closely it says that
if I going right to save it or you bury
it but if it not because right did you
burn it you burn it put your screw in
the foot sconce eminent looks again a
safe return of God's name in it if it's
rich better because you burn it
until everyone just gave up and he went
on teaching with now I had the day even
I was was like wow that's that's a bit
much cheaper for me and then years later
I came across a Gomorrah that says why
was the motion of a new punished for
breaking the law
because he was doing it to teach place
and so he obviously meant attachment he
knew what was gonna be been fighting in
the past you know was one time he's
sitting there suddenly he says it's a
conservative synagogue where is it a
synagogue came out because they have a
safe guitar if you take a safe and turn
into a bathroom oh my god anyway it was
a delegation of concern members and they
call a minute I didn't say to me at home
I said if you put a single right here we
all agree to write down who was he's the
prince and he was the principal of the
county once in a generation he could put
together a staff with revery well with
people from why you wish listen from
Eric's trail with lavaca you know and
[Music]
welcome to BBC you're listening to Big
Bang luckily we have a special American
producer who's my Israeli producer we
just like take everything out we'll see
what he leaves in the end but anyway but
he was could take together this this
entire disparate staff and make it all
into you type into something special
but he certainly once he says do you
know how hard it was for me to keep
every well that it was so much pressure
from your fire and I meet people to this
day who would they say well they start
foaming at the mouth to here I meet
people today who affirm you tonight
because a very well and so that was his
approach his approach was I'm gonna
shake you up I'll shake you if I'm gonna
get you I'll get you if I don't get I
don't get you but you're not going to
sit passively in my class and ignore me
and I decided that up to you know I I
don't like to go in and give a nice
comfortable shooter where everybody
comes over afterwards and says thank you
very much if I haven't done something to
touch people's lives that to me is I
haven't worked hard enough I worked hard
enough there was a share of oldest
singles the ones who would tell me their
ages and they asked me to give a
for critics I get one cheer on your
second cheer and at the end there was it
thank you very much so I'm not doing it
so I come to the third cheer I started
to go you know what what's wrong with
you girls how come you're not married
well they just explode they give me that
and I just kept pushing it one may be
too picky maybe you're this villian and
whatever I could do and because I wanted
the catharsis
I wanted I wanted people that took right
though I'm not here to make you feel
learn at the antenna
you know if there's something father you
say it out can't get it out express it
you know don't you know don't ignore him
don't ignore me or the issue let's
address it whatever might be one set all
right well you continue through a school
not nothing major
details we have right now unless you
want to share okay biology I was going
in to the Regents with about a twenty
three average now head of a hundred all
right not because I was stupid but
because I just you know didn't do my
homework is that if you know something
now but when we studied nutrition I did
the cooking in the house because my
parents both worked in the cooking so my
biology teacher was so impressed by this
that she she had a warm spot my mom she
was very tough and I remember she would
when she if she throw you out you know
that was that you went out for certainly
for the day and you couldn't make any
comments I used to get away maybe some
comments anyway once I might I went
across the lectures mr. Lasky leave the
room said what mr. Lasky leave the room
we should've thought of that before and
leave the room pick up my things and I
walk outside come back in that it was a
never happened before anyway I'm going
in and I got 23 you know so she says
I'll make you a deal
whenever you get on the Regents I'll
make you bet mark for the year well I
studied like crazy did all those regions
test in the back of the books and I
study my studying to this day I still
know what the Malthusian to you
not many people do yeah and I took the
read took out of 90 so I graduated with
a 90-mile with mr. stern squad was in
him I got thrown out of the class and I
bothered something through another door
and different times different countries
different stories I 290 in that class
alright moving right along so you
graduate 1975 career and what was the
process then the people go to Israel the
people then go straight to college it
wasn't so common to go back there were
not many
yeshivas that were geared towards
American students
it was BMT there was a comb go girl
there was 1975 there was bya
BJJ Americans would go to the mere
tyrant but there was no American program
in that you had to learn you know this
beginner when you go there there were
several Parnevik
but there was there were really no
issues the the only one that was really
around at the time was time and he
decided it was time and it's interesting
because you know who later on I was fine
his brother is higher you was the
principal of the high school and the
receiver took him away from their job
and Rabbi Fidel Mayer from that was very
upset about it Tiny's on him for years
and
he never said a word to me now the
reason that's ever gonna come it's fine
because I went to stay coming
but God is me was the head of state
women and you spoke about that oh so on
yeah in the podcast for those in fact my
my I just had my grandson's burst and I
went to get the which is very good as
his daughter so there was so interesting
but like the regard was the touring
director and Steve Hammond I show up and
stay feminine I have I met I'm a kid in
mine Orthodox high school yeah
everybody's wearing hat everybody's like
you know you sheemish my my my my
counselor my counselor was was SATA
mahasin wait I had no frame of reference
for this anyway but but my learning
Rebbe was some kind of time and a lot of
director with some common design and I
was a young impressionable well you know
and they basically taught me that if you
don't go to a time then you'll never
fulfill the purpose of life so I I went
to apply for fire says they didn't even
know what I was doing there you know I
mean I couldn't read Hebrew I couldn't
never make eye I got nothing you know I
was a kid you know we did it now and
again tomorrow day yeah so now so they
can meet with the Guardians Joe and I
remember what I was talking about going
so if Snell suddenly told me his whole
history so I said to him well then I
won't go I won't go
to me it's the best place for you you go
don't worry about my issues that was
that is my honey just max mom I went
there come a time I was a fish out of
water
yeah you have to I'm spending 10 hours
in the basement so I then we're gonna
put me the machine is but I
couldn't stay because I was too smart
yeah I didn't know that I had dyslexia
and I know there's other different you
know things so I that's why I couldn't
read us focus improv all kinds of you
know they didn't know about it
but I had picked up techniques to
compensate so I was only in the
machinist ship for a month and they said
we can't keep you here because he's told
me he's happened every week you be a
discussion and I know he's my father
because he can't read it so they moves
me up and the other revi remind me that
you have no place here you know you came
here through mental mental gymnastics
you don't know how to read under the
skills that but nobody I didn't have to
to her I just you know I had to bluff my
way through it and that's how I got
through base matters and luckily it was
over here and around - Bhishma I have
typed way and I mean so bad that if I
concentrated with all my effort I could
move my head from one side of fact I was
in a room they moved me down to a
separate room and there were mosquitoes
there and the most kids would land on me
and I couldn't shake them up I would
just watch them eat me I was so I was so
sick you're 17 now this seventeen Wow
yeah I was just 17 if you know what I
mean and I got the pigeons
nobody says if you have a protagonist
you take pigeons in there and put them
on your belly button and they suck the
hepatitis well they could only get eight
the butter an Arab shook they they can
only get eight because it wasn't the
mating season and the first one died in
30 seconds he said I couldn't kill a
flock so I only did a I only did a blood
test once a week but my SGO teas and Sgt
peas were about 2,000 this must be 15
and the next blood test it went down to
200 the doctor said it was a remarkable
recovery
but yes in fact I always terribly
dehydrated as a control
so they had turned nude people come here
for 15 minutes I had to drink like I
said no matter they would stand over me
Frank did it ever occur to you then do
you ever think should I go back home to
your parents to be at home I wasn't
gonna I couldn't get I couldn't move but
I so then another guy Ricky said poets
who was hysterically funny I've also
been known to be funny so he got into
Titus - the two of us are locked in this
room for a month we wrote the most epic
poem play in the history of our time a
boy still talking about it to this day
yeah 1976 and that's important
connection it was it was so you were in
charge single-handedly of the care of
all the Jews in Long Island
well there were 600,000 Jews alone I
don't think I got all of them and
frankly I don't think that I ever was my
Kyrie Irving I might make anybody from
because if I'm gonna take credit for the
people to come from then I have to take
responsibility for the people who did
and that's too heavy a thing delaying on
anybody I am an educator and I because
borough who wants me to be the shreya to
help somebody find their way back then
that's a gift then I was allowed to be
able to participate but Curtis borough
in the end is the one who you know just
sends out and lets people have an
opportunity with Moshe Shapiro's once
said the secret to Kirov is not to get
an echo burrow whose weight he wants to
bring back those people who are ready to
come back for the end and you know
you'll have to not interfere with the
process you have to help the process so
I'm just gonna take it to one last date
